of the Journal of Research of the National Bureau of Standards).

Process for the production of leather In order to improve the practical value of leather, the tanned material is often subjected to special treatments. This subheading includes, for example: Treatment with.
Fat emulsions (Liekern), mechanical incorporation of oils and fats, impregnation of the dry leather with. molten fat paraffin - resin mixtures, impregnation of the dry leather with organic solutions of higher molecular weight resins and polymerisation products.
In recent years, attempts have also been made to bring monomeric vinyl or diene compounds capable of polymerization into the leather and to polymerize them there (see, for example, Oehler and Hilduff, Research Paper RP 1951, Vol. 42, January 1949, Part,
of the Journal of Research of the National Bureau of Standards).
Another possibility is being sought in the direction of incorporating relatively low molecular weight, incompletely polymerized vinyl compounds into the leather and then using catalysts and catalysts there. Heat further to polymerize.
All preselections that work with solvents have major economic and application-related disadvantages (see for example JALCA 44/19 # 49 \ pages 2 '& 4, Cheronis). Proposals have also been made to use polymers in latex form, a process that would be particularly useful for tannery, there.
it is applicable to wet leather during the manufacturing process.
However, their application, especially with thick, heavy leathers, is a problem that has not yet been overcome. They consist in the fact that the polymer emulsions were not stable enough to achieve a sufficient depth effect, and that even high emulsifier and stabilizer additives before or after the polymerisation are not sufficient to ensure safe work in practice enable. Will for example.
For some operational reasons such an emulsion becomes unstable during processing and the polymer deposits on the leather surface, it is no longer possible to carry the leather with it. simple means, for example. with water to make it usable like that.
The subject matter of the present patent is a process for the production of leather which is characterized in that polymer emulsions or mixed polymer emulsions which contain at least 2% anionic emulsifiers containing sulfo groups are used,
arid mixes with tanning agents on the animal material resulting from the tanning process and brings about an acidic to neutral reaction. The added tanning agents can be of vegetable or synthetic origin. The application happens. expediently under mechanical fulling action, for example in a tanning or hot air barrel.
It is surprising that substances which, like the vegetable or synthetic tanning agents, are known to often have a disruptive effect on emulsion systems, but when suitable polymer emulsions and quantitative ratios are selected, they do not do this and therefore have not so far. the achieved penetration of the leather and the regular achievement of the desired results.
Suitable polymer emulsions are, for example, those composed of vinyl compounds, such as dichloroethene, vinyl chloride, acrylic esters, styrene, acrylonitrile and others, individually or as a mixture with one another or with diene compounds, the latter being said to be in deficit.
The type and amount of emulsifiers are expediently selected so that a favorable “particle size” is achieved. The proportion of anionic emulsifiers containing sulfo groups is at least 2 / o of the dry substance of the polymer, expediently more.
Suitable tanning agents for the process are vegetable tanning extracts, in particular quebracho and mimosa extract, and synthetic tanning agents, such as: they see, for example, according to the process of the German patent specifications nos. 675775, 611671 and 606272 and French Patent No. 897222 can be obtained, as well as purified so-called sulphite waste liquors containing lignosulphonic acid salts.
The quantitative ratio of tanning agent to polymer can vary within wide limits. Mixtures in a ratio of 1: 1 to 1: 5 are expediently used. The reaction must be neutral or acidic.
Depending on the choice of the polymerisation product, the emulsifier and the tanning agent - all types and proportions of which are of influence - one can obtain enamels which either set like a gel after a long enough time for use or which are indefinitely long remain unchanged.
The inventive method comes for the. Production of chrome leather and for the production of leather tanned with vegetable and / or synthetic tanning agents or with chrome and vegetable and / or synthetic tanning agents in question. Chrome leather offers the least resistance to the penetration of polymer emulsions.
In the case of the manufacture of vacheleder, for example, the pelts can be easily tanned through, pressed by folding, leveling and then with the folded condition. impregnate the tanning polymer emulsion and:
Finally, rub it in as usual in a sink, barrel or offset. The treatment with the terbant polymer emulsion can also be carried out after the usual tanning process in the manner of the so-called Vache finish in a hot air barrel. Tanning oils, filling and lead shakers can be used in the same work step.
The process leads to significant improvements in terms of structural strengthening, water tightness and abrasion.
Example 1 65 kg of a 3lisehung of 52.5 parts of a 40 percent mixture polynierisate emulsion (consisting of iron lliselil) olyitiei-isat, from dichloroethene and Al-i-lsätirebutylester, and 15 parts of the Na salt of long-chain paraffin sulfonic acids , based on 100 Trol:
- kenteile polymerizatj and 12; 5 parts of a 56 percent (tanned substance, which is obtained in accordance with French patent application no. 897222) are tanned in 3'0'0 kg, -e sufficiently moist vaebel leather crottons with the supply of warm air (approx .
74 exposure temperature) for 2 hours. Then the leather, which has absorbed the polymer-tanning agent emulsion well and evenly, is finished as usual, but without any further addition of fillers. A leather is obtained which looks more water-repellent, waterproof and more abrasion-resistant - which is equivalent to an improvement in the utility value - in comparison with normally tanned leather, as the following values show.

The pelts are tanned in color. The leather is then treated in the barrel with 30.9 kg of a mixture according to Example 3a, which has been diluted beforehand, and finished in the same way as in the above example.
The result is light-colored, very strong, permanent leathers which are more water-repellent, more water-tight and more abrasion-resistant than normally tanned leathers.
