Filter press type electrolysers In filter press type electrolysers, channels are usually used to divert the gases and to return the electrolyte entrained by the gases, which pass through the cell stack and are connected to the respective spaces of the individual cells by a cross hole.
The connections of the connecting pipes between the cell pack and the gas separation vessels were usually placed in the middle of the electrolyzer in order to keep the flow paths as short as possible between the cell pack and the. Gas separators to emerge. You can then choose the cross-section of the mentioned longitudinal channels to be relatively small.
For the connection of the connecting pipes, a so-called middle chamber was built into the cell stack; it provided a typical component for h.Iektx-ol5-seure of the filter press design bislier. represent.
In operation, the middle chamber mentioned was under half the operating voltage; for in order to achieve the highest possible connection voltage, one pole of the current source was usually placed on the left end plate and the other pole on the right end plate of the electrolyzer. The connected pipes and the gas separation vessels were therefore also under this half voltage.
The production of such a Mittelkam mer in the required precise Ausfüh tion is very expensive; In addition, the chamber is susceptible to electrolytic corrosion, and any necessary repairs can only be carried out after removing the chamber.
The invention relates to an electrolyzer of the filter press type and enables. it is not necessary to install such a center chamber without having to enlarge the cross-section of the gas and electrolyte channels. Furthermore, the circuit can be selected in such a way that the gas separation vessels and all pipelines connected to them as well as both end plates of the electrolyser are on the ground and can therefore be touched without danger. The invention is particularly suitable for pressure electrolysers.
According to the invention, the gas discharge and electrolyte return ducts running longitudinally through the cell pack are connected to the gas separation vessels at both ends of the cell pack by means of pipes and the two end electrodes of the cell pack are connected to the same pole of the voltage source, while the other pole is connected to the Is connected in the middle of the cell pack. In this case, the pole of the voltage source connected to the two ends of the cell pack mentioned is preferably earthed.
In the practical application of the invention, it is now evident that the current is not always evenly distributed over both halves of the cell packet, but rather - can be very different - depending on the total resistance of the individual cell blocks. However, a uniform current distribution can be achieved by distributing the electrolyte return unevenly over the two halves of the cell stack. Because in general the electrolyte is cooled before it is returned to the cells and with the help of the cooled electrolyte one can regulate the resistance of the two halves of the cell pack and distribute the current evenly.
The drawing shows schematically an exemplary embodiment of the invention. The cell package made up of cells 1a, lb, 1c is divided into two halves I and II by a simple center electrode 6 and between the end plates 2 and II by the tie rods 4 and their screws 5 3 clamped. Above the cell pack I, II are the gas separation vessels, of which only the front vessel 8 can be seen, which z. B. is used to absorb the hydrogen. The gas separated from the entrained electrolyte collects in the dome 9 and flows off via the line 10.
The gas separator 8 is verbun via the tubes 11 and 12 with both ends of the associated gas discharge channel running longitudinally through the cell stack; Likewise, the vessel 8 is connected by the pipe 13 via a filter 15 and the pipe 14 to the two ends of the electrolyte return channel which is passed through the cell packet. The pipe connections of the second gas separating vessel for oxygen, which is located behind the vessel 8, are designed in the same way.
Instead of sending the returning electrolyte through a filter together as shown in the drawing, you can of course also provide a filter on each side of the cell pack.
The drums 8 contain cooling coils 18 with the inlet and outlet lines 19, 19a. As you can see from the drawn power connections, the end plates 2, 3 upstream of the end electrodes 7, 7a are at the same pole of the voltage source. The other pole of the voltage source is with. the central electrode 6 connected. The negative pole connected to the ends of the cell pack is preferably grounded.
To regulate the current distribution, two adjustable throttles (orifices) 20 and 21 are built into the electrolyte return line, which allow the electrolyte return to the two halves of the cell pack to be regulated separately and thus the resistance of the two cell groups I and 11 to be coordinated appropriately.
In the circuit shown, the tubes 11-13 and the gas separation vessel 8 represent a secondary fault with the power line rail which connects the two end electrodes 7, 7n to one another.
In order to prevent heating of these shunted pipes 1.1-1.3 by stray currents, it is recommended to connect the end electrodes 7, 7a to the gas separating vessels 8 via busbars 16, 17, the resistance of which is considerably lower. than the resistance of pipes 11-13, e.g. B. by Kupferschnenen.
The arrangement described is particularly suitable for pressure electrolyzers of the type described, since the cells are built very narrowly in pressure apparatuses and you can therefore accommodate a sufficiently large number of cells in each of the two halves (I, II) of the cell pack in order to zti sufficiently high operating voltages to come. In practice, 250 cells each could be accommodated in these two halves of a pressure electrolyzer, so that an operating voltage of around 450 volts resulted.
