Ice crampon. The ice crampons are a very useful accessory for mountaineering. These crampons are generally made of wrought iron and their shape can only be changed with difficulty by the user. As a result, it is often not possible to adjust them to a pair of shoes that do not exactly match their size.
The present invention relates to an ice crampon, intended to be attached to a shoe by means of a strap, comprising at least one group of two elements intended to be placed respectively on the op posed edges of a) shoe, a device being provided to join these two elements to each other and in an adjustable manner, each element comprising attachment members for the strap and at least two spikes intended to come into contact with the ice when the crampon is in position of use under the shoe.
The accompanying drawing represents, to. by way of example, an embodiment of a cramp according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows an overview of this crampon.
Fig. 2 shows, in perspective and on a larger scale, a constituent element of the crampon.
The fi-. 3 shows one end of a flexible blade intended to connect the two groups of elements of the crampon and FIG. 4 is a sectional life of a screw for fixing this blade.
The crampon shown in FIG. 1 com takes four elements 1, 2, 3 and 4 each provided with three points 5 directed downwards and two fasteners. for one. These fasteners are each formed by a tongue 6 at the end of which is hooked a ring 7. The strap, which. is not shown, must be passed through the rings 7 to enable the crampon to be fixed to a boot in the same way as for known crampons.
Fig. 2 shows, on a larger scale, the element 3 of the crampon. This element is made of stamped sheet steel and has an arcuate part 8, in which a slot 9 also arcuate is provided. The upper face of this part 8 has ridges 10. The tips 5 are formed even by sheet metal tongues, the cross section of which is substantially U-shaped, which makes them sufficiently rigid. The parts connecting the points 5 of an element to each other are also curved so that their section is. substantially U-shaped.
Element 4 is. similar to element 3, with the exception of striations 10, which are provided on the underside of part 8. Elements 3 and 4 are connected to each other and held in their respective position by bolts 11 and 12, which pass through the. slot 9 of each element. and allow the parts 8 of the two elements to be tightened against one another.
A screw constituting part of the bolts 11 or 12 is shown in detail in FIG. 4. This screw comprises a hexagonal and slotted head 13, an unthreaded part 14, a groove 1.5 and a threaded part 16. The unthreaded part 14 passes through a plate 17 provided with grooves on its. face 17a and whose edges 17b are curved in order to guide this plate relative to the edges of part 8, when the bolt passes through the. slot 9. The bolt nut consists of a second plate similar to 17, but the central bore of which is threaded to allow threaded part 16 to be screwed into it.
When the two bolts 11 and 12 are blocked, the ridged parts of their plate 17 and of their nut cooperate with the ridges 10 of parts 8 of elements 3 and 4 to effectively prevent any relative movement between these two parts.
The elements 1 and 2 are made in the same way as the elements 3 and 4, but each also has a point 18 arranged in the extension of the element and approximately perpendicular to the points 5. Where the crampon is. attached to a shoe, the spikes 18 must protrude in front of the shoe and be substantially in the plane of the sole thereof.
An elastic blade 19 is. still provided to bring together the group of elements 1 and 2 a group of elements 3 and 4. Fig. 3 shows one end of this blade, in which are provided recesses, part 20 of which is circular and another part 21 is trapezoidal.
The circular part has a diameter slightly larger than that of the part 14 of the screw according to fig. 3 and the. width of the recess. to the. junction of the circular part and the. trapezoidal part is larger than the diameter of the. groove 15 of the screw. The other end of the blade 19 also has a series of similar recesses. One end of the. blade also has -Lin hexagonal hole 22 which allows the blade to be used as a wrench for 11 and 12 hexagon head screws.
To bring together the two groups of elements 1 and 2 to 3 and 4, the screw 11 of each group of years is introduced into one or the other of the recesses of the following blade 19. the desired separation of the two groups. The screw is introduced through its groove 15 into the chosen recess (FIG. 4). Its part 14 then comes to be housed in the eireulaire part 20 when the. screw undergoes a slight axial displacement with respect to the blade 19.
Before tightening the screws 11 and 12, the two elements 1 and 2, on the one hand, and 3 and 4, on the other hand, are placed so that they substantially match the contour of the sole of the shoe, the elements 1 and 2 being placed under the. front part of the sole of the shoe and the elements 3 and 4 under the heel thereof. Then the tightening is carried out and the crampon can be attached to the shoe, in a known manner, using a strap passing through the rings 7.
The crampon that has been described can. be used in different ways. If the user does not wish to use the points 18, he can change the position of the elements 1. and? so that these points are directed against elements 3 and 4.
The elements 1 and 2 can very easily be separated from the elements 3 and 4 by removing the blade 19, which makes it possible to fix only two elements, for example 3 and 4, to the shoe to constitute a simpler crampon. Thanks to the. possibility of adjusting the spacing of the two elements 3 and 4 of a cram pon, it is also possible to fix it under a ski, which can. be advantageous for climbing steep slopes with icy snow.
Of course, we could. make numerous modifications to the cram pons which have been described. One could in particular provide one or more slots on only one of the two elements of a group, the other element having only threaded holes for tightening screws. We could also remove the slots and replace them with a series of holes. It is clear that the bolts could be replaced by other clamping devices, for example, by lever-operated clamping members.
The blade 19 could also be replaced by another rigid part but articulated on at least one of the groups of elements. It goes without saying that instead of being made of pressed sheet steel, the studs could be of wrought iron or cast metal and that the number and arrangement of the points could be varied. However, the. Embossed sheet steel is very advantageous because it allows very strong and much lighter studs to be obtained than the known wrought iron studs.
