angegeben.

Process for the preparation of ss-6,7.Epoxyhexachlortetracyclodode @ en. The present invention relates to a process for the production of a new substance which has a surprisingly high toxicity to insects and in particular those insects which are not attacked by the halogenated hydrocarbons and their derivatives used hitherto.
The Swiss patents 281998 and 290803 relate to processes for the production of polycyclic halogenated hydrocarbons, namely hexachlorotetracyclo- dodecadiene and 6,7-epoxyhexachlorotetrecyclo- dodecene, which not only have an unexpectedly high insecticidal activity, but also a surprisingly high level of effectiveness Have resistance to reagents,
which normally easily decompose the well-known organic halogenated insecticides.
The new, polycyclic, halogenated hydrocarbon produced by the process according to the present invention has, in addition to the usual properties of the above-mentioned compounds, new properties which enable this hydrocarbon to exterminate vermin, which is caused by many or most of the compounds of the class which of the present hydrocarbons belongs, is not attacked, and makes it particularly suitable and valuable.
The inventive method for the manufacture of the new substance, namely ss-6,7-epoxyhexachlortetracyclododecene, which has the following planar structural formula:
EMI0001.0021
is characterized in that ss-hexachlorotetracyclododecadiene is subjected to oxidation with a per compound. ss-6,7-epoxyhexachlortetracyclododecene is a white, crystalline body which melts at about 245 ° C with decomposition.
In recent years a. A large number of halogenated hydrocarbon or simple hydrocarbon derivatives have been found which are highly toxic to numerous species of insects. However, these substances are subject to certain restrictions which reduce their usability to a lesser or greater extent.
With the exception of the compounds described in the above-mentioned patents, all organic, halogen-containing insecticides known to date show a tendency to lose halogen and at the same time their insecticidal effectiveness.
In addition, all previously discovered halogenated hydrocarbon poisons, which are very effective against numerous types of insect pests, are of limited or low value for the extermination of numerous other, equally harmful insect species. This fact is not in itself particularly surprising, since there are a very large number of known insect species and there can be great differences between these species. It is therefore not surprising that there is no single insecticidal compound that can be used successfully against all insect species.
Somewhat less understandable is the fact that certain large classes of harmful insects are practically immune to all halogenated insecticides found so far, including the compounds described in the above-mentioned patents.
It has now been found that certain classes of insects, which so far are not four-eradicable by using halogenated hydrocarbons, are very sensitive to the effect of the new substance. Since these classes of insects have so far been relatively resistant to compounds of this general type, the fact that they are attacked by the new substance is both new and surprising.
This fact is even more surprising when one takes into account that the new substance is structurally very similar to the compound described in Swiss Patent No. 290803. It is actually a stereoisomer of the latter compound. Like the isomer mentioned, the new compound is very strong. insecticidal activity, but contains so firmly bound halogen atoms that it is stable under alkaline conditions, under which the older halogenated insecticidal substances lose halogen and at the same time lose their effectiveness.
The reaction product obtained when one mole of 1,2,3,4,7,7-hexachlorobicyclo- (2,2,1) -2,5-heptadiene is reacted with 1 mole of cyclopentadiene, or when 1 mol of hexachlorocyclopentadiene is reacted with 1 mol of bicyclo- (2,2,1) -2,5-heptadiene, has the following structural formula
EMI0002.0037
If the primary products are treated with a peracid,
this gives epoxidized new derivatives, which can be represented in a similar way by a flat structural formula:
EMI0002.0041
The planar structure I represents the two primary products obtained when 1 mole of hexachloro-cyclopentadiene is reacted with 1 mole of bicyclo- (2,2,1) -2,5-heptadiene, and when 1 mole of cyclopentadiene is reacted with 1 mole of 1,2,3,4,7,7-hexachlorobicyclo- (2,2,1) -2,
5-heptadiene is made to react. The structure I4 represents the fl-6,7-epoxyhexachlortetracyclodecene produced according to the invention as well as the 6,7-epoxyhexachlortetracyclododecene produced according to the process of Swiss Patent No. 290803 chemically different from each other.
In order to explain and explain the differences between the compounds that can be correctly represented by the upper level structural formula, it is therefore necessary to briefly discuss the stereochemical configurations of these compounds. Let it be a simple bicyeloheptene compound, such as B.
EMI0003.0003
taken as an example.
One can assume that carbon atoms 2, 3, 5 and 6 lie in the plane of the paper, while carbon atoms 1 and 4 are above this plane and carbon atom 7 is even higher than atoms 1 and 4 above this plane. The bonds connecting the atoms H and X and H and Y with the carbon atoms 2 and 3 are "then thought to be arranged above and below the plane of the paper.
The planar structure II thus (apart from the optical isomerism) corresponds to three stereoisomers which - as can be seen from the accompanying drawing - can be represented by three-dimensional figures [compare (a), (b) and (e)].
If X and Y are chlorine atoms, then, according to the most common nomenclature, the compound (a) is a Transdiehlor compound, (b) an exo-cis-dichloro compound and (e) an endo-cis-dichloro compound.
It is also generally believed that if members X and Y form part of a ring system containing no more than six atoms, the rings so linked must have either an exocis or an endo-cis configuration . A trans configuration is probably necessarily excluded.
If one examines the compound represented by the above formula I in more detail, one arrives at the conclusion that four theoretically possible stereoisomers can be assumed: 1. A compound in which the second six-membered ring is attached in the exo-cis position and in which the endo-methane bridge. in the second ring in a general one. Sinn is directed in the same direction as the endo-methane bridge in the first six-membered ring.
2. a connection in which the second six-membered ring is closed in the exo-cis position, but in which the second endo-methane bridge is directed in the opposite direction with respect to the first.
This can be represented three-dimensionally as in the accompanying drawing [compare (d) and (e)].
Compound (d) is assigned an exo-exo configuration, while rings A and B are assigned an exo configuration. It is also assumed that the compound (e) has an exo-endo configuration and that the ring A in connection (e) has an exo configuration and the ring B of the compound (e) has an endo configuration.
The two other connections represented by the planar structural formula I are the corresponding variants in which the second connected ring is in the endocis position. These connections can be three-dimensional, as shown with (f) and (g) in the accompanying drawing, as can be given.
An endo-exo configuration is therefore assigned to compound (f), while an endo configuration is assumed for ring A in connection (f) and an exo configuration is assumed for ring B in connection (f). In a similar manner, the connection (g) is assigned an endo-endo configuration, while an endo configuration is assumed for the two rings of the connection (g).
It is not known with certainty which of the configurations shown is attributable to the various connections present. It is assumed that the compound obtained by reacting 1 mol of hexachlorocyclicpentadiene with 1 mol of bicyclo- (2,2,1) -2,5-hep- tadiene has either the exo-exo configuration (d) or the endo -exo configuration (f).
In the following, the configuration obtained in this way is referred to as the <calpha configuration, while the series of the compound obtained in this way is referred to as the alpha series.
It is also assumed that in the reaction of cyclopentadiene with 1 mole of 1,2,3,4,7,7-hexacblorbicyclo- (2,2,1) - 2,5 -heptadiene the resulting compound either has the endo-endo configuration (g) or the exo endo configuration (e).
In the following, the configuration obtained by this second reaction method is therefore referred to as the beta configuration, while the series of compounds obtained in this way is referred to as the beta series. It is also assumed that if the first of these compounds (alpha) has the exo-exo configuration, the second of these compounds (beta) then has the endo-endo configuration,
while if the alpha compounds have the endo-exo configuration, the beta compounds then have the exo endo configuration.
It can be assumed that, when discussing the configuration, the spatial relationships that exist if the. falling compound is one with more than two bicycloheptane rings, have not yet been considered. It follows from the above, however, that the addition of 1 mol of a cyclopentadiene to 1 mol of a given condensed polycyclic compound can result in 4 stereoisomers.
Our current knowledge indicates that reactions of this type tend to proceed in such a way that stereochemically pure products arise which are predominantly (although not necessarily exclusively) determined by the reaction components. It follows from this that the subsequent addition of cyclopentadienes to the tetracyclic primary products will in reality only result in one of the four theoretically possible addition configurations.
Another important fact that must be taken into account is that these addition reactions between cyclopentadienes and the four (alpha, beta, etc.) primary stereoisomers of hexahalotetracyclododecadiene have practically the same course in each case. d. H.
the addition of a Cyelopentadiene to the double bond of a non-halogenated Bicycloheptenrin.gsystems. It therefore seems reasonable to assume that the stereochemical configuration in the vicinity of the additional condensation points will be the same for each of the four primary isomers.
The preparation of the ss-hexachlortetracyclo- dodecadiene used in the present process can, for. B. be carried out according to the method according to Sehweizer Patent No. 295916. The peroxidation can for example by means of a solution of Peressigsätlre in a ge suitable solvent, such as. B. benzene.
Example: ss-hexachlortetracyclododecadiene (ss-1,2,3, 4,10,10-hexachloro-1,4,4a, 5,8,8a-hexahydro-1,4, 5,8 -dimethano-naphthalene) (1.2 g, 0.033 '12o1) was dissolved in 50 em3 benzene, whereupon the solution was set with 15 g of 35 1 / o peracetic acid. The addition was made dropwise while stirring the solution. The reaction components were initially at room temperature.
The reaction was moderately exothermic. The reaction mixture was stirred overnight and then heated at 45 ° C. for about 1 hour. The reaction mixture was then subjected to steam distillation in order to remove excess peracetic acid, acetic acid and benzene. The solid residue obtained was extracted with diethyl ether, whereupon the Ätherlö solution was washed with water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The practically anhydrous solution obtained was placed on a water bath.
The residue remaining after evaporation of the ether was recrystallized from methanol. In this way 11.5 g of a white crystallized substance were obtained which melted at 245 ° C. with decomposition. Analysis: for 012118C160: C 37.860 / 0, H 2.11010, Cl 55.95%; Found: C 38.0%, H 2.19%, Cl 55.81 / 0.
The compound obtained in this way is ss-epoxyhexachlortetracyclodecene (ss 1,2,3,4,10,10,6,7-epoxy-1,4,4a, 5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro -1,4,5,8-dimethanonaphthalene), which has the following structural formula:

Although, for the sake of clarity, the stereochemistry of the new compound has been discussed in more detail in order to elucidate the structure of this material, the invention is of course not intended to be restricted by the above statements with regard to the reaction mechanisms, the stereochemical configurations or the structural theory.
As already mentioned, the new product has great practical value as an insecticide. It is completely resistant to alkalis in both aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. The new compound also shows a high degree of toxicity to numerous insect species. This can be seen in particular from the following statements.
Table II shows the toxicity of the new compound to the common house fly (Musca domestica), based on the toxicity of the new halogenated insecticide Chlordane, which is used as 100% for this purpose,
specified. The figures given were obtained using the Kearns test method (Kearns' modified Small Ellamber method of test, Soap and Sanitary Chemicals, May 1948, page 133).
The figures in Table II represent the relationship between the weight of chlordane required to achieve an LD ;; o and the weight of the tested compound required to achieve the same mortality.
The importance of these tests can be assessed more easily if Table I is used, in which the ratios are given for the organic halogenated insecticides commonly used, which were compared in similar tests with heptachlor as the standard substance.

Surprisingly, however, the new compound is most useful in areas that are different from those in which the earlier known members of this group of substances are most effective. Certain of the earlier. Known members of this group of sub stances such. B. α-5,6-epoxy-hexachlorotetra-. cyclododecene are effective against the Mexican bean beetle. However, this effectiveness is much less than the effectiveness of the after. present process manufactured product.
It has been found that the ss-6,7-epoxy-hexachlortetracyclododeene produced by the process according to the invention is 10 to 20 times as toxic as Rotenone to the Mexican bean beetle and its larvae. Rotenone is currently generally regarded as the standard substance for eradicating this insect.
Since this particular insect is resistant to the halogenated hydrocarbons normally used to kill numerous other noxious insect species, the fact that the new compound is effective is a particular surprise.
The resistance of the various aphid species to the action of the halogenated insect venom is even greater tide than that of the Mexican bean beetle: In fact, only three substances are currently known that are effective against the numerous varieties of this vermin, namely tetraethyl pyrophosphate or hexaethyl tetra- phosphate, parathion and nicotine.
Because of their high mammalian toxicity, the ease with which they are absorbed by the body, and the rapidity with which they act, the greatest care must be taken in handling these compounds, as they are dangerous. In addition, none of these compounds has a noticeable remnant effectiveness as an aphicide.
It has now been found that the new ss 6,7-hexachlortetracyclododecene is extremely effective against the aphis species. Tests have shown that .ss-6,7-epoxyhexachlorotetracyclododecene is more than 13 times as toxic to aphids as nicotine sulfate. That is also important. The fact that this new compound has a very high degree of remanent effectiveness.
Because of its physical form, its much lower absorbability after external administration on the mammal's body and the much lower speed of poisoning against mammals, the new compound is much less dangerous in use than parathion or the nicotine salts.
The new substance is soluble in all common organic solvents and can be used as an insect poison in all common ways. Thus, one can dissolve the substance in the carrier oils normally used (as has been done to obtain the data given in Table 1I) and the solutions obtained can be atomized or otherwise used in the usual manner.
The substance can also be combined with finely divided carrier substances in order to produce wettable and non-wettable insecticidal powdery products. It can be used in the presence of emulsifying agents together with water and with water and oils to obtain insecticidal emulsions.
The new substance can also be incorporated into aerosol mixtures and can generally be used either as the only insecticide - in an insecticidal mixture or in combination with other insecticides in order to obtain a combination of properties and other favorable characteristics.
Because of its unusual properties and great durability, the new compound is particularly well suited for a number of less common but highly desirable applications. It can be added to paint, varnishes, varnishes and polishing waxes which, after application, have surfaces with a high level of insecticidal activity. The new substance can be added to all types of paper products, either by suitable impregnation of the finished paper products or by incorporation during manufacture.
Similarly, the substance can be incorporated into adhesives, plasticizers, printing inks, chewing products, etc. to obtain finished products which are toxic to insects and which resist insect attack. The new substance can also be added to various types of plastic and plastic films in order to obtain packaging and wrapping materials that are even resistant to attack by insects and are able to protect the objects wrapped in them against such attack.
Because of its high resistance to the action of alkalis, the new substance can be added to whitewash and other surface treatment agents. The pachmann will recognize that there are numerous other similar uses for this substance.
It should be noted that the new substance, the ss-6,7-epoxy-hexachlortetracyclododeeen, is unusually toxic to rats. It can therefore be used to eradicate these vermin, and especially if lasting effectiveness is required for a long time. This material will prove particularly valuable. for the control of rodents in orchards where the occurrence of the field vole and similar rodents is a serious problem.
Applied to the soil or worked lightly into the surface layer of the soil, this material will not only serve to destroy the rodent pests, but also to eliminate harmful insects that are found on and below the surface of the earth.
The person skilled in the art will recognize that there are numerous other possible uses for the new substance obtained according to the invention in addition to those already mentioned. So it will be valuable as a plasticizer and as an adhesive for numerous types of resinous and polymeric materials. This compound is also suitable as a starting material and intermediate product for perfumes, medicines, fungicides and other organic compounds useful in industry and science.
