Apparatus for sports timekeeping. During sports events, the task of the jury is often very difficult, if not impossible to carry out perfectly, because the arrivals of the riders follow one another. usually very quickly. The cinema, as we know, allows certain interesting and advantageous possibilities, and different types of apparatus have already been proposed; it has been thought, for example, to adapt a permitting optical device to a camera. add on the film the image of a watch on which you can read the exact time of a passage.
The present invention aims at timing sporting events with greatly increased precision and its object is an apparatus, characterized in that it comprises a camera the film of which advances in a uniform movement which can be adjusted in proportion to the speed of the competitors to be observed. , so that their image is sharp despite their movement, the camera having means for photographing only a narrow space encompassing the finish line and being combined with a time counter with rotating drums, illuminated so continues, but only allowing its figures to be seen at determined intervals, the image of these figures then being projected by means of an optical device on the edge of the film opposite the image of the competitors.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic view, tan say that FIG. 2 shows part of the developed film.
In these figures, the camera, of the Laws type, that is to say of a type in which the film moves in a continuous and uniform manner, presents a screen 1 with an adjustable slit, making it possible to locate the shot. of view on and around the finish line of the runners. This screen 1 is placed between the film 2 and the optical part 3 of the camera. At the top of screen 1, the slit is a little wider to allow the passage of light rays projecting the image of the digits of a time counter, as will be explained.
The counter itself comprises a series of four drums 4 such as those used in universally well known totalisers. These drums bear numerals indicating the hours, minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second, respectively. They each turn at a speed such that at each moment the reading taken along a line parallel to the common axis of the drums gives the exact time.
The drums 4 are surrounded by a thin, cylindrical casing 5 which rotates around them at the speed of five revolutions per second. This envelope has ten longitudinal slits distributed uniformly over its periphery, slits to. through which we can see the digits and the dashes of the drums 4 corresponding to every even hundredths of a second. A second series of slits, shorter, is inserted exactly. between the first slits and only shows lines corresponding to odd hundredths of a second.
A group of lamps 6, combined with condensers 7, projects onto the envelope 5 a powerful and continuous light beam.
Envelope 5 is matt black varnished. while 4 drums are colored white with black engraved numbers. When the drums 4 and the casing 5 respectively turn at the required speed, every hundredth of a second, one of the long slits or one of the small slits discovers in the light field either the complete set of the digits of a hundredth even, or the line corresponding to one hundredth im even.
The continuous projection on the film 2 by the optical device 8 to 11 causes each passage of the digits in front of one of the slits their impression on the film 2.
The width of the slots and their rotational speed are combined so that each digit is visible for 11750 of a second. This very short exposure time allows a clear impression on the film, including. the speed is relatively low The counter 4, 5 can have its digits reset to zero before a race, by means of the button 12. The counter is controlled by a motor 13, the speed of which is precisely regulated by means of an electronic device quartz (not shown). A clutch 14, interposed between the engine 1.3 and the counter 4, 5 makes it possible to start the counter at will automatically or not. To this end, an electrical device comprising an electromagnet 15 and an armature 16 enables the clutch 14 to be controlled remotely.
The apparatus which has just been described. works as follows in a sporting event: The apparatus is securely attached, with the finish line as the line of sight.
Motor 13 is started shortly before the start of the race. The control 15, 16 of the clutch 14 has been previously connected electrically to the signaling device giving the start (gun or other). The start signal causes the clutch of the counter 4, 5 which starts from zero. From this. instant. every hundredth of a second, is. projected on film 2 the image of the figures and lines indicating the time elapsed since the moment of departure, or only. dashes for even hundredths of a second.
It suffices, shortly before the finish, to set the film 2 in motion, the speed of which is adjusted in proportion to that of the runners, so that their image moves at the same speed as the film itself. From this moment, the figures giving. the time elapsed since departure are recorded on the film strip facing the. screen slit 1. As the camera has been pointed exactly at the finish line, the image of the competitors is printed only when they arrive at the said line.
Once the finish is complete, it suffices to develop, with the known ultra-rapid means, the. used part of the film and draw a line. transverse on the film from the chest of each of the runners - according to international sporting rules - to be able to see the corresponding exact time on the edge of the film. (see fig. 2). If it is a horse race, we will take the muzzle and, from case to case, we will adopt the same principle, following the rules established for each type of competitor.
