A method of manufacturing an abrasive tool and a tool obtained by this method. This invention relates to a method of manufacturing an abrasive tool for grinding and the like, and to the tool obtained by this method. The process according to the invention is characterized by the mounting of abrasive particles on a support, the deposition by electroplating of metal on the particles, deposit carried out so as to form a layer covering the particles and provided, on its free face , at least one projection forming an integral part of it and made of loose metal,
the association of said layer with a tool body under conditions such that said projection is engaged in a corresponding cavity of this body and the removal of the support.
Current abrasive tools frequently take the form of a large-diameter grinding wheel comprising a body of light material (plastic, metal or light alloy) and a border carrying the abrasive particles attached to this body under the action of the heat and pressure. As this border is formed from a binder metal whose coefficient of expansion is different from that of the material constituting the body, the alternations of heating and cooling tend to compromise the solidity of the whole.
The present invention makes it possible to manufacture such an abrasive tool, in which the edge carrying the abrasive particles is securely locked on the tool body.
The invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective section of a grinding wheel obtained in accordance with the invention. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sections of a support used for the manufacture of the grinding wheel according to fig. 1, these figures refer to different phases of the process.
Fig. 5 is a thin section through an electrolytic cell showing a stack of media ready for the recovery operation.
Fig. 6 shows a section of one of the supports shown in FIG. 5 after completion of the recovery operation.
Fig. 7 is a section showing how to form the tool body of FIG. 1. The grinding wheel shown in fig. 1 is of the peripheral type, that is to say that it comprises an edge 10 mounted on a body 12 provided with a central opening 13 thanks to which the tool can be mounted on a rotating shaft. The body 12 is made of molded plastic material, or of metal or light alloy cast in a shell. The edge and the body are fixed together by the projections 14 forming an integral part of the edge.
These protrusions have inwardly directed end portions, or ribs 15, occupying corresponding cavities of the body: These protrusions with their outlined portions form a dovetail connection between the edge and the body which they join. bother firmly. This locking system prevents, during cooling; the body and the edge to detach from each other. For the formation of the tool, the first operation is that of the constitution of the edge. For this purpose, a support 16 is used. This support is preferably made of hardened steel.
It is annular in shape and has an internal surface 17 having the shape and size of the edge to be produced. The support is provided with a circumferential groove 18 at its upper face and a rib 19 of corresponding shape in its lower part, so that several supports graze. be stacked on top of one another without the risk of slipping aside.
Apply to the surface 17 of the. supports a layer of soft material, for example a thin film of lead deposited by galvanoplasty. Instead of lead, a thin layer of adhesive can be applied to the surface 17 if desired, but lead is preferable because of its quality as a conductor of electricity. After the application of the wire to the internal surface of the support, the abrasive particles 11 are distributed on this wire in which they are embedded. They are preferably penetrated by means of in. roller and a sufficiently strong pressure is exerted so that they pass through the film and come into contact with the surface of the support.
As soon as the desired amount of particles has been embedded in the support in this way, a number of similar supports are prepared.
When the supports are ready, a ring 21 of thin metallic material - a sheet of tin for example - is placed on each face of each support, this ring having an internal diameter such that the ring protrudes inwards from the edge. of the opening made through the support and the film 20 in which the particles are sealed. The importance of advancing the ring 21 beyond the inner wall of the support. depends on the desired length of the protrusions. In a typical case, the internal diameter of the rings 21 will be approximately 4 minutes less than that of the support.
After the rings 21 have been fitted, the supports are assembled on top of each other in the form of a stack inside an electrolytic cell. First, however, a ring of insulating material 22 is pressed against the underside of the support forming the base of the battery, this ring 22 having an internal diameter slightly less than that of the sheet ring 21 with which it is in contact. The support 16a with the ring 22 in place is then mounted on the inner rim 23 of a ring of insulating material 24, which can be adequately supported in the cell.
for example by means of supports 25. With the support being in position, a ring 22a of insulating material, similar to the ring 22, is placed on the sheet ring 21, at the upper surface of the support. A ring 24a, identical to the ring 24, is then placed on the upper edge of the ring 24, the internal rim of this ring 24a resting on the support 16a. The following support 16b is gleamed in place on the internal rim of the ring 24a and the various elements are assembled, known as described, to form a stack of supports, the number of which can be determined at will.
Each backing carries a thin film of metal on its inner surface, in which the abrasive particles are film sealed. Each carrier is also provided with thin metal rings applied to its top and bottom surfaces, these rings protruding from the inner wall of the carrier. The rings 21 are held in place by rings of insulating material 22 and the insulating rings separate the conductive rings 21 on the adjacent supports.
When the cell has been assembled in the cell, as described, a connection 26 is made with one of the group supports and the electrolyte 27 is introduced into the celloil to a level above the cell. The anode 28 is then placed in the aligned openings of the supports and the electric current is engaged. As it settles, the metal forms a layer 10 which coats the portions of particles exposed to the surface of the film 20 of each support.
Simultaneously, the foil rings give rise to an additional deposit of metal along the upper and lower edges of the film and the deposited metal accumulates on the outside to form the integral protrusions 14 described above. As each support is provided with a ring 21 above and below, the deposited metal layer constitutes two integral protrusions 14, the accumulation of the metal taking place so as to form the withdrawal sectors 15 extending inwardly. and therefore oriented towards each other.
After completion of the electroplating to produce a TO layer of desired thickness on each support, the stack is removed from the cell and the rings 22 and 4 are peeled off. If desired, the rings 21 can also be removed. However, since these rings are of thin, light foil, it is irrelevant whether they are removed or not. The edge formed on the inner surface of each holder and carrying the abrasive particles can now be attached to a tool body.
The tool body is preferably formed while the edge is still in place on the holder. If so practiced, the holder supports the edge during formation of the tool body and possible edge distortion is not to be feared, forming the tool body within the edge mounted on the holder. can be performed in different ways. The molding of a body of plastic material is shown in fig. 7.
For this operation, the support 16 is mounted on a plate 29 having a groove intended to receive the rib 19 of the lower surface of the support. The mold cavity is then completed by an annular block 30 which is placed on the support 16 and which has a rib 31 penetrating into the groove 18 at the top ten support surface. The plate 29 may be provided with a stud 32 having the diameter of the opening 13 which is to be formed through the tool body and which projects above the plate 29 for a fairly long distance. .
As soon as the mold cavity is assembled, as described, a certain quantity of plastic material 33 is introduced therein and a plug 34 is inserted into the opening of the annular block 30. This plug is pushed in until it reaches the level. of plastic. It is provided with an opening 35 intended to receive the stud 32 and with a bore 36 in which the excess plastic material is forced out.
The mold once filled and the stopper 34 in position; the assembly is placed in a press between heated platens. Under the action of heat and pressure, the plastic material becomes compact and turns into a solid tool body 12. During the molding operation, the plastic material 33 is pressed into the space between integral protrusions 14 and these protrusions produce and fill cavities in the tool body. When molding is complete, the tool body with a dovetail connection is fitted to the edge carrying the abrasive particles.
After this molding operation, the parts of the mold can be dismantled and the tool body detached from the support. The tool is. ready for use as soon as the finishing operations are finished.
Instead of making the tool body of plastic material by molding, it can be made of metal or light alloy by shell casting or powder concretion.
