Heat-resistant alloy. The invention relates to a heat-resistant alloy, in particular to one which has high strength values and corrosion resistance both at normal temperature and at elevated temperatures.
There are currently a number of alloys commercially available that are known to be heat-resistant; however, these usually have various disadvantages, in that their strength is too low for various modern fields of application, or their resistance to oxidation is insufficient, or because they cannot be easily forged. Of the known heat-resistant alloys, the iron-nickel-chromium alloys were generally regarded as the best, since the chromium gives them resistance to oxidation and the nickel tends to give them a cubic-surface-centered crystal structure.
Although they are superior to the ferritic iron-chromium alloys, the strength of the iron-chromium-nickel alloys decreases fairly quickly with increasing temperature. For example, it was found that alloys of iron with 25% chromium and 20% nickel at 6500 C only have half the strength as at room temperature. The alloys available also have 1. [% Mo + 0.8 (% Cr)
+ 0.75 (% Mn) - 0.25 (% Ni) - 1.5] = 8 to <B> 11- </B>. even at ordinary temperature a rather low strength. The 25-20 alloy just mentioned has a tensile strength of only 5800 kg / em2 at room temperature. Certain alloys have also been manufactured in which elements such as beryllium, titanium and aluminum were used to give them precipitation-hardening properties.
However, these elements are not satisfactory, since alloys which contain such precipitation-hardening elements and whose hardness is only due to the presence of these elements do not have the property of maintaining this hardness when they are subjected to prolonged heating at elevated temperatures will be. The main aim of the present invention is to create an alloy which is oxidationsbestän dig at elevated temperatures and has high strength.
The invention consequently relates to a heat-resistant 3-lethal alloy which is hardened by precipitation hardening and contains 20 to 60% nickel, 16 to 28% chromium, 4 to 20 molybdenum, less than 0.20% carbon and up to 3% manganese, the ratio of the alloy constituents being such that the invention is to be explained in more detail by the following description of its preferred embodiment, to which reference is made in part in the accompanying drawings.
1 shows the maximum degrees of hardness that can be obtained by heat treatment of alloys according to the invention, in part, depending on the molybdenum content. The percentage of molybdenum is plotted on the abscissa and the maximum hardness that is obtained when heated to 850 ° C. is plotted on the ordinate. The hardness was determined by the Vickers method with the diamond pyramid and is abbreviated as D. P. H. in the following.
Fig. 2 is a graphical representation, the curve of which shows the greatest hardness of alloys in part according to the invention in relation to a relationship between the alloy components. The effective molybdenum is shown in percent on the abscissa, the maximum hardness (D.P.H.) is plotted on the ordinate by heat treatment at 8500 C.
Fig. 3 is a graph showing the curves of the hardness obtained after various heat treatments. The effective molybdenum is shown as a percentage on the abscissa and the hardness (D. P. H.) is shown on the ordinate.
Fig. 4 shows curves which indicate the hardness of an alloy according to the present invention after different heating times at different temperatures. The heating time in hours is plotted on the abscissa and the hardness (D. P. H.) is plotted on the ordinate.
It has been found that heat-resistant alloys with higher strength and good resistance to corrosion and oxidation (both at ordinary and at elevated temperature) can be obtained if they are given increased strength by precipitation hardening.
The alloys according to the invention contain chromium, nickel, molybdenum and manganese and are hardened by precipitation hardening; they can be subjected to high temperature quenching and subsequent heat treatment at somewhat lower temperatures in order to give them high strength at room temperature and higher temperatures.
The heat treatment, which has proven to be particularly suitable 'in order to develop the desired properties in the alloy according to the invention, consists in quenching the alloy from a temperature between 1000 and 13000 C and then exposing it to a temperature between 700 and 1000 C, the latter temperature should generally be at least 2000 C below the quenching temperature. Preferably, the quenching takes place from a temperature between 1040 and 12600C and thereafter the heat treatment is continued at 750 to 9500C.
For certain areas of application, however, in which the degree of creep must be very low, the alloys can be used in the not fully hardened state. An alloy is not fully hardened if the maximum achievable hardness has not yet been reached due to premature discontinuation of the heat treatment. However, such an alloy can also be referred to as a precipitation-hardened alloy. It has been found that the degree of creep in this still incomplete hardening state is lower than in the case of maximum hardening.
In general, the duration of the heat treatment depends on the temperature at which it is carried out. In practice, however, the treatment temperature for each special alloy is usually chosen so that the maximum hardness is achieved within a certain time. A heat treatment time of 20 hours was considered technically acceptable and the temperature chosen accordingly. However, as can be seen from Fig. 4 of the drawing, the alloys can be made to have higher hardness levels if they are used at lower temperatures for an extended period of time. hardens.
The quantitative ratio of the alloy components can change within wide limits in a predetermined manner, which will be explained in more detail below. But since he keeps forgeable alloys, it is necessary not to let the molybdenum content rise above 20%.
The alloy can contain 16 to 28% chromium, 20 to 60% nickel, 4 to 20% molybdenum, up to 3% manganese and the remainder iron and no more than 1% impurities such as carbon and deoxidizing agents such as silicon, vanilla dium, titanium and / or aluminum. The manganese content improves the machinability.
The molybdenum content is not present in the alloy according to the invention. chosen below 4% to ensure precipitation hardening property, since molybdenum in an amount of 4 to 20% has been found to be a very effective agent for precipitation hardening of the alloy. While Mo lybdenum is used as the precipitation hardening agent, the other alloying elements have an effect on other properties of the alloy, which is why it is advisable to always carefully match the ratio of the components in the alloy, as will be explained below .
According to the invention, the carbon content of the alloy is at most 0.20%, since it has been found that a carbon content of more than 0.20% has a harmful effect due to the formation of carbide with chromium and molybdenum, whereby the oxidation resistance and the response to the precipitation hardening treatment is reduced will.
The minimum nickel content is given as 20% if the alloy obtained is to have a completely face-centered cubic structure. Although the upper limit of nickel was given as 60% in the foregoing, for economic reasons it is preferable to use 52% as the upper limit of the nickel content in those cases in which chromium and molybdenum are introduced into the alloy in the form of iron alloys. However, it may be desirable to form the alloys of the present invention from pure chromium and molybdenum.
The main purpose of the chromium is to give the alloy corrosion and oxidation resistance. It was found that not. Less than 16% chromium is necessary to give the alloy the desired resistance to oxidation and corrosion and to allow its use at temperatures of up to <B> 8700 </B> C. The upper chromium limit of 28% is due to the fact that no further improvement in tensile strength and other desirable properties can be achieved if the chromium content is increased beyond this limit.
In general, it is advisable to keep the chromium content, which is necessary to achieve high corrosion and oxidation resistance of the alloy, greater than [27-02 (% Ni)]. However, the chromium content actually required for a specific use depends not only on the nickel but also on the service temperature and the service life required at this temperature.
The chromium and molybdenum can easily be introduced into the melt during the alloy formation if a 70% iron-molybdenum and a 70% iron-chromium alloy are used. Such alloys are available and more economical than adding pure metals to achieve the desired molybdenum and chromium content.
When using such iron alloys as an introducer for molybdenum and chromium, the combined iron content is 0.43 (% Mo +% Cr). It is evident that the cost of the alloy decreases as the iron content increases. However, it has been found that the best physical properties are obtained with a low iron content.
Representatives of alloys that are within the above ranges are listed in the following Table I,

Hardness determined with a diamond pyramid according to Vickers. Each of the alloys listed in the table above contains about 0.4% silicon and about 0.1% carbon. The rest of the alloys consist of: Iron with negligible amounts of deoxidizing agents and other impurities. The heat treatment used consists of quenching the alloys at 11500 C and subsequent heat treatment at 850 to 950 C. In Fig. 4 of the drawing, typical hardness curves for a representative of the alloys according to the invention are shown.
These curves relate to the alloy Ihr quenched from 11500 C. 4111 in table I, with curves 11, 7.3 and 15 indicating the hardness of the alloy due to heat treatment at 850, 900 and 950 C after certain treatment times. As shown, the maximum hardness for this special alloy is reached after 20 hours at a treatment temperature of 9501) C.
During the heat treatment of the alloys, the treatment temperature at which the maximum hardness is reached after 20 hours was precisely determined. This temperature is shown in Table I as the characteristic temperature. This characteristic temperature gives a point of reference for the relative heat resistance of the alloy group in its entirety, as well as for the relative resistance of the individual alloys.
It understands. that the variable content of nickel, chromium and molybdenum is based on Effective molybdenum content in percent = 1 / a [% Mo --f- 0.8 (% Cr) - {- 0.75 (% Mn) __ 0.25 ( % Ni) -1.5]. The formula shows that the elements chromium and manganese increase the hardening effect of the molybdenum and the nickel reduces it.
In Table II below, the effective molybdenum content is given as a percentage for the alloys listed in Table I, as calculated using the above formula:

In order to bring these elements into relation with one another with regard to hardness, an empirical formula was derived, the conditions of which must be met if the alloys according to the invention are to have the desired precipitation hardenability and the required properties with regard to forgeability.
In this formula is the respective contribution of molybdenum; Chromium, manganese and nickel are quantitatively evaluated for their ability to harden by precipitation and a value is calculated from this which, for reasons of expediency, is given as a percentage of the effective molybdenum content.
This formula is as follows:

9 <SEP> good In Fig. 1 of the drawing, the respective hardness of the alloys listed in Table I is entered through heat treatment at 8500 C as a function of the actual molybdenum content. It can be seen that there is no fixed relationship between the hardness after the heat treatment and the actual molybdenum content. The spread is the result of the effect of the changing contents of nickel, chromium and manganese on the precipitation hardening.
Uses. However, if the empirical formula for the effective molybdenum content is obtained, as curve 10 in FIG. 2 shows, a well-defined relationship between the maximum hardness and the effective molybdenum content is obtained.
Similar results are found when the effective molybdenum content is related to the hardness of the alloys that were quenched from 11500 C and then heat treated at 850 or 9500 C. Curves for this ratio are shown in Fig. 3, in which curve 12 shows the hardness of the alloys quenched from 11500 C as a function of the effective molybdenum content,
Curve 14 shows the hardness of the same alloys after quenching from 11500 C and heat treatment at 8500 C and curve 16 represents the hardness of the alloys after quenching from 11500 C and heat treatment at 9500 C. It can be seen from these curves that the effect of precipitation hardening begins at an effective molybdenum content of around <I> 6 </I> Jo and is not very noticeable up to around 8 Jo. It is therefore preferable not to choose the lower limit of the effective molybdenum content below 8 Jo.
In Table II, the alloys of Table I are listed in the order of decreasing effective molybdenum content, so that the relationship between the forgeability and the effective molybdenum content can be seen. It was found that with regard to the effective molybdenum content, a distinctive boundary line can be drawn between the alloys with poor and good forgeability,
which is at an effective molybdenum content of 11.5. It is therefore advisable to restrict the upper limit for the effective molybdenum content to <B> 117 </B>, since alloys with more than <B> 117 </B> effective molybdenum contain an excessive proportion in the quenched state have undissolved, hardening components.
As can be seen from FIG. 3, the hardness in the quenched state increases rapidly with contents of effective molybdenum of more than 11% to a value which greatly reduces the machinability and consequently greatly impairs the usability of the alloy. For the reasons mentioned, it is therefore desirable to keep the effective molybdenum content between 8 and 117.
Although all alloys in the above range, which correspond to the conditions of the equation for the effective Mo lybdenum content, have good corrosion resistance and high strength, it has been found that certain of these alloys have an exceptionally high strength of over 2020 kg / cni = have temperatures of about 870 C at higher Tem.
Numerous tests have shown that these alloys have compositions which are within the following, narrower limits: 30 to 60,0,5 'nickel, 16 to 28 luol chromium, 8 to 20% molybdenum and up to 3% manganese , less than 0.20% carbon, the remainder iron and \ impurities. Such alloys meet the conditions that are required by the formula mentioned for the effective molybdenum content.
Expansion tests carried out at 8700 C, which were carried out at a flow rate of 0.017 em / cm per minute, resulted in the values given in Table III below for a number of alloys with the compositions given below:

have only been included in Table III for comparison purposes, in order to show the effect of the molybdenum content in solid solution on the tensile strength of the alloy.
In order to achieve the maximum hardness, the alloys were subjected to heat treatment for 20 hours and stabilized for a further 20 hours at 8700C. From Table III it can be seen that some alloys exhibited a strength of less than 2000 kg / cm @ at 8700 C, in spite of which they correspond to the conditions of the formula for the content of effective molybdenum.
It has been found that at these high temperatures the tensile strength depends mainly on the molybdenum content in the solid solution. and that precipitation hardening is more effective at lower temperatures. In the deterred state. the molybdenum content of the solid solution approaches the molybdenum content of the alloy and then decreases during the heat treatment by the amount of the precipitated molybdenum.
When the heat treatment is continued until full equilibrium. would, the molybdenum content of the solid solution would be reduced to an amount corresponding to an effective molybdenum content of 6%. In practice, however, the heat treatment is only carried out up to the maximum hardness, at which point it is estimated that 50% of the excretable molybdenum or the content of the active 3-molybdenum which is reduced by 6% is excreted.
During heat treatment until the maximum hardness is reached, the molybdenum content in the solid solution can therefore be calculated from the following equation: 70 Mo in solid solution =% Mo -1/2 (excretable Mo) or Mo in solid solution =% Mo - (% effective molybdenum - 6%).
If the formula for the effective llolybdenum is used in the latter formula, the calculated? 70 content of 11o in solid solution = 1 //, [% Mo - 0.8 (% Cr) - 0.75 (% Mn) -f-0.25 (% Ni) - [- 13.5].
From the following table IV, in which the value calculated from the above formula for the molybdenum content of the solid solution and the tensile strength at 87Ö0 C are given, it can be seen that those alloys have a tensile strength of more than 2020 kg / cm2, whose ratio of the components results in a calculated molybdenum content of the solid solution that is greater than 6%.

if it should have the required strength and good visibility. The alloys of this group, which correspond to the two conditions mentioned, have a high creep strength. As a specific example, reference should be made to the alloy designated M-156 in Table III, which has a minimum creep rate of 2.4 × 10-4 cm / cm per hour at 6500 ° C. and a tensile load of 2820 kg / em =.
In cases in which the manufacturing costs of the alloy must be taken into account and the alloy should not be exposed to temperatures higher than 8000 C during use, it can have a composition within the following limits: 20 to 40% nickel, 16 up to 28% chromium, 4 to 10% molybdenum, up to 3% manganese, the remainder iron and no more than 170 other elements.
Even in these more economical alloys, the composition must have a relationship between the components that corresponds to an effective molybdenum content of between 8 and 11% if it is to have good forgeability and good strength at temperatures up to 8000 C . Some representatives of alloys of this group are listed in Table V below. The tensile strengths listed in Table V above have been achieved at 7600 C.
The flow rate was 0.017 em / cm per minute. The alloys were heat treated to maximum hardness for 20 hours and stabilized at 7600 ° C. for 20 hours.
Additions of silicon and titanium in small amounts cause an increase in precipitation hardening of the alloy. This is based on the fact that these elements reduce the quality of the solubility of the molybdenum and increase the amount of the precipitated molybdenum.
It has been established through numerous tests that additions of silicon and / or titanium in larger amounts than would be required for the deoxygenation, preferably up to 2.5% silicon and / or <I> 3 </I>% titanium , in the alloy on precipitation hardening

It goes without saying, of course, that when exerting influence, the. added to that of the chromium and manganese additives. It is then advisable to add a further formula to the formula for the effective molybdenum content in those cases in which the alloy contains silicon and / or titanium as essential alloy components.
This formula can be as follows: 1 [% Mo -f- 0.8 (% Cr) -J.- 0.75 (% Mn) -j- 1.6 (% Ti) -f- 1.2 (% Si) --- 0.25 (% Ni) -2] = 8-11 (<B> 11 </B>).
In the following Table VI a number of representatives for alloys containing silicon and / or titanium are enumerated with some of their properties, the remainder of the alloy consisting of iron and no more than 1% impurities. if no titanium is present, the titanium factor in the formula becomes zero and therefore does not have to be taken into account.
By using the formula, the optimal compositions can be determined from an unlimited number of possibilities that are given for the various alloy components, whereby the possible combinations are limited to a relatively small number of correctly composed mixtures.
The stated tensile strengths were determined at 6500 ° C., with a flow rate of 0.017 cm / cm per minute. The alloys subjected to precipitation hardening, containing silicon and / or titanium in the specified amounts, are particularly valuable at temperatures in the vicinity of 6500 C, at which the precipitation hardening effect prevails, in contrast to those alloys that are used for the Use at higher temperatures up to about 8500 C are provided, at wel chen the amount of molybdenum present in the solid solution is of primary importance.
The relatively small amounts of silicon and / or titanium replace a larger amount of molybdenum, which results in a cheaper alloy with little or no tensile strength ratio at temperatures above 650 ° C.
As soon as the price does not play a decisive role, an alloy with the following composition can be used with advantage: 59, w, nickel, 20% chromium, 20% molybdenum, <B> 0.6% </B> manganese, the remainder being deoxidizing agent and impurities. It has been found that such an alloy, cast as described above, can be subjected to precipitation hardening to have a hardness of 300 D. P.11. reached.
If a maximum strength at 8700 C is to be achieved in malleable alloys, one can use a composition as indicated under No. 4545 in Table I. In these two alloys, iron is only present as an impurity.
In these types of alloys, the mixing ratio is preferably kept within the limits of 52 to 60% nickel, 16 to 28% chromium, 8 to 20% yIolybdenum, up to 3% manganese and less than 1% iron, the ratio of the components being such that the effective = Same Mol @ -hdängelialt 8 to 11 and the calculated molybdenum content in solid solution is more than 6% '.
All of the past alloys contain Man gan to improve their machinability. Cobalt can also be present in the alloys mentioned, since the nickel available on the market usually contains about <B> 17 </B> cobalt.
The alloys according to the invention predominantly have a cubic, face-centered crystal structure and are extremely resistant to corrosion. and. high strength at high temperatures. The alloy composition can be adapted to the temperature at which the alloy is to be used industrially and the permissible price.
The alloys with a higher nickel content, which are listed in various special compositions in table <B> 111 </B>, and their components have a ratio that meets the requirements of the formulas for the effective molybdenum content and for the molybdenum in solid solution are particularly suitable for use in gas turbines, in which alloys with relatively high tensile strength and high resistance to oxidation must be used.
Furthermore, these alloys are particularly suitable for use in turbine parts in which the temperature drop extends from a maximum down to room temperature and the turbine parts are exposed to stresses that are in an inverse proportion to the temperatures. These alloys have a considerable strength at all temperatures up to 870 C and have the advantage over the previously known alloys that the strength can even increase when approaching 8700 C.
All alloys according to the present invention have a thermal stability at the working temperatures that exceeds the usual level, which results in a particularly long service life when used in technology.
