Method for manufacturing a metallic bellows The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a double-layer metallic bellows, formed from two tubular metal blanks, which can be used by example as a seal between parts having relative rotary motion, in which the bellows acts as a partition wall and as a spring to hold a sealing part, for example a carbon disc, against a movable surface. Bellows of this type are used, for example, in pumps, instruments and other miscellaneous apparatus.
In such joints, the bellows is usually welded at one of its ends to a plate having a ground surface which bears against a carbon joint or the like.
Bellows of this kind known hitherto are ordinarily covered on the outside with a film of tin or other metal, deposited by electrolysis, constituting protection against corrosion. It has been found, however, that although the two layers of the completed bellows are very close to each other, it is possible during the cleaning operation, which is an essential part of the electrolytic deposition process, that the fluid of cleaning penetrates by capillarity between the two layers. The flux used to weld the end of the bellows to the plate can also penetrate between the layers; in either case, the substance thus introduced between the layers can produce intercrystalline corrosion of the brass or bronze.
Although such corrosion can take a long time to occur, it causes premature deterioration of the bellows.
The object of the invention is to provide a process for manufacturing a tubular metal bellows of the type described which tends to reduce the risk of premature deterioration due to the cause indicated above.
The method of the invention is characterized in that a thin coating of lead is deposited on at least one of the surfaces intended to come into contact with the two blanks, and in that the latter are then inserted into one. the other.
In one embodiment of the method, the dimensions of the metal tubular blanks relative to the thickness of the coatings applied thereon are preferably such that the externally coated inner blank appears to rub gently into the outer blank. top coated internally.
The method for depositing the coating may vary, but this coating may be obtained advantageously by a standard electroplating process. The lead film placed between the two layers acts as a lubricant during the formation of the corrugations in the blanks, thus making it possible to avoid excessive tensions during manufacture, which tensions could also lead to premature deterioration of the bellows.
Only one or the other of the surfaces intended to come into contact with the two blanks can be covered in the manner indicated, before the insertion of the blanks into one another, or these two surfaces can be covered. Each blank may have a closed end.
The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, an implementation of the method which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of an outer tubular blank after application of the re-garment, through a plane containing the axis of the blank.
The fi-. 2 is a similar sectional view of an internal tubular blank.
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view showing the two blanks assembled before the formation of the bellows.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the bellows obtained from the assembly according to FIG. 3, by a plane containing the axis of the bellows.
The fi-. 5 is a sectional view of an assembly comprising the bellows according to FIG. 4. The outer tubular blank shown in FIG. 1 comprises an outer wall A, made of brass for example and formed by a known method, the thickness of which is between 0.25 and 0.38 mm, on the inner surface of which has been applied, by electrolytic deposition, firstly a thin layer of tin, not shown in the drawing and whose thickness is of the order of 0.0005 to 0.0008 mm, then a coating of lead B with a thickness of the gold of 0.013 mm, for example.
Likewise, the internal tubular blank shown in FIG. 2 comprises a wall C, for example of brass and formed by a known method, with a thickness of 0.25 to 0.38 mm, the outer surface of which has been coated first with a layer of tin not visible in drawing, the thickness of which is between 0.0005 and 0.0008 mm, then a lead coating D with a thickness of 0.013 mm, for example.
The length of each tubular blank A and C is approximately 38 cm, the outside diameter of the external blank A being, for example, approximately 41 mm, while the outside diameter of the internal blank C is such that after the application of the B and D coatings on the blanks, the internal blank C joins together with gentle friction in the external blank.
After coating the internal and external blanks with lead, as described above, the internal blank C is forced into the external blank A so as to form the assembly shown in FIG. 3.
The thicknesses of the blanks and coatings have been exaggerated in figs. 1 to 3 to make the drawing clearer.
After assembling the two tubular blanks one inside the other (fig. 3), these blanks are formed by a known process not described here, so as to produce the bellows E shown in FIG. 4.
According to current practice, this bellows has on the outside a film of tin or of another metal, deposited by electrolysis and intended to protect the bellows from corrosion during use. During the cleaning operation with a fluid, which forms the essential part of the electrolytic deposition process of such a film, the double layer B, D of lead placed between the two tubular blanks A and C prevents the entry of this fluid into the space between the blanks.
The bellows shown is connected in the known manner by soldering in F and G to extreme plates FI and GI, and the presence of the double layer of lead B, D between tubes A and C also prevent the entry of the flux used between the tubes during the soldering operation.
The assembly shown in FIG. 5 comprises a pump cover H which supports a shaft HI carrying a pump rotor H2. A fluid-tight seal is formed between this rotor and the cover by the bellows E and the end plates FI and GI, the plate FI being mounted with hard friction in a housing M of the H, tarpaulin while the GI plate presses on a carbon J ring fixed in a JI housing which is mounted with hard friction in a recess of the rotor M.
In the bellows shown in FIG. 4, the final overall diameter of the bellows may be about 63.5 mm, while the inner diameter is about 41 mm, i.e. very substantially equal to the original outer diameter of the bellows. Outer tubular blank A. The bellows may include, for example, 16 full turns.
