Process for the pretreatment of semifinished products made of metallic materials intended for deformation It is known to first anneal the wires to be treated before each drawing process when drawing wires, then to pickle and lime them. The number of drawing operations required in each case depends on the predetermined wire size of the finished product. Since the wires now have to be annealed repeatedly in the interstices in order to give them the predetermined final cross-section by deforming them in the final treatment, oxidation always occurs again on the wire surface.
The wire is therefore limed again after each intermediate annealing or provided with a lead layer in order to give the surface sufficient adhesion for the lubricant. When using lead, it is necessary to pickle the wire after each drawing process.
It is already known to simplify this previously generally used method by simply changing the scale layer on hot-rolled material and making it capable of absorbing lubricants without the use of lime or lead. This is done by, for example, placing the hot-rolled wires with their rolled scale layer in a salt bath, the temperature of which is between 300 and 6 (10 C. The effect of the salt bath on the scale layer closes the latter a fine-grain cover layer, which makes it possible to pull the wire using lubricants.
After the last drawing process, the metal is treated with acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, so that the surface of the wire appears bright.
The salt bath proposed for this purpose contains caustic potash, caustic soda or a mixture of these alkalis with one another or with their carbonates and also 1 to 2.0; %. an active oxidizing agent. When practicing this known method, it was found that the wires treated in this way can withstand a certain cold deformation, but that after a relatively low overall degree of deformation, annealing must take place again in order to impart further deformability to the material. The individual deductions must not be too large.
The present invention relates to a method for the pretreatment of semifinished products made of metallic materials intended for deformation using a molten bath, characterized in that the material with a bare surface is subjected to the molten bath treatment until a surface layer suitable as a lubricant carrier is formed. As a result, a material that has been freed from the mill scale or annealing scale and intended for deformation can be put into a state that is particularly favorable for cold deformation, preferably for drawing. In this way, semi-finished products of any kind made from metallic materials, in particular from Hoehlegzertem iron and steel, can be treated.
The molten bath treatment makes it possible to change the surface of the goods, that is to say to produce a layer on the surface which, when the goods are subsequently deformed, has proven its worth as a particularly advantageous carrier of the sealant.
The molten bath expediently consists of alkali hydroxides and possibly alkali carbonates with additions of oxidizing agents from the group of chlorates, peroxides, nitrates, biehromatics, longanates and permanganates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals. However, the bathroom composition can also be chosen differently.
It has been found that a molten bath consisting of sodium or potassium hydroxide or a mixture of these, which nitrates, peroxides or manganates from the group of alkali metals are advantageously mixed in, is particularly suitable for carrying out the process. Sometimes it is also useful to add lime to these substances or mixtures of substances in amounts between 1 and 30%.
The temperature of the weld pool depends on the respective composition of the same and the material to be treated. The treatment time depends on the speed with which the surface vision is created. The individual process steps consist of treating the material with a bare surface in the enamel bath, then removing adhering substances after the desired surface layer has been created, drying it and then coating it with a protective agent, preferably soapy water.
The good is then ready to be drawn. It has been found that a good prepared in this way. can be deformed to a much greater extent than was previously possible before it is necessary to undertake an intermediate annealing. In addition, the individual degrees of deformation or deductions can be made significantly larger, so that the number of them can be significantly reduced. It is possible, under favorable conditions, to achieve a total degree of deformation of 96 / a and possibly even more before intermediate annealing is necessary.
In addition, it turns out to be a further advantage that the deformation speed can be increased considerably, and that, for example, the wear on the drawing nozzles can be considerably reduced compared to previously known drawing processes: Furthermore, the product produced is characterized by a particularly smooth and good surface Dimensional accuracy from; the surface quality is thus improved. When drawing fine wires, a particular advantage is that the wires can be drawn in drawing dies from the known hard metals up to very thin dimensions, which was previously only possible in diamond drawing dies.
Deformation can be done by any process that changes the cross-section or shape, such as drawing, rolling, pressing, deep-drawing, extrusion, jamming and pressing. The method can be used on all metallic materials, but preferably on metals of the iron group (including nickel and cobalt) and their alloys with one another and with, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, titanium, niobium, aluminum, silicon and copper, Including stainless steels containing nickel and chromium and alloys of nickel with chromium which contain little or no iron, as well as alloys of nickel with copper,
Copper and copper alloys. Offers particular advantages. the process for materials that are not superficially treated by wet sea chemicals. or difficult to convert.
The influence of the surface treatment on the deep-drawing ability can be determined by comparative tests with the so-called cell-drawing test. A washer with a diameter of 70 mm is measured with the pulling force. drawn into a cup of 35 mm diameter, whereby it is determined at what height of the cup a crack occurs. In the case of material that is particularly easy to deep-draw, it is possible, without intermediate annealing, to carry out a second draw, in which a diameter of up to 26 mm is drawn.
The tests have shown that cracks occur in all materials after the second pull. The higher the cup can be pulled during the second pull, the better the deep-drawability.
In the following table of figures, the heights are given in millimeters at which the crack is made with the second pull. A copper-nickel alloy with 33% copper and 67% nickel, also nickel,
then brass with 75% copper and finally a stainless steel with 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

Examples 1. Soft annealed wire made of stainless steel with 18% chromium and 8% nickel with a diameter of 1.5 mm was pickling the surface in a molten bath.
Consisting of 80% sodium hydroxide and 20% potassium dichromate, treated for 15 minutes at 520, whereby a surface layer suitable as a lubricant carrier was formed on the property.
The melt residues were washed out in hot water, the wire was dried thoroughly and immersed in a concentrated soap solution at about 20 ° C. for about 5 minutes and then dried thoroughly. The surface layer created by the molten bath treatment is now coated with a soapy water layer that adheres well and is suitable as a lubricant.
The drawing material prepared in this way was drawn in hard metal drawing dies in 13 individual draws with a degree of drawdown decreasing from 44 to 20% up to a diameter of 0.20 mm, without intermediate annealing and without exhausting the deformability.
2. Soft-annealed wire made from a chromium-nickel-iron alloy with 20% chromium, 30% nickel, the remainder iron, was treated in the same way as indicated in example 1 . In 8 pulls, the wire at a speed of 3 m / sec. drawn from 1.50 mm to 0.3 mm in diameter.
The individual deductions were between 52 and 23 0/0. When the total deformation was 96%, the drawing was stopped without the deformability being exhausted. A drawing die wear could not be determined. The one with 14 percent sulfuric acid from the draw layer. freed wire had a bare and very smooth surface.

consisting of 801 / o sodium hydroxide and 20% sodium nitrate treated at 500 C for 20 minutes, whereby a surface layer suitable as a lubricant carrier was again formed on the property.
After washing out adhering substances and drying, this was removed again by soapy. a layer of lubricant and then, after drying again, the material was drawn in hard metal drawing dies in 9 pulls with a degree of pulling down from 46 to 28% up to a diameter of 0.3 mm.
In this case, too, the deformability was not exhausted after a total degree of deformation of 96%. The wire could have been drawn to thinner dimensions without intermediate annealing.
