-6-p- (anisidino)-s-triazin.
2-Chlor-4,6-bis(9-phenanthrylamino)-s-triazin, 2,4-Dichlor-6-(3-dodecylanilino)-s-triazin, 2-Chlor-4,6-bis(p-vinylanilino)-s-triazin, 2,4-Dichlor-6-(p-allylanilino)-s-triazin, 2-Chlor-4-anilino-6-(4-chloranilino)-s-triazin, 2-Chlor-4-(o-anisidino)-6-(3-merkaptoanilino)- s-triazin und 2-Chlor-4-(4-methylmerkaptoanilino)-s-triazin. Des weiteren gestattet die Löslichkeit der s-Triazine in organischen Lösungsmitteln, dass sie mit Vorteil als Lösungen in dieser Art von Lösungs mitteln verwendet werden;
B. Athanol, Isopropanol und Amylalkohole. An dere verwendbare Lösungsmittel sind die Carbitole,> (eingetragene Marke) und Cellosolven (eingetra gene Marke);

Boyce Thompson Inst., 13, 171 (1943) be schrieben.

Fungicidal Agent The present invention relates to a novel fungicidal agent.
The compounds, which form a large group and are known as 1,3,5-triazines or s-triazines, have been known as chemical intermediates for some time. Before the present invention, however, it was not known that an important group of extremely effective fungicides could be obtained by introducing certain groups into the 1,3,5-triazine nucleus.
The term fungicidal is understood to mean not only the property of destroying fungi, but also the property of preventing the germination of the spores or the spore formation of the fungi; this property is sometimes referred to as fungistatic.
The present invention is a fungicidal preparation, which is characterized in that it contains 0.01 to 10,000 parts per million parts of the total mixture of a 1,3,5-triazine, which as a substituent on at least one carbon atom and a chlorine atom on at least one Carbon atom has an optionally substituted arylamine residue contains. The fungicidal triazine will preferably be mixed with a solid diluent or a liquid dispersant.
In general, the preferred fungitoxic substances include those tri- (C-substituted) -1,3,5-triazines in which at least one substituent is chlorine and at least one substituent is an arylamino group. If there are two such aryl groups, they do not have to be identical. Negative or other radicals can be attached to the aryl group on the nitrogen atom outside the nucleus.
In addition, the aryl groups are not limited to the phenyl group since polynuclear aromatic groups work just as well and are preferred for some uses.
The simpler ones from the group of substances that have been found to be unusually effective include 2-chloro-4,6-dianiiino-s-triazine and 2,4-dichloro-6-anilino-s-triazine. Typical examples of the aryl groups in question include the phenyl, diphenyl, a-naphthyl, s-naphthyl,
the phenanthryl and the anthracyl group. In the latter examples, the polynuclear aryl group can be attached to the exocyclic nitrogen atom in any of several positions. Hydrocarbon-substituted derivatives of the above typical aryl groups can also be used. For example, the aryl group can be replaced by an unbranched aliphatic radical, such as
B. the methyl, the ethyl, the propyl, the hexyl or the dodecyl group, or its isomers or branched equivalents, such as. B. the isopropyl, the isobutyl, the secondary butyl radical, and the various branched radicals such as the amyl, the hexyl and the nonyl radical as well as higher aliphatic radicals, etc. substituted the.
Furthermore, these aryl groups can be replaced by endoaliphatic groups, such as. B. the methylene, the ethylene, the propylene and the butylene groups can be substituted to create the corresponding phenyl endomethylene, phenylene endoethylene, hydrindane and tetralin radicals. The aryl group can likewise be further substituted by the same or a different aryl group.
Other examples of such compounds are those triazines in which the aryl groups on the exocyclic nitrogen atom are acenaphthene and fluorene groups.
Specific examples of the fungicidally active 1,3,5-triazines include 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-phenylanilino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-phenylanilino) -s- triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (o-phenylanilino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (o-phenylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (a -naphthylamino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (a-naphthylamino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (ss-naphthylamino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro -6- (ss-naphthylamino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4-anilino-6- (a-naphthylamino) -s-triazine,

- s-triazine and 2,4-dichloro-6- (3-acenaphthylamino) -s-triazine. In addition to such substituents, the aryl groups can contain corresponding unsaturated radicals, such as. B. the vinyl, the propenyl, the allyl group, etc. contain. Such typical fungicidally active triazines are z. B.
2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-vinylanilino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (o-propenyl-anilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4- (o-vinylanilino) -6-aniline-s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-allylanilino) -s-triazine and 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-methallylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro- 4,6-bis (2-vinyl-a-naphthylamino) - s-triazine and 2,4-dichloro-6- (5-propenyl-ss-naphthylamino) - s-triazine.
The 1,3,5-triazines can also contain aryl groups which are substituted by various negative radicals. With such 1,3,5-triazines it is possible to obtain fungicidal agents which are particularly suitable for certain purposes.
Examples of such negative groups that may be present as substituents in the aryl radicals include the nitroso, nitro, amino, substituted amino, chlorine, bromine or iodine groups, as well as the hydroxyl, the substituted hydroxyl, azo, cyano, thiocyan, acyloxy, aroyloxy,
Mercaptyl and substituted mercaptyl groups. Furthermore, various combinations of the hydrocarbon and negative radicals listed above can be used.

If you want to protect any material against fungal attack, it is generally not sufficient to take a means that can destroy the fungi or prevent their germination or the production of fungal spores. Other properties, such as B. low toxicity to mammals, long-lasting weather resistance, the property not to produce stains or cause discoloration, low toxicity to plants, low or controlled volatility must be taken into consideration before a pesticide can be used commercially.
For these and other reasons it is necessary in many cases to include other essential groups in the pesticides according to the invention than those essential groups which have been found to have pest control properties. While it is essential that at least one of the exocyclic nitrogen atoms of the pesticides according to the invention contains an aryl substituent, the second substituent of this nitrogen atom, if one is present, can vary within wide limits.
For example, it has been found that compounds such as 2,4-dichloro-6- (N-methylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (N-methylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro -4,6-bis (N-methyl-2,5-dichloroanilino) - s-triazine, 2-chloro-4- (N-methylanilino) -6- (a-naphthyl- amino) -s-triazine, 2- Chloro-4- (2,5-dichloroanilino) -6- (N-methyl-p-anisidino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (diphenylamino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4 , 6-bis (N-methyl-N- [4-phenylaminophenyl])
-s-triazine and 2-chloro-4- (N [p-tolyl] -N- [p-methoxyphenyl] -6- (4-nitroaniline) -s-triazine are very powerful pesticides when used according to the invention.
In addition to the substituted or unsubstituted aryl amino group, the 1,3,5-triazines which are effective as pest control agents according to the present invention must contain at least one chlorine atom on a carbon atom of the triazine nucleus. Whether one or two chlorine atoms and one or two aryl amino groups are provided depends largely on the type of application and the particular fungal organism that is destroying or generating. Spores should be prevented.
It has been found that all of the different embodiments of the triazines according to the invention, which are effective as pest control agents, have little or no selectivity in their effectiveness against fungi. Although there is a measurable difference in the ratio in which the pesticides according to the invention attack different fungal organisms, this can easily be determined by experiment. This difference is of a degree of degree, and provided that the minimum amount of pesticide is used, a protective effect is achieved against a very large number of fungal organisms by any of the agents according to the invention.
In order to derive practical benefit from the activity as pest control agents inherent in the above-mentioned 1,3,5-triazines, the preparations according to the invention advantageously contain liquid dispersants or solid diluents. In the pure state, the above compounds are far too potent or too potent to have any practical utility as pesticides. To z.
B. an upper surface, such as a painted surface or a wood surface, or the surface of a fruit, a trunk or leaf, or a concrete surface or other surface, to protect in the most effective way, the inventive substances must be distributed thoroughly these surfaces are brought into intimate contact with them. When treating more or less porous material, it is also important that the substances according to the invention are distributed between the fine structure of these materials and brought into intimate contact with them.
In order to benefit from the discovery that the specified substances are effective pesticides, it is therefore advisable to incorporate a significantly larger amount of solid diluents or liquid dispersants into them. Furthermore, such dispersants or diluents have the effect that only very small amounts of the abovementioned compounds are required to achieve a protective effect. Another advantage of stretching these compounds is that it allows fields to be treated by easily applicable methods while still virtually completely covering the treated material.
One method of using the pesticides, according to the invention, is to use an aqueous suspension. In order to obtain an aqueous suspension that controls pests, it is expedient to add an amount of a surface-active agent which is sufficient to disperse and suspend the pest control agent. Examples of such surfactants that can be used in the preparation of dispersions include salts of the alkyl and alkylarylsulfonates, such as.
B. duPont MP-189 and Nacconol-NR, alkyl sulfates, such as. B. Dreft (registered trademark), Alkylamidsulfonate, such. B. Igepon-T (registered trademark), the alkylaryl polyether alcohols such. B. Triton X-100 (registered trademark), the fatty acid esters of polyhydric alcohols such. B. Span (einetra gene brand), the ethylene oxide addition products of such esters, such.
B. Tween (registered trademark) and the addition products of long-chain mercaptans and ethylene oxide, such as. B. Non-Ionic-218 from Sharples. Still other surface-active agents can be used; the above list contains only examples of the more common means.
In the examples below, all parts are by weight. <I> Example 1 </I> To produce a use form of 2-chloro-4,6-bis (2,5-dichloroanilino) -s-triazine, 10 parts of this compound were finely ground and the resulting powder to 1000 parts with vigorous stirring Parts of water containing one part of Tween-80 were added. This concentrated dispersion was diluted a thousand fold by the addition of water to obtain a use form of the concentration suitable for the application. The resulting dispersion thus contained 10 parts of the pesticide according to the invention per 1 million parts of the water dispersion.
In the same way, aqueous dispersions with a concentration of 0.1; 1.0; 10 and 100 parts of the following pesticides according to the invention per million parts of diluent prepared: 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-nitroanilino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-chloroanilino) -s -triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-anisidino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (a-naphthylamino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (2 , 5-dichloroanilino) -s-triazine and 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-anisidino) -s-triazine.
Similar aqueous dispersions of the following pest control agents according to the invention are also produced with equally good results:.
2-chloro-4,6-bis (9-phenanthrylamino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (3-dodecylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-vinylanilino ) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-allylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4-anilino-6- (4-chloroanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4- (o-anisidino) -6- (3-mercaptoanilino) -s-triazine and 2-chloro-4- (4-methylmercaptoanilino) -s-triazine. Furthermore, the solubility of the s-triazines in organic solvents allows them to be used with advantage as solutions in this type of solvent;
this application is preferred for certain purposes. For example, the pesticides according to the invention are used in the treatment of leather, dissolved in a volatile solvent. After use, the volatile solvent evaporates, leaving the pesticide as an impregnation over the entire surface of the article and in the dispersed form found to be the most beneficial. Likewise, when applying the pesticides, according to the invention, on smooth surfaces, such as.
B. in the surface treatment of wood to protect against fungal attack or to prevent fungal growth on wet concrete surfaces, the use of a solution can be the most practical method for applying a protective film by brushing, spraying or dipping. The choice of a suitable solvent is largely determined by the concentration of the active ingredient to be used, the volatility required of the solvent, its spray or flow properties and the type of material to be treated. The many organic solvents that can be used as carriers for the pesticides, according to the Invention, include hydrocarbons, such as. B.
Benzene, xylene, or toluene; Ketones such as B. acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and cyclohexanone; chlorinated solvents, such as. B. carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene and perchlorethylene; Esters such as B. ethyl, butyl and amyl acetate, and alcohols, such as.
B. ethanol, isopropanol and amyl alcohols. Other solvents that can be used are the Carbitols,> (registered trademark) and Cellosolven (registered trademark);
the former generally include the monoalkyl ethers of diethylene glycol and the latter the monoalkyl ethers of ethylene glycol. In addition, combinations of these various typical solvents can be used, as a result of which the use forms according to the invention can be given special volatility and viscosity properties.
<I> Example 2 </I> A solution of 5 parts of 2,4-dichloro-6- (4-chloro-anilino) -s-triazine in 250 parts of cyclohexanone was made by stirring the two constituents for 15 minutes at a temperature of about 25 C. This concentrated solution, which is suitable for storage and transport, was further diluted with 99,750 parts of kerosene in order to produce a final dilution of 50 parts / million suitable for the application.
Similarly concentrated solutions of 2-chloro-4,6-dianilino-s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6-anilino-s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (a-naphthylamino) -s-triazine , 2-chloro-4, 6-bis (p-vinylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (2,5-dichloroanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4- ( o-anisidino) -6- (3-mercaptylanilino) - s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (N-methylanilino) -s-triazine and 2-chloro-4- (N-methylanilino) -6- ( / 3-naphthyl-amino) -s-triazine are in each of the following solvents:
Ethyl acetate, kerosene, perchlorethylene and Cello solve produced. Ready-to-use solutions are produced with equally good results by adding further quantities of kerosene.
In addition to the above-described liquid mixtures containing the 1,3,5-triazines, mixtures can be prepared in which the pesticides according to the invention are stretched by talc, clay or other solid diluents. Such usage forms are particularly useful in treating seeds where the use of an aqueous usage form can cause premature germination or where the use of a solvent usage form can damage the seeds.
For the application of the pesticides according to the invention to crops, a use form in dust form is preferred in certain cases, where the use of a wet use form could cause certain undesirable side effects. Further special examples of such typical inert solid carriers which can be used as diluents in the use forms according to the invention in dust form are Walker's earth, pyrophillite, attaclay and the Filtrole.
<I> Example 3 </I> An embodiment of the preparation according to the invention in dust form was produced as follows: One part of 2-chloro-4,6-bis (4-nitroanilino) -s-triazine was mixed with 100 parts of fuller's earth into a Beater mill given. The mixture was milled for 1 hour and sieved to obtain a material which passed through a 41 mesh per cm screen. This usage form of 1 percent by weight can be used immediately or further diluted. A further dilution was made by repeating the above procedure with further 9900 parts of fuller's earth.
Similar dust forms are made from the following compounds: 2,4-dichloro-6-aniline-s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (a-naphthylamino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (3-dodecylanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-vinylanilino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (4-chloroanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro -4- (4-methylmercaptoanilino) -6- (p-anisidino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (N-methyl-2,5-dichloroanilino) - s-triazine and 2-chloro 4,6-bis (diphenylamino) -s-triazine, namely,
by treating them with Filtrol in a cross beater mill as above with equally good results.
For certain uses, it is preferred to use the pesticides according to the invention in the form of oil-in-water emulsions. For example, a concentrate of the pesticide in a water-insoluble solvent is produced; this solution is then dispersed or emulsified in a surfactant-containing water. The typical case of such solvents include hydrocarbons such. B. kerosene, benzene or naphtha, higher alcohols such. B. butanol, oleyl alcohol or ethers and esters of these, and chlorinated solvents, such as.
B. perchlorethylene and trichlorethylene.
<I> Example 4 </I> An oil-in-water emulsion was prepared by dissolving 10 parts of 2,4-dichloro-6- (a-naphthyl-amino) -s-triazine in 1000 parts of kerosene. This solution was dispersed in 99,000 parts of water containing one part of Triton X-100 with vigorous stirring to give a dispersion of 10 parts / million of the active agent.
If similar solutions of 2,4-dichloro-6-anilino-s-triazine, 2-chloro-4-anilino-6- (4-hydrindenylamino) - s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (o-propenylanilino ) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (2-vinyl-a-naphthylamino) - s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-cyanoanilino) -s-triazine and 2, 4-dichloro-6- (p-benzoyloxyanilino) -s-triazine in kerosene, naphtha and trichlorethylene if prepared after the following dispersion in water, satisfactory emulsions are obtained in the same way.
It was also found that it is possible to combine the above processes for producing the preparations according to the invention. For example, a surface-active agent can be incorporated into the dust-use forms according to the invention in order to give a wettable powder which can then be suspended in an aqueous or some other liquid medium. The alkyl or alkylaryl sulfonates used as cleaning agents are particularly useful for such forms of use.
<I> Example 5 </I> A mixture of 100 parts of 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-anisidino) -s-triazine, 1000 parts of Attaclay and 0.1 part of Nacconol were ground in a cross beater mill and the resulting powder passed through a sieve with 41 meshes per cm. This 10%, wettable powder resulted in a perfect aqueous suspension,
when 11 parts of this powder was stirred in 10,000 parts of water to make a suspension of 100 parts / million active ingredient. Similar wettable powders with Filtrol, Wal kererde and pyrophyllite are made by grinding, as above, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (N-methyl-2,5-dichloroanilino) - s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6 - (a- [4-chloronaphthylamino]) - s-triazine, 2-chloro-4-anilino-6- (4-chloroanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (p-cyanoanilino) - s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (5-propenyl-ss-naphthylamino) - s-triazine,
2,4-dichloro-6- (a-naphthylamino) -s-triazine and 2-chloro-4- (2,4-dimethylanilino) -6-anilino-s-triazine and Tween-80; after grinding they are sieved.
Likewise, a use form made with a solvent can be used together with water, or water and a surface-active agent. Such surfactants are e.g. B. of the type of Triton X-100, Non-Ionic-218 from Sharples or Tween.
<I> Example 6 </I> A solution of 1 part 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-toluidino) -s-triazine, 100 parts ethyl acetate and 0.1 part Tween was obtained by stirring the constituents at 25 ° C. for half an hour manufactured. This solution was then added with stirring to 9900 parts of water to prepare a solution suitable for use.
Equally good dispersions are obtained if 2-chloro-4,6-dianilino-s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6-anilino-s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-phenylanilino) -s -triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (o-propenylanilino) -s-triazine, 2,4-dichloro-6- (p-phenylazoanilino) -s-triazine, 2-chloro-4,6-bis (N -methylanilino) -s-triazine and 2-chloro-4,6-bis (2,5-dichloroanilino) -s-triazine are dissolved together with Triton X-100 in methanol, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone and water is added with stirring.
It has also been found that an adhesive or adhesive, such as. B. vegetable oils, naturally occurring gums or other adhesives can be incorporated into the 1,3,5-triazine preparations according to the invention. Fountain solutions can also be used in the preparations according to the invention. Furthermore, these preparations can be mixed with other pesticides or other biocidal agents, such as. B. insecticides, larvae fertilizers, bactericidal agents, worm and Ma denvertilgemittel or with other substances that are to be used together with the pesticides according to the invention, such as. B. herbicides or fertilizers can be used.
The usefulness of the compounds according to the invention as pesticides was explained by determining the concentration at which germination. is prevented by 50% each of the spores of the fungi Alternaria oleracea and Sclerotinia fructicola. The former causes potato meltau, the latter causes peach rot.
These mushrooms are representatives of the types of fungi that are responsible for severe crop damage. The ability to influence the fungi is a reliable sign of the general applicability of the pesticides according to the invention for the protection of these and other important agricultural products. These experiments were carried out as follows: An aqueous suspension of the pest control agent in distilled water containing dispersant was prepared. This suspension was added in various dilutions with distilled water to a drop of water which contained the fungus to be examined and was on a microscope slide.
In this way, the concentration at which half of the fungi were prevented from germinating spores was determined. This standard method of germination on a slide has been described and accepted by the Committee on Standardization of Fungicidal Tests of the American Phytopathological Society in Phytopathology, 33, 627 (1943).

<tb> 9 <SEP> copper sulfate <SEP> (usual) <SEP> 100 <SEP> 100 A further proof of the usefulness of the compounds according to the invention as pesticides was provided by the determination of the smallest amount of active ingredients carried out according to the above method for the prevention of the germination of the spores of 951 / o of the fungal organisms present in a culture it was necessary.
This determination was made in the same manner as the above.
Typical of those results that can be achieved with the 1,3,5-s-triazines effective as pesticides according to the invention is the compound 2 = chlorine-4,6 @ bis (2,5-dichloroanilino) -s-triazine , with which a 95% germination prevention was achieved at a concentration of 10 parts / million, while copper sulfate was only effective at a concentration of 20 parts / million.
Of particular importance in the treatment of agricultural crops against fungal diseases is the sensitivity of the plant to damage by the pesticide used. The compounds according to the invention were particularly advantageous in this regard, since in a wide variety of experiments no signs were found that they have a toxic effect on plants or that they hinder the normal life of the plant or the germination of seeds when they are in the mixtures described above can be used.
The harmlessness of the forms of use of the pesticides according to the invention was demonstrated by immersing the whole leaf of a corn, soybean, tomato, cucumber and cotton plant in suspensions of the pesticides according to the invention at concentrations of up to 10,000 parts / million, and it no harmful effects were observed on the thus treated plants or on the dipped leaves. Furthermore, each of these plants was completely sprayed with dispersions of the pesticides according to the invention in water at a concentration of 10,000 parts / million without the occurrence of harmful effects.
Even when the pesticides according to the invention were used in the form of a lanolin paste on the stems of young plants of the above species, no harmful effects were found.
The protective effect of the pesticides according to the invention against fungal attack in growing plants was demonstrated by controlling the early tomato meltau. In this experiment, the test plants are sprayed with a 0.2 ohigen concentration of the pest control agent, inoculated with spores of Alternaria solani, and the number of diseases developed is determined. Bonny-Best tomato plants grown in pots from 7.6 cm in diameter to 10-18 cm in size were used as host plants.
Three plants with still developing leaves were used for each compound. The 0.2% suspension of the compounds intended for spraying was converted in all cases to a 0.01% Tween-20 solution. The tomato plants were treated with the suspension of the pesticide on a turntable using a De Vilbiss paint spray gun. Each batch of plants that was handled on the turntable was 85 cm? sprayed the spray suspension. Under these circumstances, there was no significant loss of pesticides by dripping off the plants.
Under the standard conditions used, a deposit of approx. 0.0015 g of pest control agent per 100 cm2 of total leaf area (i.e. upper and lower leaf area) is achieved. After the pesticide deposit had dried, the plants were inoculated with a suspension of spores of the test fungus Alternaria solani.
The spores came from fungal cultures which had been grown on salt-potato-dextrose agar for 7-14 days at 20 ° C. 20 cm3 of a suspension with 50,000 spores per cubic centimeter was used to inoculate each turntable load of plants. The spores were sprayed onto the plants at an air pressure of 0.7 kg / cm2 using a De Vilbiss sprayer from a distance of about 30 cm. The upper and lower leaf areas were uniformly inoculated by this method.
After the inoculation, the plants were placed in an infection chamber which was kept at a temperature of 20 ° C. and a relative humidity of 100%. After being in this chamber for 40-48 hours, the plants were moved to a greenhouse. Damage usually developed 3-4 days after vaccination. The total number of early meltau damage on three pinnate leaves per plant sprayed was determined. Leaves with the same position on the plant were counted for all treatments and controls. The disease index was determined by dividing the average number of injuries per sprayed plant by the average number of injuries per control plant.
For this purpose a number of young tomato plants were infected with Alternaria solani. This attempt is made by Wellman and McCallan in Contrib. Boyce Thompson Inst., 13, 171 (1943).
