Thermostatic control organ.
The invention relates to a thermostatic control member.
Its object is to obtain such a member of the bimetal type, one of the metal elements of which is constituted by an alloy having a high tenacity and a high elastic limit, combined with a high coefficient of linear expansion.
The control member which is the subject of the present invention comprises metallic elements having different expansion coefficients and is characterized in that one of said metallic elements consists of an alloy composed of 50 to 90 I / o of manganese, from 3 to 30 "/ o of nickel and from 2 to 25 / a of copper.
By way of example, a number of embodiments of the invention have been described below with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The figure is a ternary manganese-euper-nickel diagram, on which a certain number of curves have been drawn corresponding to constant values of the coefficient of linear expansion of the alloys.
Although the manganese, nickel and copper alloys defined above can be used without heat treatment to achieve the object of the present invention, those shown in the diagram have undergone quenching from 900 C and subsequent hardening. . The expansion coefficients of these hardened and cold worked alloys are not significantly affected by subsequent heat treatment.
In the table below, the holder indicates the coefficients of linear expansion of some characteristic alloys, in the quenched and cold worked state and also after tempering at 450 C. In this particular case, the measurements were made between the temperature ordinary and 100 C.

In addition to the high coefficient of linear expansion characterized by the values indicated above, these alloys possess other valuable properties which make them useful for the manufacture of objects where high coefficients of expansion are required.
The holder noted that there was a relation of approximate proportionality between the electrical resistance and the coefficient of linear expansion of these alloys; he found, for example, that alloys having a resistivity between 170 and 200. 106 ohms / cmS exhibit a linear expansion coefficient exceeding 20. 10-6 cm / cm / degree C, and that alloys having a resistivity less than 150. 104 ohmslem3, have a coefficient of expansion of approximately
15. 10-6 cm / cm / degree C.
A high resistivity, combined with a high coefficient of expansion, is very useful in certain types of electrical apparatus where the expansion of a thermostatic control member heated by the passage of an electric current is used.
The licensee also found that alloys of manganese, nickel and copper have a relatively low coefficient of variation of resistivity with temperature. This coefficient is particularly low in alloys having a coefficient of linear expansion of approximately
15. 10-6 cm / cm / degree C and in those where the latter coefficient exceeds 20. 10-6 cm / cm / degree C.
All of these alloys have a relatively high modulus of elasticity; many of them have a modulus of elasticity exceeding 14000 kg / mm2, i.e. falling within the range of modulus of elasticity of steels. These alloys also have a high resistance to fatigue. These diverse properties combined with high coefficients of linear expansion make these alloys particularly useful in the manufacture of bimetallic tapes for temperature control. It is important that such tapes exhibit not only a high coefficient of linear expansion, but also a high limit and modulus of elasticity.
A high damping factor is valuable also for materials intended for this use, since it can thus avoid the rebound of the electrical contacts which is frequently caused by the use of such tapes.
By way of example, reference may be made to bimetallic tapes sensitive to temperature variations. A typical type of sliver is that consisting of a low expansion element, formed of a high nickel alloy such as nickel-iron alloy containing 36% of nickel, combined with a high expansion element such as brass, copper or certain alloys of nickel, chromium and iron.
Using the same high nickel alloy (6iL / o iron, 36 ouzo nickel), which has a low coefficient of linear expansion, and an alloy composed of about 72 / o manganese, about 10 / o of nickel and about 18 (t of copper, which has a coefficient of linear expansion close to or greater than 25 106 em / em / degree C, we can obtain about a double displacement, for a variation of one to a degree, of that obtained with a ribbon of the usual type above. One can also use ordinary steel in combination with one of the alloys described in the present patent and obtain considerable advantages.
The low expansion element is preferably a 36 / o nickel nickel-iron alloy or any other iron-nickel alloy containing more than 33 / o and even more than 36 "/ o nickel; this element can also be of any metal or alloy, examples of which are given in Reginald S. Dean patents 947065 and 1991438 filed in the USA By making bimetallic bands, they can be welded, melted , solder them or treat them in any other way consistent with usual practice.
Although the proprietor has mentioned, by way of example, bimetallic tapes, it is obvious that such members can comprise more than two blades or that the temperature sensitive device can take the form of known mechanical devices, such as than a bar inside a. tube. Generally speaking, the present invention is applicable to thermostatic devices where the alloys of manganese, nickel and copper form the high expansion element of such a device which uses a difference in thermal expansion of two or more materials.
The alloys which make it possible to obtain the desired result include those composed of 3 to 26% nickel, 2 to 25% copper and 67% to 80% manganese. Excellent properties include alloys containing 8 to 20 I / o nickel, 7 to 19 O / o copper, the remainder being manganese, especially electrolytic manganese of high purity. Particularly advantageous alloys are those which are composed of 70 to 75 "/ o of manganese, of 8 to 15" / o of nickel and 15 to 90 / o of copper.
One alloy of particular interest is an alloy of about 72 ouzo manganese, about 10% nickel and about IS O / 0 copper, particularly when prepared from very pure metals, preferably electrolytic metals.
Electrolytic manganese at 99 / o or better at 99.9 / o is in fact particularly suitable for the preparation of the high-expansion alloys used in the control member according to the invention.
Finally, two other groups of compositions may be of interest; these are, on the one hand, those which contain 50 to 90% of manganese, 4 to 20 ouzo of nickel and as a complement of copper in the minimum proportion of 5 / o and, on the other hand, those which contain 60 to 85 O / o of manganese, 5 to 30 ouzo of nickel and as complement of copper in the minimum proportion of 7 / o.
