Process for the production of bieyelo- (2.2.1) -2,5-heptadiene. The present invention relates to a process for the production of bicyclo (?. 2.1) - o, 5-heptadiene.
The Diels-Alder diene synthesis is well known and has been shown to be useful for the preparation of a large number of different compounds. Many types of dies which react with a wide variety of unsaturated compounds have been used for this purpose. In particular, the reaction of acyclic dienes with some acetylene hydrocarbons is known. Indes sen is the reaction of Cyelodienes such. B. Cvelopentadiene, and their derivatives with acetylenes have so far been little investigated.
It has been found that by allowing acetylene to act on C @ -clopentadiene in the manner of a Diels-Alder synthesis, bicyclo- (2.2.1) 2,5-heptadiene can easily be obtained.
The reaction between the acetylene and the cyclopentadiene is advantageously carried out at temperatures of 1.50-400 ° C. and under pressures which are between atmospheric pressure and about 17.5 kg / cm 2.
The reaction can be carried out in the presence or absence of a solvent. Suitable solvents are, for example, ketones, alcohols, hydrocarbons etc. with different boiling ranges, in particular ethanol, ethyl methyl ketone, heptane, benzene, xylene, polyalkylated naphthalene, the branded product Dowtherm, which consists of a mixture of diphenyl ether and diphenyl, etc.
The reaction temperatures and pressures chosen will be those at which decomposition and the resulting loss of reaction components and reaction product are prevented. It should be noted that acetylene is relatively sparingly soluble in almost all liquids at elevated temperatures, unless it is. a higher pressure is used and that acetylene decomposes explosively when subjected to elevated pressure and temperature at the same time. It is therefore advisable to carry out the reaction in a flowing vapor phase or mixed phase.
The following examples show how the process according to the invention can be carried out. Example 1: Cyclopentadiene and acetylene were passed through a hot reaction zone which was kept under pressure. The vapors emerging from the reaction zone were condensed and the Diels-Alder reaction product was separated off by fractionation. Table I below shows the results achieved at various temperatures, pressures, molar ratios and reaction times.

Example 2: Cvelopentadiene, acetylene and a commercial mixture of diphenyl ether and diphenyl as solvent were allowed to flow together through a heated reaction zone which was kept under pressure.
The vapors emerging from the reaction zone were condensed and the Diels-Alder reaction product by fractionation of the liquid obtained. separated .. In this experiment, the reaction zone consisted of a metal boat that was heated by means of a salt bath. At the beginning of the experiment, part of the space in the reaction zone was filled with the solvent mixture. A weight of solvent corresponding to the weight of the pumped-in Cyelopentadiene was allowed to flow continuously into the reaction zone together with the reactants.
The result obtained is summarized in Table II. Presumably, the yield will vary with the extent to which the process is carried out. In general, better conversions are to be expected in industrial execution than are obtained in laboratory tests.
Thus, in operational tests under conditions which were the same as in test no. 2 of Table I above, with the difference that a slightly higher ratio of acetylene to cyclopentadiene and a slightly longer reaction time were used, yields of the 1: 1 reaction product obtained in an amount of 60 to 65 percent by weight, calculated on the weight of the cyclopentadiene introduced.
The bicyclo- (2.2.1.) 2,5-heptadiene obtained according to the invention is useful as an intermediate for the production of insecticides, plasticizers, plastic materials, solvents and numerous other chemicals, which in turn can be used as such or as intermediates . It can also be used directly as an insecticide, solvent or plasticizer, as well as raw material for the manufacture of materials for the production of coatings and for the production of explosive substances.
It is also suitable as an intermediate product for carrying out the processes according to patent no. 281998 and patent no. 290803 of the same patent holder.
