Process for the production of mortar or concrete. The hydraulic binders, which are processed with water and aggregate to mortar or concrete, have been tried to improve various Lich. The most important improvements were aimed at improving the plasticity of the fresh mortar or concrete without having to increase the amount of water.
Since the properties of the hardened products are very strongly dependent on the amount of mashed water, a reduction in them improves various important physical properties, such as compressive strength and flexural strength, and a reduction in shrinkage aims. Substances that have so far been proposed for this purpose were mainly wetting agents or dispersants, but mostly compounds with. both properties.
The use of dispersers with cement is based on the assumption that the cement particles agglomerate. By eliminating some of the forces between the particles, a dispersion and thus an improvement in plasticity can come about.
The following most important are proposed as substances which mainly act as dispersants. : condensation product of naphthalene sulfonic acid with formaldehyde, the most varied of lignin derivatives, protein degradation products, oxyacids. As, wetting agents, which reduce the surface tension of water strongly, have been proposed:
Lignin sulfonic acid, fatty alcoholsulfonates. Cement-dispersing additives such as wetting agents mainly have a physical effect by influencing the surface forces. The solid part is in the mortar or concrete.
With a single exception, the proposed substances that have a dispersing and wetting effect more or less reduce the surface tension of water. The consequence of this is the development of air bubbles or foam, which have an adverse effect on the strength properties. Despite the reduced amount of preparation water, however, concrete or mortar does not produce the expected higher strength due to the increased air lock.
The inventor has now found that organic substances that form soluble alkaline earth complex salts with alkaline earth ions, preferably with calcium or magnesium ions, in the production of mortar or concrete using alkaline earth binding agents, both the plasticity of the mortar or concrete during processing, how to influence the later properties of the same in a favorable manner.
These substances show the characteristic that they react chemically with calcium to form a soluble calcium complex salt from which the calcium cannot be precipitated with the common calcium-precipitating anions such as carbonic acid, oxalic acid, fatty acid.
As a sol.o chemical compounds, both as free acids and as. Salts, preferably as alkali salts, have a beneficial effect on hydraulic binders, have been found:
a) Compounds with the atom grouping of the amino acids which contain melur as a carboxyl group in the a position. with the general formula: R. N (CHZ. COOH) 2, where R is hydrogen or any organic radical, e.g. B. an acetic acid residue means.
Examples: Nitrilotriacetic acid, ethylene diamine - T @ etraacetic acid, imino @ diacetic acid, 1Vlethylimino @ acetic acid, anthrauilic acid-diacetic acid, uramil-7,7-diacetic acid.
b) Catechol isulfonic acid. e) sodium citrate.
The formation of soluble complex salts of any chemical substance with calcium can easily be determined in the following way:
In a test tube, 5 cms of a 0.01 molar calcium chloride solution, 2 cm of a 1.0% solution of the substance to be tested for complex salt formation with calcium and 5 cm of 0.05 m. Soda soap solution. If the substance shows the formation of soluble complex salts. so the solution stays clear and foams strongly when shaken.
A gradual cloudiness with complex salt formation can result from excreted soda soap; This precipitate dissolves on heating, while a precipitate of lime soap no longer dissolves in the case of non-complex salt formation.
In contrast to the substances: which form soluble complex salts, non-complex salt formers either precipitate their calcium salt, whereby the solution also foams when the substance is shaken, or if the substance remains dissolved, lime soap precipitates when the soap solution is added. The latter is also insoluble in the heat and the solution does not foam.
The fatty alcohol sulfonates, which have also been suggested as cement additives, which are resistant to calcium ions, do not provide any complement with calcium. They only cause a dispersion of the otherwise flaky lime soap. Mortar or
Concrete made from calcium-containing binders, such as Portland cement, lime, gypsum, in which small amounts of soluble calcium complex salt-forming substances are contained, have a much more plastic consistency when fresh than similar mixtures that do not contain these additives. Such mortars or concretes can be processed with significantly less effort.
Thus, the amount of mixture required for a certain processability can be significantly reduced by using these additives.
in the properties of the hardened material. .effects in an advantageous manner. For the hydraulic binders, it is above all the strengths, the surface properties, the impermeability and the weathering resistance that are advantageously improved.
In particular, the carbonate-free surface that can be achieved compactly and hardens without a layer of sludge is of great advantage. These improved surface properties are particularly effective in the case of concreting undercuts, since they are more vicious without formation. leaky construction joints on the existing,
set concrete or mortar can be concreted on without further manipulation. This results in a great saving in labor, but especially in the unsighted:
The strength and tightness of the construction joints and thus to the advantage of the structure. The addition of the above-mentioned, soluble calcium complexes / salts forming substances to non-hydraulic binders such as Ka1 @ k, gypsum etc.
also has a plausibility-promoting effect in mortars, whereby when using the mix-up, the density of the set bodies of lime is reduced. or plaster of paris is much improved.
The soluble calcium complex salts form the substances also have the great advantage: that they are used during: processing with the binding agents. in concrete and. Do not foam mortar, i.e. do not cause increased pore formation, which cannot be said without exception from the already known plasticizing additives.
Example 1: a) 1 kg of Portland cement and 3 kg of sand with a grain size of up to 4 mm are mowed with 460 cm 'of water to form a mortar. The mortar has a plastic consistency.
b) 1 kg of the same cement and 3 kg of sand 0-4 now, as in example a) who dry mixed with 5 g of ethyl @endiaminetetraacetic acid sodium and stirred with the addition of 41-0 cm 'of water to form a mortar. The mortar shows the same plastic consistency as that made under example a).
The mortars processed into prisms 4.4.16 showed the following strength after wet storage:

Addition to the mixing water will follow. The organic substances, which form soluble alkaline earth complex salts, can also be ground directly in the factory into the binding agent at the d-es @ mn production.
The addition of the named, soluble calcium complex salts forming substances intervenes in the hardening process of the cements. In general, the beginning is delayed somewhat and therefore the strengths are somewhat reduced after 1-2 days.
Additional setting regulators, such as alkaline earth chlorides, aluminum chloride, aluminas, alkali hydroxides, water glass, alkali carbonates, can therefore also be advantageous. Well-known, the ab-ar t 'bind accelerating additives, are not used.
The use of the substances mentioned is in place wherever a high-quality building material is required. However, they can also be used in combination with cement, concrete and mortar sealing additives.
The use of these soluble alkaline earth complex salts together with sealants in the production of mortar or concrete is of particular advantage, since sealants generally reduce the consistency and workability of mortar and concrete.
