Water disinfection process and installation for carrying out the process. The present invention. relates to a water disinfection process, allowing the most polluted water to be purified quickly and with a remarkable margin of safety thanks to the. development under conditions of maximum efficiency of the powerful germicidal properties of ozone. This process is particularly suitable when it comes to rapidly purifying large masses of water through passage.
We have already proposed to. disinfect the water by means of ozone, but the best installations known today work under conditions such that a loss of at least 250 / e ozone occurs. The present invention aims in particular to remedy as much as possible to. this. disadvantage in ensuring. maximum use of the ozone supplied. In addition, the process makes it possible to shorten the time required for water treatment, while reducing the amount of ozone required.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that it injects it pressurized ozonated gas into the water which passes through a hydraulically closed ozonation chamber at the inlet and at the outlet, the undissolved part of the gas s' accumulating in the upper part of the.
ozonation chamber and forming a pressurized gaseous mass therein, part of this mass escaping from the ozonation chamber as soon as its. pressure exceeds a value depending on the pressure of the water entering and leaving the ozonation chamber, until the pressure equilibrium is re-established in said chamber.
A subject of the invention is also an installation for carrying out the aforementioned method; this installation is characterized in that it comprises a water supply pipe, an ozonation chamber, means for injecting ozonated gas under pressure into the ozonation chamber and an outlet pipe intended for to contain a water column serving, on the one hand, to hydraulically close the ozone chamber and, on the other hand, to regulate the pressure prevailing in this chamber.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, some embodiments of the installation for implementing the process according to the invention.
Figs. 1 to 4 respectively show a sectional elevation of four embodiments.
In the first example (fig. 7.), the raw water to be purified E enters the feed via the channel r1 into the. ozonation chamber B. The latter is subdivided into two compartments B1, B2 which we will call respectively diffusion compartment and disinfection compartment. Pressurized ozonated air is injected through diffusers d placed at the bottom of the diffusion compartment Bi in which the water moves in the vertical direction of the ash.
In the example shown, the ozonation chamber B comprises three partitions, namely a median partition pl_ separating the compartments Bi and B., a partition padja- cente to the channel A and a partition p3 placed towards the exit of the. chamber B. These partitions make it possible to direct the water current and to give the compartments suitable dimensions which may vary according to the nature of the water to be treated.
At the top of the ozonation chamber B forms a gaseous mass of pressurized ozonated air. The water is pushed out of the. chamber B from the bottom in an ascending channel (\ which serves primarily as a pressure regulator for chamber B. In addition, the water column contained in channel C serves as a sealing device for the gas , so that the chamber B is thus closed hydraulically at the inlet and the outlet. The channel C is followed by a descending channel D ending in a reservoir R.
The water begins to give up, in the upper part of channel C, the residual ozone still dissolved, and baffles f are provided in channel D to promote this desaturation. The latter is still activated by an air inlet 7c made in pipe D.
The continuous injection of ozonated air by the diffusers d tends to increase the volume of the gas 1I compressed in the upper part of the ozonation chamber B. From a given pressure, this gas can escape through the pipe a., and a valve V regulates this pass-e. The valve V can in some cases be omitted. The residual ozonated air passing.
through the a east line. immediately injected at b into the inlet channel -l where the water absorbs the remaining ozone, while the undissolved air mass is discharged through an opening c practiced at the top of the channel _1. The pressure of the gas in h is sufficient to allow its direct injection into the water.
On the other hand, the ozone recovered in the form of ozonated air in g, at the top of column C, must be sucked in and delivered by a pump P in order to be able to be injected in lz into the water supply channel A, more exactly in a derivation of this channel, not shown in the drawing. This latter method of recovery is not essential, however.
In the example that comes. to be described, the water to be purified must therefore pass through the. ozonation chamber B under a pressure which favors a rapid and more complete dissolution of the ozone and under conditions which then force this gas to remain closed until the water leaves said ozonation chamber. The rapid diffusion and dissolution of ozone take place in the diffusion compartment Bi, while in the adjacent compartment.
B. continues. very intensely and ends the sterilizing action of the dissolved ozone initiated in the compartment, B1. This prolongation of the germicidal action of ozone beyond the compartment. diffusion is very important because it allows to obtain a perfect disinfection with a minimum of ozone.
It should be noted that the undissolved gaseous mass J'1, formed mainly of air, escapes from the. ozonation chamber without being entrained with the treated water. If it wasn't. not the case, this gaseous mass would have the effect of expelling from the water most of the dissolved ozone, before. that this ozone has accomplished its sterilizing action. Due to the existence of the gaseous mass JI under pressure and. since this gas cannot be entrained with the treated water, the ozone dissolved in the latter does not have the possibility of leaving its dissolved state before leaving the ozonation chamber.
A retention valve, automatically controlled. by the level of the water in the ozonating chamber, can be provided at the outlet of this chamber, which makes it possible to modify the gas pressure in said chamber or to reduce the height of the water column C closing off the ozonation chamber.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 2 differs from the previous one only in that the ozonation chamber B com takes several pairs of diffusion and disinfection compartments. In the example shown at fi - @ .- 2, it i- a. three diffusion compartments B1, B3, B, and three disinfection components B: ,,, RI, Ba. The number of these pairs could be less or more than three. This embodiment is applicable when it comes to disinfecting particularly polluted water.
In the example of the. fig. 3, the water outlet channel forms a unit with the tank see R, key so that it is the latter which plays the key role of the disinfection compartment. A retention valve S, controlled automatically by the level of the water in the. ozonation chamber, est. provided at, the entrance to the reserve see R.
In the last embodiment provided (Fig. 4), the ozonation chamber B is constructed in the vertical direction, without partitions between the diffusion and disinfection compartments. These compartments B, and B. are thus superimposed; the diffusers d serving to inject the ozonated air are placed halfway up the.
ozonation chamber, at the bottom of the diffusion compartment B1. In this example, the 1T gas accumulated in the upper part of the ozonation chamber escapes into the atmosphere sphere through a reduction valve V and is therefore not recovered. At his. leaving the ozonation chamber, the water is sent to the pipe C which can. be the water distribution pipeline; a reservoir could also be provided.
Instead of ozonated air, another ozonated gas can be used, for example ozonated oxygen.
The means serving to inject the ozonated gas may be other than those indicated above (diffusers). Thus, one could also use Bunsen tubes which suck the ozonated gas and compress it also early in the water by intimately mixing gas and water.
