Capacitor The present invention relates to a capacitor comprising connecting members establishing an electrical connection between the electrodes forming part of an impregnated capacitor body, enveloped in a housing having, at one of its ends, an opening closed by a cover, near which is arranged one of said organs, and terminals intended to allow the capacitor to be connected to an external circuit.
Such a capacitor can be used in the electrical circuits of the ignition devices of internal combustion engines.
In tubular-type capacitors, after the strips of thin foil forming the electrodes of the capacitor and the insulating foils disposed therebetween are wound so as to provide the desired capacitance, the resulting paraffin is then usually im prened in view. to improve the dielectric properties of insulating sheets and to prevent the penetration of moisture. It has been found that due to the presence of paraffin, the electrical connection between the sheets forming the electrodes of the capacitor and the terminals of the capacitor is not always very efficient, and that the capacitors produced by this means have an electrical resistance. comparatively high strength and inductance.
In addition, connections have a tendency to loosen under harsh service conditions.
The present invention makes it possible to overcome these difficulties and to remedy the mentioned drawbacks. The capacitor forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that at least one of said connection members is constituted by an electrically conductive element having openings with sharp edges crossed by marginal parts of the corresponding electrode, said edges having for the purpose of ensuring metal-to-metal contact of these parts with said element, which is electrically connected to one of the terminals of the capacitor, and in that it comprises retaining means integral with said housing fixing said cover,
maintaining the body of the condenser in the casing and producing a deformation of the cover, and of elastic means arranged near the latter and opposite said openings of the electroconductive element, so that the marginal parts of said through electrode said openings are flattened so as to ensure connection with said electrically conductive element, the reaction force of the elastic means holding the cover under pressure against the housing, so that the latter is hermetically closed.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the capacitor according to the invention.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a -connection member that this embodiment comprises.
Fig. 4 is a section, on a larger scale, of part of the capacitor.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a terminal for connection to a conductor included in this embodiment.
Fig. 6 is a partial section, on a larger scale, showing the connection between the electrode of the capacitor and the connecting members of the openings that this embodiment comprises.
In the embodiment shown, the capacitor has a tubular winding, a type which can be used particularly for the ignition devices of internal combustion engines.
A housing 10, constituting a closed envelope of the capacitor, has the shape of a cylinder having a flat metal end wall 12. The housing 10 is preferably made of a conductive material such as bronze, aluminum, etc., and it carries, fixed for example by soldering, a mounting tab 13 which constitutes one of the circuit terminals of the capacitor.
The housing 10 is dimensioned to fit the body of the capacitor 15 comprising two electrodes of armor material 16 and 17, in the form of sheets, separated by sheets of dielectric material 18, wound on a mandrel to form a core. tubular capacitor body of determined capacity.
However, the body of the condenser could also consist of folded or pleated sheets, in accordance with the usual well known practice. The electrodes 16 and 17 are wound in a slightly axially offset arrangement such that the electrode 16 has an edge 22 not covered with dielectric, while the electrode 17 has an uncovered edge 23 (fig. 2 and 4). The capacitor could include electrodes made of a metallic dielectric material, preferably in the form of conductive strips or tapes separated by sheets of dielectric material.
The body 15 of the capacitor is impregnated with a suitable dielectric, preferably paraffin, before its introduction into the housing 10 open at one end thereof, and a member of an insulating material 24 is rolled around the outer surface. of the body 5 of the capacitor, forming an insulating layer between the body of the capacitor 15 and the casing 10 which surrounds it.
Before the introduction of the body of the capacitor 15 with its insulating element 24 into the housing 10, a connection member 25 (fig. 3) is arranged in the housing in the vicinity of the metal wall 12, to form an electrical connection between the electrode 16 of the capacitor and the metal casing 10 which forms one of the terminals of the capacitor circuit.
The capacitor comprises, in addition to the member 25 in the form of a flat circular plate, a disc 30. These members are made of a conductive material and each have several openings designated respectively by 26 and 31. The connection members 25 and 30 can be made of sheet steel with a cadmium coating to increase their electrical conductivity, as well as to eliminate the possibility of oxidation before final assembly. The openings 26 and 31 have sharp, rough edges 27 and 32, projecting from the surface of the body of the organ,
either on its two faces, or only on the surface located opposite the edges of the electrodes of the capacitor. The projecting edges 27 and 32 may be formed by surface burrs left by a tool or a punch, during the cutting or drilling of the conductive sheet.
The use of the connectors 25 and 30 with the openings 26 and 31 and the rough edges 27 and 32 directed towards the body of the capacitor, ensures that practically all impregnation products, for example paraffin, are practically removed. (or scrapes) portions of the edges of the electrode which sink into the openings, which ensures a good metal-to-metal bond between the connection members 25 and 30 and the bare edges 22 and 23 of the electrodes.
The configuration of the openings 26 and 31 can vary within wide limits of size and shape, as long as the dimensions and configuration of the openings provide sufficient open area to allow passage of the stripped edges of each of the electrodes of the capacitor. When the body 15 of the capacitor is assembled in the housing 10, the connection members 25 and 30 establish an electrical connection by several points of contact with the edges 22 and 23 of the electrodes.
We see in fig. 3, the connection member used to make the electrical connection between the edge 22 of the electrode 16 and the end metal wall 12 of the housing 10, through which a connection can be established with the external circuit.
As seen in this figure, the connection member is a circular plate 25 with a cadmium coating bearing several narrow rectangular openings 26, arranged radially forming angles of 60.1 and some of which extend from a neighboring part. from the center of the plateau to its periphery.
Two of the openings 26 connect to form a transverse opening 28 of rectangular shape which passes through the central portion of the tray and which is of a length slightly smaller than the diameter thereof. The openings 26, as well as the opening 28 are limited by the sharp edges 27 projecting on the surface of the plate 25 provided to form the member for removing the impregnation product.
After the connection member 25 is placed in position at the bottom of the housing 10, and the body 15 of the capacitor with the insulating gasket 24 are inserted inside, the open end of the housing 10 is closed and sealed. by a non-conductive member 35 comprising an output terminal of the capacitor.
This member 35 comprises a relatively rigid cover 36 of insulating material covered by a rubber element 37, forming an outer elastic layer. The cover 36 with the resilient member of the same diameter 37 is sized to fit tightly into the open end of the housing 10 and forms an insulating support for the connector member 30.
The connection member 30, in the form of a circular disc of sheet steel coated with cadmium, has a flat peripheral part with a recessed central part 38.
The peripheral part 34 of the member 30 has (FIG. 5) six regularly spaced cylindrical openings 31, each dimensioned to give an open surface allowing the penetration of a portion of the edge 23 of the electrode 17 of the capacitor. The hollow portion 38 has an opening and is shaped to receive the head of a rivet 40, so that this rivet does not protrude beyond the flat part 34.
At the rear of the member 30, and in direct contact with the recessed portion 38, is mounted a flexible split washer 41 open at its center, made of an elastic material. This washer has radial slots forming several large flexible teeth 42.
These teeth are supported on the inner face of the insulating cover 36, leaving a free annular space 43 between the mondelle and the rear face of the flat peripheral part 34 of the connection member. The insulating cover 36 and its elastic element 37 each have a central opening dimensioned to form a tight connection by pressure with the shank of the rivet 40.
The elastic member 37 is wedge-sealed by the end portion 45 of a ribbon-shaped terminal 46, by means of a retaining washer 47 which is strongly tightened by crushing the end of the rivet, as we see it in 48.
The close contact established between the different parts of the member 35 by the rivet 40 is improved by the compression of the elastic member 37 in the vicinity of its opening which there provides an effective closure which practically prevents the penetration of moisture. A watertight and moisture-tight seal is thus obtained between these parts.
The closing and sealing of the open end of the casing 10, when the body of the capacitor 15 with its gasket 24 and its connection member 25 is housed therein, are effected by inserting the member 35 and keeping them permanently. elements clamped against each other by a compressive force of determined value to establish the bending of the cover 36, as well as the bending of the elastic teeth 42 of the elastic washer 41 towards the connection member 30.
To facilitate this introduction, the housing 10 is flared at its open end, as seen at 50. After the member 35 is pushed beyond the flared section 50, the compression force of determined value, and while the elements of the capacitor assembly housed in the housing 10 are clamped against each other and maintained under this compressive force, the end of the housing is crimped internally, as seen at 52 in fig. 4.
The application of the finished force to the elements shown in FIG. 2 determines the penetration of portions of the edge 22 of the electrode 16 into the openings 26 and 2 & of the member 25, as well as the penetration into the gap 43 of portions of the edge 23 of the electrode 17 through the openings 31 of organ 30.
In addition, the sharp surfaces 27 and 32 of the openings 26 and 31 of the members 25 and 30, provide the assurance that substantially all of the impregnation product 53 is effectively removed on the protruding portions of the electrodes, thus ensuring contact. direct metal at several points between the or ganes 25 and 30 with the corresponding edges 22 and 23 of the electrodes 16 and 17 of the capacitor.
By virtue of this arrangement, the parts of the edges of the electrodes which do not protrude through the respective openings of the connection members are folded back at both ends of the body of the capacitor and come into contact with each other, so that a non-inductive winding of the electrodes of the capacitor is obtained.
It will be noted that the flange 52 folded back from the casing alone keeps the member 35 in place and permanently retains, under an established compression pressure, all the elements housed between the bottom 12 and the flange 52. The value of the pressure established compression is slightly modified when the determined pressure which had been applied is removed, which is due to the deformation of the elastic element 37 by the reaction force of the elastic washer 41 pushing the cover 36 against the rim 52.
The reaction force exerted by the split spring washer 41, when the elements of the capacitor are assembled, continuously maintains the members 25 and 30 in contact with the corresponding edges 22 and 23 of the electrodes of the capacitor, as well as the member 25 with the bottom 12 of the housing 10. This action ensures the permanent maintenance of each of the terminals 13 and 46 of the capacitor in direct electrical connection with the respective electrodes of the capacitor, even when there are dimensional changes due to it. to temperature variations and manufacturing tolerances.
The force exerted by the deformation of the cover 36 and by the bending of the elastic washer 41 also acts to strongly push the elastic element 37 against the retaining flange 52, ensuring a very effective closure opposing the penetration of the Moisture between the rubber element 37 and the retaining rim 52 of the housing 10. The slotted washer 41 fulfills the dual function of ensuring permanent electrical contact between the terminals connected to the external circuit and the electrodes of the capacitor, and also to exert a permanent closing pressure between the cover 36 and the housing 10 of the capacitor.
The determined value of the compressive force used for mounting the condenser must correlate with the characteristics and dimensions of the elements 36 and 41, so that this value determines the bending of the non-conductive cover 36 towards the connection member 30, and performs the deformation of the teeth 42 of the flexible washer 41 to flatten the protruding ends 54 of the edge 23 of the electrode in the form of a mushroom (FIG. 6).
As we have seen, the output terminal 46 is constituted by a simple ribbon-shaped conductor made of a conductive material, preferably copper. It has been found and verified during the tests that by using a single terminal with a large surface, in the form of a ribbon, a noticeable reduction in the effective resistance and inductance of the capacitor is ensured, which is a very important factor for use in ignition devices for high speed engines.
Thanks to the arrangement described, the total electrical resistance, as well as the inductance of the entire capacitor are reduced to a minimum, and the values of this minimum are maintained under the harshest operating conditions.
It should be particularly emphasized that, by virtue of the arrangement described, all electrical connections are continuously maintained and can be established without the use of trained manpower, special equipment, or time consuming operations which are currently required when using solder connections. Thus, the production cost of such a capacitor is significantly reduced and this capacitor can be manufactured by automatic mass production processes.
