Variable gauge vehicle undercarriage. The present invention relates to a running gear for a vehicle, with variable spacing, and which can be used as a landing gear for a flying machine; it can be placed in two different positions of use, one of which is adapted to the requirements concerning the landing and take-off of the machine in order to ensure its stability, and the other of which is adapted for taxiing of the machine on the road.
When the machine is used as a road vehicle, its wheels must be kept inside the area occupied by the vehicle, while when the machine is used as a flying machine, such as a helicopter or autogyro, the wheels must be spaced from each other along a horizontal axis, so as to be located outside the area covered by the projection on the plane of the body of the vehicle, so as to provide a larger base for landing or take-off of the vehicle.
The undercarriage for a vehicle, with variable spacing, which is the subject of the invention, is characterized by at least one pair of wheels and actuating means making it possible to respectively cause the separation and the approximation, along a horizontal axis, of the wheels forming a pair.
The appended drawing shows, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment of the train which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial plan view of the rear axle of the vehicle, provided with a device for controlling the wheel spacing, arranged behind this axle.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the rear axle of a vehicle fitted with the wheel spacing control device, arranged in front of this axle.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the rear axle shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a partial view of a servo motor for controlling the spacing of a pair of wheels.
Fig. 5 is an alternative embodiment of the servomotor for controlling the spacing and bringing together of a pair of wheels.
Fig. 1 illustrates the rear half of the running gear of a road vehicle, the parts not shown being symmetrical and identical to the parts shown. In this figure, 1 denotes a booster intended to control the spacing and the approximation of the rear wheels 11, of which only one is shown. The cylinder of the booster is fixed by each of its ends to a shock absorber 10 carried by each wheel axle.
In fig. 1, the servomotor cylinder is mounted at the rear of the rear axle designated by the number 4, while, in fig. 2, the servomotor cylinder is mounted in front of the rear axle 4. In fig. 3, the booster cylinder is shown -mounted above the rear axle of the vehicle, but its operation remains the same, and consists in causing the separation or approximation of the pair of wheels.
The booster comprises a cylinder arranged horizontally between two shock absorbers 10 placed on each side of the vehicle. The cylinder 1 is divided by a wall 3 into two parts and in fact comprises two distinct cylindrical chambers A and B (fig. 4) in each of which is engaged a piston 2 carrying a piston rod comprising two parts C. and D of different diameters.
Part C of this piston rod and the cylinder chamber in which it is engaged have a locking device comprising at least a finger engaged in a longitudinal groove and preventing any relative angular displacement between the pin and the cylinder, but allowing relative axial displacements of the piston and the cylinder.
Intake and exhaust ports 6 are arranged so that, when a pressurized fluid is admitted to one of the sides of the pistons 2, the corresponding piston rods C and D are moved in opposite directions and tend to move the wheels away from each other, while when dii pressurized fluid is admitted to the opposite sides of the pistons 2, the wheels are returned toward each other. The piston rods C, D are connected to the shock absorbers 10, so that these are moved with the wheels on which they are mounted.
Referring to fig. 1 and 2, it can be seen that the rear axle is designed so that it adapts to the extensions and retractions of the booster. For this purpose, the usual motor shaft coming out of the differential housing c is connected to each rear wheel by means of automatically adjustable means comprising two universal joints 5 connected together by a sliding coupling device 7 preventing movement. angular between its driven and driving parts, but allowing variations in the spacing of the joints 5.
It goes without saying that when the servo motor 1 is used in conjunction with the front axle of the vehicle, similar sliding links are provided in the steering bar in order to allow automatic adjustment of its length, when the front wheels are. apart hearings close to each other.
If the vehicle fitted with the device described is a flying machine combined with a road vehicle, the rear wheels as well as the front wheels will, when the vehicle is used as a road vehicle, be located inside the area occupied by the road. projection on the plane of the body or the body of this vehicle, as is the case with modern automobiles.
On the other hand, when this vehicle is used as a flying machine and the wings are deployed, it is necessary to move aside these wheels as far as possible in order to ensure a sufficient base of support for the machine both for take-off and for landing. 'landing. Thanks to the device described, im such adjustment of the wheel spacing is possible.
It is easy to realize that after the aircraft has taken off, it is advisable to bring the wheels back to their spacing corresponding to their position for the road vehicle in order to bring the wheels back inside the area occupied by the standard body of the vehicle and thus reduce the resistance to advancement opposed by the air.
It should be noted that the wheels remain vertical regardless of their spacing. Thus, they are always able to receive landing shocks, even in the event that the servomotor for controlling the wheel spacing should not operate during landing.
In addition, it should be noted that the servo motor 1 in fact constitutes an additional front or rear axle increasing the rigidity of the vehicle and ensuring additional safety during landing.
The construction variant shown in FIG. 5 is generally identical to that described above, except with regard to the booster. In fact, according to this variant, the booster is constituted by an electric motor 12 mounted inside a tube 1 '. The frame 13 of this motor is connected by means of a device 4 screws and nut to a shaft 14 fixed on the internal end of the rod D. The whole is arranged in such a way that when the motor 12 is energized, the rotating part of the motor drives the rod D in a translational movement.
The electric motor 12 is reversible and small to rotate in one direction or the other, so that the wheels 11 can either be moved apart or brought closer to each other.
