Fig. 3 zeigt die gleichen Teile im Grundriss.
Method and device for thermoforming a film made of thermoplastic material
The invention relates to a process for thermoforming a film made of thermoplastic material, for example cellulose acetate or acrylic, vinyl or polystyrene synthetic resin, in an open-topped hollow mold, in which the film is placed on the mold in a flat state in such a way that it closes the cavity airtight, it is heated until it softens by the thermal radiation of a heating plate located above the mold and the pressure in the mold cavity is reduced below atmospheric pressure so that it pushes the film into the mold.
According to the previously known methods of this type, exact parallelism of the plate surface and the film cannot be maintained when the film is heated, since the film is only supported at the edge of the mold and only remains flat as long as it is stiff.
This support is no longer effective at those points of the film that have become soft, so that the film sinks at these points and becomes wavy. As soon as such waves occur, however, the distance between the relevant points of the film and the film changes Plate, whereby the film is heated unevenly. With this method it is hardly possible to heat the film in such a way that it becomes as soft everywhere as would be necessary for perfect deformation.
These disadvantages are avoided according to the invention by the fact that during the irradiation of the film in. Mold cavity brings about an overpressure that is just sufficient to hold the softened film against its own weight parallel to the heating plate. Thanks to the parallelism of the film to the heating plate, it is much easier to achieve that the film is evenly soft and tension-free after it has been heated.
The invention further relates to a device for carrying out the method according to the invention, which is characterized by a hollow shape open at the top, a frame-shaped, flat support surface surrounding this shape for the film to be deformed, a press frame for pressing the film airtight onto this support surface, one with a heating device Plate provided with a flat radiation surface, means for holding this plate in such a position that its radiation surface is parallel to the aforementioned support surface at a distance above the mold, and means for generating positive and negative pressure in the mold cavity.
An exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown in the drawing. The method according to the invention is also explained below with reference to the drawing.
Fig. 1 shows schematically a device for thermoforming thermoplastic films with two work stations in elevation.
2 shows, on a larger scale, the parts of a work station of the device in longitudinal section, and
Fig. 3 shows the same parts in plan.
In a frame that is not shown in greater detail in the drawing, two horizontal, rectangular support plates 1 with a flat upper side are arranged on each of a support 2 that can be adjusted in height. Each of these plates carries a shaped body 3 with a right-angled plan, the underside of which has a flat depression 4 and is provided along its edge with a downwardly protruding rubber seal 5 embedded in a groove. The top of the molded body 3 has a recess 6 which is designed as a die for the film 7 to be deformed.
Around this upper recess 6 runs a frame-like flat surface 8 on which the originally flat film 7 comes to rest with its parts surrounding the part to be deformed and is pressed on by means of a metal frame 9. A large number of fine bores 10 in the molded body 3 connects its upper recess 6 with the lower recess 4 between the support plate 1 and the molded body 3, which is surrounded by the seal 4.
The frame 9 is provided with two coaxial pins 11, the common axis of which passes through the center of gravity of the frame and which are each supported in one of two levers 12. These two levers 12 are mounted so that they can be pivoted about a common axis on a rail 13 which is fastened to the support plate l, namely the pins 14, on each of which one of the levers 12 is mounted, sit on small blocks 15, which each have a ' Threaded bolt 16 and a nut 17 are screwed to the rail 13.
The threaded bolts 16 pass through the longitudinal slots of the rail 13, so that the blocks 1'5 and with them the levers 12 can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction of the rail 13 after lodening the nuts 17.
This allows the distance between the levers 12 to be changed in order to install one of greater or lesser width instead of the frame 9. At its free end, one lever 12 carries a transverse rod 18 serving as a handle, which goes through a pipe section 19 seated on the other lever 12, so that both levers 12 are held parallel to one another without impairing their mutual transverse displacement.
The crossbar LE carries a downwardly directed, with an opening 20 provided resilient tab 2.1.When the levers 12 are pivoted down so far that the frame 9 presses the film 7 firmly on the frame-forming surface 8, one snaps on the support plate 1 seated nose 22 into the opening 20 of the tab 21 and holds the lever 12 2 with the frame 9 in this position.
To facilitate the pivoting up of the lever 12 and the frame 9, a helical spring 23 serving as a torsion spring is pushed onto each of the two pins 14, one end of which is anchored to the respective pin 14 and at its opposite end engages the respective lever 12 and is thus pretensioned is that it tries to swing it upwards.
A pair of rails 24 is arranged above the two support plates 1, on which a rectangular radiator 26 with rollers 25 with built-in heating resistors is suspended so that it can be horizontally displaced in such a way that it can be manually pushed over one or the other support plate 1 and into a central position 36a in which it is neither above one nor the other support plate. This radiator 26 has a flat, smooth and uniformly blackened metallic underside. The heating resistors that it contains are designed and distributed in such a way that they allow all parts of the underside of the radiator to be brought to the same temperature as possible.
In particular, more and stronger resistances are arranged over the edge and corner parts of the underside of the radiator than over the middle parts in order to compensate for the heat losses through lateral radiation.
At a short distance from the underside of the radiator, a plate 27 made of a highly thermally conductive metal, for example copper or aluminum, is screwed on parallel to it; At the fastening points 28 it is separated from the radiator by a heat-insulating material so that as little heat as possible passes through conduction to the plate 27 and the latter is not heated more at the fastening points than on the rest of its surface, where the heat is only generated by radiation from the radiator 26 is transferred to the plate 27. In this plate, thermal conduction largely balances the temperatures, which is effective as far as the edge of the plate due to the small lateral radiation surface of the plate.
The heat radiated over by the radiator is thus radiated from the plate 2, 7 in a very uniform distribution downwards against the film.
The device further comprises an air pump 30 which is driven by a motor 31. The suction side of this air pump can be connected by means of a three-way valve 32 either through an inlet connection 33 with the atmosphere or with a vacuum container 34. A line 35 emanates from this and is connected to an opening 39 in each of the two support plates 1 via a branch line 36, a shut-off valve 37 and a flexible line 3S which does not hinder the displacement of the plate 1 when the adjustable support 2 is adjusted is and thus allowed to connect the recess 4 in the underside of the molded body 3 with the vacuum container 34.
The pressure side of the air pump 30 can be connected to the atmosphere by means of a second three-way valve 40 either with a pressure vessel 4'1 or with an outlet connection 42. A line 43 leads from the pressure vessel 41 to a pressure reducing valve 44. Its outlet side is connected via a branch line 45 containing a shut-off valve 46 and a flexible line 47 to a second opening 48 in each of the two support plates.
A pressure regulator 50 is also connected to each of the branch lines 45 behind the shut-off valve 46 via a check valve 49, which allows the pressure in the corresponding part of the branch line 45 and thus in those communicating with it through the opening 48 and the flexible line 47 Adjust wells 4 and 6 of the molded body in a range of, for example, 0.5 to 10 mm water column exactly.
The setup described works as follows:
First, the heating element 26, which is in its central position 26a, and the motor 31 are switched on. If necessary, the three-way cocks 32 and 40 are soon set so that the pump 30 sucks in air from the vacuum tank 34 and conveys it through the outlet port 42 to the outside, which creates an underpressure in the tank 34, soon so that it passes air from the outside sucks in the nozzle 33 and conveys it into the pressure vessel 41, that is to say generates an overpressure in it.
The film 8 to be deformed is placed on the one Fbrmkorper 3 and pressed airtight onto the flat surface 8 of the molded body 3 by pressing down the hand lever 12 by means of the frame 9. As soon as the heater 26 has reached the required temperature of, for example, 150 C and the necessary negative pressure is present in the negative pressure vessel 34 and the necessary overpressure is present in the pressure vessel 41, the heater 26 is pushed over the relevant molded body and the corresponding shut-off valve 46 is opened immediately. It then flows compressed air from the container 41 via the line 43, the pressure reducing valve 44, the corresponding.
Branch line 45, the flexible line 47 and the opening 48 in the recess 4 of the molded body underside and from there through the bores 10 of the molded body 3 in its upper recess'6 under the film 7. The pressure of the air in the line 45 also opens the check valve 49 and enters the pressure regulator 50. This allows so much air to escape from the line 45 to the outside that the pressure in this line does not exceed the value set on the pressure regulator 50. This should be dimensioned in such a way that, expressed in mm of water column, it is approximately equal to the product of the thickness of the film in mm and the specific weight of the film material, for example for a film of 2 mm.
Thickness with a specific weight of 1.25 et-via 2.5 mm water column. This pressure acting from below on the foil 7 keeps the latter even when it has become soft, against its own weight, even and parallel to the plate 27 and prevents it from bending downwards.
As soon as the desired pressure has been set, the shut-off valve 46 is closed again. The plate 27 is kept at a very uniform temperature over its entire surface by the radiator 2i6, since the heat conduction in the plate is valid in relation to the heat transfer through the radiation from the radiator to the plate and therefore there are hardly any local differences in this thermal radiation affect the temperature of the underside of the plate. Since the film is held parallel to the plate 27 by the air pressure, the heat transfer from the plate to the film is practically the same everywhere. This is thus heated and softened evenly.
When the film is heated, it can give off gases or vapors; In addition, the air in the molded body 3 expands as a result of the increase in its temperature. An increase in pressure of this air is prevented by the fact that part of it can escape into the open in the manner already described via the check valve 49 and the pressure regulator 50. Since the shut-off valve 46 is closed, it is impossible for the pressure to be influenced by the pressure vessel 41 and for vapors, which could condense in an undesired manner, to enter the lines 58 and 60 and the pressure vessel 41.
After the heating time required to soften the film has elapsed, the shut-off valve 37 is opened so that air can escape from the depressions 4 and 6 of the molded body through the opening 39 in the support plate 1 and the lines 38, 36 and 35 into the vacuum container 34. The pressure under the film 7 thus drops to below the atmospheric pressure that acts on its upper side.
The check valve 49 closes and prevents outside air from flowing into the cavities of the mold via the pressure regulator 50. The excess of the atmospheric pressure over the falling pressure in the mold now presses the soft film 7 into the depression 6 of the molded body, which serves as a die, so that it assumes its shape. The operator now pushes the heating element 26 back into its central position 26a. The deformed film 7, which from then on is no longer exposed to heating, cools down and solidifies.
After closing the shut-off valve 37 and lifting off the frame 9 by opening the lever 12, the deformed and solidified film 7 can be lifted off the molded body 3. If necessary, this can be blown clean by means of a blower nozzle, not shown in the drawing, connected to the pressure container 41.
The device is expediently operated in such a way that the closing of the shut-off valve 37, the cooling and removal of a deformed film and the placing and clamping of a still undeformed film in one of the two molded bodies 3 take place in the period during which the film stretched on the other molded body is heated by the heating element and is then subjected to the deformation triggered by opening the shut-off valve 37.
This valve 3fi7 can for example be opened automatically by electromagnetic means a certain time after the arrival of the heating device 26 over the film. In this way, the operator is busy with those operations that require his attention, while the other operations are carried out automatically on the other molded body.
In this mode of operation, the radiation plate 27 must be able to have the same temperature at all times, and it is also advisable, for rational work, to measure the heating time for the foils to be processed on the two moldings to be approximately the same, although foils for processing on one of the moldings can come, whose thickness, material and softening temperature are completely different from those of the foils to be processed on the other molded body.
The adjustability of the height of the support plates now allows the distance between the two molded bodies 3 from the radiation plate 2, 7 and thus the intensity of the irradiation of the two foils to be chosen differently, in such a way that the most favorable degree of deformation Softening of the foils on both shaped bodies with approximately the same heating time and with the same temperature of the radiant plate 27 is achieved. The pressure to be maintained in the molded body while the foils are heated can also be set differently for both work stations by means of the two pressure regulators 50.
