Machine with at least one free piston. The subject of the invention is a machine with at least one free piston with internal combustion compression ignition.
This machine could be, for example, a two-stroke opposed free piston machine comprising a common motor cylinder in which the motor elements of the two pistons work and in which part or all of the compressed air in the compressor part. is used to sweep and fill the engine cylinder. However, this machine could also be a machine with a four-stroke engine cylinder.
In such a machine at least the inner end point reached by the piston at the end of the compression of the filling load in the engine cylinder (i.e. the inner dead center) usually varies during operation.
The machine according to the invention is characterized by a device sensitive to the average pressure prevailing in a compressor space of the machine, and influencing the device for injecting fuel into the engine cylinder, so that the point of the piston stroke where the injection begins varies as a function of said average pressure.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows this embodiment schematically in elevation with partial section, and FIG. 2 shows in section, on a larger scale, the adjustment mechanism of this embodiment.
If we first refer to fig. 1, it can be seen that the embodiment shown is an internal combustion gas generator with free pis tons comprising an engine cylinder 101, two compressor cylinders 102 and two accumulator cylinders 103, arranged on the same line as the engine cylinder on the other hand on the other side of this cylinder. This generator also comprises two free pistons, each consisting of a motor element 104, a compressor element 105 and an accumulator element 106, performing opposite reciprocating movements in the cylinders,
these two pistons being connected by connecting rods 107 to a balance 108 articulated on the frame of the machine.
The air enters the compressor cylinders 102 through the air intake openings 14 and through the intake valves 112, and it leaves these cylinders through the outlet valves 13 and the transfer lines 15. compressed air enters the engine cylinder 101 as soon as the scanning lights 101a are discovered by one of the driving elements 104 and the combustion products with the scavenging air escape from the engine cylinder 101 as soon as the lights of Exhaust 101b are discovered by the other driving element, then these gases pass through line 16 which ends in a gas turbine (not shown).
The fuel is injected into the combustion cylinder 101 by a plunger fuel pump 1 provided with the fuel flow control rack; this fuel passes through the pipe 17, the fuel distributor 118 and the pipes 119 which lead to the fuel injectors 109. The fuel pump 1 is actuated by a cam 2 to which a movement d is communicated. oscillation by the free pistons which are connected to this cam by the lever 120 and the rod 121.
A lever 3 actuating the piston of the pump 1 is articulated on the fixed axis 4 located on one side of the cam 2 and carries, on the other side with respect to the cam shaft, an articulation axis 5, the axis of the cam 2 and the articulation axes 4 and 5 being in the same plane when the fuel pump is not in motion. Two equal arms 6 and 7, carried respectively by the axes 5 and 4, have their free ends articulated on a connecting rod 8,
so as to form an articulated parallelogram. The member actuated by the cam is a roller 9 mounted at a point on the rod 8 such that, during the movement of the arms 6, 7 and 8 relative to the lever 3, the movement of the roller 9 takes place in a circular arc around the axis of the cam 2, the roller 9 rolling on the periphery of the cam 2.
An extension 7a of the arm 7 is connected to the servomotor piston 10 which moves in a reciprocating motion in a cylinder 11, so that this arm can thus be brought to different angular positions to move the cylinder. roller 9 in positions that are variable in size around the fuel cam 2.
The supply of fluid to cylinder 11 is controlled by distributor 113. The average pressure prevailing in the compressor space of one of the cylinders 102 acts on a membrane 114 closing a chamber 115 which communicates with this compressor space through the small orifice. adjustable throttle 116.
The displacement of the membrane is transmitted directly by a rod to the spool of the distributor 113 so that a variation in the average pressure prevailing in the compressor space causes this spool of the distributor 113 to move in one direction or the other; the resulting displacement of the piston 10 which is transmitted through the spring 117 to the diaphragm 114 and to the spool of the distributor 113 continues until the spool of the distributor 113 is returned to its. normal closed position, the membrane 114 thus also being returned to a normal position.
In this position, the spring pressure. 117 balances the air pressure in the chamber 115 and the position of the piston 10 corresponds to this latter pressure. The movement of the piston 10 will rotate the arms 6, 7 and 8 relative to the lever 3 and will therefore move the roller 9 around the cam, so that this roller is actuated earlier or later by the protruding part of the cam 2 and the start of fuel injection is advanced or delayed.
When the free pistons move, the cam 2 oscillates; when these free pistons approach the internal dead center, the cam at a point which depends on the angular position to which the roller 9 has been brought around this cam - drives this roller 9 by moving this roller integrally, the articulated mechanism and the lever 3 for actuating the fuel pump 1. This movement and therefore the stroke of the pump 1 are determined by the dimensions of the cam 2 and are practically independent of the variable moment at which the operation of the pump begins.
