Figs. 7 to 12 are sectional views of the starting regulator of the embodiment of FIG. 5a, in different operating positions.
Referring first to FIG. 1 of the drawing, the free-piston internal combustion machine, which is two-stroke and compression ignition, comprises a common internal combustion engine cylinder 101, two compressor cylinders 102 aligned with the combustion cylinder at each end of that cylinder. here, and two accumulator cylinders 103 aligned with the compressor cylinders and arranged at the outer ends thereof.
Two free pistons, each formed by a motor element 104, a compressor element 105 and an accumulator element 106, move in a reciprocating movement symmetrically in these cylinders, synchronizing it. tion between them being effected by means of connecting rods 107 and a balance 108 intended only for synchronization and so does not transmit significant forces.
Air is supplied by the inlet manifolds 14 and suction valves 12, loaded by springs (only one of which is shown for each side), to the compression cylinders 102, the inner sides of which are opened to the atmosphere by lights 102a. Compressed air is supplied by the compressor cylinders 102 through discharge valves 13, loaded by springs (only one of which is, shown for each side) and transfer lines 15 to chamber 121 surrounding the cylinder. combustion valve 101, in which it is discharged as soon as the ports 101a are discovered by the driving element 104 of the free right piston.
When the pistons are at internal dead center or near it, fuel is injected into the combustion cylinder 101 by a fuel pump 110 through the tubes 17, the distributor 18, the tubes 19 and the injectors 109. When the free pistons have moved far enough outward that the left-hand drive unit 104 de-covers the exhaust ports 101b, the exhaust gases and compressed air passing cylinder 101 through the ports 101a and 101b are discharged by the. pipe 16 to a gas turbine (not shown), and ser wind of working fluid for this machine.
The fuel pump 110 is regulated by the adjustment member 110a and actuated by a cam 111 which sorrel under the action of a lever 20 connected by a connecting rod 21 to the connecting rod 107 of the synchronization mechanism.
An other cam 1, the purpose of which will be described later, is also put into oscillation by the synchronization mechanism, as is a lever 108a which actuates, through a connecting rod 28, a distributor 37 to drawer pistons shown at the bottom of fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale, separately in fig. 3 of the drawing.
A cylinder 25 of a device for moving the free pistons, used to bring the free pistons to their starting position, is arranged in the housing 121 which turns the combustion cylinder 101, so that the free end of the rod of the udder 24 in this cylinder can bear against a stop surface 105a of one of the compressor elements 105 free pistons to move the latter into the appropriate position at start-up. A spring 47 tends to return the piston 24 to its cylinder 25.
Pressure relief valves 27, loaded by springs, are arranged in each of the accumulator cylinders 103 which are further opened to the atmosphere by openings 103a each time the elements 106 approach their internal dead center position. The valves 27 can be opened against the action of their springs by a pressure of liquid arriving through the pipes 26 and acting on the pistons which are integral with the valves.
Compressed air can be supplied to the accumulator cylinders 103 by the spring-loaded check valves 22, by the conduits 6a., 6b connected to the regulator 4 controlling the start by pulses, and which will be described. . in detail with reference to fi-. 4, and which is connected by a line 5 to the main starting valve 10 (fig. 2) which will also be described in detail later. The valve 10 is connected by means of the pipe 61 to a relatively large source of compressed air.
With reference. again in fig. 1, the cylinder 25 is connected to. a relay 32 controlling the displacement device by a con duct 26 which, as mentioned above, provides the. liquid pressure also at the pistons of the decompression valves 27. The relay 32 comprises two cylinders of different diameter in axial alignment and containing an assembly formed of a small piston 30 and a piston 31 of larger diameter. The outer end chi small cylinder is connected by the conduit 33 to the distributor 37 and through the intermediary of the latter to a conduit. pressurized liquid supply 42.
An inner lumen of the small cylinder of the relay 32 is connected with the aforementioned conduit 26. The outer end of the larger diameter cylinder is. connected by the conduit 46 with the bore in which the piston rod 24 can move. In the internal position of the piston 24, a groove 24a in the rod of this piston opens a passage for the liquid between the conduits 46 and 48, but in the external position of the piston 24, this passage is blocked by the rod of this piston . The inner end of the large diameter cylinder of relay 32 communicates with the inner end of the small cylinder of this relay and opens to the outside for evacuation at E. Operation of moving the free pistons.
When the slide pistons 39 and 40 of the distributor 37 are in the position shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, the conduit 42 communicates with the conduit 33, and pressurized liquid arrives at the outer end of the small cylinder dre of the relay 32. A branch of the conduit 33 is connected to the end-of-travel reversal valve 35, and the liquid pressure from the conduit 33 pushes the three-seat piston 34 to the right where it connects the conduit 46 to the exhaust E '.
As the outer end of the large diameter cylinder of the relay 32 is connected to the conduit 46, the liquid pressure exerted on the outer end of the small piston 30 can push the pistons 30, 31 to the right, thereby exposing the lumen of the piston. conduit 26 to admit the liquid pressure through this conduit to the pistons of the decompression valves 27 by opening them, and to the cylinder 25 whose piston 24 will then be moved to the right against the action of the spring 47 and will push the free pistons 104, 105, 106 towards the vicinity of their external dead center position, the air in the accumulator cylinders 103 3 escaping through the compression valves 27.
The outward movement of the free pistons is transmitted by the connecting rod 29 to the cam 43 which pushes the three-seat piston 34 of the reversing valve 35 to the left position shown, and in which the conduit 46 is connected. to the conduit 33 by a bypass conduit running from the closed end of the cylinder of the valve 35 to a lumen opening between the outer seat and the middle seat of the piston, so that the fluid pressure now acts on the outer side of the piston 31 of the relay 32 and pushes it back to its left position, illustrated in FIG. 1, overcoming the pressure acting on the small piston 30.
Any liquid held between the pistons 30 and 31 is discharged through E, and as soon as the piston 30 has passed the lumen of the duct. 26, the liquid in this duct also escapes through E. Consequently, the decompression valves 27 close under the action of their springs, and the piston 24 is returned to the left in its cylinder 25 by the spring 47.
In this withdrawn position of the piston 24, communication is established through the groove 24a, as mentioned above, between the conduit 46 and the conduit 48 going to the start relay 49, shown in FIG. 2.
Start relay .
This relay 49 comprises a piston 50 which, in its rest position, is pushed to the right by a spring 51, the force of which can be adjusted by an adjusting screw 53 acting on a stop 52. The piston 50 has a rod 50a extending outward and two grooves, one narrow, 50b and the other, wider, 50d. A bore 50c of the piston 50 connects the. groove 50b with the left side of cylinder 49 ', which is in communication with the escape E "of the liquid to the atmosphere.
The right end of the cylinder 49 'is linked to a conduit 75 providing fluid pressure by a remote control. The middle part of the cylinder 49 ', that is to say the part corresponding to the wide groove 50d of the piston 50, is connected to the aforementioned duct 48.
The part of the cylinder 49 'which is separated from the conduit 48 by the piston 50, when the latter is. in its right position, as shown, is connected by a conduit. 54 having a check valve 66 bypassed by a bypass duct 67 which is adjusted by an adjustable needle 68, to the servo motor cylinder 55, which contains two pistons 56 and 57 spaced apart by a spring 58. The piston 57 can bear against the cylinder. stem of the main starter valve 10, normally maintained in its closed position by its own weight and by the air pressure from the compressed air source through the duct. 61 and acting on its upper surface.
The lower side of the main valve 10 is connected by the conduit 5 to the crankcase of the starting regulator 4, shown schematically in fig. 1 and in section on an enlarged scale in FIG. 4. Starter regulator.
In fig. 4, a cam 1 is arranged on a shaft A which performs a rotary oscillatory movement in dependence on the reciprocating movement of the free pistons 104, 105, 106 by the fact that it is driven by the balance 108 which serves to synchronize the movements of the two free pistons. The cam 1 is in contact with a roller 2 carried by the end of a lever 2a pivoted on a lug of the regulator housing 4 and which carries an adjustment screw 2b pressing on the end of the rod of a valve 3, the seat of which is located in the governor housing 4.
This casing is connected, as already mentioned, to the source of compressed air by line 5 in which the main start-up valve 10 is interposed, and by ducts 6a and 6b to the key-retained valves 22 (fig. 1). which provide access to the accumulator cylinders 103 of the free piston machine.
In the position shown in fig. 4, the valve 3 is in its closed position which it assumes during operation under the action of the excess pressure of the compressed air acting on its underside as long as the valve is not lowered by the valve. lever 2a, actuated by cam 1, as will be described in detail below.
In the position ready for operation, the valve 3, however, is in its open position, in which it falls under the action of its own weight at the end of the previous start-up operation.
The angular position of the cam 1 on the shaft A is adjustable, by means of grooves 1a, in the disc of the cam, traversed by clamping screws lb connected with a collar (not shown) of the shaft A.
The movement of the valve 3 is limited by a stopper 7, so as to keep the underside of the valve exposed to the inlet of compressed air when the main valve 10 is open.
Start-up operation. The starting operation takes place as follows The free pistons have been placed in the appropriate position for starting at their normal outside dead centers or preferably slightly inside these dead centers as described. In this position of the free pistons, the cam 1 is in the position shown in FIG. 4.
If now the main start valve 10 opens, as will be described in detail later with reference to FIG. 2, air arriving through line 5 is admitted to accumulator cylinder 103 through open valve 3 which, however, is then raised by the inflow of air and subsequently held in its seat in housing 4 by excess air pressure acting on its underside.
Under the action of compressed air, which entered the accumulator cylinders 103 through the, valve 3 before. on closing, the free pistons 1, 04, 105, 106 are moved inward from their position near the outer dead center. This movement is transmitted by the tree _1 to. the cam 1 including the nose, by the way. on roller 2, lowers lever 2a which in turn lowers and opens valve 3.
Compressed air is thus admitted from the supply line 5 through the valve 3, the conduits 6a, 6b and the check valves 22 to the accumulator cylinders 103, and the free udders are accelerated inward.
The fuel can be injected into the engine cylinder 101 already at this stage, and the energy of the explosion, although it is not yet sufficient to establish regular operation, can. assist the return of the free piston assemblies to their outside dead center position.
During this reverse movement of the free pistons, the cam 1 does not move as much as shown in fig. 4, but far enough to lower the lever 2a from the opposite side of the nose of the cam and thus open momentarily. . valve 3 to admit another pulse of compressed air to the accumulator cylinders 103, which further accelerates the free pistons inward until the free pistons reach a given inward position, because, at this time, valve 3 will close. This is repeated until the engine cylinder ignites steadily.
Referring now in particular to FIG. 2, it will be described how the main start valve 10 of the compressed air supply is opened for the starting operation and kept open during this operation, and how it closes again as soon as the engine cylinder lights regularly.
If the free pistons being in the position of fig. 1, a fluid pressure is applied, by means of the remote control, to the right side of the piston 50 through the conduit 75, the piston 50 moves to the left and, therefore, the liquid pressure changes from supply duct 42 via the distributor (fig. 1 and 3), the duct 33, the reversing valve 35, the piston 34 of which is in the left position, via the duct 46, the opening 24a of the piston rod. piston 24, conduit 48 (fig. 2), cylinder 49 ', wide groove 50d of piston 50, conduit 54 and check valve 66 on the underside of booster piston 56.
Consequently, this piston is lifted, compresses the spring 58 until the piston 57 overcomes the air pressure acting on the upper face of the valve 10 and opens the latter, which triggers the starting operations, as described above.
With particular reference now to FIG. 3, the distributor 37 operates as follows: In a rest position, as shown, the liquid pressure passes from the conduit 42 through one of the two branch conduits 42a or 42b and through the groove of one of the slide pistons 39 and 40 to the conduit 33 and also reaches, through the conduit 38, the groove of the spool 36 and, from there, through one of the ports 37a or (as shown) 37b, the cylinder of the piston-spool 39 or (as shown) ) that of piston-slide 40.
The cylinder of the other piston-slide, for example of the piston-slide 39, is opened to the atmosphere by the port 37a. It emerges. of fig. 3 that, if the position of the spool-drawers 39, 40 were reversed, or if the two piston-spools were in their right-hand positions, the connection of the duct 33 with the pressurized liquid supply via the duct 42 would still exist.
However, as soon as the free pistons move, the spool 36 oscillates by the effect of its connection by the connecting rod 28 with the lever 108a, and the openings 37a and 37b are opened periodically and alternately to the liquid pressure coming from the duct. 42 via line 38 and to the atmosphere; consequently, sufficient liquid pressure passes through the line 38 and the groove of the drawer 36, as well as through the openings 37a and 37b to force the two piston-slides 39 and 40 to the left against their weak spring 41.
The openings 37a and 37b are of limited cross section and, due to the weakness of the springs 41, the liquid coming from the conduit 38 will enter the interior of the cylinders of the slide pistons 39 and 40 faster than it is 'escapes. It emerges from FIG. 3 that, for this position of the drawers 39, 40, the duct 33 is disconnected from the duct 42 and is open to the atmosphere at 37c by the grooves of the two piston-drawers 39, 40 and the oblique channel 37d in the distributor body 37.
The ensuing pressure decrease in pipe 33 would reach booster cylinder 55 through conduit 46, groove 24a, conduit 48, cylinder 49 of the relay and groove 50d of piston 50; but the check valve 66 closes and the liquid in the servomotor cylinder 55 can only gradually escape through the bypass duct 67 and the needle 68 to escape to the atmosphere through the duct 48 and the light 37e of the distributor 37, so that the main valve 10 shuts off the air supply with sufficient time to allow the repeated application of the starting air, as described.
The groove 50b and the bore 50e in the udder 50 evacuate towards the exhaust E "any liquid which could have leaked towards the right end of the cylinder 49 from the pipe 48, thus preventing unintentional starting. The starting of the machine could also be triggered by hand by the operator who pushes the rod 50a to the left and the hand holds in this position against the action of the spring 51 until that the engine cylinder ignites regularly The device shown in Fig. 2 could also be replaced by a main air valve, actuated by hand or remotely, and controlling the communication between lines 61 and 5.
As explained above, the positive fuel injection device can be arranged so that the fuel can be injected into the engine cylinder 101 of the machine at the same time with the admission of the starting air into the engines. accumulator cylinders 103 and while the stroke of the free pistons increases in amplitude towards its maximum.
Alternatively the injection of the fuel can be deferred until the stroke of the free pistons has reached a predetermined amplitude.
In fig. 5, which shows a second embodiment of the starting installation, the members corresponding to those of the installation of FIG. 1 are designated by the same reference numerals. Apart from the starting regulator, this installation is identical to that of figs. 1 to 4.
The start regulator 130 again has a cam 1 on a drive shaft A which oscillates in dependence on the movement of the free pistons.
In the starting regulator 130, which is shown in detail in fig. 6, the cam 1 fixed to the shaft A can cause the pusher arm 2a to swing around a fixed pivot 135 carried by the body of the starting regulator. This arm 2a is lifted out of contact with the cam 1 by the tension of a spring 136, interposed between one end of the arm and a #illet 137 carried by the body of the regulator 130, except when the arm is kept in contact with it. the cam 1 against the force of the spring 136 by the action of the air pressure on the valves of the regulator.
These valves include a shut-off valve 138 initially open and having a valve stem 138a which slides into the guide 139 and protrudes out thereof which is held in the body of the regulator 130 by a tubular nut 140, and an adjustment valve 3 which is provided with a rod 141a which slides in the body of the regulator 1.30. The rod 141a of this valve 3 cooperates with an auxiliary rod 142 which causes the opening of the valve 3; this auxiliary rod passes through the guide 144 screwed into the body of the regulator 130 and has one end which comes out of the guide 144, while the other end forms a head serving as a support for a spring 143 which is compressed between this head and a head complementary to the rod 141a. valve 3.
The push arm 2a carries adjustable stop screws 2c and 2b, respectively pressing the ends of the rods 138a and 142. The valve 3 is initially open, but it closes and opens intermittently, as will be described. later.
The regulator also comprises a closure member 148 of the body of this regulator and which also serves as a stop for the valve 3, and a plunger 145 for the stop valve 138, this plunger sliding in the guide 146 screwed into the body of the valve. regulator 130, under the action of the fluid pressure applied through the distributor 37 by the inlet member 1.47.
The operation of placing the free pistons for starting is exactly. the same as that described with reference to FIG. 1.
In order to start the free udder machine, the. Main starter valve 10 (fi ". 2) is opened as described, so as to admit compressed air from the pipe 61 through the pipe 5 into the body of the starter regulator 130. This air passes without being prevented by stop valve 138. A small amount of air passes through control valve 3 to cylinders 103 through conduits 6, 6a, 6b and valves 22, and the pressure of this air moves each piston. free 104, 105, 106 towards the internal dead center position by moving the cam 1, so as to allow the air pressure to close the regulating valve 3, the rods 141n and 142 moving outwards .
In this way, a small puff of air is admitted into the cylinders 103, which communicates a small inward movement to the free pistons, which, after that, rebound towards the outer dead center. During the rebound, the cam 1 will again open the adjustment valve 3 (by the lever 2a, the screw 2b, the rod 142, the spring 143 and the rod 141a) and a second puff of air will thus be admitted in cylinders 103 to produce a new inward stroke of a greater amplitude of the free pistons. This action continues until the amplitude of the stroke of the free pistons is such that they approach normal internal dead center, and then cam 111 operates fuel pump 110 to supply fuel to engine cylinder 101, which starts the free piston machine.
After starting, the amplitude of movement of the free pistons will be increased towards the position of the outside dead center; the amplitude of this movement is sufficient to produce, through the intermediary of the cam 1 acting on the lever 2a, the screw 2c and the rod 138a, the closing of the stop valve 138, when the free pistons are near of the outer end of a full-length stock exchange of functioning, normal.
The stop valve 138 moves to its closed position and remains in this position, so that the air coming from the duct 5 is cut off from the valve 3 and from the duct 6; now no pressure is exerted: on the screws 2b and 2c by the rods 138a and 142, therefore, the push lever 2a is lifted from the cam 1 by the springs 136 and is no longer influenced by the subsequent operation of the free piston machine.
Complete closing movement is communicated to the shut-off valve 138 by air pressure. For this, the valve 138 has the form of a disc which, in the open position, is withdrawn into a recess outside the path of the air arriving through the duct 5 and this air naturally tends to maintain the. valve 138 in its recess. By the action of the cam and the push lever 2a, the disc is brought into the air stream so that it enters its flooded seat where it closes the wise passage of air towards the adjustment valve 3.
The pressure of the incoming air then applies the valve 138 to its seat and maintains it in its closed position; movement of the valve 138, as described, causes the lifter 145 to lift and the valve and lifter to remain in contact with each other. Subsequently, the main start valve 10 is closed as described, and later fluid pressure is applied through the distributor 37 by the inlet 147 on the tappet 145 which is then lowered to turn the stop valve on. 138 by preparing a new start.
The pressure of oil or other fluid which is applied to recall the lifter 1.45 of the stop valve 138 may be quite low, since the lifter is very sensitive to the pressure of the fluid before a pressure of 1.45. air is applied to the starting regulator through line 5, and must overcome only the relatively low pressure of the outlet 136 to open the valve 138; furthermore, a delay in stopping the fluid pressure on the pusher 145 is not detrimental, since the free pistons can easily move the stop valve 138 into its closed position, and the air pressure can easily keep the valve closed against the very low force exerted by the pusher 145.
If the regulating valve 3 were rigidly actuated by the lever 2a, this valve 3 would open during the outward stroke when the free pistons are some distance from the point where they stop, and close again. during the impulse run at the same distance from this last point. Air, acting in opposition to the movement of the free udders, would thus be admitted into the cylinders 103 on the. same length of the return stroke of each oscillation as of the impulse stroke.
However, one must have a longer opening time to the air pressure during the impulse stroke than during the return stroke, and thus one must arrive at obtaining that the point where the control valve 3 opens is much closer to the outer end of the free piston stroke than the point where valve 3 closes. This is achieved by combining two measures.
First, the valve 3 is arranged to relinquish its seat in the direction opposite to the movement of the incoming air, so that the air pressure tends to close the valve, with increasing force as the valve closes. and, secondly, the valve is controlled by the lever 2a by means of a spring and a lost motion device comprising the auxiliary rod 142 which controls the rod 141a of the valve 3 by means of the spring 143 .
During the starting impulse stroke, the movement of the free pistons and of the cam 1 allows the rod 142 to move to decrease the pressure of the spring 143 until, after a certain movement of the free pistons, the air pressure closes the re-threading valve 3. During the return stroke, the cam 1 controls the rod 142 (by the lever 2a) and compresses the spring 143, but it is only when the pressure of this spring reached a high value or when the contact.
is established between the rods 142 and 141a that a sufficient force is exerted to open the valve 3 against the rather considerable force due to the. air pressure; thus, valve 3 does not reopen until the piston comes almost to rest at the outer end of its stroke.
The fluid pressure which opens the main start valve 10, and which leads the stop valve 138 through the pusher 145, is stopped by the distributor 37 (fig. 3) which is actuated by the free pistons. It has already been explained that a delay in the action of the distributor 37 to stop this fluid pressure is generally not harmful; however, premature closing of the pressurized control fluid conduit may cause the starting air supply to cylinders 103 to shut off before the free piston machine has properly started and, therefore, provision is made for preferably means for delaying this stop by the distributor 37, so as to reduce the risk of missing a suitable start.
The start-up installation according to fig. 5a and 7 to 12 is, except for the starting regulator, identical to that of fig. 1 to 4. In this installation, the shaft A carries a toothed sector 154 and a lever 131 connected by rods 153 to the connecting rod 107, so that the sector 154 sorrel following the movement of the free pistons. The arcuate edge of this sector 154 is provided with ratchet teeth 154a. On one side of the teeth there is a projection 154b, the purpose of which will be described later.
In the body of the regulator 1.30 is arranged the adjustment and stop valve 3 having a rod 155a which slides in the body and comes out of the latter to press against an actuating lever 156, the valve, pivoted on the body of the regulator in 157 and influenced by a spring 158 in the direction to hold the valve 3 open against a stop combined with the closing cap 148. A pawl 159, carried by a pin 160 at the end of the lever 156, is. maintained in a middle position by a spring 161 connected at one of its ends to a lever 156 and to the other end to a heel 159a of the pawl 159.
A latch 162 is articulated on an extension. clu regulator body 130 and can rotate around a pin 163 under the action of a spring. 164. This latch. East. positioned relative to the pawl 159 so that, if the heel 159a of the pawl abuts against the projection 154b (Fig. 12), the pawl can momentarily move the latch 162 against the force of the spring 164 until the latch slides under pawl 159 and holds it out of engagement with the ratchet sector.
When the free piston machine is in the starting position, the starting regulator 130 is in the position shown in fig. 7. The operation is the same as that which has already been described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 4, up to the point where air is admitted through line 5 into the body of regulator 130; then the air pressure moves the valve 3 down to the position shown in fig. 8, but the engagement of the pawl 159 in the teeth 154a of the sector 154 prevents complete closure of the valve 3. As before, a puff of air is admitted into the cylinders 103.
The subsequent operation is as follows: The resulting movement of the free pistons was to move the sector 154 to the position shown in fig. 9. This movement of the sector, as a result of the catch of the nose of the pawl 159 in one of the teeth 154a of the sector 154, causes the pawl 159 to tilt against the spring 161, away from its middle position until 'so that, after a certain movement, it reaches a position such that the valve 3 and the lever 156 are free to move, under the action of the air pressure exerted on the valve 3, into a position in which the valve is closed, as shown in fig. 9.
A further movement of the free pistons, which results from the expansion of the starting air in cylinder 103, will allow, before the free pistons reach their internal dead center position, at the end of the sector. 154, to go out of the socket, with the pawl 159, as shown in fig. 10, which allows the pawl to return to its middle position, while the valve 3 remains closed.
The breath of air admitted into the cylinders 103 gives movement to the free pistons which, then, rebound. During the return stroke, the end of the sector 154 will engage with the pawl 159 by moving it to the other side of its middle position, while leaving the valve 3 closed, and the pawl 159 will slide on the teeth of the sector, as shown in fig. 11. Once the rebound movement is complete, there will be a slight movement towards the inside dead point position. Thanks to the engagement of the pawl in the teeth of the sector, the pawl will be immediately moved to its middle position and this movement acts on the lever 156 to reopen the valve 3.
A second puff of air will thus be admitted into the cylinders dres 103 and will cause a new inward stroke of a greater amplitude, the valve 3 remaining open until the same point is. reached as before where the pawl 159 switches to a position in which the valve closes. This action continues until the amplitude of movement of the free pistons is such that they approach normal internal dead center, after which cam 111 operates fuel pump 110 and the free piston machine starts.
Up to this point, the free pistons have oscillated without reaching either of the inner and outer dead centers. At the point now reached, however, the pistons have reached the normal inside dead center position and the fuel supply has started. The stroke resulting from the combustion will now move the pistons outward into their neutral position. outside.
This has. The effect is that the protrusion 154b, hitherto ineffective, of the sector 154, causes the pawl 159 to tilt, such that its beak passes over the latch 162, so that the pawl 159 is lifted out of the way of the toothed sector 154 , which does not however prevent the closing of the pope 3.
When the air is subsequently stopped, by closing the main start valve 10, the absence of air pressure will allow the spring 158 to move the lever 156 to reopen. valve 3 (this reopening being otherwise ineffective), pawl 159 being. then disengaged from latch 162, but moving with lever 156 out of the path of sector 154, and the entire device then being ready. for the next starting operation.
The starting air admitted into the accumulator cylinders 103 will escape through the openings 103a which are discovered by the elements 106 of the free pistons when they are near their normal internal neutral position, so that this air does not exist. 'has no effect on the operation of the ma chine when it is started.
