Process for the production of acetyl-containing form acetal of polyvinyl alcohol. If polyvinyl alcohol is condensed with formaldehyde in an aqueous mineral acid solution using one of the known processes, then slightly slimy, rubbery masses are formed. It is impossible to completely remove the unwanted accompanying substances by washing. Therefore z. B. tried to purify such reaction products by reprecipitation from Lö solvents.
This process is inconvenient and economical.
According to other proposals, the acetalization is carried out in organic solvents. At the beginning of the process, the polyvinyl alcohol is suspended by stirring, if necessary with the addition of emulsifiers, in order to then go into solution as the reaction with formaldehyde as acetal progresses. Apart from the fact that the proposed solvents, such as.
B. dioxane, are toxic or expensive, the separation of the acetals causes difficulties, especially when solvents are used which are immiscible with water. One is forced to blow water vapor through the reaction mixture to remove the solvent, which in turn causes the physical nature of the product, the rapid solubility, etc. to suffer.
If you start from polyvinyl acetate and work in an aqueous solution with strong mineral acids, you only get highly acetalized products if enough acid is used that the acetal formed remains in solution. If hydrochloric acid is used as the catalyst, the necessary concentration is at least 20-22%, based on the aqueous phase.
In addition to the strong discoloration that occurs when the polyvinyl alcohol is dissolved, which leads to brownish products, the extensive or complete saponification of the polyvinyl acetate component in the course of the process is disadvantageous because a content of residual acetate groups is desirable, and the finished products must be flexible, and the films have a high number of bending cycles etc. to lend. .
If lower catalyst additives are used to avoid this disadvantage, e.g. B. 8-15% hydrogen chloride based on the aqueous phase, then the reaction does not come to an end, and the aforementioned slimy masses fall out.
If, according to another proposal, 50% sulfuric acid is used, viscous solutions are formed, but 1000 parts of formaldehyde have to be used for 100 parts of polyvinyl alcohol, i.e. an enormous excess. It is also necessary to precipitate with ice water.
These disadvantages can be avoided if, according to the present invention, for the production of acetyl-containing formaldehyde of polyvinyl alcohol, by the action of formaldehyde or such substances release acetyl-containing polyvinyl alcohol in the presence of acids,
an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride and acetic acid which dissolves both the acetyl-containing polyvinyl alcohol and the acetal formed serves as the reaction medium.
The two acids can be exchanged for each other to a certain extent, i.e. the amount of hydrochloric acid can be reduced when using high additions of acetic acid and the amount of acetic acid can be reduced if the concentration is high.
The amount by weight of the hydrogen chloride introduced into the reaction mixture, based on the sum of this amount by weight and the amount by weight of the total amount of water introduced into the reaction mixture, is 1-19% and the amount by weight of the in the acetic acid introduced into the reaction mixture, based on the sum of this amount by weight and the amount by weight of the total water introduced into the reaction mixture, 5 = 60%.
The use of acetic acid is advantageous because the saponification of residual acetate groups present can be limited to a minimum; it has even been shown that low acetylation takes place at high acetic acid concentrations. If you want low-acetate form acetals, you can do this by increasing the amount of hydrochloric acid and reducing the acetic acid concentration.
Through a. The acetate content of the end product can be adjusted using a corresponding mixture of acetic acid and hydrochloric acid. When using such mixtures, the known addition of pure polyvinyl acetate is eliminated in order to achieve a certain residual acetate content. Since the acetalization proceeds quickly and gently without degradation and leads to polymer-like condensates,
the desired final viscosity of the acetal can be obtained by choosing an appropriately polymeric polyvinyl alcohol.
The concentration of the starting polyvinyl alcohol solution depends on the device used for the reaction. When processing in the kneading machine, it is possible to maintain a high solids content, depending on the inherent viscosity of the starting solution up to 40% and more. If agitators are used, 20% and solutions with a lower solids content can be selected. The optimal reaction conditions are generally between 50 and 70 ° C. and 8-2 hours, advantageously between 70 and 3 hours; but you can also maintain higher and lower temperatures and vary the time.
The formaldehyde is mainly used as a commercially available aqueous solution or in the form of formaldehyde-releasing compounds, eg. B. as paraformaldehyde, triogymethylene or as a mixture of both For men.
It is usually not necessary to use more than the theoretical amount. By reducing the same, products with lower acetalization are obtained, if desired. The end product is expediently separated from the solution by slowly diluting it with water with thorough stirring. The subsequent washing and drying does not present any difficulties, since the reaction products are uniform and fine-grained.
Example <I> 1: </I> 1000 g polyvinyl alcohol containing acetyl groups with the saponification number 127 are kneaded with 400 g glacial acetic acid, 140 g 36% aqueous hydrochloric acid and 1000 g 40% aqueous formaldehyde, the polyvinyl alcohol being in solution goes.
The reaction mixture contains about 7% hydrogen chloride, based on the water-I- mixture, and about 40% acetic acid, based on the water-I- acetic acid mixture. The reaction is started at 20-25, the temperature is then increased to 65 C. The reaction has ended after 2 hours.
The analysis of the finely flaky, white end product precipitated from the solution by dilution with water shows that the three structural units of the formulas

from which the polyvinyl formal containing acetyl groups is built up, and which are each designated in the following by A, B and C, are represented by weight as follows

A <SEP> 79.6%
<tb> B <SEP> 11.7%
<tb> C <SEP> 8.7% <I> Example 2:
In a stirrer, 100 kg of polyvinyl alcohol containing acetyl groups and a saponification number of 211 are dissolved in 375 kg of water and then 525 kg of glacial acetic acid and 25 kg of concentrated hydrochloric acid are added. 95 kg of formaldehyde (38%) are stirred into the acidic polyvinyl alcohol solution obtained in this way. Based on the mixture of water -1- hydrogen chloride, 1.96% hydrogen chloride and, based on the mixture water-h acetic acid, 54% acetic acid are present. The temperature is increased to 80%.
After 2 hours, the mixture is cooled and the formed acetal is precipitated from the solution. The strong dilution compared to Example 1 causes a slower course of the reaction. The high acetic acid concentration reduces saponification. A colorless acetal is obtained, the analysis of which gives the following composition
