Machine for binding sheets The present invention relates to a machine for binding together sheets, for example sheets of paper, letters, copies, peels, etc. by gluing by means of a liquid adhesive comprising a phase dispersant and a dispersed phase and capable of forming a flexible film.
The term binding used here means the meeting of sheets or sheets by neighboring edges, called binding edges, so as to form a packet or a bundle of paper similar to a notebook or book. The invention relates to a machine which makes it possible not only to bind together a number of sheets by their binding edges, but also to join two or more sheets together or to include or add these sheets to one. number of sheets already bound.
It is known that it is possible to bind sheets of paper using a flexible film such as that obtainable by drying a colloidal solution of rubber applied to the back of the packet of sheets to be bound, but this binding method has not been applied to the classification of sheets of paper. The machine according to the invention makes it possible in particular to increase the number of sheets of a bundle of bound sheets, by adding or inserting new sheets therein. or bind together a set of sheets in a single operation.
The machine according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a support supporting the sheets stacked on it, alignment devices associated with this support and forming stops for the sheets thus supported, so that their binding edges are kept aligned, a compression member for clamping in the vicinity of their binding edges the supported and aligned sheets.
an adhesive reservoir which can be closed, a positive device mounted inside this reservoir for applying the adhesive to the aligned and compressed binding edges of the sheets, a closure member automatically closing the reservoir when the machine is not not in service, and a second reservoir intended to receive the dispersing phase and communicating with the first by means capable of allowing this phase to pass.
Said adhesive capable of forming a flexible film may be an aqueous suspension of rubber in the colloidal state. for example latex. When using adhesives, whether on an industrial scale or in the office or at home, it is difficult to prevent the adhesive from drying and coagulating in the resin that contains it or on its accessories. . In the machine according to the invention, drying or coagulation of the adhesive is practically prevented, so that it can be kept fresh and ready for use for long periods of time.
Not only is the adhesive kept liquid or fresh and ready to use, but the device which transfers this adhesive and applies it to the pack of sheets is not polluted with dried adhesive. An embodiment of the machine according to the invention is described below with reference to the attached drawings and by way of example. as well as its operation. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the machine.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view with partial cutaway.
The fi - * 3 is a sectional view through the line III-III in fi. 2.
The fi-. 4 is a sectional view through the line IV-IV in fig. 2.
The fi-. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cylinder and associated members, with partial cutaway.
The fies. 6, 7 and 8 are elevational views of three different segments of the cylinder, FIG. 6 showing partial tearing towards its middle, and the fi-. 7 and 8 at one end to allow representation, these three elevation views being considered looking in the direction of the arrows A, B and C on the fi-. 9, which is an elevational view of the end of the cylinder.
The fi-. 10 is a sectional view taken along the line X-X in FIG. 8.
The machine comprises a housing 1, having a middle housing IA and shoulders 1B, the housing 1A having an inclined surface provided with a series of parallel ribs 1C on which the sheets to be placed are placed. .reater, as visible in fig. 3, where the sheets are .represented in 2. Small protrusions 1D of the shoulders 1B form secondary housings or housings for part of the control mechanism, an operating handle 3 being fixed to a shaft 3A journalled in bearings 3B 1D auxiliary housings (fig. 1). The handle 3 has at each end an ear 3C and a pair of 3D legs directed downwards.
On the fie. 1 to 4, the handle is shown in its rest position. In fig. 3, the chain lines represent the position to which the handle can be brought by pivoting to the right, while the chain lines show on the wire. 4 the position to which it can be brought by pivoting to the left.
If we refer to the fia. 3, it is seen that the binding edges of the sheets 2 are in contact with alignment ribs 4A of a cylinder 4 which is pivotally mounted in pairs of bearings 4B, 4C (see fig. 2 and 5). inside a reservoir 5 comprising an orifice 5A forming a window through which the binding edges are introduced. When the machine is not in service, the orifice 5A is closed by a curved plate 5B cooperating with the upper edge of the orifice, the plate 5B being mounted on the shaft 3A so as to be able to pivot freely and comprising two downwardly directed plate-shaped extensions 5C (see fig. 1).
The curved plate 5B not only serves as a cover for the reservoir, but also exerts a downward pressure on the sheets 2 in the vicinity of their binding edge, as shown in FIG. 3. In this position, it no longer closes the tank. On the other side of the sheets is disposed a lip 6 which cooperates with the plate forming a cover 5 to grip these sheets in the position shown, that is to say by allowing binding.
The reservoir 5 contains a latex-based adhesive, the level of which is shown at 7. The cylinder 4 is immersed in the adhesive. This cylinder is formed by a porous material, for example porcelain devoid of glaze or any other suitable ceramic material, treated in a manner well known per se, for example using collodion, in order to make it semi-permeable. . Inside the cylinder 4 is placed a liquid 8 constituting the dispersing phase and compensating for the evaporation of the latex-based adhesive contained in the reservoir 5.
The outer surface of cylinder 4 has four parts or segments. One of these parts is smooth and, among the other three, one has ribs 4A which serve to align the binding edges, the next has members to slightly separate the edges before applying the adhesive, and the last door of the members serving to bring the adhesive above the level 7 to apply it to the binding edges. These segments will be described in more detail later. When the machine is at rest, the cylinder 4 is brought into a position such that the ribs 4A can (as shown in fig. 3) serve to align the binding edges.
During the operation of the machine, this cylinder is moved angularly so as to bring successively the separating segments of the edges and the segments of application of the adhesive in contact with the binding edges, in order to allow the application. cation of the adhesive for binding.
When the sheets are removed once bound, the excess adhesive is ejected by the pressure exerted by the edge of the cover plate 5B, which acts by cooperation with the lip 6.
Operation is ensured as follows. In the normal position of the machine which corresponds to the state of use, the members are arranged as shown in FIGS. 1 @ and 4. The lower edge of the plate 5B is applied against the lip 6 and is also in contact with a rubber band 5D fixed to the upper edge 5E of the orifice 5, partially closing this orifice. In this way, the container containing the latex is normally closed from the atmosphere. To use the machine, you must lift the curved plate 5B to allow the introduction of the sheets through the hole 5A.
This plate is lifted by means of the handle 3 which is moved to the right as shown in fig. 3 by mixed lines, so that the 3D legs, exerting pressure against the * extensions in the form of plates 5C, move them away towards the #_, arch and the articulated plate on the shaft 3A to the right. The lower end of each extension 5C is articulated at 9A on a rod 9 and the rod 9 passes through an orifice 10 of the housing 1 to reach a piston shock absorber 11. There are therefore two rods 9 and two piston shock absorbers. 11 (see fig. 2).
The end of the rod 9 located inside the piston shock absorber carries an udder 11A, provided with a washer or gasket 11B. A helical spring 9B working under pressure surrounds the rod 9 and bears at one end against a washer 11C which closes the orifice 11D of the piston damper, and at the other end against a stop 9C of the rod 9 . So. the spring 9B urges the rod 9 and the extension 5C to the right, looking at FIG. 3 and it thus tends to close the plate 5B or to apply it downwards on the sheets 2. The dampers tend to oppose this effect and to dampen it in order to avoid a sudden movement of this plate 5B .
The plate 5B being raised, the sheets are introduced through the orifice 5A until their binding edges abut against the ribs 4A of the cylinder. Then release the handle which is moved to the left (looking at fig. 3 and 4). The eyes 3C carried by the handle come into contact with the ends of curved racks 12 mounted on the shaft 3A, so that a subsequent movement of the handle towards the reed moves the racks 12 around the shaft. 3A despite the force of helical springs 12A working in traction, connected in 12B to the frame and in 12C to extensions 12D of the racks.
These extensions come to bear against damping cleats 13 mounted in the frame, in order to limit the clockwise movement of the racks 12 under the effect of the springs 12A. The racks move in holes 1 E of the frame (see fig. 1). The teeth of the: racks mesh with corresponding teeth of pinions 14 connected to cylinder 4, so that movement of the handle to the left against the action of springs 12A causes the cylinder to rotate clockwise.
The arrangement of cylinder 4 is shown in FIG. 5. This cylinder is closed at each end by end pieces 15 each comprising a flange 15A and a plug 15B, discs 15C preventing the adhesive from moving outwards. along end pieces, and bearing surfaces 15D journalled in the pair of bearings 4B. The end pieces 15 are mounted on a hollow element 16 of square cross section passing through the cylinder from one end to the other.
At its left end (looking at fig. 5), the element 16 is flared outwards as indicated at 16A ; it carries at the other end a plug 16B provided with an axial thread 16C in which a bolt 16D is screwed. This bolt forcibly applies a washer 16E against a shoulder 17, so that the tightening of the bolt 16D ensures a rigid locking by clamping all the cylinder components on the hollow element with square section 16. On the outside of the end pieces 15, the pinions 14 are mounted between washers 14A, 14B on the hollow element 16 with a square section.
In addition, outwardly are disposed bearing elements 18 provided with positioning flanges 18A and bearing surfaces 18B journalled in the pair of bearings 4C. The right-hand bearing element 18 is provided with a cavity serving to receive the washer 16E and the bolt 16D. At the other end, a filling nozzle 19 provided with a threaded cap 19A completes the assembly; it is blocked by the flared end 16A of the element 16 with a square section. It will be noted that this element 16 has holes 20.
To fill the cylinder 4 with solvent or to replenish it, the solvent is poured into the filling nozzle 19, from which it flows through the element 16 to exit through the holes 20.
When the cylinder 4 rotates clockwise, the ribs 4A are driven upwards and are moved away from the binding edges, and the next segment of the cylinder surface, which is formed by ramps or edges 21, moves opposite the aforementioned edges of the sheets and spreads them slightly in order to allow the application of the adhesive by the following segment which, before the operation of the handle, was immersed in the adhesive located at the bottom of the tank 5. There is shown in detail in fig. 6 to 10 segments of the cylinder.
In fig. 9, which is an end view, the segments are generally designated by arrows A, B and C, which also correspond to the direction in which one looks on the fi-. 6, 7 and 8. On the fi-. 6, the ribs 4A against which the binding edges are aligned are shown with respect to the oblique ramps 21. On the fia ,. 7, the ribs 4A and the ramps 21 are shown with respect to the third segment, which has oblique rows 22 formed of projections 22A and recesses 22B alternating with each other.
These rows retain the amount of adhesive required as this segment is lifted by rotating the cylinder away from the mass of adhesive in the bottom of the reservoir 5 and applies this adhesive to the binding edges of the sheets.
When the handle has been pushed to the left as far as possible, the application of the adhesive is complete. This handle is then released, which is returned to its normal position by the res out 12A, the cylinder also being returned to its normal position. The sheets 2 once bound are then released from between the lip 6 and the lower edge of the plate 5, which clamps the binding edges to eject the excess adhesive and which also removes the adhesive which may have adhered to the sheets. upper and lower leaves. It can be seen on examination of fig. 3 and 4 that the reservoir 5 comprises an upper half and a lower half. The lower half forms part of the frame, while the upper half is removable, assembly fingers 23 being arranged for this purpose.
This upper half is normally fixed by pous evenings 23A subjected to the biasing of springs, engaging in the frame and being able to cooperate with holes 23B, their withdrawal being able to be controlled by fingers 23C.
The adhesive is supplied to the machine by the introduction of a self-sealing bottle 24. This bottle comprises a gou lot 24A closed by a ball 24B under the action of a compression spring 24C. Externally, the bottle has a 24D thread by which it can be fixed in a receiving sleeve 25. When it is screwed in place, this bottle closes the upper end of the receiving sleeve.
This receiving sleeve has a needle 25A which (as visible in fig. 3) engages the ball 24B and pushes it inwards and to one side, so that the contents of the bottle can flow out. through the orifice 24A into a duct 25B which forms the extension of the receiving sleeve 25 and which ends in the reservoir 5. The total capacity of the bottle, the receiving sleeve, the duct and the reservoir is such that the level indicated at 7 is reached when a full bottle is introduced in place and opened in the manner - shown.
The cylinder 4 is made of a porous material, for example porcelain devoid of glaze, treated so as to be made semi-permeable so that the dispersing phase can reach from inside this cylinder into the adhesive, but its wall is such that the adhesive particles cannot pass through the cylinder. Not only is the adhesive present at the bottom of the reservoir 5 maintained in a satisfactory condition. but the outer surface of the cylinder (comprising the ribs 4A, the ramps 21, and the projections and the cavities 22A and 22B) is not polluted in practice by the coagulated adhesive.
If a machine is used without a device for compensating for the evaporation of the adhesive, the adhesive dries up soon and makes it impossible to operate the machine.
The adhesive used can be a liquid in two simple phases, formed for example of rubber particles (which constitute the dispersed phase) and water (which forms the dispersing phase). On the other hand, the adhesive can advantageously comprise a substance in solution in the dispersing phase. In this case, this substance should be found at the same concentration in the water contained in the porous cylinder which the machine preferably comprises. The porosity is then adjusted such that this cylinder is impermeable to all substances in contact, except water. As the cylinder is substantially airtight, no evaporation can occur from the solution it contains.
Slow evaporation takes place from the reservoir as the reservoir must be opened continuously to allow the use of the adhesive. The dispersant phase of the adhesive tends to have a higher concentration of dissolved substance, but osmotic pressure causes water to pass from the cylinder to this reservoir, so as to equalize the concentration of dissolved substance. When the volume of the cylinder is large in relation to the volume of the part of the reservoir which is occupied by the adhesive, the water losses of the adhesive are automatically compensated for at any time. Water losses from the cylinder can be observed directly and can be compensated for by adding water.
Since the osmotic pressure of suitable solution substances is high, a small difference between the static fluid columns on either side of the porous cylinder wall has a negligible effect.
