Device for determining low gas pressures Devices for determining low gas pressures (10-2 to 10-7 Torr and below) are known which are based on the thermal pressure gradient associated with a temperature gradient in a vacuum. Since it is difficult to measure small pressures by immediately counting the gas molecules per volume unit, one measures other, more easily traceable physical quantities associated with them, such as
B. the kinetic energy thermally supplied to the molecules, so that in the vacuum - if the free path length of the gas molecules is equal to or greater than the dimensions of the apparatus - a molecular pressure gradient from the warmer to the colder places is formed, whereby a sensing element becomes measurable linear or rotary movement can be offset.
The measuring devices for small pressures based on this principle, known as the radiometer effect of the first kind, have the advantage over other pressure measuring devices, for example over the common ionization manometers, that the forces at pressures below 10-2 Torr are proportional to the prevailing gas pressure , and simply depend on the root of the temperature ratio and not on the type of gas. You thus measure the total pressure of gases and vapors.
On the other hand, however, the small vibrations that cannot be completely avoided each time the device is installed, removed or transported can exert forces on the sensing element and in particular on its suspension that go far beyond what is tolerable. Thus, the tension of the suspension wire and its restoring force can easily be changed in an uncontrollable manner, so that the device for pressure measurement is unusable.
No matter how great the advantages of direct mechanical measurement of the thermal pressure gradient may be in principle, the properties of the sensing organ and its suspension, as described above, appeared to be great obstacles to use outside of scientific laboratories, i.e. in technology to stand against.
A surprisingly advantageous solution to this difficult problem that exists in mechanically acting measuring systems for the thermal pressure gradient is the subject of the present invention. The device according to the invention is characterized by a measuring system arranged within a vacuum-tight closed housing and connected to a vessel with a hot surface and a cold surface in operation and a sensor element arranged in between and movable in the operating state to record the thermal pressure gradient,
which organ is provided with an automatic locking device for shock-free and vibration-free locking of the sensing element when the device is not in use and with a display and a damping device.
Only at the beginning of a measuring period is the sensing element released by this locking device, which automatically holds the sensing element in place again after the measurement has ended. On the other hand, to prevent the after release of the sensing member by minor shocks, vibrations of the device or vibrations caused by the measuring forces be known before devices for vibration and motion damping.
The locking device can be implemented in a variety of ways. First there are magnetically or electrically operated locking devices that release the sensing element of the device through coupling with the working current of a vacuum pump at the beginning of the evacuation and thus make it ready for measurement. However, a device with bimetallic strips described below is far simpler and more expedient.
When dimensioning the bimetal strips, the usual daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations that occur independently of the measurement can be taken into account in order to prevent the latter from making a significant change in the normal position of the bimetal strips required for secure locking of the sensing element thus neither a relief of the lock during use nor an inhibition of the sensing element during the measurement occurs.
The heating or cooling devices for one or the other of the surfaces of the measuring system to be kept at different temperatures should preferably allow a temperature difference of 50-200 ° C. to be produced. Since - as mentioned above - the size of the thermal pressure gradient depends in a simple manner on the ratio of the two surface temperatures, it is advisable to set up the device in such a way that at least two measurement ranges result.
For pressures of around 10-2 to 10--1 Torr, for example, a temperature difference of 100 C is chosen to be maintained during the measurement, for even smaller pressures a temperature difference of 200 C.
In the range below 10-2 Torr, the measurement is based on the first type of radiometer effect, according to which the thermal pressure gradient is proportional to the prevailing gas pressure. At pressures above 10-2 Torr, however, there is a reverse effect, the so-called radiometer effect of the second kind. There is then a deflection of the sensing element, which is inversely proportional to the gas pressure. You can now use the device in both measuring areas if you arrange an indicator that shows which pressure area you are in.
The accompanying drawing shows an example of the device according to the invention and several variants of a detail.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of this Ausfüh approximately form, with auxiliary devices are let Wegge; Fig. 2 is a side view, in perspective, main parts partially broken away, and Fig. 3 to 7 illustrate some examples of locking devices.
The embodiment shown consists of one according to FIG. Housing 1 made of glass. It sits by means of a Sehliff connection with its lower end 22 on a connection line to a vessel. The upper end of the housing is closed ver by a Glasehliff 23. A wire (not shown) is melted down to divert static charges from the glass housing.
If the housing were made of metal for greater operational reliability, dia- magnetic or at most para-magnetic metals, such as non-ferrous metals, would be used so that the magnetic aids required to compensate for the deflection and dampening do not generate any torque and thus prevent a magnetic short circuit the housing wall occurs. A degassing device, for example in the form of a raised induction coil, which has to be heated to 200-400 ° C., is expedient.
The Ge housing wall 1 made of glass forms the outer, cylindrically symmetrical, cooled surface of the measuring system, which is shown in Fig. 2 on a larger scale. At the level of the measuring system, a cooling jacket 16 with inflow and outflow connections 1fia and 16b for a coolant circulation, for example a circulation of water or liquid air, is pushed over. Devices for precise temperature control and regulation can be advantageous.
Furthermore, on the outside of the housing at the level of the measuring system, there is a device for damping the free movements of the sensing element. This device consists of a permanent magnet made of iron to excite eddy currents in the moving sensing element. two poles 15.
The other parts of the measuring system are arranged and secured within a U-shaped frame 2 made of copper or a diamagnetic metal on the other, in order to increase operational reliability. The main parts of the measuring system shown in Fig. 2 comprise a Heizvorrich device, which consists of a rod 3 made of glass or ceramic with a vacuum-tight enclosed tube 8. In order to achieve an equal temperature, a cylinder 9 made of metal, glass or ceramic is pushed over. The glass tube 8 could, if the (-lehäus 1 is made of glass, be blown in from below or from the side. In the embodiment shown, it is through one of the two strong, z.
B. made of iron be provided power supply electrodes 7cr and 7b attached to the frame 2 against vibration. The power supplies 7cc and 7b are vacuum-tight from the glass tube 8 and from the. Housing 1 led out. The heating device is equipped with a device for temperature determination or control. The glass tube 8 has an extension in the form of a capillary 14 and is filled with oil, the height of which in the capillary forms a measure of the temperature.
The oil filling also ensures an improved heat transfer from the heating coil 7 to the surface 9. If other temperature determination devices are used, the tube 8 could also be filled with quartz sand, which takes on the task of heat transfer.
Between the inner cylindrical surface 9 and the outer glass wall 1 there is a cylindrically symmetrical sensor element 4 for measuring the thermal pressure gradient. Small distances between these rotationally symmetrical surfaces increase the sensitivity. The sensing element 4 consists of a hollow cylinder made of a light material, preferably made of aluminum, with blades or baffles 4a formed by slitting the cylinder jacket and bent out of the jacket surface at an angle less than 45. The cohesion is ensured by narrow, unchanged ring zones 4b at both cylinder ends.
The thermal pressure gradient acting from the inside to the outside transmits a torque to these turbine surfaces 4a, the amount of which is proportional to the total area of the blades. The length of the cylindrical turbine is a multiple of its radius. This shape has the significant advantage that the torque remains the same when the turbine cylinder is rotated. An aluminum foil of 20 ,, c thickness has proven itself as a material for the turbine, since aluminum is resistant to most gases and vapors by virtue of its own oxide layer. But you could also use copper and precious metals or other metals and other specifically light materials such as mica and plastic.
To prevent oxidation and amalgam formation with mercury, which, according to experience, is also exposed to aluminum, the turbine can be seen with a protective layer made of shellac, for example, or with vapor-deposited layers of oxides and sulfides. Such a measure is particularly recommended when using copper as the material for the turbine. The inner aluminum cylinder 9 around the heating tube 8 is expediently protected by a layer, for example made of shellac.
When selecting the material, it must also be taken into account that non-magnetic material is used or that an existing paramagnetic residual magnetism is compensated by means of a diamagnetic material. Suitable diamagnetic materials are in addition to aluminum, copper and silver.
The length of the turbine 4 is limited by the fact that a larger mass increases the vibration sensitivity and the natural oscillation period of the turbine and requires a stronger suspension, which reduces the response sensitivity and the accuracy of the measurement. Finally, a construction that is as light as possible also has the advantage of lower thermal inertia.
The turbine 4 serving as a sensing element could be freely suspended on a torsion thread in a manner known per se. In the embodiment shown, it is carried by means of a tension band suspension between two tungsten threads 11 and 11a, whereby the sensitivity to vibrations against impacts acting in the axial direction is still reduced. Quartz threads or bronze threads could also be used. The thickness of these threads should then be less than 50 ic, preferably less than 25, u. be.
With wire thicknesses of little more than 1, u. the measuring range could be extended up to 10-8 Torr because. then the restoring force of the thread is very low and even the smallest thermal molecular pressures could still cause a well measurable twist of the turbine from its normal position. Quartz threads with a thickness of about 10, u. would have the advantage that you could reproduce the zero position very well with them. Above the turbine is.
on the strap a display mirror 5 be fastened (see Figure 1). A bimetallic strip 24 is used as an indicator for the measuring range, which is fastened at one end to the heated surface 9 and at its other end has a small mirror 25 and thus enables an optical display. The deflection of a light beam reflected by this mirror, caused by the size or smaller heat dissipation, can be used to roughly determine whether the pressure measurement range is below or above 10-2 Torr.
The tension band 11 located above the turbine is attached to the frame 2 in such a way that adjustment is possible. For this purpose, the band 11 is attached to a leaf spring 18 by means of a lockable screw 19 so that it can be displaced horizontally in all directions. Furthermore, an adjusting screw 20 arranged on the frame is used to move the leaf spring 18 in the axis direction. The lower band 11a is rigid in one. Copper capillary 17 of the frame 2 squeezed. The turbine is connected to the tensioning strap by means of two short-circuit clips 6a offset by time 90.
and 6b, for example made of copper wire, which are connected to the tensioning straps 11 and 11a, for example by means of silver chloride. The suspension described also prevents a rotation of the turbine-like sensing element 4 by more than 180, which would occur, for example, in the event of a surprising ingress of air and would have detrimental consequences for the suspension and sensitivity to ivless.
The copper brackets 6a and 6b could be designed as short-circuit rings for electromagnetic damping or, in the case of a compensation measurement, for generating an electro-dynamic restoring force acting on the turbine. The damping takes place by eddy currents in the turbine, which are generated by the action of the magnetic force flow of the magnet 15. A small distance between the two magnetic poles and good shielding to reduce the magnetic scattering promote good damping. With such a damping by eddy currents, an electro-dynamic compensation of the measurement deflections cannot be carried out.
There are various options for the shock and vibration-free locking of the sensing element. In the described embodiment according to Fig.l and 2, a bimetal strip 10 is soldered to the internally heated aluminum cylinder 9 at two opposite points so that when not in use the bimetal strips are spread and pressed against the inner surface of the upper end ring 4 of the turbine will. The bimetallic strips are put together in such a way that they bend inward when heated, release the turbine and apply against the inner aluminum cylinder 9.
The metal with greater thermal expansion must therefore form the outer layer of the bimetal strips. In the variant of FIGS. 3a and 3b, the bimetallic strips 101 are composed in such a way that the longer, with its upper end on the cylinder 9 is soldered part of the strip, the metal of greater thermal expansion on the outside, but the shorter, free end 12 is on the inside, so that In the cold state, the bending curve of the bi-metal strip has a turning point in the vicinity of the junction between the two sections.
The contact of the bimetallic strip with the inner surface of the turbine then takes place on a larger surface of the lower end ring of the same and ensures better locking as a result of a more even distribution of force.
In the variant according to FIGS. 4a and 4b, four bimetallic strips 102 are attached in such a way that they are spread in pairs both upwards and downwards in the cold state, so that the hollow body of the turbine is locked at both ends.
In the variant according to FIGS. 5a and 5b, four bimetallic strips 103 do not stretch in the axial direction, but horizontally perpendicular to the axis of the measuring system, so that in the cold state they are continuously and approximately with the curvature of a cylinder section on the inner surface of the ends 4 and 4b of the turbine are on.
In the variant according to FIGS. 6a and 6b, four bimetallic strips 104 are not fastened with one of their ends to the cylinder 9, but in their center, so that the structure remains symmetrical both in the cold and in the warm condition and through the bimetal streak, no force is transmitted to the turbine suspension system.
Finally, in the variant according to FIG. 7a. and 7b the locking of the turbine 4 both by means of bimetallic strips 105 attached to the cold or cooled surface 1 both inside the heated surface 9 and outside the turbine, which act in the same way. In these figures, the device provided for specifying the pressure area is shown, which, as in the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2, consists of a bimetallic strip 24 connected to the heated surface. By means of the small mirror 25 at the end of the bi metal strip, a light pointer can be deflected.
The ends of the bimetal strips are attached to the heated or cooled surfaces in a manner known per se, for example by spot welding. The bimetallic strips necessary for locking are measured so that after switching on the heating current for the heating coil 7, the turbine is released after 2 to 5 minutes. The automatic locking of the turbine when it is switched off or in the event of an unforeseen heating failure increases the operational safety of the device.
The bimetals can consist of the known combinations, for example Invar, copper, nickel and nickel-iron alloys. They can be protected against oxidation and against mercury vapors by coatings, for example, from heat-resistant lacquers or oxide films. The described automatic locks allow a very simple and reliable handling of the device and have so far proven to be very effective. They allow the described device to be used to determine low gas pressures on a larger technical scale and by less trained personnel.
The power requirement of the facility is very low; a current of 1.2-1.5 amps at 2 volts is sufficient.
The measured pressures are displayed either in a known manner by means of a light pointer or by compensating for the deflection of the turbine by means of a rotating electromagnetic alternating field or by means of an optical tracking device. Such a follow-up device consists of one (or two) photocells, which are always precisely set to the light mark by means of a motor controlled according to the incidence of light. With the appropriate technical equipment, such a device is able to either deliver a remote display or to operate large display instruments.
The device is calibrated, for example, by means of a Mc. Leod manometer. Since the calibration curve is linear, it can be extrapolated to the 1V-Lull pressure. By producing various fixed temperature differences between the two surfaces, several measuring ranges can be recorded with good accuracy.
