Ferner kön nen alle erfindungsgemässen Legierungen durch eine einmalige Wärmebehandlung ge härtet werden, welche darin besteht, dass man die Legierung auf eine Temperatur erhitzt, welche zwischen 650 C und dem Schmelz punkt der Legierung liegt, und hierauf genü gend langsam kühlt, um ein Härten zu verur sachen, beispielsweise jeweils um 5 bis 50 C pro Minute, wobei die Abkühlungsgeschwin digkeit durch die Zusammensetzung der Le gierung bestimmt ist;

A method for producing a hard copper alloy and a copper alloy obtained by this method. The invention relates to a method for producing a hard copper alloy which contains nickel and manganese.
According to the invention, the hard copper alloy is obtained by subjecting a copper alloy with a nickel content of 5 to 30 / 11.7 and a manganese content of 5 to 30 to a heat treatment in order to effect precipitation hardening. The nickel and the manganese are expediently present in practically equal amounts. The proportion of nickel and manganese can be varied within the specified range depending on the required properties of the finished alloy.
Although it has been found that optimum hardness is achieved when the nickel and manganese content are present in equal amounts, it has nevertheless been observed that the aforementioned ratio is deviated from with steadily increasing amounts of nickel and manganese without undue loss of hardness can.
The heat treatment causing precipitation hardening can vary depending on the composition of the alloy. All alloys can be obtained in a soft state by heating to a temperature between 650 C and the respective melting point of the alloy, that is to the temperature of the solution heat treatment, and by subsequent quenching. The minimum solution annealing temperature increases with increasing manganese and nickel content.
The preferred solution annealing temperature is 750 to 850 C, but in certain cases, especially if there are certain impurities in the alloys, an increased solution annealing temperature of 850 to 950 C can be used. The heat treatment temperatures will of course vary depending on the alloy under consideration. It was found that at the best temperature in each case, the solution treatment is completed within a period of two hours, while the treatment time can be shortened when using a higher solution heat treatment temperature, so that, for. B. with a treatment at 900 C a duration of one hour will suffice.
The alloys can also be kept in a soft state by cooling more slowly, but it is necessary that the cooling is fast enough to ensure over-saturation. For example, the alloys can be cooled from the optimum solution annealing temperature to an intermediate temperature of 600 to 750 C, for example, at a rate sufficient to maintain the over saturation, for example 5 to 25 C per minute. and then put off from this temperature to room temperature.
Alloys which are obtained in a soft state using such cooling conditions are hardened to 300 to 600 ° C. by subsequent reheating.
Furthermore, all alloys according to the invention can be hardened by a single heat treatment, which consists in heating the alloy to a temperature which is between 650 ° C. and the melting point of the alloy, and then cooling it slowly enough to harden cause things, for example in each case by 5 to 50 C per minute, wherein the Küühlungsgeschwin speed is determined by the composition of the alloy;
in general, the rate of cooling required decreases as the nickel and manganese content increases and may vary depending on the initial degree of supersaturation.
The hardness finally obtained and the increase in hardness of these hardening alloys can be increased by cold working the alloy in its soft state and by subsequent heating to 300 to 600 C depending on the composition of the alloy and depending on the cold working.
When producing the alloys according to the invention, one or more additional elements, e.g. B. magnesium, phosphorus, chromium, silver, silicon, barium, calcium, cadmium or tin, in small amounts up to 5% of each, and aluminum up to 0.5%, for example, to deoxidize the alloys but the additives should not exceed 10%.
If it is also mentioned that these additives can be present in amounts of up to 5% per additive, an addition of a much smaller amount will usually suffice. Impurities that can be present in the alloys in small amounts without damaging their properties are iron, zinc, lead, carbon and sulfur.
The best hardening effects in alloys according to the invention are achieved when nickel and manganese are present in essentially the same amounts. The optimum proportions of nickel and manganese can, however, vary slightly depending on the properties of the additional elements or the main impurities present. The manganese used in the alloys should have a high degree of purity, so that, for example, electrolytically produced manganese or commercially available cupromanganese is used.
In the following Table I examples of alloy compositions according to the invention are given with corresponding values in terms of cold working, heat treatment and the hardness of these alloys. For comparison purposes, similar values are given in Table II for other alloys in which the percentages of nickel and manganese are substantially different from one another. All the alloys given in these tables were heated to 900 C for one hour and then quenched from this temperature in cold water.
The alloys were then heated with or without cold machining by rolling (for the purpose of achieving a hardening effect) by annealing to temperatures which are given for the specified period of time.

<tb> 50 <SEP> 192 <SEP> 400 <SEP> 224 <SEP> 272 <SEP> 48 The values given in Tables I and II clearly show
that for a certain amount of nickel and manganese a greater hardness is achieved when the nickel and manganese content is the same as when one or the other of these elements is present in larger amounts. Although a great increase in hardness is achieved by precipitation hardening without cold working, further hardening can be carried out by combining cold working and subsequent precipitation hardening.
Provided that the manganese and the nickel are present in essentially the same amounts, the achievable hardness increases with increasing nickel and manganese content within the range described above. All alloys according to this invention are sufficiently ductile prior to precipitation heat treatment and can easily be cold worked.
It has been determined that particularly good properties are achieved with alloys which contain 7 to <B> 1770 </B> nickel and 7 to 17.177o manganese.
In addition to the pronounced precipitation hardness properties, the alloys obtained have other valuable properties, such as high tensile strength and good resistance to corrosion. In addition, they can easily be processed in a soft state either by deformation or by machine.
The alloys are particularly suitable for use at medium temperatures under corrosive conditions. As an indication of the extensive field of work for which the alloys obtained can be used with advantage, their use for the production of valves, springs and no sparks producing tools with cutting edges should be mentioned, for example.
