A method of forming a one-piece helical fin on a solid tube, and apparatus for carrying out this method. The present invention relates to a process for forming a helical fin in one piece on a plain tube, this fin having a small pitch relative to its radial height. Its purpose is to avoid any appreciable friction on the fin being formed and any appreciable bending thereof during the formation, which bending could have a detrimental effect by hardening the material and reducing its ductility or by overloading it. in another way this matter.
According to the method which is the subject of the invention, the material is moved from the outer surface of a tubular blank in a generally radial outward direction by exerting pressure in a radial inward direction on portions of the blank arranged on the same helix and spaced apart axially, and said radial displacement of the material is effected without subjecting this material to bending in the direction of the axis of the tube.
The subject of the invention is also an apparatus for carrying out the method specified above. This apparatus is characterized in that it comprises at least one roller having axially spaced annular parts and of which.
the opposite faces are formed by surfaces of revolution, means for supporting said roller mounted rotatably about an axis having, relative to the axis of said tubular blank, an obliquity corresponding to the angle of the tangent to the 'propeller according to which it is desired to form a fin on this blank, this roller being supported in a position such that said annular parts apply pressure on said blank, so as to move material from this blank outward into spaces formed between the adjacent annular parts of this roller, said surfaces of revolution having a convexity such that said annular parts can.
enter the spaces formed between the adjacent turns of the helical fin and exit these spaces without causing bending of the fin being formed.
The drawing represents, at. by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus and. illustrates an implementation of the method which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a cross section, partially schematic, of a tube blank and of said embodiment of the apparatus.
Fig. \? is a partial section, according to 92-2 of the. fig. 1, showing one of the rollers of the. fig. 1 forming soot fin on the blank.
Fig. 3 is. an enlarged partial section, showing part of one of the rolls cooperating with the blank.
Fig. 4 is a partial cross section, greatly enlarged, showing. one of the parts of the roller forming a fin on the blank. Fig. 5 is a section on 5-5 of the fi ,. 4, and fig. 6 is an enlarged section, according to 6-6 of the fi-. 5.
In the present state of the art, two types of methods and apparatus are used to form a one-piece helical fin on a solid tube. According to one of these methods tz-pes, the outer portion of the said tube wall is. notched to form a helical groove and the material between the adjacent turns of the groove is compressed axially to reduce its thickness and move this material radially outward.
In carrying out this process, the metal is subjected to considerable work and can harden in such a way that the tube is. damaged, especially when forming a fin of significant height. According to the other type of process which is the subject of Swiss patent N 273753, a tubular blank is brought into engagement with several shaping rollers mounted rotatably, their respective axes extending. in the general direction of the axis of the tubular blank and being equi spaced from each other around the tubular blank.
The axis of each of the rollers forms with the axis of the tubular blank a left angle such that the rollers move around the blank in a helical path corresponding to the angle of the tangent to the helix of the fin in front. be formed on the blank.
Each roller comprises several axially spaced annular portions, arranged to exert pressure in a generally radial inward direction on peripheral portions of the blank arranged on the same helix and axially spaced apart, pressure of sufficient intensity to release placing the material from the peripheral portion of the tubular blank and for upsetting the displaced material outwardly, into the spaces or grooves between the annular portions of the axially spaced rollers, to form a helical fin .
This fin is shaped by said roller surfaces forming the opposite sides of the space or groove into which the material is forced, so as to. give this fin the desired axial section. It has heretofore been key common practice to give the surfaces of such rollers conical shapes, of substantially rectilinear radial profile from the base to the periphery of the fin.
However, the helical surface of the fin thus obtained does not correspond to the surface (the revolution of the roller, and consequently the latter tends to deform the fin by causing it to bend in the direction of the axis of the tube when It rolls into the space between two adjacent fins and when it comes out of this space Simultaneously, the roller exerts on the fin a friction which tends to harden the material of which it is made.
The method and apparatus specified above obviate this disadvantage by shaping the discharge material by means of surfaces of revolution which correspond to the helical surface of the fin produced from this material. This requires a modification of the radial profile of said surface of revolution, which is. more rectilinear, but takes a convex curved shape such that no portion of the surface of the roller intended to forge the fin does not urge the latter to bend during its. continuous rotation.
Therefore, the rib thus formed is not subjected to sufficient hardening work to damage it, as is the case when using for its formation rollers, including. surfaces present. shapes which are not suited to the shape of this fin.
A tubular blank 10 is suitably supported by a mandrel 9 and has a helical fin 11, formed on this blank by the action of rollers 12. 13 and 14. The method and apparatus for forming this fin are generally the same as those who have. been mentioned above and which are the subject of the cited patent, and can be described briefly as follows: The rollers 12, 13 and 14 are of practically identical construction and they are arranged around the periphery of the blank, spaced apart preferably 120.
Each roller comprises several annular parts each constituted by a separate disc pierced in its center to receive a shaft 15, and comprising a keyed hub out fixed in another way on the shaft 1>, these discs being juxtaposed to each other . The axes of the shafts 15, that is to say the axes (the rollers, cross the axis of the blank 10 and form with this an angle such that they, e move around (the this blank according to a trajectory helical corresponding generally to the angle of the helix of the vane to be formed on the blank.
The construction is arranged so that the discs or annular parts of the respective rollers all follow exactly the same path and cooperate to form a continuous helical fin on the peripheral surface of the blank (as will be described later). In practice, the shafts 15 are supported by respective oscillating arms 16 for moving the rollers in the direction of the axis of the blank and in the opposite direction. In the case considered here, the shafts are driven and a suitable driving device (not shown) is connected for this purpose to the oscillating shafts.
The number of discs in each roll can vary widely. However, to fix ideas, each roller shown comprises seven discs designated in FIG. 2 by the numerals 17 to 23. The opposite sides of the peripheral portions of the discs are profiled in the manner which will be described more fully below, to form spaces or grooves 24 between the adjacent discs. These peripheral parts also gradually and slightly increase in width, from the first disc 17 to the last disc 23, for example by 0.1 mm, whereby the widths of the grooves 24 between the discs decrease by corresponding way.
These dimensions will obviously vary a lot depending on the type of finned tube one wishes to form.
After a tubular blank 10 has been placed on the mandrel 9, the shafts 15 with. their rollers are moved inwards, towards the periphery (the blank, and are locked in their extreme internal positions, shown in Fig. 1, by means of suitable means not shown. from the angular relationship between the axes of the rollers 12, 13, 14 and the axis of the tube 10, the discs of the rollers progressively penetrate the surface of the blank.
As a result of the frictional contact between the rotating discs and the surface of the blank, the latter rotates and advances axially, causing the rollers to follow a helical path around the axis of the blank. It has been said above that the rollers are arranged so that they all follow the same path and current practice has shown that this characteristic of the apparatus is made easier to obtain if the diameter of the discs is gradually increased. of each roll, from the first disc 17 to the last disc 23.
The dif ference between the diameters of the first two or three discs of each roll is preferably a little larger than the difference between the diameters of the remaining discs, in order to facilitate the penetration of the first discs into the surface of the blank. ehe 10.
In all cases, the construction is such that the discs of the rollers exert pressure in a general radial direction inwardly on peripheral portions of the blank arranged on the same helix and axially spaced apart, and lower sufficiently. the material of which the blank is formed against the mandrel 9 to move this material first axially, then radially outwards in the grooves 24 between the adjacent discs of the rollers.
Although the shape of the fin 11 is generally determined by the radial profile of the surfaces 26 forming the opposite sides of the grooves 24, the axial section of the fin does not conform exactly to the cross section of the grooves 24. , as the empty spaces 25 shown in FIG. 3. The radial section of the fin shown and whose thickness decreases towards the periphery is determined by the axial spaces formed between the respective peripheral parts of the successive discs, the peripheral part of the blade being extruded through. an axial space narrower than that through which the adjacent part of this fin is extruded, and so on.
The side surfaces 26 do not have a rectilinear radial profile from the base to the periphery of the fin, as was the case in the prior practice, but on the contrary a substantially circular profile. In other words, these surfaces are. profiled by grinding or in any other way, so that the discs penetrate by rolling into the helical space formed between the adjacent turns of the fin and come out of this space without subjecting the latter to a bending force in the direction of the axis of the tube and without acting on the material so that the latter becomes fragile or is otherwise affected. There is obviously a contact between the shaping discs and the material forming the fin 11.
Figs. 4 and 5 show a typical swimming disc engaged with the fin, and it should be noted that the spheroidal surface 26 on one side of the disc touches the fin at 27, above the axis of the blank. 10, and that the spheroidal surface on the opposite side of the disc touches the blade at 28, below the axis of the blank.
Thus, regardless of the diameter of the fin to be formed, the rollers do not produce excessive hardening of the upsetting material during shaping of the fin, but merely serve, in fact, to guide the re-crushed material towards it. outside, even in the grooves 24. Consequently, a finned tube, the fin of which has a sufficient radial height for a ratio to result. exterior areas to interior areas of 10 to 1 or more can easily be achieved, without danger of adversely hardening the metal forming the fin. One of the main causes of the production of cracks or blisters in the tube during its use is thus eliminated.
Attention should also be drawn to the fact that although the spaces or grooves 24 gradually decrease in width from the first groove formed between the adjacent discs 17 and 18 to the last groove formed between the adjacent discs 22 and 23, however, no detrimental axial compression of the displaced material occurs. Thus, the density of the material forming the blade only slightly exceeds 1a. normal density of the blank material, before the fin is formed.
