Bimetallic element for obtaining mechanical effects by magnetostriction It is known that all magnetic products undergo a variation in dimensions when they are subjected to the action of a magnetic field (Joule effect). This modification, measured parallel to the applied field, is either an elongation (positive magnetostriction) or a contraction (negative magnetostriction). Some materials, such as iron, see their magnetostriction change sign depending on the size of the field.
The coefficient of magnetostrictibn @, physical magnitude, which measures the amplitude of the phenomenon, is defined by the relative variation in length

experienced by the material when it is magnetically saturated.

Among the most widespread applications, we can cite the generation of ultrasound for marine soundings, the precipitation of dust, the destruction of microbes, the production of cavitation phenomena, the production of intimate mixtures or emulsions by magnetostrictive agitation. , etc.
For these applications, the active element is an open or closed magnetic circuit, laminated or not, made of a metal or an alloy with a high magnetostriction coefficient. But, whatever the material chosen, the amplitude of the mechanical effects is always low. In fact, the average magnetostriction coefficients of the most common magnetic products are as follows If, for example, a nickel bar 1 m long is subjected to a sufficiently intense magnetic field to produce the saturation of the metal, this bar will shorten by 0.003 centimeter.
It has now been found that it is possible to produce effects. mechanical by magnetostriction of an incomparably greater order of magnitude by constituting the active element, not of a single material, but by associating two metals or alloys with different magnetostriction coefficients, so as to constitute a bimetallic whole. as similar, in its appearance and in its embodiment, to thermal bimetals.
The bimetallic element. object of the invention, to obtain mechanical effects by magnetostriction, is characterized in that it consists of two strips of metal materials having expansion coefficients at least approximately equal and. longitudinal waves calculated by the formula
EMI0002.0003
in which E represents the modulus of elasticity and d the density of the material considered, at least approximately equal.
Under these conditions, it results, as will be seen later, that its natural frequency of vibration is not affected, as a first approximation, by the temperature variations to which it can be subjected and that its vibration amplitude is maximum. .
The advantage of having practically equal speeds v consists in a better use of resonance phenomena. We thus act on the amplitude of the vibration and not on the stability of the frequency. The equality of the expansion coefficients; decreases the effect of temperature on the vibration frequency, in that it prevents the bimetallic element from behaving like a thermal bimetallic strip, and from deforming (curved cross section), which would modify the moment of inertia involved in the calculation of the frequency.
But this particularity obviously does not influence the variations in dimensions and modulus linked to changes in temperature, the repercussions of which on the frequency, although generally small compared to the effect of curvature, cannot be strictly considered. as null. This is why it is only as a first approximation that the frequency of vibration is not affected.
Preferably, the two constituent parts of the bimetallic element are welded flat over their entire length and constitute an elastically deformable strip or strip of constant thickness.
In the following description, two embodiments of the bimetallic element according to the invention will be described by way of example. The following preliminary considerations will make it possible to understand the reasons for the choice of the materials constituting their different elements.
Consider a bimetallic element having the shape of a strip of length L and thickness e, consisting of 2 strips welded flat <I> A </I> and <I> B, </I> having respectively the coefficients of magné tostriction XA and .B. If we embed this element at one of its ends and submit it to the action of a magnetic field, we see that it is curved, and the deflection due to the change in curvature increases as the size of the field increases, until the magnetic saturation is reached.
If A is in nickel and B in Invar, that the length L is equal to 1 m and the thickness e is equal to 1 millimeter, calculation and experience show that the total deflection can reach 3 centimeters, when the respective thicknesses of the metal and the alloy constituting the blade are well chosen, which represents a displacement a thousand times greater than that mentioned above.
It is obvious that the element will be all the more sensitive as the expression <B> U </B> <I> - </I>% B is greater, which can be achieved by choosing for A a material with strong negative magnetostriction, for example nickel, and for B a material with high positive magnetostriction, for example a 35-65% Ni ferronickel.
It is necessary to take into account the modulus of elasticity and the density of each of the constituent metals or alloys. The dynamic applications of the bimetallic element cause the natural frequency of the vibrating element to intervene, which is, other things being equal, a function of the speed of propagation of the longitudinal waves in this element. Now, we know that this speed v is given by the expression
EMI0003.0011
in which E is the modulus of elasticity and d the density of the material in which the waves propagate. This formula only applies to longitudinal waves, since the speed of the transverse disturbances is, moreover, a function of the wave length and the radius of gyration.
This formula is only suitable for a sample whose length is large compared to the dimensions of the cross section. It should therefore be specified that this is the propagation speed of the longitudinal waves.
To obtain an acute resonance curve, the wave propagation speeds in the two parts of the element must be as close as possible, which could limit the choice between several metals or alloys that can be used.
In summary, the choice of the two metals or alloys to be combined will be determined by taking into account 1 o their respective magnetostriction coefficients, determining the sensitivity of the bimetallic element; 2 #, their expansion coefficients; 3o of their modulus of elasticity and of their density. It is not necessary that the two metals or alloys be magnetic provided that one of them exhibits sufficient magnetostrictive properties; likewise, the two metals or alloys may exhibit magnetostriction coefficients of the same signs or of opposite signs.
The result is that the bimetallic elements can be classified in one of the following three categories having respectively increasing deflections I - Elements formed by the association of a metal or. High positive or negative magnetostriction alloy with a metal or magnetostriction alloy of the same sign, but very low (or no).
II - Elements formed by the association of a metal or alloy with high magnetostriction, positive or negative, with a non-magnetic metal or alloy.
III - Elements formed by the association of two metals or magnetic alloys, one with positive magnetostriction, the other with negative magnetostriction.
Let us then consider two embodiments each formed of a bimetallic element of type III.
In the first embodiment, where only high sensitivity is sought, for example by hot rolling, nickel (7 ,, = - 30 X 10-s) will be associated with a 50% fer- ronickel. Ni (J. = -i- 25 to 30 X. 10-6).
In the second embodiment, where it is also desired that the element be thermally compensated, the 50% alloy will be replaced by a 60% Ni ferronickel, the co-efficient of which is magnetostriction is a little weaker (k. = 20 to 25.10-0), but whose expansion coefficient is much closer to that of nickel,
as shown in the table below. The latter also shows that the wave propagation speed is also made closer to that of nickel.
