Process for preparing carbon pastes which can be used for making electrodes. Agglomerated carbon current feed electrodes are used in industry and in particular in thermo-thermal or electrolytic manufacturing. The internal linings of towers and electrolysis cells are sometimes also made from agglomerated carbon.
These carbon a --- farers are made to from pastes composed of carbon dust mixed with a binder, then shaped by molding. Certain agglomerates are fired in special ovens before their use in electrothermal manufacturing or in electrolysis cells, sometimes even this firing is pushed to the graphitation of the agglomerate. II. </ B> it also happens that the carbon agglomerates are fired in the electrothermal furnace or the electrolysis cell during its operation,
as for example the continuous electrodes But, what S5derberg say * their use, the quality of the agglomerates depends essentially on the quality of the carbon pastes which were used in to prepare them.
It is known that in addition to the choice of the -ranalometric constitution of the carbonaceous product and of the type of binder, the complete wetting of the surface of the grains of the carbonaceous product, coming into contact with the binder -used, is important for obtain to from these pastes electrodes having the best properties. It is only when the grains are wetted completely by the binder that one arrives to the most intimate bond in the dough and that the mechanical losses which occur can thus be avoided,
to use, with pastes having insufficient binding. It is also known that, in order to obtain as good a wetting as possible of the dry carbonaceous material by the binder, the carbonaceous material (which is generally constituted by mixtures of grains of different sizes) is introduced entirely into a mixer, then heated to a determined temperature, the binder is then introduced and the mixing operation is carried out, prolonging it until a mass is obtained homogeneous.
This method, which is universally adopted, has a number of drawbacks.
The finer grains together with the binder give a stable suspension, which obeys the laws of non-homogeneous liquids, a suspension in which the fine grains constitute the dispersed phase. A as the concentration of fines increases in the suspension, the viscosity of the latter also increases, so that, for an appropriate concentration of fines in the suspension, the viscosity of the suspension is a multiple of that of the pitch.
In the operation of mixing materials because they are good, having different grain sizes, with the binder, the suspension of fines in the binder reaches such a high viscosity that it can no longer wet the total surface of the grains and that it can only partially or not at all fill the pores. A this is in addition to the fact that the pores of the grains are filled in advance by the fine grains, which prevents the penetration of the pitch yes of the fine-pitch suspension. This threshold can be a cause of the formation, in the mass, of clusters of grains which are not at all, wet.
Such a paste does not present as intimate a bond as possible and will not give, after baking, assembled pieces having the best properties. binds incomplete wetting of the grain surfaces, or the presence of grains which are not wetted at all, causes losses which are observed when using electrodes made from such masses, losses known as coal dust formation.
The present invention makes it possible to avoid these drawbacks. The process of manufacturing carbon pastes which milk the object is characterized in that one separates a material because it is good into two fractions, one coarser and the other finer, one first mixes a part a-Li minus the binder with the coarser fraction, operating in such a way that all the grains are well wetted by this binder, the fraction of the finest carbonaceous material is then added and one continues to mix it until 'to obtain a homogeneous mass.
The carbonaceous material used can vary depending on the quality of pulp that is desired, the petroleum coke and the pitch coke, which are used to manufacture the high purity electrodes, give, after grinding, grains whose pores can reach relatively large dimensions, for example 0.3 mm and even more. When making carbon paste with these cokes by the process according to the invention, the separation of the dust into two fractions is carried out so that the smallest grains of the coarse fraction have the same size as the pores. of the largest grains.
On the contrary, if metallurgical coke or anthracite is used as carbonaceous material, which gives, after grinding, grains whose pores are very small, the dust is separated into two fractions of fu-on that the smallest grains of the coarse fraction have a dimension of 0.2 mm; because when this minimum limit is exceeded, the suspension, which forms with the grains during the mixing operation, has a viscosity such that it would not ensure complete wetting of the grains.
The fines added afterwards saturate the binder forming a suspension, and there is thus produced a paste in which the pores of the grains and the spaces between the grains are completely filled and in which the surface of all the grains is completely wet. lée. In this way, a paste is obtained which is as intimately bound as possible and having the most regular structure possible, which gives, after baking, a molded part having the optimum properties.
The coarse fraction of the carbon dust can also be wetted, first, with only a part of the necessary amount of binder, the rest of the binder then being added with the finer dust fraction. The binder can be added in the liquid state; the mixing is then faster, but we can also add it to the solid state; this is sometimes the case, for example, for dry pitch; the wetting of the grains can only be carried out after fluidization of the pitch by the heat.
In obtaining a paste for electrodes, using the process according to the invention, it is found that, in order to obtain a well-fluid paste, it is usually necessary to add 1 to < B> 3 1 / o more binder (eg pitch) than when operating by the usual method of simultaneous mixing of all the grains with the binder.
It can only be explained by the fact that, when we treat all the grains by the binder in the usual way (by e -.,. Embed the pitch), the total surface area of all the grains n 'is not wetted by the binder, whereas it is much better wetted in the process according to the invention.
