Method for producing a waterproof sandpaper and sandpaper produced by this method The invention relates to a method for producing a waterproof sandpaper and to a sandpaper produced by this method.
Prior to the present invention, waterproof soft paper was manufactured by applying a number of coats of varnish to paper, particularly one containing a wet strength agent, in order to impart substantial water resistance to the same.
A typical process consisted of first impregnating wet-strength paper with a so-called treatment varnish in such a mass that the paper fibers were practically all impregnated with the varnish, then a pretreatment layer was applied to the side that was to be covered with the siren grains to apply, furthermore, on the reverse side of the sheet a layer which contained very fine clay material in order to reduce its smoothness, then a first adhesive layer to hold the grains of the clay material in place, on which then,
while it was still liquid, the grains of the abrasive were applied, after which another layer of adhesive was applied to anchor the grains even better on the base. Heat treatments were carried out at a suitable moment to harden the adhesive layers. The product obtained in this way has various disadvantages and the process for its production is relatively expensive, since many coatings have to be applied and heat-treated. The paper is somewhat brittle in a normal atmosphere and is only suitable for use when it is immersed in water.
However, this also causes the paper fibers to swell, which causes a tendency to roll, which can be so great that a small sheet of paper curls up into a tube.
According to the present invention, the method for the production of waterproof soft paper is characterized in that a paper sheet is produced in which the cellulose fibers are glued together to a substantial extent by an elastomer and its elongation at break in the dry state after conditioning in air at 230 ° C </B> and <B> 50% </B> relative humidity is not lower than 4%, this sheet with a first layer of an adhesive,
then coated with a layer of a granular abrasive and then with a second layer of adhesive and solidified the adhesive. When producing the new paper, the first adhesive layer can be applied directly to the paper, followed by the abrasive grains and the second adhesive layer. This means that the three usual pretreatments can be avoided, which means substantial savings in production costs.
In addition, the new product is relatively flexible when dry, and the backing material is strong and tough enough to withstand multiple flexing, in contrast to earlier products, which brown easily.
The following example explains the manufacture of a product whose base is relatively flexible and tough when dry. <I>Example<B>1</B> </I> <I> Production of the carrier </I> First, according to the usual procedure with relatively long fibers, a strong run on a foudrination machine under an absorbent paper sheet here. 05 kg </B> of a granular coating stuck. The paper treated in this way was dried for 3/4 hours at 79.51 C, after which a second adhesive layer was rolled over the abrasive. The second layer of adhesive was <B> 1.72 kg </B> per ream, whereupon the product was heated again for <B> 1 </B> hour to <B> 79.50 C </B> and then gradually one hour brought it to <B> 1070 </B>, at which temperature it was held for a further <B> 6 </B> hours. Finally it was further hardened for <B> 10 </B> minutes at <B> 1500 </B> C.
This product was then rolled up, moistened to 6.5% of its weight, and cut into sheets of the usual size.
The material of the first adhesive layer was produced by mixing an oil varnish with a melamine-formaldehyde resin in accordance with USA Patent No. 2262728. 20 parts of melamine-formaldehyde resin were mixed with 80 parts len of an oil varnish, of which <B> 182 </B> liters contain 45 <B> kg </B> resin. The <B> oil </B> was fiber bark wood <B> oil </B> and the resin was a hard @ soluble phenolic resin. The mixture was diluted with solvents and thinners to a content of <B> t3 </B> <B> <B> 50% </B> solids.
The material of the second adhesive layer was of the same composition as that of the first layer, but diluted to 40% solids content.
The product had very satisfactory grinding power and durability. The relatively moderate toughness and flexibility of the product results from the MIT fold test, in which it withstood folds in the longitudinal direction 425 and in the transverse direction 464, compared to <B> 18 </B> and <B> 76 </ B > a similar product manufactured according to the previous methods using the same binders.
<I> Example 2 </I> A product with a strong abrasive effect, which is usually soaked with water in order to give it increased flexibility and toughness, was produced as follows: It was prepared as in Example <B> 1 </ B > produced a paper, but with the difference that the paper had the following physical properties before impregnation:

The first adhesive layer had the same composition as that of Example 1, but the second adhesive layer was a liquid, thermosetting of the phenol-formaldehyde # 7d conditioning product obtained by reacting one (- the majority of technical phenol, which consisted of about <B> 90116 </B> phenol and <B> 10% </B> cranic acids, with 1.2 parts by weight <B> 37 '</ B > nigem Formaldelivd,
by heating the material for about 1/2 hour in Gregenwart from about 5-7% Ba (01-1) 2.8H # O and <B> 10 </B> Cew.% propylene glycol on the backflow. The product was then concentrated to a solids content of about 80% and a viscosity of about 10,000 centipoise at 2511 C.
This product was diluted with Furf Lirol to a viscosity of <B> 50 </B> Centipoise at 43.20 <B> C, at which temperature it was applied, and based on 0.3% on the resin content, sorbitan monolaureate added.
The product obtained had a high level of grip and was also satisfactory when dry (1 flexible, although the MIT fold sample was somewhat less than in example 1., namely <B> 263 </B> in lengthwise and <B> 170 </B> in crosswise direction. Instead of using a pre-formed sheet of paper * as described in examples <B> 1 </B> and 2, saturates with an elastomer,
you can also add a synthetic elastomer and a svntlietiselies resin to the pulp to be processed by known methods. An example of this is the following: <I> Example<B>3</B> </I> <B> 62 </B> Czew was added to a paper pulp containing about 1.5% bleached Kraft paper fibers. '/ o the fibers of the same copolymer of butadiene and aeronitrile as in the previous examples.
The elastomer was added in the form of a 37 / # 'emulsion containing solids to the paper pulp circulating in a blow molding device. After three circulations, based on the fiber weight, <B> 6.2 </B>% by weight of a phenol-formaldehyde condensation product in the form of a 365% dispersion in water was added. This addition was made in the course of a further four cycles.
The elastomer and resin were then precipitated by adding alum solution to the mixture still in circulation. The alum was added in the form of a solution in warm water and amounted to 7% by weight of the paper fibers. The mass was left to mix for a further two minutes and then shaped into paper in the usual way on the Foudrinier machine.
Abrasive paper was produced from this material by coating it with an adhesive and abrasive grains, as described in Example <B> 1 </B>. It had a high sliding effect and good flexibility. <I> Example 4 </I> The procedure was as in example <B> 3, </B> but no resin was used in the production of the paper base.
<I>Example<B>5</B> </I> A paper produced according to Example <B> 3 </B> was coated on one side by rolling with a coating of an aqueous dispersion of with an elastomeric copolymer Polyvinyl chloride plasticized from acrylonitrile and butadiene is provided in such an amount that per ream (480 sheets <B> 61 </B> X <B> 81 </B> cm) <B> 2.7 kg </B> Solids were applied.
The dispersion contained 48% solids and the ratio between polyvinyl chloride and elastomeric plasticizer was 70:30. After drying, the paper was provided with a first layer of adhesive, followed by the soap granules and the second layer of adhesive as in Example 2 were applied.
<I>Example<B>.6</B> </I> A paper was produced as in example <B> 1, </B> with the difference that the impregnation was 54 parts Copolymer was a butadiene and 46 parts of styrene. This paper was coated with the two layers of adhesive and the soap granules, as in Example 1.
<I>Example<B>7</B> </I> A sandpaper was produced as in Example 2, with the difference that the saturant was a latex with <B> 32% </B> polychloroprene .
<I>Example<B>8</B> </I> A paper produced as in example 2 was put on one side with <B> 2.7 kg </B> solids per ream (480 sheets <B> 61 < / B> X <B> 81 </B> a) a mixture of <B> 100 </B> parts of a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, <B> 3 </B> parts of sulfur, <B> > 1 </B> part of tetramethyl-thiuramdisullide and <B> 10 </B> parts of water-soluble phenol-formaldehyde resin in A-stage coated as a pretreatment layer.
The mixture was an aqueous dispersion with a solids content of 40%. The parts given are parts by weight. After drying, the first and second adhesive layers and the sanding grains were applied as in Example 2. The adhesion of the first adhesive layer to the substrate was improved by the phenolic resin content of the pretreatment layer.
<I> Example<B>9</B> </I> You work as in example <B> 8, </B> but use a material according to example <B> 1, </B> for the first adhesive which was modified by adding <B> 10% </B> of its solids content of pulverized phenol-formaldehyde resin in the A state, which is soluble in the solvents of the first adhesive eye-forming agent. This improved the adhesion of the first adhesive layer to the base even more.
Instead of adding the elastomer, as described in example <B> 3 </B>, to the pulp in the hammer mechanism, then adding resin and precipitating it, you can first use a melamine-formaldehyde resin, such as that in US patent no 2345543, and then add an emulsion of an elastomer and form the paper from it. In the same way, other methods of adding elastomers to the pulp before sheet formation can also be used to produce the paper backing.
The examples describe the manufacture of products using certain specific synthetic elastomers to connect the fibers. In addition to these, other elastomers known to those skilled in the art can also be used, as well as mixtures of these.
Examples of such other elastomers are natural rubber, polyethylene, polymers and copolymers of vinyl, vinylidene and acrylic esters (which may be plasticized to make them sufficiently elastic) and polymers and other copolymers of diolefins such as polybutadiene, copolymers of Butadiene with methaeryl nitrile,
and polymers of the pentadienes and substituted pentadienes such as methylpentadienes. If the polymers and copolymers are not already sufficiently elastic, they can be plasticized by known methods. In general, it is found that all of these materials, provided they are sufficiently elastic, have satisfactory properties.
Some of the elastomers swell in the solvents used to make the first adhesive layer, and their behavior in this regard can be improved by subjecting them to crosslinking, such as vulcanization of rubber into soft caoutchouc or the use of vulcanized latex. In a similar manner, the solvent resistance of synthetic elastomers can also be improved in a manner known per se by means of a crosslinking agent such as a phenolic resin.
Products with very fine soap are often difficult to manufacture because very fine paper fibers poke through the coating on the drawn paper surface. In such cases it is sometimes desirable - as shown in Examples <B> 5 </B> and <B> 8 </B>, on this side of the paper a pretreatment layer made of elastomer or a mixture of elastomer with crosslinking or to apply vulcanizing agents or a flexible resin to cover these rows of fibers and attach the loose fibers to the sheet.
Such a pull is preferably imparted to the elastomer-containing paper. It can be subjected to a heat treatment to increase its resistance to the solvents of the first adhesive layer. This pretreatment layer can also preferably be applied when the solvents of the first adhesive layer do not easily wet the elastomer in the paper and the adhesion is correspondingly smaller.
In such cases, as described in example 8, a compatible resin can be mixed with the pretreatment mixture, which resin adheres to the first adhesive layer in order to improve the adhesion of the first adhesive layer to the paper. On the other hand, a compatible resin can also be added to the material of the first adhesive face, which resin adheres to the pre-exposure face, as described in example 9.
If the elastomer in the paper is not sufficiently solvent-resistant, the first adhesive layer can be applied as a dispersion in water or another solvent for the solids in this layer. It is known that dispersions penetrate less than solutions and therefore the constituents of the first layer of adhesive stick to the surface to which they are applied and do not penetrate as far as would solutions.
In such cases it is sometimes desirable to add a resin to the first adhesive layer, as was done in example 9, in order to increase the adhesion of the first adhesive sellielite to the substrate.
The type and size of the soap granules can vary, the weight of the first and second adhesive being changed accordingly, as is well known from the relevant technology.
In the same way, other types of pretreatment and adhesive layers can be used, such as oil-modified synthetic resin varnishes, in particular phenolic resin varnishes, for which examples can be found in British patent nos. <B> 267736, </B> <B> 293453,350896, 356188,400650,421107,457963 </B> and <B> 4.79820 </B>, as well as use different types of other elastomers than those described for the preparation of the base. e
