A l'instant 9 (fig.
Des circuits analogues sont établis par l'intermédiaire des contacts à came C5 et des contacts R2a pour exciter à leur tour, après la fin des impulsions respectives, une ou plu sieurs bobines de relais, dans l'ordre suivant A l'instant. 7, un circuit passant par les contacts R2a;
A l'instant 6, les contacts à came C5 (fig.
A l'instant.
A l'instant.
Device comprising at least one relay circuit. The present invention relates to a device comprising at least one relay circuit and. more particularly, but not exclusively, such a device usable in a calculating machine.
It is often desirable that the armature of a relay is not actuated until a voltage pulse applied to the relay coil is completed; this case arises, for example, when the relay coil is connected to the voltage source through its own contacts. It is known, in order to obtain this delay in operating a relay, to produce an electrical delay, or to use auxiliary delay circuits comprising a second relay or an electronic valve; but, if these members are to allow the operation of the armature of the relay immediately after the end of the pulse, it is necessary that the duration of the latter be kept equal to the predetermined delay supplied by the relay.
The key object of the present invention is therefore to provide a device comprising at least one relay circuit in which the armature of this relay is actuated immediately after the end of a control pulse, even when the duration of the latter varies between limits. very wide apart.
This device is characterized in that said circuit. includes an electromagnetic relay. a rectifier connected in parallel with the rolling of said relay, a capacitor connected in series with this winding and a resistor connected in parallel with the winding and the capacitor and the terminals of which are tines to receive a voltage of actuation of the relay, the rectifier being arranged so as to behave like a shunt of low resistance connected to the terminals of the bearing during the application of said voltage and the charging of the capacitor which results from this application, thus preventing the relay operation,
and to behave as a high resistance shunt for the winding during the discharge of the capacitor following the cessation of the application of the voltage, causing. thus the operation of the relay.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, three embodiments of the device forming the subject of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is the electrical diagram of the first embodiment which constitutes a double-acting relay with delayed operation.
Fig. 2 is a cam timing diagram of one embodiment shown in FIG. 3.
Fig. 3 is the electric diagram of the second embodiment which constitutes a numbering order of a relay addition decimal counter.
Fig. 4 is the electrical diagram of the. third embodiment which constitutes a numbering order of a relay addition and subtraction decimal counter, and Class <B> 11 </B> FIG. 5 is a cam timing diagram of this embodiment.
Relay R1 (fig. 1) is of the double action type, that is to say that when the attraction coil RI-P is energized, the armature of the relay is placed in the operating position and remains in this position even when the excitation of the attraction coil has ceased. The armature returns to its normal position under the effect. of the excitation of an unlocking coil L. This operating mode can be achieved by several known methods. For example, the frame can be mounted so that a lever action achieves two stable extreme positions of the frame.
Another method consists in fixing the armature in the operating position by an automatic mechanical lock, this lock being released by the energization of the coil L and the armature returning to the normal position under the action of a spring.
Relay R1 is shown in fig. 1 with its frame in the normal position. When switch 3 is closed, a circuit is established in passing. by the negative supply line 1, the switch 3, the Rla contacts (in normal position), the resistor 4-, and the positive supply line 2. The capacitor 55 is in series with respect to the circuits of the rectifier 6 and. of the. coil P of the relay, these last two members being mounted in parallel with respect to each other.
This last network is mounted in shunt on resistor 4; consequently, when the switch 3 is closed, the capacitor 5 begins to charge and the charge lasts until the moment when this capacitor 5 is at the potential existing at the ends of the resistor 4. The resistor of the rectifier 6 in the normal sense is weak compared to the resistance of the. coil, so that most of the charging current of the capacitor 5 passes through the rectifier 6 and only a small fraction. of this current. go through it. coil P, this fraction being insufficient to cause the operation of the relay.
If we open switch 3, when capacitor 5 is fully charged, that is discharged through resistor 4-, rectifier 6 and coil P. The resistance of rectifier 6 in the direction opposite to the normal direction is raised by compared to that of the coil P, so that the greater part of the discharge current passes through the latter. This current is sufficient. to cause the attraction of the armature towards the coil P; Rla contacts are. therefore moved and. hands held in their new position by the relay's normal mechanical rusting worm.
When switch 3 is closed again, a circuit is established. via line 1, switch 3, contacts R1 a: in modified position, resistor 7 and line 2; the capacitor 8 is then charged via the rectifier 9. When the switch 3 is opened, the capacitor 8 is discharged through the unlocking coil L, as explained above. for coil P, and the armature returns. therefore in the normal position where it is mechanically locked again: We see that the relay is not actuated for. switching on and charging the capacitor, but only when this voltage has been removed and during discharge of the capacitor.
In the particular circuit shown, this operating mode has the advantage of preventing the generation of spark those at the <I> RI </I> a contacts, since no current flows through these contacts when the relay is operating. . The need for special contacts, the closing of which precedes opening, is also avoided, contacts which would be essential if the relay were actuated during the duration of the pulse.
Although the example chosen consists of a double-acting relay, it should be understood that the same delay method can generally be applied to. all other relay models.
Experience has shown that it works. satisfactory could be obtained by using a capacitor of three microfa.rads and a resistor of 1500 ohms in the case of a demanding relay. an operating current of about 60 milliamps. However, these figures are only given as an example, since the optimum values depend on the operating current, the resistance of the relay coil and the voltage used.
We can. connecting to each other several relays operating in the manner described above so as to produce a pulse and relay calculating machine; the. ease with which one can. supplying current to the relays through their own contacts without risking sparks allows a very simple circuit to be used. Fig. 3 shows such a circuit corresponding to a class of units of a calculating machine based on the decimal system and intended particularly to operate under the effect.
of impulses obtained by the exploration of punched record cards. Different methods are known for exploring such plugs and for producing a pulse @@ an instant. corresponding to the digit of the explored position, in accordance with the adjustment table (fig. 2) which represents the times relative to the digits from 0 to 9, to the positions designated by the letters <I> X </I> and . <I> Y </I> on the form, and at positions Z and R corresponding to the interval between the explorations of two successive files.
An intermediate class, for example the tens class of the calculating machine, has been shown in FIG. 3. Each class of machine is roughly analogous to. the one that is. shown, and therefore only one class will be described in detail. The com class takes six relays, one intake relay R2 controlling entry into the class, four relays R3, <I> R4, R5, R6 </I> representing respectively. digits 1, 2, 4 and 8, and a R7 carry record relay.
To enable a value to be read in the classroom, a plug socket makes it possible to connect the socket 12 to the appropriate column of the device. explore the cards. We can assume, for example, that the number 9 is, recorded in that particular column. At the instant 9 (fig. 2), a pulse is produced by the exploration of the hole 9 and a circuit is formed by the exploration apparatus, the; plug, socket 12, contacts R10a, <I> Réa, </I> R9a, resistor 21 and positive line 11 of the power supply.
The capacitor 23 is charged through the intermediary of the rectifier 22 and, when the pulse; has ceased, this capacitor 23 is discharged through the attraction coil R2P to actuate the relay R2 in the manner already described. The contacts R2a therefore close and remain closed by a mechanical locking until the moment when the coil R2L is energized.
At instant 8, a circuit is established through line 10, cam contacts 5 (fig. 2 and 3), contacts R2a (in modified position), contacts R3a, resistor 24 and line 11. (when the pulse ceases as a result of the opening of contacts C5, capacitor 25 is discharged to actuate relay R3 and the number 1 is thus recorded.
Analogous circuits are established by the intermediary of the cam contacts C5 and the contacts R2a to excite in their turn, after the end of the respective pulses, one or more relay coils, in the following order at the instant. 7, a circuit passing through the contacts R2a;
the Rira contacts (in modified position), resistor 29 and line 11, ra leads relay R3 in normal position, and a parallel circuit passing through contacts R3a, <I> Ma, </I> R4a, the resistor 26 and the. line 11, activates relay R4 and records the number 2.
At instant 6, the circuit passing through contacts R2a, contacts R3a in the normal position, resistor 24 and line 11. activates relay R3 and. records a total of 3.
At instant 5, the circuit passing through contacts Ma, contacts R3a (in modified position), contacts R6a, contacts R4ca in modified position, contacts R5a, resistor 27 and line 1.1, actuates the relay R5 and stores the digit 4, while branch circuits passing through contacts R3a and R4a replace relays R3 and R4 in the normal position. At instant 4, relay R3 is energized, as at instant 8, in order to register the number 5.
. At time 3, relay R4- is energized and relay R3 returned to the normal position, as at. instant 7, in order to register the number 6.
At time 2, relay R3 is energized, as at time 6, in order to register the number 7. At time 1, the circuit. passing through contacts Ma, contacts R3a (in modified position), R6a contacts, R1a contacts (in modified position), R5cc contacts (in modified position), resistor 28 and line 11, energizes relay R6 and .
records the number 8, and, the derivative circuits passing through contacts R3a, R4a, R5a ,, replace, in normal position, relays R.3, R-1 and R5.
At time 0, relay R3 is energized, as at time 8, to store digit 9. In addition, before time 0. cam contacts C4 close (fig. 2) to energize the relay. R13, so that at instant 0, a circuit is established through line 10, cam contacts C5, contacts R2cc (moved), contacts 813a (closed), the: contacts RBb, resistor 34 and line 11, to return relay R2 to the normal position.
Thus, after time 0, the number 9 is recorded by the operation of relays B3 and R6 and relay R2 is returned to the normal position.
If the. The next file to explore contains the value 2 in this particular column, the relay R2 is excited at time 2 by the intermediary of a circuit. already described. At instant I., a circuit is established, passing through line 10, the contacts to. cam C5, contacts R2a (in modified position), contacts R3a (in modified position), contacts R6a- (in modified position), contacts R9b, pull coil R7P, and line 11, for energize the R7 restraint relay.
At the same time, the branch circuits passing through the contacts Rôa, and R6 # carry out the return to the normal position of the relays R3 and R6. At time 0, relay R3 is energized and relay R2 is brought back to the normal position by means of the circuits already described. At instant X, the. cam C3 closes and a circuit is established passing through league 10, cam contacts C3, contacts R7a closed, contacts M'a and line 20.
Contacts R2'a, correspond in the class of units immediately. greater than contacts R2a in this class, so that the. line 20 is connected to the relay of value 1 in the higher class and that an impulse on this line causes the entry of a unit thus carrying out correctly the carry. A branch circuit passing through the contacts R7a and through the resistor 33 returns relay 1i7 to the normal position when the contacts C3 open.
The R7'a contacts are actuated by the class restraint relay immediately. lower, so that if this relay has been actuated, an input of a unit a. been carried out in this class when the C3 contacts close. The relatively long closing of the contacts C3, at the same time as the immediate excitation of the. R7P coil of the relay, which does not have a delay circuit by capacitor, allow long carry-overs, that is, it is possible to correctly carry out successive carry-ons at the time a unit is. added to the lowest of several classes all on the number 9.
The description given showed how two digits could be added; we will now explain how we can subtract a digit from another digit. So that the. my calculator can perform subtractions, the relay R8 is energized by connecting. the socket 15 has a suitable potential source.
It is assumed that the number 9 has already been registered in the class and that it is necessary to subtract the number 2. At time 9, a circuit is established passing through line 1.0, the cam contacts C2 , the <I> Réa </I> contacts (in modified position), la, resistor 21 and. line 11. Relay R2 is thus energized, so that. between the moment. 8 and instant 2, impulses are supplied to the class of the machine and carry out the addition, as has already been explained: il. results only after the moment. 2, the class records the number 6, since seven additional pulses have been introduced and the R7 restraint relay has been energized.
At instant 2, the pulse produced by exploring the plug uses a through circuit. over there. socket 1.2, contacts R10a, contacts R8b (in modified position), resistor 34 and line 11, so as to return relay R2 to the normal position. Thus, no pulse is applied to the machine after ins t 2 through the cam contact C5, since the contacts R2a are now open.
In the other classes, which were initially at zero and to which no pulse is applied as a result of scanning the card, nine pulses are now applied and. all these classes therefore register the number 9. At the instant X, the cam contacts C3 close to return the key-retained relay to the normal position and. introduce withholding. Since all the classes, except the one considered, record the number 9, the carry produced by the operation of relay R7 successively reduces to zero the classes of order higher than that of the considered class and. the highest class restraint relay is finally activated.
The contacts of this relay, instead of being connected to corresponding contacts <I> to </I> R2a, are connected to a socket connection. This socket is connected by a plug to another socket connected on the operation side to the corresponding contacts <I> to </I> R2ca from year ago. lowest class of the machine, class for which it n -, # - has no contacts corresponding <I> to </I> R7'a. In this way, the carry from the highest class is. introduced in the class the low folds of the machine.
The lowest class is reduced to zero and. the carry transferred to the tens class which already registers the digit 6, so that we obtain a final registration of the digit 7 which results from the subtraction between 2 and 9 in this class. If the number to be subtracted is greater than the recorded number, the result is recorded in the usual way as a 9's complement.
To be able to read the value stored in the machine, it is necessary to energize relays R9 and R11 by connecting sockets 16 and 18 to. a suitable source of current. When the C1 cam contacts close. at instant E (fig. 2), a circuit is established by line 10, cam contacts Cl, contacts R9a (in modified position), resistor 21 and line 11, so as to excite the coil R2P when the cam contacts open again.
With relay R2 actuated, an impulse is sent to the machine, at time 9 of the following cycle, passing through cam contacts C5 and contacts R2a in the modified position, so as to add one unit to the en machine registration. Likewise, pulses are applied for all index positions corresponding to the lower digits, including zero, so that a total of ten additional pulses is obtained.
Assume now that the initial registration in the class is 7. In this case, at time 7, the class has already received two pulses and therefore registers the digit 9, so that one circuit is established by line 1.0, cam contacts C5, contacts R2a (in modified position), contacts R3a (in modified position), R6a - contacts (in modified position), R9b contacts (in modified position) modified position), Rlla contacts (in modified position),
and the socket 13 to which a current socket can be connected to direct to another machine, for example a printing machine, the pulse corresponding to time 7. Derived circuits return the relays R3 to the normal position. and R6.
The remaining seven pulses produced by C5 during this cycle record <B> (y </B> using the digit <B> 7 </B> in the class and, <B> p </ B > that the displacement of the contacts R9b opposed the operation of the restraint relay R7 when the count went from 9 to 0, the. value could be read, and the. class. returned to its recording of. origin.
To reset the machine to zero, relay R12 is. excited thanks to the. connects its between socket 19 and a potential source, so that the contacts <I> 812a. </I> and R12d are closed and thus allow the excitation of the relays R8, R9, R10 and R11 via of circuits starting from the. socket 19. As in the case of reading, the closing of the cam contacts Cl causes the excitation of relay R2, and the introduction of pulses when C5 closes.
However, if we assume that the initial record is 7, two more pulses have been counted at time 7 and produce record 9; a circuit is established via line 10, cam contacts C5, contacts R2a (in modified position), contacts R3a (in modified position), contacts R5a, R9b, Rlla, R10a, R8b, all in position modified, resistor 34, and line 11, so as to return relay R2 to the normal position.
Since relay R2 has returned to the normal position, no further pulse is present. applied to the. class and the relays R3 and R6 are returned to the normal position by the circuits derived from the circuit described, so that the machine remains at zero. By making a connection on the socket 13, the value can be read at the same time as the zeroing takes place.
Although the machine. calculate described works in the decimal system, a.11 during the supposed operation, it can be easily. suitable for other classification systems.
To calculate in the system (bad duodéci) the circuit. terminating ali restraint relay R7, through contacts R6a, must. be prepared for number 11. instead of number 9. In this case, the central contacts R4a are connected at the cut side of the contacts R3a and the contacts R6a are connected between the contacts R4a and R5a. instead of being between contacts R3a and R4a.
If the R6a contacts are connected between the R5a contacts and the resistor 28, the machine operates in the base 16 system. If the R10 relay is energized by a connection to the. socket 17, and that another ma chine is, connected to socket 14 by a current plug plug, the reading is done. on the second machine in the same way as using bush 12.
It is also possible to construct a calculating machine using a code different from code 1, 2, 4, 8. FIG. 4 represents two classes of an adding and subtracting machine using the code 1, 2, 2, 4. The method of subtraction is. also a modification of that shown in FIG. 3. In the circuit shown in the latter figure, the. subtraction is. carried out by actuating the intake relay R2 to. moment 9 and bringing it back to normal position a.11 moment where occurs. the impulse, the complement of the number to be subtracted being. thus in troduced.
In the variant shown in FIG. 4, the. machine is pulled back when the subtraction is performed.
Each of the blocks of FIG. 4 represents a complete relay. with the associated resistors, capacitor and rectifier, with the exception of relays R1.9 and R25 which are double-acting and. that do not include a network delay key. In each case, the conductor on the left is connected to the attraction coil P and the one on the right to. the release coil L.
The relays R14 and R20 are respectively the intake relays for the. class of units and that of tens. Relays R15 to. R18 and R21 to. R24 represent. the numbers 1, 2, 2, 4 respectively. in the units class and in the tens class. The relays R19 and R25 are the restraint relays. The addition is. carried out as we have already explained. For example, if the number 7 must be entered in the machine which is initially at zero, the pulse produced by exploring the card excites relay R1.4 at the end of instant 7 by l 'intermediary of the. socket 12 and contact R27a.
At time 6, the cam contacts C5 (fig. 2 and 4) provide. an impulse which energizes relay R15 and registers the number 1 through the circuit, passing through line 10, cam contacts C5 in modified position, contacts R14a in modified position, contacts R15a, relay R7 .5 and the. line 11, the current excitation occurring after the end of the pulse.
At the following instants, the impulses coming from the cam contacts C5 actuate and return to the normal position the relays, as it is. indicated below.
At instant 5, relay R16 is actuated via contacts R1.5a (in modified position), contacts R29a, contacts <I> 816a. </I> and contacts 29b, while relay Rl5 is returned to normal position via contacts R15n in modified position.
At instant 4, relay R15 is actuated again by means of contacts R15a.
At insta.nt 3, relay R17 is actuated by means of contacts R15a (in modified position), contacts R29a, contacts Rl6a (in modified position), contacts R29 (1, contacts R17a and contacts R29e Relay R15 is returned to the normal position as previously.
At instant 2, relay R15 is actuated again via contacts 815a .. At instant 1, relay R18 is actuated via contacts R15a (in modified position), R29a., R16a (in modified position), R29d, R17 (, (in modified position), It <I> 29 f </I> and. R, 18a.
The R16 relay is. returned to normal position by a branch circuit starting from contacts R29 f and passing. by contacts R29c, and, relay R15 est. brought back to normal position, as before.
At time 0, relay R1.5 is actuated key again, so that relays R15, R1.7 and R18 now register the number 7.
The contacts controlled by relay R29 are actuated when under traction is carried out; they are identical in each class of the machine.
If a second number, for example 5, is added in the unit class, the machine registers, after two pulses, the number 9 with the four energized relays R15, R16, R1.7 and R18.
At the third pulse, a circuit is established passing through line 10, cam contacts C5, contacts R14 (in modified position), R15a (in modified position), R29a, R16a (in modified position), R29d , R17a (in modified position), R29f, R18a (in modified position), 829h., R27c, 826a., The pull coil of the R7.9 restraint relay and line 11. The branch circuits passing through the coils relays R1.5, R16, R17 and R18 perform. their return to normal position.
The fourth and fifth pulses register the number 2 in the. class of units. After time Z, the cam contacts C10 close (fig. 4 and 5) to energize the relay R26. At the instant R, the cam contacts C8 close to constitute a circuit not healthy by the. line 10, the cam contacts CS, contacts R19a (in modified position), R20a, <I> R21 a, </I> the attraction coil of relay R21 and line 11, so as to introduce the restraint in the tens class and finally to record the number 12.
To perform a subtraction, the relay R29 is energized by connecting the socket 37 to a suitable source of potential. This con nexion moves all the corresponding contacts and changes the connections leading to the relays of the machine, so that the operation. of these reduces the value already recorded. For example, we suppose that the number 7 is registered in the class of units and that we want. subtract the number 3.
The first impulse coming from cam contacts C5, passes through contacts R14a (in modified position), contacts R15a (in modified position), the release coil of relay R15 and line 11, so as to back up. in normal position relay Rl5 and to produce a recording of the digit 6.
Just now. 1, the second pulse passes through a circle marked out by contacts R14a (displaced), R15a, R29a (in modified position), R16a, R29b (in modified position). R17a and R29f (both in modified position), the release coil of relay R17 and line 1.1. Consequently, a recording of the number 5 is obtained with the energized relays R15 and R18.
Just now. 0, a circuit. analogous to the one who receives. the first impulse is established to bring relay R15 back to normal position and leave a recording of 4.
The deductions between classes are. carried out in the same way as during the addition, but, since the. machine is set up to do subtractions, the carry reduces the registration of the class into which it introduces a unit. The connection of the restraints from the contacts R25a of the tens restraint relay is brought back to the contacts R14a of the admission unit relay, so as to. allow the introduction of the highest class restraint in the. lowest class, intro which occurs when the highest class record goes through zero.
The method of reading the. current value stored in the machine is the same as described previously. The relay R27 is energized by a connection on the socket 36 and, before time 9, the intake relays are actuated by the intermediary of the contacts R27a and R27b and as a result of the closing of the cam contacts C7 (fig. 4 and 5). Thus, ten pulses are applied to each class of the machine from the cam contacts C5 to provide a regulated pulse which originates from the line normally operating the restraint circuit and which passes through the contacts R27c in the modified position to terminate at the socket. 13.
This circuit is particularly useful in certain applications, because it allows reading of the complement. of the recorded value, a possibility which does not exist in the circuit described above. The relay R27 is energized as before, but the subtraction relay R29 is also energized. As a result, the ten pulses are now subtracted from each class record, and the resulting set pulse occurs when the record goes from 0 to 9. So if the record is. 7 in a particular class, seven pulses are introduced at time 3, and the record goes to. zero.
At instant \ ?, the record changes to 9 and a pulse is. produced at. the. socket 13, this correctly adjusted pulse providing the. reading of the complement of the recorded value. The remaining two pulses reduce the recording to 7.
We can. bring the machine back to zero while doing so. the. reading by energizing, the relay R28 by means of a connection to the, socket 35, and this resetting acts from the. manner described above. However, if the machine provides a reading of the complement of the recorded value, the reading pulse occurs when the machine goes from 0 to 9 and each class therefore registers the digit 9. If this condition is. filled, relays R30P and. R31P are excited, since they are in parallel with the relays R28 and R29.
Contacts R30a and <I> 831a. </I> close. to establish a circuit leading to the holding coils. <I> R30II </I> and R31H by the way. through contacts at. cam C11 (fig. 4 and. 5). When the CS contacts close, a circuit is established passing through the R30b and R31b contacts (in modified position) and through the contacts. R14a to bring the relays of the. lowest class.
The circuit is also extended. through contacts R26a (in modified position): and, contacts R19a up to the next class to return the relays of this class to normal position. If other classes are used, analogous circuits intervene to bring these classes dP 9 â. 0.
