Man erhält so weitgehend reine Iso-bzw.

Process for the production of polyene aldehydes
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 4- [2 ', 6', 6'-Tri methyl-cyclohexylidene] -2-methyl-buten-(2) -al (1) and of 4- [2 ', 6', 6'-trimethyl-cyclohexen (2 ') - ylidene] -2-methyl-buten- (2) -al.- (1), the iso-C14-aldehyde and retrodehydro-C -aldehyde.
The process is characterized in that the aldehyde of the formula R = CII-CHO, where R is the 2, 6, 6-trimethyl-cyclohexylidene or the 2, 6, 6-tri-methyl-cyclohexene (2) -ylidene radical means, aeetalized, a propenyl ether is added to the acetal obtained in the presence of an acidic agent and the adduct obtained is treated with acidic substances.
The starting material required 2, 6, 6 trimethyl-eyelohexylidene or. 2, 6, 6-Tri-methyl-eyelohexen- (2) -ylidene-acetaldehyde (isob or retrodehydro-C11-aldehyde) can be obtained as follows:
The sithoxyacetylenecarbinol obtained by condensation of ethoxyacetylene with 2,2,6-trimethyl-cyclohexanone- (1) or zw '', 6,6-trimethyl-cyclohexen- (2) -one- (1) is obtained partially hydrogenated at the triple bond in a manner known per se and treated with acid. The 2, 6, 6 trimethyl-cyclohexylidene-acetaldehyde obtained from trimethylcyclohexanone is a colorless oil with a bp12: 110¯C; nD = 1.496; U.
V. absorption maximum at 237-238 m, cc (in petroleum ether solution). The 2,6,6-trimethyl-cyclohexen- (2) -ylidene-acetaldehyde obtained from trimethyl cyclohexenone is a yellowish oil with a bp13: 115¯ C; n25 = 1.531; U.V. absorption maximum at 278 ma (in petroleum ether solution).
The first stage of the process according to the invention consists in the acetalization of the iso- or. Retrodehydro-C11-aldehyde to the 2, 6, 6-trimethyl-cyclohexylidene or 2, 6, 6-trimethyl-cyclohexen (2) -ylidene-acetaldehyde-acetal (iso- or retrodehydro-C11-acetal). It is acetalized, for example, by means of an orthoester in the presence of an acidic condensing agent such as boron trifluoride etherate, zinc chloride, ammonium nitrate, phosphorus acid, p tolnolsulfonic acid, etc. The orthoesters of lower aliphatic acids with lower aliphatic alcohols, preferably methyl or methyl orthoformate, are particularly suitable -butyl ester. The acetals obtained are colorless oils.
The iso-Cl1-acetals have no absorption maximum in the ultraviolet spectrum above 225 mu, whereas for the retrodehydro-C11-acetals one at 240 mu is characteristic. For further processing, a special cleaning of the acetals, e.g. B. by distillation, not neces sary.
In the second stage of the process, the iso or. Retrodehydro-Cll-acetal attached a propenyl ether in the presence of an acidic agent, with 4- [2 ', 6', 6'-Trimethvl- cyclohexylidene] or. 4- [2 ', 6', 6'-trimethyl-cyclohexen- (2 ') -ylidene] -2-methyl-butane-ether- (3) -acetal- (1) (iso- or retrodehydro-C14 ether-acetal ) arises. Suitable acidic agents are boron trifluoride ether, zinc chloride, titanium tetrachloride, aluminum trichloride, ferric chloride, tin tetrachloride, etc. The propenyl ether of the same alcohol with which the iso- or.
Re trodehydro-Cll-aldehyde was acetalized, e.g. B. methyl propenyl ether, ethyl propenyl ether or n-butyl propenyl ether. The reaction takes place best at as low a temperature as possible, which leads to undesired side reactions, such as polymerization and condensation of the iso- or. Retrodehydro-C14-actheracetals with propenylÏther, can avoid. The optimal reaction temperature is between 15 and 50 C., depending on the choice of the acidic agent, the eetal and the propenyl ether.
In the preferred embodiment, approximately molar amounts of iso or. Retrodehydro-Cl i-aeetal and propenyl ether act on each other at 20 to 40 C in the presence of zinc chloride. This gives largely pure iso- or. Retrode hydro-Cl4-ethereal in almost quantitative yield. They are colorless oils. In the ultraviolet spectrum, the iso-Cl4-ethereal acetals have no absorption maximum above 225 m, u, whereas for the retrodehydro-Cn-ether acetals such a maximum is characteristic at 235 mÁ. For further processing a special cleaning, e.g. B. by distillation, not required.
As a third stage of the process according to the invention, the iso- or. Retrodehydro Cl4 ether acetals treated with acidic substances. This treatment is carried out with advantage, e.g. B. by heating that the splitting off of the alcohol from position 2, 3 and the exposure of the aldehyde group take place at the same time. Water-soluble, organic or inorganic acids such as p toluenesulfonic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, oxalic acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or acidic, water-soluble salts such as zinc chloride and sodium bisulfate are advantageously used as acidic reacting substances.
During the reaction, oxygen is advantageously excluded and an antioxidant, e.g. B.
IIydroehinone, added. One works two-way under conditions in which the alcohol formed is continuously removed from the reaction mixture. A water-miscible solvent, such as, for example, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, etc., can be added to the reaction mixture in order to obtain a homogeneous reaction mixture. Preferably, the iso- or. Retrodehydro-Cl4-ethereal with dilute phosphoric acid in the presence of a water-miscible solvent or with acetic acid with the addition of an alkali acetate and a little water to about 100 ° C. When the reaction mixture is diluted with water, the oily iso- or.
Retrodehydro-Cl4-aldehyde, which can be purified by distillation.
To avoid substance losses through polymerization and decomposition, it is advisable to avoid temperatures above 120 ° C. during the entire process and, in particular, to avoid intermediate products, namely iso or. Retrodehydro-C11-aceta, and Isobzw. Retrodehydro-C14-Ïtheracetal, for further processing undistilled.
The iso-CI4-aldehyde obtained by the present process boils at 82 ° C / 0.05 mm.
In the U.V. spectrum it shows an absorption maximum at 287 to 288 mA, E11: 1400 (in petroleum ether solution).
The retrodehydro-C14-aldehyde boils at 94 ° C./0.05 mm. In the U.V. spectrum it has an absorption maximum at 318 m, u, E1: 1670 (in petroleum ether solution).
Iso-Cl4-aldehyde and retrodehydro C14-aldehyde are valuable intermediate products for the synthesis of vitamin A or vitamin A2 and of ß-carotene or carotenoids. Furthermore, they can be used as fragrances with fixing properties and with an odor reminiscent of p-ions.
