Injection molding machine
The object of the present invention is an injection molding machine, the object of which is to enable articles made of thermoplastic materials to be molded under substantially higher pressures than those of normal pre-plasticizing molding machines.
Already known from patent No. 316868 an injection molding machine with preplasticization which is hydraulically controlled and which comprises a preplasticization injection chamber, means for heating said chamber, means for supplying powdered thermoplastic materials. or granulated in said chamber, a twin screw conveyor whose two screws are mutually engaged and can be rotated and slide axially in said chamber, a motor assembly slidably mounted in a frame and comprising a suitable gear controlling said rotating screws in the same direction, to bring the thermoplastic material to an injection nozzle at the outer end of said chamber,
and a hydraulic piston connected to said motor and adapted to control said twin screw conveyor axially in said chamber to inject thermoplastic material through said injection nozzle into a mold, the twin screw conveyor, motor and hydraulic piston being interconnected and the assembly being able to slide.
With the machine which is the subject of this patent, in which the thermoplastic material is injected directly from the preplasticizing injection chamber into the mold, a maximum pressure of approximately 700 kg / cm2 can be applied. Such pressure is suitable for operating on what are called, in the profession, common materials, that is to say materials such as polyethylene, polystyrene copolymers, acetates and methacrylates. and the like. Such pressure, however, is unsuitable for molding rigid vinyl articles which require an approximate pressure of some 1400 kg / cm2 at least, and the injection molding machine object of the present invention is intended to be. obtain approximate pressures of 2100 kg / cm2 and above.
It is characterized in that it comprises a preplasticization assembly provided with a substantially horizontal injection chamber for the injection of thermoplastic materials under pressure into a substantially vertical chamber of a transfer assembly of hydraulic means for controlling a plunger for injecting the thermoplastic material from the transfer chamber into a mold subjected to a pressure greater than that under which the thermoplastic material is injected into the transfer chamber from the injection chamber, and hydraulic means to counterbalance the reaction pressure of said plunger during the injection phase of said plunger.
It can thus be seen that the thermoplastic material, instead of being injected directly from the preplasticizing injection chamber into the mold in accordance with the cited patent, is injected from said preplasticizing chamber into the transfer injection chamber from which the material is then injected into the mold.
According to a particular embodiment of the machine, a hydraulic plunger is mounted in said transfer chamber and is controlled by a hydraulic fluid supplied by a pump which drives the screw conveyor in the chamber or in the preplasticization cylinder and, in order to provide the desired speed and pressure, at least one additional pump is provided as well as means for actuating the two pumps during the phase of injection or of working of the piston or of the plunger in the transfer chamber.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of the transfer assembly and part of the pre-plasticization assembly.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the transfer assembly looking at it in the direction of the arrow which appears in FIG. 1.
With reference to these figures, 3 shows the pre-plasticization chamber, 4 the heating elements and 5 the screw conveyor of the pre-plasticization assembly, the construction and operation of which are described in detail in the aforementioned patent.
The transfer injection assembly is supported by a base 6, said transfer assembly being supported on horizontal sliding rails or tracks 6a so as to be able to slide horizontally on said base 6. Tie rods 7 are also supported by base 6 and are mounted on
the said base with the help of 8 screw tie nuts
rusted on said base, said tie rods por

a movable mold plate and a hy piston
hydraulic, an operating piston and a penny
pre-filling valve to order the plate
as mobile mold, said assembly being
known and requiring no description
complementary.
The transfer set itself
has a cylinder or transfer chamber
10 surrounded for most of its length
by heating elements 11 to conserve

plasticity before injection into the mold.
At the upper end of the chamber or

chamber or transfer cylinder, is
provided a lateral inlet orifice 12, by

the pre-plasticization set. The orifice in

pre-plasticization chamber 3 by a con
extension pick 13 which is surrounded, on
its entire length, heating elements adé
quats 13a.
This intermediate pipe of
extension 13 is connected to the nozzle o3a of the
preplasticizing chamber and with orifice
intake 12 of the chamber or cylinder
transfer 10 by ball type connections
and socket, that is to say that the pipe 13 is provided at its ends with spherical parts which coincide with corresponding spherical seats in the wall of the chamber
or the transfer cylinder 10 and the injection nozzle 3a. Thus any relative vertical displacement of the transfer assembly and the pre-plasticization assembly will not cause any
damage or any breakage of the extension pipe 13 nor will it affect its operation and prevent any transmission of the forces undergone to the pre-plastification assembly or to the transfer assembly.
A transfer plunger or piston 14 is slidably mounted with said transfer chamber or cylinder 10, and is connected by means of a suitable coupling 15 to the piston rod 16 of a piston 17 working in a main hydraulic cylinder 18. The cylinder 18 is locked on the lower end of a cage 19, the upper end of which supports the transfer chamber 10.
Two counterweight cylinders 20 and 21 are each disposed on one side of the main cylinder 18, and the pistons 20a and 21a, sliding in these cylinders 20 and 21, are connected to the piston rods 20b and 21b which are, in turn, connected rigidly to the main cylinder 18 as illustrated in FIG. 1. The main cylinder 18 and the two counterweight cylinders 20 and 21 are connected through openings 18a, 20c and 21c respectively and through suitable pipes (not shown) to the hydraulic device of the preplasticization assembly.
The main cylinder 18 functions to control the plunger or transfer piston 14 and the counterbalance cylinders to counterbalance the reaction pressure of the plunger or piston during the injection phase and to keep the transfer chamber tightly engaged against the orifice of. mold 22 as described in more detail below.
The hydraulic control device of the pre-plasticization assembly, the hydraulic cylinders 18, 20 and 21 and the pre-filling device and the electrical or other control means for controlling said members in the desired sequence do not form part of the present invention and are therefore not described in more detail here, but it should be understood that, the desired sequence being known, a suitable device can be easily imagined by any person skilled in the art. It should be noted, however, that while the pump which controls the pre-plasticization assembly is also used to control the cylinder 18 of the transfer assembly, it is necessary to provide an additional pump for this purpose in order to give the plunger or transfer piston 14 the necessary speed and pressure.
The operating cycle of the machine is as follows: At the end of an operating cycle, when the transfer plunger 14 is at the upper part of its injection stroke, the mold is opened and the two pumps are off.
The mold is then closed by the pre-filling device and during the closing of the mold, suitable switching means are controlled to move the transfer plunger 14 to its lower pre-injection position, revealing the orifice 12 of the chamber 10. A switch 24 is controlled simultaneously to start the pump, which controls the preplasticization assembly, to inject the thermoplastic material from the chamber 3 of said preplasticization assembly into the transfer chamber 10. The additional pump is then started and the two Pumps control cylinder 18 so that the pump or transfer piston injects the thermoplastic material from transfer chamber 10 into the mold, with hydraulic pressure also being applied to cylinders 20 and 21 to counterbalance the reaction pressure of plunger 14.
As soon as the injection has taken place, a single pump is used to maintain the high pressure on the plunger 14 during the determined period of cooling, while the other pump is used to control the hydraulic motor of said preplasticization assembly, s' automatically stopping when the required amount of material has been pre-laminated.
At the end of the cooling period, the transfer plunger 14 returns to its upper position and the mold opens.
The fixed mold plate 9 is provided with an off-center opening 25, in addition to the central opening 26, which is used for off-center molding, i.e. when the mold 23 is not provided with a central inlet 22, but with an off-center orifice. In order that the transfer injection chamber can pass through the opening 25 of the stationary mold plate 9 during off-center molding, the transfer assembly does not only slide horizontally on the sliding rails 6a such as described above, to bring the. transfer chamber 10 in alignment with opening 25 of the stationary mold plate, but the transfer chamber and its members are movable vertically to allow the transfer chamber to be moved away from opening 26 and disposed in the opening 25.
The transfer assembly is normally maintained in its upper operating position, that is to say in the position illustrated, by means of a latch 27.
When it is desired to move the transfer chamber from the illustrated position to an off-center molding position, the latch 27 is moved, and the chamber is moved vertically downward against the action of the counterweight cylinders 20, 21 to that the upper end of the transfer chamber is in position below the surface of the stationary mold plate 9. The mold plate 9 is then lifted to release the transfer chamber 10. The transfer assembly is then moved horizontally on the sliding rails 6a until said transfer chamber 10 and the opening 25 in the stationary mold are coaxial and the mold plate 9 is lowered, after which the transfer unit is returned to its working position under the hydraulic pressure of the counterweight cylinders 20, 21.
The pre-plasticization assembly, which is connected to the transfer assembly via the extension pipe 13, is also slidable horizontally on a box spring, as described in the cited patent and must also be moved correspondingly when the transfer assembly is moved horizontally. Alternatively the pre-plasticization assembly can be maintained in its original position, and the extension pipe 13 can be replaced by another extension pipe of shorter length.
Although the transfer assembly has been described as being used with a preplasticization assembly as described in the aforementioned patent, it is understood that it can be used with any suitable injection molding machine having adequate means for injecting. the thermoplastic material in the transfer chamber.
