Master alloy intended for introduction into cast iron melts for the production of spherulitic cast iron It is known to influence the crystal form of graphite by introducing: Magnesium into cast iron melts. The magnesium was introduced into the cast iron melt with the help of master alloys.
In addition to magnesium-nickel alloys, other 3-magnesium alloys have also been proposed for this purpose. For example, binary magnesium-silicon alloys have been used and the aim has been to achieve the highest possible magnesium content. However, since the magnesium burns out at higher contents and reacts with the molten iron, one has switched to magnesium-silicon-iron alloys *, in which the magnesium content is preferably between 10 and 20%, at least below 25%.
Investigations with the help of these ternary master alloys have already been systematically evaluated, and a graph based on the results obtained suggests that master alloys with more than 20% magnesium only give a very low yield of magnesium in cast iron. Investigations with other alloys also led to the same result.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that with the help of magnesium-iron-silicon alloys, with an iron content of 3 to 35%, a magnesium content of 25 to 55% Mg, preferably 38 to 42%, and in remaining more than 35% silicon, can achieve favorable results in terms of magnesium yield in cast iron. It is preferable to choose alloys with a particularly low melting point between 940 and 970 C, which have a composition of 38 to 42% magnesium, 4 to 7% iron and the remainder silicon.
As has been shown, the magnesium can also be brought into the master alloy in the form of electrons or another alloy containing at least 50% magnesium, so that the finished master alloy also contains the other components of such an alloy, e.g. B. aluminum contains.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a master alloy intended to be introduced into cast iron melts for the production of spheroidal cast iron, characterized in that it contains 25 to 55% magnesium, 3 to 35% iron and more than Contains 35% silicon.
In particular, master alloys with a magnesium content of around 40% are particularly suitable for the production of cast iron with spherulitically solidified graphite. When introducing these master alloys, it is advantageous to ensure that the reaction with the melt takes place below the bath surface.
In the case of the vox alloys according to the invention, the melting interval is usually short and the melting point in the preferred composition is low, so that the pre-alloys can react quickly and uniformly with the cast iron melt.
These alloys also contain the 'phase from the iron-silicon system as a component which buffer the reaction. Due to its formation in the form of thin plates, this phase has a particularly favorable influence on the course of the reaction during the introduction of the master alloy.
The following comparative tests show that increasing the magnesium content in the master alloys has a positive effect on spherulite formation. The same result or even a better result with regard to the formation of spherulites can be achieved with the aid of significantly smaller amounts of master alloy compared to the previously used ones.
The following alloys were used for comparison:

The master alloys were used in such amounts that 0.3% magnesium, based on the pig iron melt, was introduced.
The tests were based on a raw iron siliconized on silicon with about 4.2 to 4.3% carbon. The pre-alloy was introduced into the pig iron melt, which had a temperature of around 1400 ° C., with the aid of a dipping bell.
The results of comparative tests with regard to the spherulite yield can be found in the following table:

The alloys with high magnesium content, however, apart from the advantages indicated above, have the further advantage that they can be easily produced due to their low melting point.
In addition, if they occur, the segregation has roughly the same concentration as the cast ingots, while the segregation of the magnesium-iron-silicon alloys with a low magnesium content has a different composition than the cast ingots and is therefore either discarded or introduced a non-uniformity in the pre-alloy material.
