So schmelzen z.
Process for the production of metal objects. The manufacture of metal parts plays an important and decisive role in the industrial production of consumer goods. Even today, it is still essentially based on methods that have been known for hundreds of years and have only been continuously improved and perfected through the advancement of technology, without having undergone fundamental upheavals.
In principle, the ores that occur in nature are always used to first melt the metal and then start shaping the parts. There are two ways of doing this. If the demands on the dimensional accuracy of the riveted workpieces are very high and one can also get by with relatively low strength values, one is content with pouring the liquid metal into molds and only reworks with cutting tools if necessary. If, on the other hand, high quality and dimensional accuracy within narrow tolerances are required, the effort involved in manufacturing the metal parts is significantly greater.
It is then usually necessary to cast the liquid metal into a block and to produce a semi-finished metal product from the same by forging, pressing or rolling at an elevated temperature. Only this is then brought into the final form by processing with machine tools.
The abundance of necessary processing means that the cost share of the rolled metal in a finished metal object often only makes up a few percent.
The above explanations make it understandable that the systems in the metal industry are among the most complex and expensive in technology.
Chemical material production has made great strides in recent years and has led to the development of so-called plastics. Processes have been described in which the finished object is produced directly from the raw materials by a pressing process at only slightly increased temperature.
This very shortened way of manufacturing parts from synthetic resin has increased the desire for simpler manufacturing processes in the metal industry as well. He has found partial fulfillment in powder metallurgy, where metal powders are pressed and sintered into ready-to-install metal objects. So here is already a process that is comparable to the technique of plastic masses. The metal powders are produced from the ores, which are then converted into homogeneous metal parts by pressing and sintering.
Now, however, the powder-metallurgical pressing process has narrow application limits because the metal powders do not meet the laws of static dryness propagation; therefore, parts with undercuts, very complicated steps and cross-sectional transitions cannot be produced Attempts have been made to plasticize the metal powder and thereby enable the manufacture of more complicated bodies, but practically usable results have not yet been achieved.
The present invention now describes a completely new way of producing metal parts, even the most complex shapes. It uses metal compounds as starting materials that obey the laws of hydrostatic pressure propagation much more closely than metal powder. In addition, they can usually be processed at much lower temperatures by melting and casting than metals.
The method according to the invention for the production of metal objects is characterized in that objects are formed from starting materials containing at least one reducible metal compound, the molded bodies produced in this way are reduced to metal parts and these are subjected to a subsequent compression.
The invention can be implemented in a large number of embodiments, which can be divided into the following three main groups: 1. Processing of metal compounds by pressing.
2. Processing of metal connections by casting.
3. Processing of mixtures of metal compounds and metal powders or metal chips.
In detail, the following procedure can be used in the production of metal objects according to the method of the invention: Group 1: Processing of metal compounds by pressing. While the pressing of metal powders is due to the adhesive forces which the exerting individual grains on each other, very great forces are required, alkali salts or metal oxides can be processed into shaped bodies with much less effort. So are z.

After cooling, the metal parts produced in this way have a density of 40 to 50%. They are then compressed to their final density, cold or warm, and if necessary to increase strength or toughness, they are subjected to a further heat treatment by sintering or normalizing.
The use of two compaction operations requires the determination of the mass of the compact from the metal connection taking into account the density differences between metal connection and metal. In order to then achieve a homogeneous thickening of parts with different heights in the press alignment, the heights on the pre-pressed part must be pressed in a ratio that corresponds to the wire ratio between the reduced metal blank and the finished part, so that the entire pressed part is pressed to the same density.
The following exemplary embodiments may clarify further details of the invention.
Example 1: A mixture of copper-I-chloride and iron-II-chloride, in which the metals copper and iron are mixed in a ratio of 35% copper and 65% iron, becomes plates at a pressure of 0.8 tons per cm2 15 mm high. The pellets are reduced with hydrogen starting at 400 for two hours. During the reduction, the temperature is slowly increased to 920. After cooling, the panels are washed with water and pre-rolled with a height decrease of 40%. They are then annealed at 650 and finish-rolled onto strip material of 1 mm thickness. The end product is a copper-iron pseudo-alloy of 40 kg per mm2 strength and 6% elongation.
Example 2: Anhydrous iron (II) chloride is pressed into flat frying pans at 150. These are reduced starting at 630 with hydrogen. During the reduction, the temperature is increased to 1150o. After cooling, the parts are finished-pressed with a pressure of 8 tons per cm2 and enamelled here directly. The high temperature that occurs during enamelling is used for both recrystallization and final solidification.
Example 3: A mixture of copper oxide and molybdenum oxide, in which the metals are present in a ratio of 18% copper and 82% molybdenum, is pressed into switching sleeves for high-voltage switches. The pellets are then reduced to metal at 715 using hydrogen and pre-sintered at 1100 for three hours. Finally, the parts are finished pressed at 750 and then briefly annealed with hydrogen at 1200 to remove the scaling.
Group 2: Processing of metal compounds by casting. The melting points of numerous metal compounds are significantly lower than those of the corresponding metals. So melt z. B. the chlorides of the most important utility metals such as iron, manganese, nickel, cobalt and copper, all below 800, while the melting points of the corresponding metals. Except for copper, which already melts at 1.083 ": all are above 1200.
While the melting points of the metals are so high that they can no longer be processed into molded parts with the aid of the injection molding process, the chlorides of the corresponding metals can still be processed using this technique. It is therefore possible to produce injection-molded parts of a very complex shape from the metal halides. Of course, any other casting process can also be used to shape them.
The conversion of the metal compound to metal and further processing then takes place as already described for group 1. Just is. When processing the chlorides, pay particular attention to the fact that about. Any remaining salt residue removed before the final digestion. otherwise the finished parts could easily be damaged by corrosion. The best way to remove the residual salt is by washing or extracting it with water or alcohol. The following exemplary embodiments describe further details.
Example 4: Iron (II) chloride with an addition of 2% copper chloride is melted and cast at 720 in steel molds to form pipes 1 m in length and 35 mm inside width. The tubes are reduced with hydrogen at 630 and, after the reduction is complete, pre-sintered for two hours in the same work process at 1100. After cooling, the remaining salt residues are leached with water and the pipes are compacted to a density of 7.7 by cold hammering. After annealing for 1050, they have a strength of 45 kg per mm2 and an elongation of 12%.
Example 5: A melt of 88% iron (II) chloride and 12% mangano (II) chloride is injected into gear wheels at 690 on an injection molding machine. After demolding, the same are reduced with hydrogen starting at 600. During the reduction, the temperature is slowly increased to 1100 and at the same time petroleum vapor is added to the gas in order to achieve a carburization of the pellets. After the reduction, carbonization and pre-sintering process has been completed, the parts are extracted with water and then pressed with a pressure of 8 tons per cm2. This is followed by a final sintering of two hours at 1120.
Example 6: A mixture of chlorides of the three metals, iron, nickel, molybdenum, in which the metals are present in a ratio of 20:60:20, is melted and poured into flat sheets. These are reduced starting at 400 with hydrogen which is saturated with sodium vapor. The reduction temperature is slowly increased to 1100. After cooling, the metal plate is extracted with alcohol and then rolled at 950. After a bright annealing under hydrogen, the alloy is finish-rolled when cold.
Group 3: Processing clay gemisels from metal compounds and metal powders or metal chips. The density of the metal bodies produced according to group 1 or 2 before the second compression is very low and is about 40 to 50% of the density of the compact metals. It is possible to arrive at denser bodies by not starting from pure metal compounds, but from mixtures of those with metal powders or metal chips. The loss of formability that results from this is only slight, while the density of the blank can be increased from 40 to 70%. Due to the chemical reaction that occurs during the conversion to metal, the added metal particles are built into the workpiece very firmly, so that there is no loss of strength.
The following examples are given for this process variant.
Example i: A mixture of 70% iron powder and 30% iron (II) chloride is cast into sockets at 750 in an injection molding machine. After demolding, they are reduced to metal at 630 with hydrogen. The reduction temperature is slowly increased to 1200. After cooling, the pieces are washed with water, press-fitted (calibrated) and, in this condition, used directly as sintered bearings.
Example 8: A mixture of 25% iron (II) chloride and 75% turnings made of a carbon steel with 0.15% carbon, comminuted to a grain size of about 0.5 mm, is produced at 7500. an injection molding machine to handle handles processed. Near that. Demould the parts at (i30 "redu ed with hydrogen, the temperature is slowly increased to 11,000.
The rural pre-sintered metal object, reduced in this way, is re-pressed after the removal of the remaining salt residues with a pressure of 8 tons per cubic meter and finally sintered at 1220 for two hours.
The last two application examples show that it is very easily possible in this way to produce homogeneous metal objects from heterogeneous mixtures of metal particles and metal compounds.
