Arrangement for drilling holes in solid bodies If a solid body is bombarded with electrons, the kinetic energy of the electrons in the body is converted into heat; the temperature of the solid rises. If the electron bombardment is concentrated on a very small area, very strong local excess temperatures can be achieved and the solid body in the bombardment area momentarily melts and evaporates while the other parts of the body remain solid. Material processing with electron beams is based on this principle.
If you want to drill holes in a solid in this way, the cross-section of the electron beam must have the same shape as the desired hole cross-section. The inven tion to the invention arrangement for drilling holes is therefore characterized by an electron gun and a drilling mask arranged in front of the drillings made of high-melting material with a cutout whose cross-section corresponds to the drilling to be generated to generate an electron beam from this cross-section. This mask is preferably placed in the focus of an electron beam, whereby an intense beam with the desired cross-section strikes the cuttings and creates the desired hole there through the removal process.
The mask is preferably fastened in a water-cooled copper mask carrier, preferably brazed. It is advisable to use an intermediate mask, also made of high-melting material, to protect the mask against direct vaporization by the material vaporized during drilling. This intermediate mask receives such a hole that it is not hit by the electrons. This intermediate mask is expediently arranged in such a way that it can be pushed back and forth, with the vapor deposition layer being scraped off on its side facing the cuttings each time through a suitable arrangement.
This back and forth pushing can be used to open and block the electron beam, with the cuttings changed during the blocking period and drilled during the opening period. This process can of course be automated.
In Fig. 1, the basic representation of this drilling arrangement is shown. 1 is the Bohr good, 2 the mask in the mask carrier, 3 the intermediate mask and 4 the electron beam.
Since very intense electron beams are required for the drilling process, it may seem appropriate to arrange the mask in the focus of an electron gun, as described in patent No. 309700 and shown in Fig. 2, and the one with ion separation and bolt cathode - (indirect heated pure metal cathode). This is because it offers high amperage, the possibility of relocating the fuel plug at a sufficiently large distance from the cathode and avoiding destruction of the cathode by positive ions.
The last point is particularly important because the mask 7 - (Fig. 2) itself comes to high temperatures and can emit through positive ions and considerable amounts of gas are released by the drilling process, which worsen the vacuum ver and thus the generation of positive Favor ions through the electron beam. In the exemplary embodiment shown schematically in FIG. 2, 1 denotes the bolt cathode, 2 the focusing electrode, the anode, 4 the fan-shaped equipotential lines, 5 the electron beam,
6 the positive ion paths, 7 the drilling mask, 8 the intermediate mask, 9 the drilling material.
Of course, instead of the electron gun mentioned, another one can be used that delivers a sufficiently intense electron beam.
If the work piece (drilling material) is arranged to be displaceable transversely to the electron beam, a slot could of course be milled in place of the bore or the work pieces can be sawn up in this way.
When drilling red ruby stones z. B. for watches, the treatment during drilling can be carried out in such a way that a white zone is created around the drilling zone by dechroming, which practically corresponds to a white pure corundum crystal.
Since pure corundum crystals are known to have more favorable properties when such stones are used as bearings in watch, counter and other measuring instrument and small apparatus technology, the treatment mentioned is of particular importance for this application.
