Device for folding endless strips of paper in zigzag
The invention relates to a device for folding endless strips of paper in a zigzag fashion.
Currently, zigzag folded papers are widely used, in particular on accounting machines, typewriters, addressing machines, cash registers, etc.
In the machines known for the manufacture of this type of paper, the folding can be done on a single strip or on several stitched or glued assembled strips. Before folding, the paper bands can receive different kinds of printing or coating (text, carbon, coatings, etc.); they can be shaped (tracing, perforating, notching, gluing, etc.). These various operations can be carried out on separate machines or on the machine receiving the folding apparatus.
There are many devices for zigzag folding; in all these devices, the folds are formed alternately by pallets or by clamps mounted either on carriages or on cylinders, or else by rotating pallets in the form of Archimedean screws.
The device according to the invention is characterized by the fact that it comprises two rotating cylinders in contact with one another for driving the paper, slots formed on the periphery of each cylinder and in communication with a pump. air, lights intended to attract the paper alternately on each cylinder, cam-shaped rollers cooperating with each cylinder to determine the folding of the paper attracted alternately on each cylinder, safety peelers and guides at each roller being intended to providing release of the paper after formation of the fold, and a register device for placing the suction ports in communication with the free air.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation view thereof.
Fig. 2 is a view of it in a deployed position.
Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 schematically show the various operations that can be performed by the device. The device shown in the drawing comprises two rotary drive cylinders 1 and 2 which are in contact with each other and which have a multiple development of the folding format.
The paper 3 is driven alternately by these cylinders while being attracted alternately on the two cylinders following a generator by means of a vacuum through openings 4 formed on the periphery of the cylinders 1 and 2.
The paper, drawn onto one of the cylinders, is brought alternately to the level of two rollers 5 and 6 which are driven respectively opposite the cylinders 1 and 2; these rollers 5 and 6 take the form of a cam which acts over the entire width of the paper; this is then folded on its cylinder by the corresponding roller. After the fold has formed, the paper is abandoned by the cylinder on which it was pressed: for this purpose, the drive rolls 1 and 2 are provided with a register device 7 consisting of a cylindrical drawer, or in a variant by a valve, which puts the lights 4 in communication with the free air, which eliminates the action of the vacuum. Safety strippers 8 and guides 9 ensure the release of the paper after the formation of the fold.
The ratio of the respective rotational speeds of cylinders 1 and 2 and rollers 5 and 6 must be well determined.
Fig. 2 shows the cylinders 1 and 2 with their axes XX 'and Y-Y', the suction ducts 10 connected to a vacuum pump 11 and leading to the ports 4 formed by suction openings 12 and 13. Figs. . 3 to 10 show the various stages of the folding operations of the paper 3 alternately attracted by the cylinder 1 and folded in 15 by the roller 5, and then attracted by the cylinder 2 and folded by the roller 6. The paper is gravity driven to forming the screen packs 14.
The formation of the folds 15 is aided by a scribing made by means of a saw blade 16.
This tracing must be located at a very short distance, for example 1 or 2 mm, in front of the suction generator. In another embodiment, the tracing could be done before the paper is engaged between the cylinders.
