Legierung.

Alloy. The present invention relates to an alloy, in particular to one which has a high creep and fracture resistance, as well as a high resistance to oxidation at high temperatures.
Various alloys are commercially available, which are built on a nickel base hardened with titanium and have excellent physical properties at temperatures of about 650 ° C. Recently, there has been a need to produce similar alloys which can be forged and machined and which have comparable physical properties at high temperatures in the 730-800C range.
With the present invention, it is possible to create an improved metal alloy which can be forged or otherwise machined and which can be precipitation hardened. This alloy can have good creep resistance and high breaking strength at high temperatures.
The metal alloy according to the invention is characterized in that it contains 32 to 42 nickel, 10 to 23% cobalt, 16 to 25 chromium, 3 to <B> 19% </B> iron, 2 to 4% titanium, 2 to <B> 10 % </B> at least one further metal of the 6th group of the periodic table of the elements, further 0.1 to 1% aluminum, 0.5 to 3% manganese and 0.5 to 2% silicon.
It has been found that alloys of the heat-resistant type can be produced, and these can be given the desired oxidation resistance, high strength, good creep resistance and flexibility at high temperatures of 650 to 800 C by precipitation hardening.
In general, the alloys within the scope of the invention consist of nickel, cobalt, chromium, titanium, molybdenum and iron with minor amounts of manganese, silicon and aluminum, and these alloys can be hardened by precipitation by being subjected to a Lö at high temperatures - Annealing, and then subjected to aging at a slightly lower temperature in order to give them the properties desired at high temperatures.
The proportions of the components of the alloy can vary somewhat and are generally in the range of 32 to 42 percent by weight nickel, 10 to 23 percent by weight cobalt, 16 to 25 percent by weight chromium, 3 to 19 percent by weight iron, 2 to 5 percent by weight molybdenum, 2 to 4 weight percent titanium, 0.5 to 3 weight percent manganese, 0.5 to 2.0 weight percent 0,
1 to 1 percent by weight of aluminum and no more than 1 percent by weight of other elements (impurities and deoxidizing agents).
It was stated above that the molybdenum content can be 2 to 57; but you can replace the molybdenum with tungsten in an amount of 4 to 10%. In practice, when using tungsten, an equivalent amount of tungsten will preferably be used instead of just part of the molybdenum content, so that the alloy obtained has molybdenum and tungsten together.
An alloy of the following composition is considered to be preferred: 32 to 42% nickel, 17 to 23% cobalt, 17 to 21% chromium, 2 to 4% titanium, 2 to 3.5% molybdenum, 0.6 to <B> 0.8% manganese, 0.6 to 0.9% silicon, 0.1 to 0.4% aluminum, while the rest of iron with no more than 1% of the usual Impurities.
Alloys made from 36 to 38% nickel, 19 to 21% cobalt, 17 to 19% chromium, 15 to 18% iron, 3% molybdenum, <B> 2.7% </B> titanium, 0.6 to < B> 0.8% </B> manganese, 0.6 to <B> 0.9% </B> silicon and <B> 0.3% </B> aluminum have extraordinarily favorable properties when they be subjected to precipitation hardening in the manner described below.
In general, the precipitation hardening applicable to the alloys is carried out by quenching the alloys from a solution heat treatment temperature between 950 and 1200 C, at which temperature they can be treated for 1 minute to 8 hours, and by aging at a temperature between 700 and 870 'C </B> for 4 to 50 hours. The solution annealing temperature and the aging temperature depend to a certain extent on the composition of the alloy and on the properties to be imparted to the alloy.
It should be noted that the titanium content is likely to be the decisive factor for imparting the precipitation hardening properties, although the molybdenum content apparently interacts with the titanium to achieve precipitation hardening. In the manufacture of the alloy, titanium is preferably used in the form of a carbon-free ferrotitanium which has an unusually low aluminum content as an impurity.
Such ferrotitanium is commercially available so that the present alloy can be produced with a low aluminum content.
The aluminum content should not be more than <B> 17 </B> in order to achieve good flexibility at a certain creep or break strength. It was also found that in view of the fact that aluminum is very chemically active, if the aluminum content of the alloy is more than 1%, the aluminum has the disadvantage in the representation of the alloys that the properties of the alloys are not or only difficult to improve. With an aluminum content of less than 1%, expediently from 0.1 to 0.4%, the desired properties of the alloys can be achieved very easily.
Molybdenum is also added to the alloy in order to achieve a certain flexibility. With an increasing molybdenum content of 2% upwards, it is observed that the alloy obtained has an increasing resistance to hot forming, so that 5/001 'molybdenum can be regarded as the maximum content which can advantageously be added to the alloy.
Good properties are achieved with a nickel content of 32 to 42/001, a cobalt content of 10 to 231w, and an intrinsic content of 3 to 19%. However, the cobalt content is preferably kept between 17 and 23, and the iron content between 13 and 19.070. In those cases in which the cobalt content approaches the lower limit of 10 / -0, the molybdenum content is expediently shifted towards its upper limit of 5%.
If ferrochrome is used in the production of the alloy, an iron content of 13 to 1970 is usually obtained, while at. Use of pure chromium in the charge, the iron content in the alloy obtained can drop to 3% without affecting the physical properties of the alloy.
The above-mentioned content of chromium, silicon and manganese seems to interact with the molybdenum content in order to prevent the alloy from overaging at operating temperatures of 800 C, as will be described further below, it being understood that the chromium , Silicon and manganese are preferably only used in their maximum amounts when the molybdenum content reaches the lower limit value given above.
In the following table I some preferred alloys, the composition of which is in the range given above, are listed:

All alloys were subjected to a solution heat treatment at 1150 C for 1 hour and then quenched in oil, whereupon they had a mini paint hardness of 150 to 180 DPH and can easily be converted into the desired shape of workpieces such. B. blades for gas turbines and engines with recoil drive, let process.
DPH refers to the so-called Vickers diamond pyramid hardness test, which is a so-called standard method for measuring the hardness of extremely hard metals and consists in applying a standard pressure to the latter for a standardized period with a pyramid-shaped one Diamonds are subjected. The diagonal of the incision made is measured under a microscope and the Vickers hardness value read off from a conversion table.
In the aging treatment of the alloys of this invention, it was found that the maximum hardness can be achieved by aging the alloys at the lower aging temperature for a long time, but that better creep rupture strengths can be achieved with loss of hardness if the alloys are during a shorter period of time at a temperature close to the upper limit value or the upper limit value.
In order to better understand the physical properties obtained during aging of some of the above-mentioned alloys, it should be noted that for the most important applications for which the alloys according to the invention are suitable, a service life of the object at a high temperature of 100 hours is considered sufficient and that the designers believe that plastic strain of up to 1,11,1 'the length of the articles can be tolerated during this period of time.
On this basis and to indicate the properties available with the new alloy, the creep resistance is defined below as the load at which a 1% plastic elongation occurred after 7.00 hours. In the same way, creep strength is defined as the load which leads to breakage after 100 hours, while the elongation at break is defined as the plastic elongation of the alloy, which, under this load, breaks after <B> 100 </B> hours goes ahead.
With reference to the following Table II, it should be noted that in all cases the alloys were aged for 20 hours at the stated aging temperature, after which they were tested for hardness. Some of the alloys were then stabilized for 20 hours at the specified test temperature, the hardness values after the stabilization treatment being entered in those cases in which a stabilization treatment was carried out. In the case of the test piece R99A, the aged alloy was stabilized for 20 hours at 730 C instead of the test temperature of 650 C.
The test temperatures, the creep resistance (load at <B> 17, </B> elongation after 100 hours), the creep rupture strength and elongation at break and the degree of hardness after the test are listed in this table.

Which test pieces have the composition of the alloy R99 in Table I, it can be seen that the three test pieces which were aged at <B> 785 '</B> C have a lower elongation at break than those alloys which have been aged at <B> 8151 </B> C were aged without achieving an increase in creep resistance. The same observation was made in many other examples, which is why the alloys are expediently aged at 815 C or more with subsequent stabilization treatment for 20 hours or more at a temperature which is expediently between 700 and 760 C.
The combination of the aging treatment above <B> 785 '</B> C and the stabilization treatment described result in a marked increase in the elongation at break and the creep rupture strength of the alloys treated in this way.
When carrying out the precipitation hardening treatment, the ultimate use of the alloy must be taken into account for the solution annealing of the alloy. If, for example, the alloy is used for a purpose in which an operational malfunction is to be feared as a result of creep or fracture, a solution heat treatment between 1100 and 1200 ° C for about 1 hour is necessary to produce the correct grain size which essentially correspond to the grain size of No. 2 to 5 ASTM, i.e. H. 32 to 256 grains per mm =, has been shown to be effective.
Such a grain size increases the resistance of the alloy to creep or breakage.
If, on the other hand, a malfunction due to alternating voltages is to be feared, the alloy should expediently have a fine grain size between No. 5 and No. 8 ASTM, i.e. H. 256 and 2048 grains per mm =, although this results in a certain loss of creep resistance at 81-5'C in favor of higher fatigue strength at lower temperatures of 650 to <B> 700 "C </B> must be taken.
Such a fine grain size can be obtained in that the solution annealing takes place between 980 and 1150 ° C., the duration of the treatment being inversely related to the temperature and, at a low temperature, about 1 hour up to about 5 Minutes at a higher temperature. Aging at a temperature between 730 and 870 C is advantageous.
The solution annealing temperature used also depends on the titanium content. At an operating temperature of 650 ° C. it was found that the minimum allowable value of the Bruehdehiiung for a 100 hour life should be about 3%, since the alloys of the invention are very sensitive to stress at lower values.
The tests have shown that when a solution heat treatment of 1150 ° C is used, the maximum permissible hardness to achieve the required elongation at break is around 290 DPH, with a maximum of <B> 2.9% </B> titanium at a Aging of the alloy at 815 ° C, the resulting alloy having a creep strength of 1970 kg / cm2 at 815 ° C.
If the alloy contains 2.3 to 2.9 titanium, it is expediently subjected to solution annealing at 1150 "C and aged at 815 C. If the operating conditions require solution annealing at 980 C, the titanium content can be up to 4 %, while in a solution annealing at 1200 C the titanium content can be lowered to 2% in order to achieve alloys of the desired properties.
If the solution heat treatment is carried out at a temperature between 980 and 1150 C, good creep and strength properties can be obtained if the alloy contains up to 3% titanium and is aged at a temperature between 700 and 770 C,
as long as the alloys containing up to 3% titanium are quenched from the lower solution annealing temperature and the alloys containing up to 21/2 titanium are quenched from the solution annealing temperature of 1150 ° C. In the case of the aging treatment just described, it is found that a further stabilization with a lower one.
Temperature, as described above, in connection with the higher veining treatment above 785 C, is not necessary in order to achieve the required creep and strength properties.
The alloys described are not overaged if they are subjected to operating temperatures of 815.degree. C. for about 1000 hours, provided the molybdenum content is close to 5%. If the molybdenum content is around 2% or if it approaches this value, there is a marked tendency towards overaging.
This tendency can be countered with success by increasing the chromium, silicon, or manganese content to the above-mentioned upper limit values at the expense of the nickel content in accordance with the reduction in the molybdenum content.
The alloys according to the invention are suitable for the production of the most varied types of objects which require good oxidation and creep resistance at high temperatures of 650 to 81.5.degree. A particular example of such objects are blades for gas turbines and jet drives.
They are also suitable for permanent molds for casting copper alloys or as a mandrel in the manufacture of seamless tubes or forged parts. A special application of the alloy consists in the use of the same for the production of motors for maximum temperatures and in the loading of rotors, in which the blades are made from the peripheral part of the same.
In the manufacture of these objects, the alloy in the form of billets can easily be forged into the approximate shape of the object to be manufactured. The solution annealing is used here on the forged workpiece and, if machining is necessary, the solution annealed, forged workpiece is preferably machined before the aging treatment.
If the workpiece is formed by machining rather than a forging operation, it is advantageous to perform solution annealing prior to machining. In most cases, the final machining of the workpiece is done before the aging treatment.
