Process for the production of the pentaerythritol dichlorohydrin. The subject of the main patent is a process for the production of pentaerythritol-dichlorohydrin from pentaerythritol-dichloro-liydrin-monosulphurous acid ester, which presumably has the following constitution:
EMI0001.0008
The process consists of treating the penta-egg-vthritol-dichlorohydrin-monosulphurous acid ester with acidic saponifying agents.
In further processing of this invention it has now been found that the same compound can be produced if the pentaerythritol - dichlorohydrin - monosulphurous acid ester is saponified with alcoholic alkali in an amount of about 2 moles of alkali per mole of ester.
The reaction is generally started by gentle heating of the reactants dissolved in excess alcohol. Sulfur dioxide is split off (read by the alcoholic allial lye.
As in the case of the main patent, the pentaerythritol dichlorohy- (li-yne monosulphurous acid ester in the form of the crude reaction product resulting from the reaction of pentaerythritol finite thionyl chloride in the presence of pyridine can also be used in this case.
Example 1: 22 g (about 111o mol) of sulfurous acid ester of pentaerythritol dichlorohydrin are mixed with 100 cubic meters of absolute alcohol in which 11.5 g of KOH (about 2.110 mol) are dissolved on a water bath for 30 minutes kept boiling under reflux.
After the separated salt mixture has been filtered off and the alcohol has been distilled off, pentaerythritol dichlorohydrin remains in an almost theoretical yield.
Example 2: The crude ester used as starting material is prepared as follows. A mixture of 3540 g of thionyl chloride (30 mol) and 240 g of pyridine (3 mol) is added over the course of about two hours with stirring and cooling 1225 g of pentaerythritol (9 moles) were added. After standing for a while with vigorous stirring, the bath temperature is gradually brought to steam until no gas is evolved. Young is more observable.
250 g of the light brown, oily reaction product (about 1.1 mol), which mainly consists of the sulfurous acid ester of pentaerythritol dichlorohydrin, are gradually mixed with 1000 cm3 of alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution, while cooling and swirling, containing 140 g of KOH (2.5 Moles). An abundant mixture of salts is immediately deposited. After boiling under reflux on the steam bath for one hour, it is filtered off and distilled in vacuo.
After a preliminary run containing alcohol and pyridine (up to 120 C / 3 mm Hg), the bulk of the pentaerythritol dichlorohydrin is caught between 130 and 150 C / 3 mm Hg, which melts at 75-80 C and one for many technical purposes sufficient purity. owns.
