Process for the production of sheet metal containers and equipment for carrying out the same. In sheet metal containers such as cans, canned food cans, etc., the ends of a sheet metal abutting one another are usually connected to one another by bending over, hooking into one another and pressing the sheet metal edges together. By such interlocking, bottoms and lids can be connected with folded jackets, the latter can have a round, oval or angular shape. For better sealing, the fold seam is usually soldered or covered with a layer of lacquer.
However, such folded connections have the disadvantage that they often leak, be it due to inadequate manufacture or internal and external influences, as a result of which the content of the container in question leaks out or suffers damage.
The present invention now relates to a method for producing sheet metal containers with a seam connection and a device for carrying out the same. According to the method according to the invention, the folding of the parts of the container to be folded is vorgenom men around a sealant, the latter being made to adhere to the sheet metal by heating.
The device for carrying out this method is characterized in that a feed and a cutting device for the sealing means are provided on a press for the production of folded joints and that at least one pressing tool has a heating device.
In the drawing, some Falzverbin connections to explain examples of the inventive method and example, embodiments of devices for the practice of these methods are shown schematically table. 1 to 5 show various fold connections, FIG. 6 a side elevation of a fold press, FIG. 7 an end view of FIG. 6, FIGS. 8 to 10 a device for producing bottom fold connections, FIG. 11 a view of a press for pressing on the sealing tape,
FIG. 12 shows a side view of the upper and lower part of the press according to FIG. 11 and FIG. 13 shows a wall sheet metal part of a container as obtained after an operation carried out on the press according to FIG. According to FIG. 1, the sheet metal ends 1 form.
and 2 a folded seam in which a sealing agent is pressed. The latter consists for example of rubber, synthetic rubber, thermoplastic plastic, etc. and preferably has a tape shape. on. To. 2, the sheet metal edges can also be bent twice, bent into an outer fold according to FIG. 3, into an inner fold according to FIG. 4 or into a standing fold according to FIG. 5 for attaching a bottom, in all of these figures for the corresponding parts the same reference symbols are used.
For the folding press according to the Figs. 6 and 7, a slide 5 is mounted longitudinally displaceable bar on the plunger 4, which is ben from an eccentric shaft, not shown, via a rod 6. The lower end of the slide 5 is designed as a folding rail 7, to which a resilient stop 8 is attached, wel cher when the two sheet ends to be folded 9 and 10 is placed on the sheet end 10. Below the ram 4 a hollow mandrel 11 is provided which carries a second folding rail 12 which is supported against an inner, rotatable mandrel 13. On the left side of the press (FIG. 7) a supply roll 14 for a sealing tape 15 is provided.
On the ram 4 there is an upper cutting edge 16 and on the hollow mandrel 11 a lower cutting edge 17 of a cutting device for severing the sealing tape 15 is present.
The production of a seam connection now proceeds as follows: The two sheet metal ends 9 and 10 are, as shown in FIG. 6, introduced into the press. Here on from the supply roll 14, the log device tape 15 is pulled over the sheet metal end 9 and so far until it protrudes very little beyond the right end of the sheet (Fig. 7).
When the press is switched on, the folding rail 7 is first moved downwards, where it bends the sheet metal ends around the edge of the folding rail 12 inwards or outwards and at the same time fits into one another. At the same time, the mandrel 13 rotates so far that a recess 18 comes under the lower folding rail 12 so that they can go back and avoid the pressure of a ram rail 19. The fold is then pressed together.
The plunger 4 is heated, for example because an electrical heating coil is provided in its interior. The upper end of the sheet metal 10 is heated during pressing so that the sealing tape adheres to the sheet metal during the pressing process. Through the cutting device, the sealing tape is automatically cut abge with each folding process.
The folding process can also be carried out in such a way that, on a press with a heated ram, sealing tape feed device and cutting device, the sealing tape is first pressed onto one of the sheet metal ends and at the same time cut to the correct length, whereupon the sheet metal is also the pressed-on sealing tape is first folded. According to FIGS. 11 and 12, such a device has a ram 26 which is equipped with an exchangeable pressure rail 27.
This plunger has a heating winding in its interior, which can be connected to an electrical network via connecting conductors 28. Opposite the ram 26, a press table 29 is provided, on the right side of which a stop rail 30 with a ver adjustable stop 31 is rigidly arranged. A supply roll 32 for the sealing tape is again provided on the left-hand side of the press. A punch 33 is arranged on the right-hand side of the ram 26 and works together with a die 34 arranged on the press table 29. from Fig. 12, the cross-sectional shape of the pressure rail 27 can be seen.
Compared to the pressure rail, the press table 29 has a corresponding section 35. The press is attached to a tuss block 36. On the sheet metal part of a container, as it is obtained after the operation on the press, the corners 37, 38 are punched out by the punch 33, and a piece of sealing tape 40 is fixed along the edge 39 During the production of these sheet metal wall parts, the sheet metal piece is inserted into the press with the edge 39 first, in such a way that the punch 33 punches out the right corner 38 when it goes down. The sealing tape is then drawn over the sheet metal.
When the heated plunger 26 goes down, the sealing tape is firmly against it. the piece of sheet metal is pressed so that it sticks to it, and the right corner 38 is punched out. Then the piece of sheet metal is moved to the right on the stop rail 30 until it hits the stop 31. The sealing tape stuck to it is of course pulled along with it. The next sheet is now inserted into the press in such a way that the sealing tape that has already been pulled out comes to rest on the sheet. The two sheets are now on the press so that when the ram 26 goes down again, the left corner 37 of the first sheet and at the same time the right corner 38 of the second sheet are punched out. The sealing tape resting on the sheets is of course also cut through at the same time.
The process described is repeated continuously depending on the number of sheets to be prepared. Since the sealing tape once grasped does not need to be specially tightened every time, the performance of this device is relatively high. The punching out of the wall sheet metal corners 37, 38 prevents that in the subsequent folding operations of the wall sheet metal and the floor to be attached to it, which take place on special machines, an unacceptably large amount of material occurs at the relevant points.
The folding of the bases 21 of round, oval or angular sheet metal containers takes place in the manner shown in FIGS. 8 to 10 by rolling them up. The bottom 21 stiffened by an inner groove 20 against warping is inserted into a container wall tril 22 which is prepared according to the Ver just described and is then closed and held there by a punch 23. As can be seen, the bottom flange is somewhat wider than the wall part flange, so that it first rolls up and gradually takes the wall part flange with it when a roller 24 approaches, as shown in FIG.
According to FIG. 10, the thus obtained round fold is then compressed by means of a smooth pressure roller 25. During this rolling process, the sealing tape is rolled into the folded seam and pressed into place. The press used for this is in turn provided with a sealing tape supply roll and a cutting device.
A sheet metal container produced in the manner described has the advantage that its folded joints are very tight. The latter are completely insensitive to bumps and bending, since the flexible sealing tape fills the inside of the folded seam over and over again after a load and prevents the seam from leaking. Only an insignificant increase in the amount of time is required for the production of the seam connection, since the insertion and pressing of the sealing tape and the heating process can take place very quickly.
