Thrust bearing. The present invention relates to a thrust bearing of the type comprising a rotating ring bearing on a ring of non-rotating pads,. These pads being arranged, relative to the ring, so as to create at the time of starting -and to maintain during rotation of the ring a film of oil between the adjacent surfaces of the ring and the pads.
Known thrust bearings of this type are used to withstand very high loads, for example rotors of hydro-electric machines comprising a turbine wheel, a shaft and a generator rotor which together can reach several hundred tons.
It is absolutely necessary in such applications that the load be uniformly distributed over all the pads to avoid the risks of seizing or overheating managed by one or more pads.
Various means are already known making it possible to obtain a uniform distribution of the load on the pads: On the one hand, mechanical means which are not perfect because the friction hinders the balancing action of the organs.
On the other hand, another means is known which, for its part, is hydraulic and consists in transferring to the frame of the bearing the load which the rotating ring imposes on the pads, by means of a volume of pressurized oil. . This hydraulic transmission of the load therefore makes it possible to perfectly balance the load on each pad. In practice, in the latter case; the ring of shoes is carried by at least one piston capable of moving in a cylinder in which pressurized oil acts, so as to allow the shoes to fit against the corresponding face of the rotating ring.
However, in such a bearing, the pressurized oil serving as a transmission member. load is supplied by a pump, - and any damage occurring to this pump may necessitate stopping the machine of which the bearing is part.
The thrust bearing "according to the invention is precisely of the type in which each pad is carried by a piston capable of moving in a cylinder in which oil is capable of acting, at least momentarily, under pressure, said cylinders being in communication with one another, so as to allow a uniform distribution of the load to be obtained on all the rollers.
This thrust bearing is characterized in that a -dispositif with adjustable wedge is placed between each pad -and the part of the frame for mant support of the bearing, this device being capable of replacing the action of the pressure of oil for fully transmitting the load from the pad to the frame while preserving the uniform distribution of the load on all the pads. - The appended drawing shows, by way of example, four embodiments of the thrust bearing according to invention.
Fig. 1 is an axial section of the first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a section on II-II of fig.1.
FIG. 3 is a partial view in axial section of the second embodiment.
Fig. 4 is a section along IV-IV of fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an axial section of the third embodiment, and FIG. 6 a view in axial section of the fourth embodiment.
The first embodiment of the thrust bearing shown in Figs.1 and 2 comprises a rotating ring 1 bearing on a ring of non-rotating shoes 2. These pads 2 are arranged, relative to the ring 1, so as to create when starting and to maintain during the rotation of the ring a film of oil between the adjacent surfaces of the ring and skates.
Each of the pads 2 is integral with a piston 3 capable of moving in a cylinder 4 so as to allow the pad 2 to 'fit against the corresponding face of the rotating ring. These cylinders 4 are formed in a ring fixed 5 carried by the part of the frame 6 forming a support. As shown in fig. 2; the cylinders 4 are all in communication with each other by channels 7.
The load of a machine which must be supported by the bearing is transmitted to it by a shaft 8 of the machine on which is wedged a sleeve 9 bearing on the ring 1 which it is made integral in rotation by journals 10.
A wedge device is arranged between each pad 2 and the frame 6 '. In this embodiment, this device -est located. Between the piston 3 and the bottom of the corresponding cylinder 4. This wedge device comprises a solid body 11, in this case a steel ball, capable of being displaced radially with respect to the axis of the bearing, between the lower face 12 of the piston 3 and the corresponding face. dante 13 from the bottom of cylinder 4.
These two faces 12 and 13 each have an added part 14, respectively 15, intended to come into contact with the ball 11. As shown in FIG. 2, these parts 14 and 15 are established in the form of a cylindrical channel, whose respective generators converge towards the outside of the pa lier.
The ball 11 is surrounded by a ring 16 to which is connected a threaded rod 17. The latter passes through the wall of the cylinder 4, and a nut 18 screwed onto it allows, on the one hand, the ball 11 to be moved from there. 'outside the ring 5 and, on the other hand, .de fix the ball 11 in a .determined position.
Rings 20 are intended to guarantee the sealing of piston 3.
A machine fitted with the thrust bearing described above is put into service as follows: While the machine is still at a standstill, the cylinders 4 are supplied with pressurized oil, using of a pump not shown. This pressurization of the cylinders 4 makes it possible to distribute the load uniformly over all the pads 2. Following this pressurization of the cylinders 4, the pistons 3 may be at different levels from each other.
This difference is mainly due to the unequal deformations of the part of the frame forming the support under the effect of the load. By maneuvering the nuts 18, the balls 11 are moved so that they come into contact both with the parts 15 and with parts 14, so that the load of each pad can be transmitted to the frame 6 by through the balls 11.
The pressurized oil feed pump can then be taken out of service. As soon as the oil pressure drops in the cylinders 4, the load on the pads is therefore transmitted entirely through the balls 11.
The thrust bearing is thus set and the machine it equips can be started.
The second embodiment of the thrust bearing, shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, comprises substantially all of the members of the first. The only differences are as follows: the balls 11 have been replaced by bodies 21 in the form of cylinders, the two ends of which are formed by spherical caps; the segments 20 have been replaced by a gasket 22 of rubber or other similar material.
However, this second embodiment differs above all from the first by the fact that at least one of the pads 2, forming a block with a piston 3, has in its body a channel 23 intended to communicate the film of oil formed between the active surface 24 of the bearing and the ring 1 with the corresponding cylinder 4.
Thus, once the oil film has formed during operation of the machine, all the cylinders 4 are supplied with pressurized oil from said oil film.
In addition, this same pad 2 has an exhaust channel 25 making it possible to limit the pressure prevailing in the cylinders 4. A device for adjusting the flow rate of the exhaust channel comprises a shutter member constituted by a piston. having an adjusting edge 27. This piston 26 is capable of sliding in the mouth of the channel 25 and its edge 27 cooperates with a corresponding edge 28 located at the entrance of the channel 25.
A mechanism makes it possible to adjust the level of the adjusting edge 27 relative to the frame 6 of the bearing and, at the same time, the level of the pads 2 when the machine is running; this mechanism comprises a rod 29 capable of sliding transversely in the ring 5, and connected by a rod 30 to the piston 26. This rod 29 is integral with the piston 31 still tending, under the effect of the pressure prevailing in the cylinders , to move the rod 29 to the left, looking at fig. 3 and, consequently, to return the piston 26 to the opening position of the channel 25.
A stop mechanism 32 (not shown in detail) acts on the piston 31 to determine the position of the piston 26 and, thereby, the height of the adjusting edge 27.
The commissioning of a machine provided with the thrust bearing according to the second embodiment takes place as follows: While the machine is stationary, and as for the first embodiment, the 4 cylinders in pressurized oil using a pump not shown.
This pressurization of the cylinders 4 makes it possible to obtain a uniform distribution of the load over all of the pads 2. The bodies 21 are then moved to compensate for the differences in level of the pistons 3 relative to the bottom of the cylinders 4 so that the contact is established between the pistons 3 and the body 21, on the one hand (via the part 14), and between said body 21 and the base 13, on the other hand (via the part 15 ).
Once this operation is completed, the pressurized oil supply pump to the cylinders 4 may or may not be taken out of service, and the machine may be started. If said feed pump has not been stopped before starting the machine, it will be put out of service as soon as the machine has reached its normal speed, because as soon as the ring 1 starts rotating,. the film of oil created between the latter and the pads 2 itself ensures the supply of pressurized oil to the cylinders 4.
The adjusting edge 27 of the udder 26 can then be brought to a level ensuring the maintenance of contact between the udders 3 and the bodies 21. Preferably, this edge 27 is adjusted to a slightly higher level, so that both that the machine is in service, the pistons 3 are slightly separated from the bodies 21, and thus the uniform distribution of the load on all the pads 2 by the pressure of the oil is guaranteed despite the vibrations, the settling and possibly wear of the pads 2.
In this embodiment, the bodies 21 therefore constitute safety members guaranteeing normal operation of the bearing, even if a drop in pressure occurs in the cylinders 4.
Various variants of this second embodiment could be provided. However, they will not be described in detail here, because the very principle of the supply by the oil film of the cylinders 4 has been described in patent No. 304117, in which several variants have been described which, all, could be combined with one or the other of the first two embodiments (fig. 1 to 4).
The embodiments shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 differ from the first embodiment in that the pads 2, instead of being in one piece with their respective piston 3, form two separate pieces. As can be seen in fig. 5 and 6, each pad 2 has at its lower part a boss 33 through which it comes into contact with the. outer face 34 of the corresponding piston 3. This support 33 therefore leaves complete freedom for the pad 2 to perfectly match the underside of the ring 1.
The construction of the body 11, of the cylinder 4 and of the adjustment means 16 to 18 of the ball of this third embodiment is similar to that of the first (fig.1). In the embodiment shown in FIG. 6, the body interposed between the bottom 13, said cylinder 4, and the lower face 12 of the pis tone 3 has the shape of a prism 35 of trapezoidal section. . In the latter case, no part 14 or 15 is attached to the bottom 13 of the cylinder 4 or to the underside 12 of the piston 3.
The plane of the bottom 13 @ is substantially horizontal and the plane of the face 12 converges towards it towards the outside of the bearing.
-As a variant of the various embodiments shown, the. means for adjusting the solid body 11, 21 or 36 interposed between the bottom 13 of each cylinder 4 and the face 12 of the piston 3 could comprise a spring device tending to radially push the solid body 11, 21 or 35. These means could also include a differential piston of the same type as the piston 3.1, tending to move the body 11, 21 or 3 radially outwardly from the bearing; 5.
