Voltage meter, especially for distance measurement according to the back jet principle.
The invention relates to a measuring device for measuring voltages on the basis of the comparison of the voltage to be measured with a locally generated, adjustable voltage. Although the invention has a wide field of application, it can be used particularly advantageously for measuring distances by the back beam method, and exemplary embodiments of the invention are therefore explained below in this context.
Arrangements for distance measurement according to the back beam method are already known, the receiver part of which supplies a direct voltage directly proportional to the distance to be measured, which is then compared in a measuring bridge with an adjustable direct voltage. If the two voltages compared with one another are not equal, a motor is set in rotation by the measuring bridge, which adjusts the adjustable DC voltage to the voltage to be measured, whereby the size of the change in the adjustable voltage required for this is a measure of the distance to be measured. Such arrangements usually contain two identically designed amplifier channels which are connected between corresponding points on the measuring bridge.
In order for the measuring arrangement to work reliably, the gain in these two channels must be completely the same at all times.
This requirement makes it necessary to readjust the gain frequently.
The blower device according to the invention is characterized in that, in addition to the aforementioned adjustable voltage, a third, also locally generated voltage is used, the magnitude of which changes periodically over a voltage range that includes both the voltage to be measured and the adjustable voltage, whereby this third voltage brings about an adjustment of the adjustable voltage to the voltage to be measured as soon as its magnitude is temporarily in a predetermined ratio to the magnitude of one of these two voltages.
Embodiments of the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings.
1, 3 and 5 represent different exemplary embodiments of the measuring device according to the invention, and FIGS. 2 and 4 show diagrams used to explain the mode of operation of the arrangement according to FIGS. 1 and 3.
The distance measuring device according to FIG. 1 contains an antenna system 10, 11 which is connected to a combined transmitting and receiving device 12. This consists of a transmitter suitable for sending out pulses and a receiver for receiving the from a distant object, z. B. from an aircraft 13 reflected pulses or returned response pulses. The device 12 supplies an output equilibrium span e2 (FIG. 2), the size of which is proportional to the time which the pulses need to get from the measuring device to the aircraft and from there back to the measuring device. The output voltage mentioned is therefore proportional to the distance between the measuring device and the aircraft.
Such combined transmitting and receiving devices are known per se and therefore do not require any further explanation.
The combined transmitting and receiving device 12 is connected to the input terminals 20 of the actual measuring device 15. This contains a DC voltage source 16, for. B. a battery which is ver with the end terminals of a voltage divider 17 connected. An adjustable direct voltage el (FIG. 2) results between the rotatable arm 18 of the voltage divider and its one end terminal.
Other input terminals 21 of the measuring device 15 are connected to a voltage generator 22, which supplies a periodically variable, for example sinusoidal or sawtooth-shaped voltage, the magnitude of which changes over a voltage range that includes both the DC voltage to be measured e2 and also includes the adjustable direct voltage e, and its frequency exceeds the highest frequency of change of the voltage to be measured e2.
The measuring device 15 also contains means 25 which adjust the voltage e1 to the voltage e2 as soon as the output voltage of the voltage generator 22 corresponds to the lower of the voltages mentioned. These means comprise two diodes 26 and 27, the anodes of which are connected to one another and to one output terminal of the voltage generator 22. The cathode of the diode 26 is connected to the one output terminal of the combined transmitting and receiving device 12 via a resistor 23, while the cathode of the diode 27 is connected to the rotatable arm 18 of the voltage divider 17 via a resistor 24.
The anodes of the diodes 26 and 27 are connected to the anodes of two gas-filled discharge tubes 29 and 30 via a resistor 31. The control grid of the tube 29 is partly connected to the cathode of the diode 26 via a capacitor 32 and partly grounded via a voltage source 35 and a resistor 36, while the control grid of the tube 30 is partly connected via a capacitor 33 to the cathode of the diode 27 in Connection is and, on the other hand, is grounded via a voltage source 37 and a resistor 38.
The cathodes of the tubes 29 and 30 are each grounded via a DC motor 40 and 41. One of these motors is clockwise and the other counterclockwise. The armatures of the two motors are mechanically connected to one another and to the rotatable arm 18 of the voltage divider 17.
With the voltage divider 17 to display means 45 are connected, which indicate the size of the voltage e2. These means comprise a pointer 47 connected to the rotatable arm 18 of the voltage divider and a scale 46. The display means 45 can of course be combined with the voltage divider.
The mode of operation of the measuring device is explained using the curves in FIG.
Here, the straight line A represents the voltage ez that results at the output terminals of the combined transmitting and receiving device 12 as a result of the reception of a reflected or response character originating from the aircraft 13, while the straight line B results in the given position of the arm 18 of the voltage divider 17 between this arm and the voltage el resulting from one end terminal of the voltage divider.
At time t0, diodes 26 and 27 are impermeable due to the voltages fed to their cathodes et lmd e2 and gas-filled discharge tubes 29 and 30 are also blocked by the bias voltages of voltage sources 35 and 37 acting on their control grid.
The curve C represents the sinusoidal output voltage of the voltage generator 92. The magnitude of this voltage supplied to the anodes of the diodes reaches the magnitude of the voltage e1 at time t1 and exceeds it shortly afterwards, whereupon the diode 27 becomes conductive and during the period 11- t5 at the resistor 24 generates a voltage shown by the curve D. At time t2, the magnitude of this voltage supplied to the control grid of tube 30 via capacitor 33 exceeds the value of the ignition voltage of the tubes, so that it is ignited. As a result, a voltage represented by the curve E is applied to the motor 41 during the period t2-t6.
The time t6 is shortly before the end point t7 of the positive half-cycle of the voltage of the voltage generator 22, at which the discharge in the tube 30 is extinguished.
At time t 1, the voltage of the voltage generator 22 fed to the anode of the diode 26 reaches and exceeds the DC voltage e2 fed to the cathode of this diode, so that the diode becomes permeable and at the resistor 23 during the time period t3-t4 a curve F the voltage shown arises. This voltage reaches the control grid of the tubes 29 via the capacitor 32.
Although it exceeds the reverse voltage supplied to the tube 29 by the voltage source 35, there is still no discharge in the tube 29 due to the known difficulties which arise when attempting to ignite two gas-filled discharge tubes connected in parallel. Incidentally, the reduction in the anode voltage of tubes 29 and 30 also contributes to this, which is caused by the fact that the voltage drop across resistor 31 increases as a result of the discharge in tube 30.
In the period of time - only the motor 41 is excited by the control voltage E, and this clockwise motor rotates the arm 18 of the voltage divider 17 so that the voltage el is increased. At time t, the motor 41 comes to a standstill.
During the time period t7-t8, the diodes 26 and 27 are not permeable due to the negative polarity of the voltage of the voltage generator 22 and the motors 40 and 41 cannot be excited. During the positive half-waves of the voltage mentioned, however, the process described above is repeated and the excitation of the motor 41 is continued until the voltage el has become equal to the voltage e2.
When this state is reached, the voltage of the voltage generator 22 can make either the diode 29 or the diode 30 permeable, so that either the motor 40 or the motor 41 is excited and the voltage el is consequently either a little higher or a little lower than the voltage e ... This small difference in the two voltages results in an opposite change in the voltage e1 when the next positive half-wave of the voltage of the voltage generator 22 occurs, which again compensates for the mentioned voltage difference.
In this way, the voltage el is kept permanently at the value corresponding to the voltage e2 and the required change in the voltage el, which is proportional to the distance to be measured, can be read off the scale 46.
In the arrangement according to FIG. 1, the amplitudes of the voltage pulses exciting the motors are completely equal to one another, regardless of how large the respective voltage difference between the voltages et and e3 is. As a result, the motors adjust the voltage divider 17 always at the same speed. In some cases, however, it would be desirable to supply the motors with voltage pulses which are proportional to the size of the difference between the voltages el and e2. so that the adjustment of the voltage divider 17 also takes place at a speed proportional to this voltage difference.
3 and 5 show embodiments of the invention which meet this requirement.
The measuring device 15 'of the arrangement according to FIG. 3 differs from that according to FIG. 1 in that it contains means controlled by the voltage of the voltage generator 22 for comparing the voltages et and ez and for generating a voltage proportional to the difference between these voltages. The Ver equal the two voltages mentioned takes place in the two channels 50 and 80, to which an AC motor 42 is connected with reversible direction of rotation.
The two channels mentioned are identical to each other with the exception of their input circuits and the corresponding parts of both channels are provided with the same reference numerals, the reference numbers denoting the parts of the channel 80 being supplemented by the letter a. The input circuit of the channel 50 contains a rectifier tube 51, the cathode of which is connected via a resistor 43 to one of the input terminals 20 connected to the combined transmitting and receiving device 12, while its anode is connected to one of the input terminals 21 connected to the voltage generator 22. Connection stands. The other input terminal 20 or 21 is grounded.
The input circuit of channel 80 also contains a rectifier tube 51a, the cathode of which is connected to the rotatable arm 18 of the voltage divider 17 via a resistor 43a, while its anode is connected to the ungrounded input terminal 21 together with the anode of the rectifier tube 51. The control grid of an electron tube 52, which is grounded via a resistor 54 and receives its operating voltages from the voltage sources - B and - + S'u, is also connected to the cathode of the rectifier tube 51 of the channel 50 via a capacitor 53.
The tube is normally kept blocked by a bias voltage which results from a resistor 55 connected to its cathode and connected to the voltage source -j-S 'via a resistor 56. The channel 80 contains an electron tube 52a connected in the same way.
The anode of the electron tube 52 of the channel 50 is connected to the control grid of a pentode 57, which receives its anode voltage from the voltage source + B via a resistor 58. The cathode of the pentode receives a somewhat lower voltage from the voltage source + B '. The screen grid of the pentode is connected to a voltage source + Se via the resistor 59, while its braking grid is connected on the one hand to the voltage source + B 'via a resistor 60 and on the other hand is grounded via a resistor 61.
The screen grid voltage of the pentode is dimensioned in such a way that a screen grid current normally flows in the tube, but the anode current in the tube is normally blocked due to the fact that the tube's braking grid receives a slightly lower voltage than its cathode. The channel 80 includes parts 57a-61a corresponding to the above parts of the channel 50. The screen grid of the pentode 57 is connected to the braking grid of the pentode 57a via a capacitor 62, while the screen grid of the pentode 57a is connected to the braking grid of the pentode 57 via a capacitor 62a.
The anode of the pentode 57 is connected to the cathode of a diode rectifier 63 via a capacitor 64. A resistor 65 is connected in series with a network 66 consisting of a resistor and a capacitor between the cathode and the anode of the rectifier 63.
The network is connected between the input electrodes of a normally permeable DC amplifier tube 67, the cathode of which is connected to the voltage source-B, while its anode is grounded via a resistor 68. The anode of the amplifier tube 67 is connected to the control grid of a gas-filled discharge tube 69. The cathode of the tubes 69 is grounded and its anode is connected to one end of the secondary winding 70 of the transformer 71 which is provided with a llittelanzapfung.
The center tap of the secondary winding 70 is connected to the screen grid of the tubes 69 and to the screen grid of the corresponding tubes 69a of the channel 80 and is grounded via the one excitation winding 73 of a phase gap AC motor 42 with reversible direction of rotation. The other field winding 74 of the motor, rotated by 90 ″ in relation to the field winding 73, is connected via a phase gap capacitor 76 to the terminals 77 of an alternator 78 to which the primary winding 75 of the transformer 71 is also connected.
The rotor of the motor 42 is mechanically connected to the rotatable arm 18 of the voltage divider 17.
The mode of operation of the arrangement is explained using the curves in FIG.
The straight line A here again represents that voltage e2 which results at the output terminals of the combined transmitting and receiving device 12 as a result of receiving a reflected or response character originating from the aircraft 13, while the straight line B is in the given position of the arm 18 of the voltage divider 17 between this arm and earth resulting voltage e. At time t0, diodes 51 and 51a are blocked as a result of the voltages e and c supplied to their cathode.
I) The curve C represents the sawtooth-shaped output voltage of the voltage generator 22 in this case. The magnitude of this voltage fed to the anodes of the diodes 51 and 51a reaches the magnitude of the voltage fed to the cathode of the diode 51a as positive bias at time t el and exceeds it shortly thereafter, whereupon the diode 51a becomes conductive and generates a voltage represented by the curve D at the resistor 43a during the period t1-t5.
At time t3, the voltage shown by curve C also exceeds the positive voltage e- supplied to the cathode of diode 51, whereupon this diode also becomes permeable and generates a voltage shown by curve E at resistor 43 during time period t3-t5.
The voltage generated at the resistor 43a is transmitted through the capacitor 53a to the control grid of the tube 52a and loves the bias voltage generated at this control grid by the cathode resistor 55a. As a result, the negative voltage pulse shown by curve F occurs in the output circuit of the tube 52a at time t, which is terminated at time t5.
This negative voltage reduces the screen grid current of the pentode 57a, so that the screen grid voltage of this pentode takes the form of a positive voltage pulse represented by curve G. This voltage pulse reaches the braking grid of the pentode 57 via the capacitor 62a and causes an anode current in this tube, which results in the reduction in the anode voltage of the pentode 57 represented by curve H.
At time t3, the voltage generated at resistor 43 exceeds the bias voltage effective at the control grid of tube 52 and this tube becomes permeable as a result, so that a negative control pulse, represented by curve I, has a duration t3-t5 at the anode of the tube results. This pulse is fed to the control grid of the pentode 57 and, due to its negative polarity, suppresses the anode current flowing in this tube, which was caused at time t1 by the pulse fed to the brake grid of the tube by tube 57a.
As a result, the anode voltage of the pentode 57 increases at time t3, as shown by curve II. At the same time, the screen grid voltage of the tube 57, represented by curve J, is increased and as a result the braking grid of the tube 57a receives a positive voltage pulse which, however, cannot cause an anode current in the tube because the control grid of the tube in the period t1-t5 of the previous one Tube 52a receives a large negative voltage. Under the assumed circumstances, the tube 57a therefore does not deliver an output signal in the period t1-t5. At time t, the control pulses fed to the control grids of the pentodes 57 and 57a end, so that these tubes return to their original state.
The negative pulse H generated at the anode of the tube 57 reaches the rectifier diode 63 via the capacitor 64, makes it permeable and generates a negative control voltage on the network 66 shown by the curve K, which blocks the DC amplifier tubes 67 and a through in their output circuit the curve L causes positive control voltage shown.
As the charge on network 66 decreases, this positive control voltage decreases exponentially. At time t7, the relire 67 becomes permeable again, and the original state of the channel 50 is thus restored.
An alternating voltage is supplied to the anode-cathode circuit of the tubes 69 and 69a from the voltage source 78 via the motor winding 73 and via one half of the transformer winding 70. The positive control voltage supplied to the input circuit of the gas-filled tube 69 by the DC amplifier tube 67 makes the tube 69 permeable at time t, despite its negative bias voltage resulting from the voltage drop across the resistor 68, so that the motor winding 73 has a relatively strong current flowing through it becomes.
This current has such a phase relationship to the current flowing through the motor winding 74 that a rotating magnetic field results from these two currents, which rotates the rotor of the motor 42 in a clockwise direction. As a result, the arm 18 of the voltage divider 17 is also rotated clockwise, which results in an increase in the voltage el. At time t, the permeability of the tube 69 ceases and the tube is deionized, so that the current flowing through the motor winding 73 is interrupted.
A certain time after the point in time t7, the magnitude of the sawtooth-shaped voltage supplied by the voltage generator 22 again reaches the now given magnitude of the voltage ej, whereupon the previous process is repeated. This game is continued until voltage el has become equal to voltage e2. However, since the difference between the voltages 61 and e2 decreases more and more during this time, the energy content of the current pulses supplied to the motor winding 73 also decreases more and more, so that the motor executes ever smaller rotary movements.
The fact that the energy supplied to the motor 42 changes proportionally to the difference between the voltages 61 and e2 can be illustrated with the aid of the dashed parts of the curves shown in FIG. 4. For this purpose, it is assumed that at time to the voltage fed to channel 80 by voltage divider 17 has the value e'l, which is greater than voltage el, but is still lower than voltage e2. This could be the case, for example, after the motor 42 has already brought about a certain approximation of the voltage el to the voltage e2.
From the above explanations it follows that the diode 51a only becomes permeable at time t2, so that the voltage supplied to the control grid of the tube 52a has the form shown by the dashed curve D '.
The voltage supplied to the control grid of the Robre 52, shown by the curve E, however, remains the same as before, so that the tube 52 now also becomes permeable at time t3. The control grids of the pentodes 57a and 57 receive the control pulses shown by the dashed curve F 'and by the solid curve I in the manner set out above. The dashed curve G ′ represents the pulse fed to the braking grid of the tube 57 at time point t2, while the dashed curve II ′ shows the pulse resulting at the anode of the tube 57. As a result, the output voltages of the tubes 63 and 67 assume the forms shown by the dashed curves K 'and L'.
These curves show that the energy supplied to the motor winding 73 is now less than before, it being evident that this energy reduction is proportional to the reduction in the difference between the voltages e2 and e1. This prevents the motor 42 from causing an over-regulation of the voltage E1, which would then make a backward regulation necessary.
If the voltage e, is greater than the voltage e2, a similar process occurs. In this case, the diode 51 first becomes transparent and instead of the pentode 57, the pentode 57a generates a control pulse.
This is fed to the diode 63a, the output voltage of which is amplified by the DC amplifier tubes 67a. This increased output voltage makes the gas-filled tube 69a permeable and leads a current through the motorwheel 73. Since the anodes of the tubes 69 and 69a are connected to the opposite ends of the transformer winding 70, there is a phase relationship between the currents flowing through the motor windings 73 and 74, which results in a counterclockwise rotation of the rotor of the motor 42, which the voltage el is reduced.
If this reduction is not sufficient to fully match the voltage e1 to the voltage e2, the control process is repeated in ever smaller quantities until the full output of the voltage mentioned is reached.
From the above explanation of the mode of operation of the device it follows that the pentodes 57 and 57a represent electron switches which, under the action of the leading edge of the output pulses of the tubes 52 and 52a in one of the two channels 50 and 80, are one of the size of the underside between cause the voltages el and e2 dependent control voltage.
The arrangement according to FIG. 5 corresponds to the part of the arrangement according to FIG. 3 following the capacitors 64 and 64a, from which it differs in that it contains a DC motor instead of the AC motor. The use of such a motor is particularly advantageous on airplanes, since these usually do not have any alternating current. Another advantage of using the DC motor on airplanes results from the higher starting torque of this motor compared to the AC motor, which can be significant when flying in cold areas or at great heights, as the cold reduces the friction resistance in the bearings of the motor and of the rotatable arm of the voltage divider increased.
In the arrangement according to FIG. 5, the anodes of the direct current amplifier tubes 67 'and 67a' are connected to a voltage source + B via the resistors 68 'and 68a'.
The operating voltages of the tubes are selected so that these tubes are normally permeable and, as a result, their anodes normally have approximately ground potential. The voltage source + B is also connected to one pole of the direct current motor 42 ′ via the discharge paths of the electronic switch tubes 90 and 91. The two poles of the motor are grounded via further electronic switch tubes 92 and 93.
The anode of the tube 67 'is connected to the control grid of the tube 90 via a resistor 95 and to the control grid of the tube 93 via a resistor 96, while the anode of the tube 67a' is connected to the control grids of the tubes 92 and 91 via resistors 97 and 98 connected. The resistors 96 and 97 are larger than the resistors 95 and 98. The operating voltages of the tubes 90 to 93 are chosen so that these tubes are normally blocked.
During operation of the arrangement, one of the linear diodes, for example the linear diode 63 ', is made transparent by the negative output pulse of the pentode 57 connected upstream of it (FIG. 3), whereupon it feeds a negative control voltage to the control grid of the DC amplifier tubes 67'.
This blocks the tube 67 'and causes a positive voltage on the control grid of the switching tubes 90 and 93, which makes these tubes permeable. The resistors 95 and 96 limit the possible grid current in the tubes 90 and 93 to a permissible value and the resistor 96 at the same time maintains the voltage supplied to the control grid of the tubes 93 at a value which enables a circuit to be established from the voltage source- + B Discharge path of the tube 90, the motor 42 'and the discharge path of the tube 93 to earth is made possible. As a result, the motor 42 is rotated in such a way that it matches the voltage e to the voltage e,
whereupon the previously mentioned tubes are returned to their original condition. If a negative output pulse arises at the anode of the pentode 57a (FIG. 3), which makes the diode 63a 'transparent and blocks the tube 67a, the switching tubes 91 and 92 become transparent and the motor rotates in the opposite direction.
The prerequisite for the reliable operation of all the embodiments described is, of course, that the periodic change in the voltage represented by curve C takes place faster than the change in voltage e2.
