EMI0001.0008
Als Beispiele können hier angeführt werden: Alkylradikale mit geraden und verzweigten Ketten, wie Methyl, Äthyl, Isobutyl, n-Amyl, 4-Methyl-pen- tyl-(1), n-Heptyl, 3,4-Dimethyl-pentyl-(1), 4,8-Dime- thyl-nonyl-(1) und ähnliche;
Alkenylradikale (mit einer oder mehreren Doppelbindungen), wie Penten- (3)-yl-(1), 4-Methyl-penten-(3)-yl-(1), 4-Methyl- l:exen-(3)-yl-(1), 3,4-Dimethyl-penten-(3)-yl-(1), 4,6- Dimethyl-hepten-(3)-yl-(1), 4,8-Dimethyl-nonadien- (3,7)-yl-(1) und ähnliche;

Process for the preparation of unsaturated ketones The. The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of unsaturated ketones of the formula
EMI0001.0008
in which R1 is a phenyl, an acyclic or cyclic alkyl or alkenyl radical,
R2 denotes an alkyl group or, together with R1, denotes the pentamethylene radical and R3 denotes hydrogen or an alkyl group, which is characterized in that an ester of the formula
EMI0001.0024
where R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as above, heated in the presence of a lower aluminum trialkoxide with elimination of carbon dioxide.
One embodiment of the invention consists in that the lower aluminum trialcoholate is added to the starting ester and the mixture is heated, with vigorous stirring, to a temperature at which there is constant evolution of carbon dioxide. Although it is usually neither necessary nor desired, a solvent for the ester can be used to moderate the course of the reaction, because the reaction is exothermic. The chosen solvent must of course behave inertly under the conditions prevailing during the decarboxylation.
Suitable solvents are, for example, decahydronaphthalene, diphenyl ether and the ketones obtained according to the process. The end of the decarboxylation is indicated by the decrease in the evolution of carbon dioxide. The reaction mixture can be worked up by methods known per se, the most suitable procedure depending on the boiling points of the ketone produced and the impurities in the crude reaction mixture.
As a rule, by-products are: the alcohol corresponding to the ester used as the starting material, dehydroacetic acid and acetone. Fractional distillation is often sufficient to separate the ketone from the impurities and from the catalyst. If the ketone and a by-product have boiling points close to each other, the impurity can be removed by washing with weakly basic or weakly acidic reagents.
The catalytically active lower aluminum trialcoholate is advantageously added in a ratio of over 2 millimoles per mole of the ester used as the starting material. A ratio between approximately 8 to 25 millimoles per mole of the ester has proven to be even more favorable.
Examples of decarboxylation catalysts are aluminum tri-ethylate, -trimethylate, -tri-n-pentylate, -tri-n-heptylate. Preferred alcoholates are those in which the alkyl groups contain 2 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. B. aluminum triethylate, tri-isopropylate, tri-tert-butylate and the like.
Aluminum tri-isopropylate is particularly suitable.
As stated above, the symbol R1 in formulas (I) and (II) can represent phenyl or a cyclic or acyclic alkyl or alkenyl radical.
Examples include: alkyl radicals with straight and branched chains, such as methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, n-amyl, 4-methyl-pentyl- (1), n-heptyl, 3,4-dimethyl-pentyl- ( 1), 4,8-dimethyl-nonyl- (1) and the like;
Alkenyl radicals (with one or more double bonds), such as penten- (3) -yl- (1), 4-methyl-penten- (3) -yl- (1), 4-methyl- l: exen- (3) - yl- (1), 3,4-dimethyl-penten- (3) -yl- (1), 4,6-dimethyl-hepten- (3) -yl- (1), 4,8-dimethyl-nonadiene- (3,7) -yl- (1) and the like;
cyclic and acyclic alkyl and alkenyl radicals, such as cyclohexyl, cyclohexen- (1) -yl, cyclohexylmethyl, cyclohexylidene-methyl, 2- [cyclohexen (1) -yl] -ethyl, 3-cyclohexylidene-propyl and the like ; and the radical phenyl. Examples of radicals that R2 can mean are the following:
Methyl, ethyl, isobutyl and the like; R3 in turn can denote: hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, n-heptyl and the like. Ri and R = together can also form the pentamethylene radical. A preferred group of starting compounds comprises the acetoacetates of dialkyl vinyl carbinols, e.g.
B. of diethyl vinyl carbinol; Methyl-isobutyl-vinyl-carbinol, methyl- [4,8-dimethyl-nonyl- (1)] -vinyl-carbinol, dimethyl-vinyl-carbinol, methyl-ethyl-vinyl-carbinol; of alkyl-alkenyl-vinyl-carbinols, z.
B. methyl- [4-methyl-penten- (3) -yl- (1)] -vinyl-carbinol, methyl- [4,6-dimethyl-hepten- (3) -yl- (1)] - vinyl carbinol and the like; or of methyl-phenyl-vinyl-carbinol and 1-vinyl-cyclohexanol. The products of the process represent valuable fragrances or intermediate products for the synthesis of fragrances and drugs.
