Internal combustion engine with opposed pistons The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine with opposed pistons, characterized in that it comprises a removable cylinder carried by a frame, stopping means intended to keep this cylinder against any axial movement in the frame and removable clamping means arranged to hold the cylinder in place, the arrangement being such that it is sufficient to release the clamping means so that the cylinder containing the udders can be removed from the frame , the pistons then being, during this removal,
released from the mechanisms connecting them to the motor shaft without it being necessary to disassemble these mechanisms.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the engine according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a vertical section, by the line I-I of FIG. 2, of this form of execution.
. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through 2-2 of FIG. 1, the connecting rods being omitted and certain parts being shown in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a section through 3-3 of FIG. 1 of a piston and the oscillating lever associated with it. Fig. 4 is a partial side view, partly in broken lines, showing the device for fixing the upper part of the housing.
FIG: 5 is a view on a larger scale of this fixing device.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation, showing the attachment of the exhaust channel.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of this clip.
The engine shown comprises a cylinder dre 1, open at both ends, of years. which slide two opposed pistons 2. Each udder has a flat face 3, respectively 4, at each end, separated by the length of the piston. The outer ends 1b of the cylinder have a larger diameter than the central part 1a of this cylinder.
In each of these ends slides the outer part 3b, forming a guide shoe, of the corresponding piston, the inner part 2b of this piston sliding in the central part 1a of the cylinder. The parts 3b forming guide shoes at the same time constitute the pistons of a purging air pump. . The pistons 2 are provided with sealing rings 2a and 3a. The working faces 4 of the pistons and the part 1a of the cylinder which surrounds them and which is between said faces, when the pistons are closest to one another, delimit the combustion chamber of the engine.
Each piston is connected to a crank of a crankshaft 19, by means of a piston pin 5 pivoting in a sleeve 6 mounted in this piston 2, the pivot axis being transverse to the longitudinal axis of the piston and located between the ends of the latter, substantially equidistant from the segments 2a and 3a, and forming a diameter of the piston. The axis 5 has a cylindrical transverse bore 7 (as can be seen in particular in FIG. 3).
An oscillating lever 9 is associated with the piston 2 by its cylindrical end 8 surrounded by a bronze ring 10, which slides inside the bore 7 of the piston pin.
The ring 10 has on its outer curved surface a propeller-shaped grease groove (not shown) which is supplied with oil from the oil channel 11 and the space 13. The sleeve 6 also has on its side. curved face an oil groove in the form of a helix (not shown) which communicates both with the space 13 and with an oil channel 12 opening into an orifice 14 from which the oil is projected against the inner face 15 of piston 2, thus helping to cool it. The oil then flows into the crankcase 16a of the frame 16 of the engine through a slot 17 made in the wall of each piston and through slots 18 made in the wall of the cylinder.
Each rocker lever 9 also passes, from the piston pin 5, through the slot 17 of the piston and the slot 18 of the cylinder, to enter the crankcase 16a. The oscillating lever passes naturally with a certain play between the edges of the slots 17 and 18.
The end of the lever 9 is connected to the corresponding level 21 of the crankshaft 19 by a connecting rod 20. Each oscillating lever 9 pivots about a pivot 22 whose ends are mounted in struts 23 arranged on either side. other side of the swing lever. These struts 23 are made of a very strong steel and are trapped in the casting in the frame 16 of the engine, which is made of a metal or light alloy, for example aluminum. In the lower end 24 of each oscillating lever 9 is introduced a hinge pin 25 for the connecting rod 20. The two cranks 21 are opposed.
The cranks can make an angle between them slightly different from 1800 in order to allow the piston which uncovers the exhaust ports 40 to do so before the intake lights 43 are discovered. One can naturally provide other means to achieve this result, for example by lowering the axis of the crankshaft 19 below the straight line which joins the centers of the axes 25 when the pistons occupy their middle position.
The crankshaft 19 rotates in bearings 26 - 26a mounted in the frame 16 of the engine, an oil seal 27 being provided as shown in fig: 2. The oil is contained in the part lower part of the crankcase 16a, from where it is pumped by an oil pump (not shown) through a series of channels 84 and 20a drilled in the crankshaft 19 and the connecting rods 20, the channel 11 of the levers 9, the space 13 and the hole 12 drilled for this purpose in the pistons 2.
These oil channels are connected by orifices drilled in the various members with les.surfaces to be lubricated, the bearings themselves having suitable oil grooves cut into their surfaces. Part of the oil greases the bearings and part passes through the channels to be projected through the port 14, as described above.
The two swinging levers 9 are symmetrically similar in that they are arranged so that, when the axis 25 of the right swinging arm is on the same side as the observer in FIG. 1, the axis 25 of the left swinging arm is on the side opposite to the observer.
Radial fins 29 are provided on the flywheel 28 and the flywheel housing 30 (one piece with the crankshaft housing 16a) has air outlets 31 on its periphery. An end cover 30a of the housing 30 has a V-shaped rim 32 and the housing 30 has a corresponding V-shaped flange 33. The cover 30a is held in place by a resilient clamping ring 34 provided with a positive quick opening device (not shown) which holds it in place on the flanges 32 and 33.
The fins 29 and the housing 30 form a cooling fan which circulates air through the motor. This fan has worse the air through a channel 36 provided with fins which communicates the outside air with the crankcase 16a. The fins 37 and 37a, located both inside the crankcase and the channel 36, help transfer the heat from the lubricating oil contained in this housing to the air circulating in the channel 36 and, by then cool the engine. The fan also sucks in air through an inlet 35 communicating with a chamber 38 surrounding the central part of the cylinder 1, which is provided with fins 39.
The chamber 38 communicates with the outside air through suitably arranged openings, and baffles (not shown) directing the flow of air to the upper part of the cylinder.
The cylinder has a series of openings 40 (already mentioned) which form the exhaust lights and which communicate with an exhaust channel 41 leading to an exhaust pipe 42. This channel 41 is formed by a hollow ring in two parts 41c, 41d held by suitable clips 41a (fig. 6 and 7) in engagement with tabs 41b formed on part 41c and on tabs 42a formed on part 41d in order to allow it to be removed and replaced on cylinder 1.
Another series of openings 43 form the intake openings for the purging and filling air, which communicate with a peripheral groove 44 (fig. 1), the side walls 45 of which are cast with the cylinder 1. A ring 46 is applied against the walls 45 and one or more openings 47 are cut in only part of the ring 46, as will be seen below. The cylinder is provided with a fuel injection device 48, the engine being compression ignition.
The frame 16 stops upwards at the plane 49, which is a horizontal plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the cylinder of which it contains a diameter.
Ribs 50 to 53, provided to removably hold the cylinder in the upper part of the frame 16, cooperate with the cylinder. Each of the ribs 52 and 53 is machined so as to form a semicircular recess of the same diameter as the outside diameter of the outer ends 54 of the cylinder.
A groove is machined in the two outer ends of the cylinder and in the ribs 52 and 53, in which is housed a sealing ring 55 of rubber or other resilient material. The rib 50 is machined so as to constitute a semi-circular recess of the same diameter as the outside diameter of the ring 46, and the rib 50 and the ring 46 are each hollowed out with a groove in which a ring fits. sealing 56.
The rib 51 is machined so as to constitute a semi-circular recess of the same diameter as the rib 50, and a flange 57 of the cylinder 1 is machined to this same diameter, said flange and the rib 51 being grooved to hold a ring d 'sealing 56.
To maintain the cylinder dre longitudinally on the frame 16, a lug 58 penetrates holes drilled in the wall of the cylinder and in the frame 16, as shown. This allows thermal expansion and contraction of the cylinder 1 in the longitudinal direction, while preventing its movement as a whole. The lug 58 is located midway between the ends of the cylinder 1; it can naturally be fixed either on the frame 16 or on the cylinder 1.
Other means can be provided to identify the position of the cylinder; it is thus, for example, that either the cylinder or the frame of the engine may have a peripheral rim intended to cooperate with a corresponding groove made in the other element.
Each of the pivots 22 is substantially the same distance from the lug 58, which. is disposed centrally, both in the lateral direction and in the longitudinal direction, of the frame 16 of the engine. Likewise, as can be seen in particular on fi-. 3, the longitudinal axes of the oscillating levers 9 are in a vertical plane passing through the axis of the cylinder 1, so that the oscillating levers are consequently arranged symmetrically in the engine.
The cylinder is removably held in place on the frame 16 by an upper casing 59 which is removably attached to this frame 16. This casing has a flat underside which rests on the plane 49 of the frame 16, with interposition between the two contiguous surfaces of paper impregnated with a composition for joint. Four semi-circular sealing surfaces 60, 61, 62 and 63 are provided, spaced from each other so as to correspond to the ribs 50, 51, 52 and 53.
Each of these surfaces, as well as the cylinder 1, are grooved so as to house the sealing rings 55 and 56, as in the case of the ribs 50 to 53. The air pump, whose pistons are formed by the parts 3b of the pistons 2, is connected to the atmosphere sphere and to the combustion chamber as follows. A channel 64 for the purging and filling air starts from one of the ends 54 of the cylinder, and another channel 65 starts from the other end 54, the two channels communicating with the peripheral groove 44 through the openings 47 , channel 65 being extended at 65a (fig. 2) in order to communicate with channel 64.
As I mentioned above, the openings 47 concern only a part of the periphery of the ring 46, which is inside the channel 64. The outer wall 66 of the upper casing 59 forms a wall of the two channels 64 and 65 and the internal walls 67 and 68 complete them. walls of these channels.
An air intake 69 has a valve disc 70 loaded by a spring, this valve allows atmospheric air to be drawn into the channels 64 and 65, but does not allow the air to exit in the direction reverse. The seals 55 and 56 prevent the exchange of air between the channels 64 and 65 and the outside atmosphere, the interior of the crankcase 16a and the cooling chamber 38.
Referring to fig. 4 and 5, it can be seen that the housing 59 is removably attached to the frame 16 of the engine, thus keeping the cylinder 1 in place by clamping on the frame 16, by means of four manually operated toggle latches, at a rate of 'one towards each end of the inside of the crankcase top, on either side of the crankcase. Fig. 5 represents one of these latches.
Each of them comprises a curved connecting rod 71 in the form of a hook, articulated by a pivot 71a on a toggle lever 72, itself articulated at 72a on a curved connecting rod 72b, in turn articulated at 72c on an articulated connecting rod 72d in 72nd on the housing 59. The hook of the connecting rod 71 is hooked on a stud 73 of the frame 16. The hooked connecting rods 71 are accessible through openings 74 made in each end of the housing 16a, the openings 74 being covered by plates 75 (fig. 1).
The casing 59 could also be bolted to the frame 16.
The cylinder 1 is removably held in the housing 59, so that it can be removed as a block with this housing, the pistons still being in the cylinders and the exhaust channel 41 and the exhaust pipe 42 still being attached to the cylinder. If it is desired to remove the channel 41, this can be done later, but since the pistons can be removed from the cylinder after having separated the housing 59 from the frame 16, it is not necessary to remove this channel, unless it needs to be replaced.
Circular flat discs 76 (FIG. 1) are removably held in grooves 77 made in the semi-circular openings of the frame 16 and in grooves 78 made in semi-circular openings of the casing 59, rubber seals. 79 sealing the discs in these grooves.
The semi-circular openings in the 59 "crankcase must be larger in diameter than the widest part of the pistons 2 in order to allow the latter to be removed from the end of cylinder 1, while the cylinder is hand held. inside the crankcase 59. The injection pump 48 is actuated, via a rocker arm 80, a push rod 81 and a cam roller 82, by a cam 83 rotating with the crankshaft 19. On can access the crankshaft for disassembly by removing the bearing caps 26, 26a and components 85 and 86.
Due to the fact that the end 8 of the lever 9 neck smooth in the bore 7 of the piston pin 5, the oil fills the space 13 and then., When the end 8 moves upwards, the oil is projected in jets through port 14.
If we want to descale the cylinder, we can remove the housing 59, with the cylinder 1 containing the pistons 2, in a vertical direction, that is to say along a straight line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. The ends 8 of the swing levers 9 simply slide out of the openings 7 of the piston pins 5, thereby releasing the pistons from the swing levers. It is therefore not necessary to remove the mechanisms connecting the pistons to the crankshaft. The pistons can then be removed from the cylinder which can remain attached to the crankcase 59.
Due to the sliding of the ends 8 of the swing levers in the piston pins 5 and as a result of the rotation of the latter in the bosses of the piston, the distance of each end of the cylinder above the crankcase is not critical. and it is therefore possible to accept a certain misalignment of the cylinder in the frame with respect to the crankshaft, without imposing a detrimental stress on the engine.
The struts 23 absorb the main forces in a straight line. dynamics which arise between the shafts 22 while the engine is running.
Castings can be used to manufacture all of the components of the engine described, or the frame 16 and the upper casing 59 can be constructed by welding or joining rolled materials or the like, or the two solutions can be combined.
The exhaust ports 40 are closer to the longitudinal midpoint (on which the lug 58 sits) than the intake ports 43, so that the exhaust ports are uncovered first when running the pistons. outwards. Thanks to this construction, the direction of rotation of the motor can be reversed at will, by turning cylinder 1 and crankcase 59 end to end in the frame 16 of the motor and by adjusting the cam 83 de, control of the fuel injector so that the latter injects fuel in good time.
The center of the piston pin 5 does not have to coincide with a diameter of the piston, but may be located slightly below so as to allow the rocker lever to be shortened slightly.
The cylinder 2 can be vertical or be placed horizontally below the crankshaft quin 19.
Although a single cylindrical engine has been described, it is obvious that the invention can be applied to polycylindrical engines.
A rotary fan could be used for sweeping, in which case cylinder 1 would have the same diameter over its entire length and piston rings 3a would be replaced by a single scraper ring placed near the outer end of the piston. .
Likewise, although it was assumed that the cylinder was air cooled, it could easily be conceived of water cooling.
