EMI0002.0034
avec a, = ampères-tours -de la bobine 1 a2 = ampères-tours de l'a bobine 2. Or: al =g1 i avec i = courant dans une électrode. a2-KzI avec I = courant total. d'où:
EMI0002.0041
On pourra.
I> & =</I> ai <I>-</I> 6d2.
On a: <I>a, =</I> K1 z a.=K.1 avec z = courant dans l'électrode I = courant total dans la cellule d'élec trolyse.
<B>d'où:</B> <I>s</I> =al-a..=K,i-K21.
EMI0005.0017
Si tous les circuits magnétiques sont sem blables, on aura: fl-fz=fn=f comme d'autre part: u1 + UZ + zcn = U on aura: <I>f (Il, 2)</I> + <I>f</I> (I2, <I>2)</I> + <I>f (In,</I> i) <I>= U</I> Comme le courant i est le même pour tous les circuits et comme, s'il y a équilibre,
EMI0005.0038
on aura:
<I>f (Il,</I> i) <I>= f</I> (I!#, <I>2) = f</I> (I., Z) et, par conséquent, à ce moment-là:.
EMI0005.0044
Method and device for adjusting the current distribution between the various electrodes of an electrolytic cell. The operation of an electrolysis cell requires in particular the adjustment of the distance between each electrode and the common cell, so that the distribution of the total current between each of them is uniform.
One can use for this movable frame ampere meters connected with interposition or not of a shunt on each circuit of electrode. But, if the total current is variable, it is very difficult to know quickly which are the electrodes which carry a greater current than the current which should be assigned to them, and which are the electrodes which carry a smaller current.
The method according to the invention, for the correct adjustment of the current distribution between the various electrodes of an electrolysis cell, consists in bringing in, for this adjustment, both the value of the intensity passing through the electrode considered and the value of the ratio between the total intensity passing through the cell and the number of electrodes of this cell.
The subject of the invention is also a device for carrying out this method which comprises a winding through which a current of intensity proportional to the intensity in the electrode considered and another winding through which a current is traversed proportional to the ratio between the total current passing through the cell and the number of electrodes in this cell, the variation in the position of these two windings being used for the purpose of adjusting the distribution of the current between the electrodes.
Fig. 1 represents, by way of example, a first embodiment of the object of the invention, to obtain the permanent measurement of the ratio between the current flowing in an electrode and the current divided by the number of electrodes of the cell.
According to fig. 1, a cross-frame apparatus of known principle is used. One of the frames 1 is subjected to a potential difference proportional to the current flowing through the electrode 10, the other frame 2 to a potential difference proportional to the total current, and this is by means of a shunt 3, this which is the case shown for coil 1, or, which is the case shown for coil 2, by means of a device commonly signed under the name of shunt multiplier.
This apparatus consists of a small converter unit comprising a motor 41 and a dynamo 40. This dynamo has an unsaturated magnetic circuit working in the right part of the magnetism curve and it is excited by a winding 42 supplied by a shunt. 4 traversed by the total current I flowing through the electrolysis cell.
In addition, the resistance of the armature is very low, in this way the proportionality between the voltage at the terminals of the shunt 4 and the current delivered by the dynamo 40 is practically ensured, within the operating limits, and the power delivered. by the dynamo is an important multiple of the power received by the inductor 42.
Instead of such a shunt multiplier, it is possible to use a current transformer consisting of a winding through which the cable conveys the current to the electrodes, this winding itself supplying the circuit of the coils 2. This DC transformer can be of a type known and described, for example, in Swiss patent No. 209381 from the company Brown, Boveri & Cie.
These direct current intensity transformers comprise a magnetic casing, which surrounds the conductor whose intensity is to be measured, and which is interrupted so as to form an air gap in which the moving assembly is located, influenced by the field. magnetic in the casing. This crew automatically adjusts the direct current of an auxiliary circuit de-magnetizing the casing,
in such a way that the magnetomotive force due to the passage of the current in the conductor and acting in the air gap of the carcass is at each time compensated, the intensity of the auxiliary current, which varies in the same direction as the direct current, being a measure of the intensity of the direct current flowing through the conductor.
As shown, coil 2 can be powered by a potentiometer 5, the resistors of which are all connected in series as shown.
In such an apparatus, the angle of deviation O is such that
EMI0002.0034
with a, = ampere-turns - of coil 1 a2 = ampere-turns of a coil 2. Now: al = g1 i with i = current in an electrode. a2-KzI with I = total current. from where:
EMI0002.0041
But the values of K, and K2 can be adjusted by potentiometer 5 5s so that:
EMI0002.0045
n being the number of electrodes.
from where
EMI0002.0047
The apparatus thus indicates directly the ratio between the intensity in the considered electrode and the theoretical intensity which it should take, which is equal to
EMI0002.0051
In the form of a relay, this device can act on coutacts 6 and 7 which can be used for signaling or automatic control.
In accordance with the example shown in fig. 2, we use a differential relay with mobile dres, provided da two windings. reverse winding direction.
One of the frames, 11, is supplied by a potential difference proportional to the current flowing through the electrode 10 in question, either by means of a shunt 3, as in the case shown, or by means of another known device. such as a DC current transformer. The winding 12 is supplied by a potential difference proportional to the current flowing through the total circuit either by means of a shunt, or by means of a shunt multiplier, as shown, or by means of a transformer. direct current intensity.
In these last two cases, the adjustment can be made by means of potentiometers 5 connected in series, as shown, and supplied by the shunt multiplier or the DC current transformer. We will be able to. also use rheostats in series on the windings themselves in parallel on the shunt multiplier or the dc current transformer.
Two opposing springs act in such a way that, when the engine torque is zero, the crew of the rel'a'is is in a middle position. On the other hand, if the motor torque is positive or negative, and the relay assembly closes contact 6 or contact 7 depending on whether the ampere-turns of coil 1 are greater or less than the ampere-turns : of the, coil 2.
Under oe's conditions, the operation of the relay is as follows: either. ai the ampere-turns of coil 1. either a. the ampere-turns of coil 2. and <I> & = </I> ai <I> - </I> 6d2.
We have: <I> a, = </I> K1 z a. = K.1 with z = current in the electrode I = total current in the electrolysis cell.
<B> hence: </B> <I> s </I> = al-a .. = K, i-K21.
The constants Kl and K. are set by potentiometer 5 and it is possible to ensure that:
EMI0003.0021
r ,. being the number of electrodes.
EMI0003.0023
So, when the current i in the considered electrode will be such that:
EMI0003.0024
and the relay will be in equilibrium with contacts 6 and 7 open.
For values of
EMI0003.0027
contact 6 will close and for
EMI0003.0028
it will be the contact 7, and that whatever the value, of the total intensity.
Fig. 3 gives, by way of example, a third embodiment for the remote signaling of a difference existing between the intensity passing through a considered electrode and the value of the ratio between the total intensity in the cell and the number electrodes of this cell, and the desired ratio, and this either from the point of view of a manual control, or with a view to an automatic control.
In the device shown in fig. 3, a magnetic circuit 13 surrounds the winding 14 consisting of a bar connecting the electrode to the power supply and carrying a winding 15 whose ampere-turns are antagonistic to the magnetomotive force generated by the current passing through the central bar 14.
The flux in the magnetic circuit will be zero if we have: a, - Zo with al = ampere-turns of the auxiliary winding 15 = current in the central bar 14. With a shunt multiplier as in the case shown, or a current transformer, with direct current at the transfoamations ratio m, we will have:
EMI0003.0038
with current in the secondary circuit flowing through circuit 15.
If N is the number of turns wound on the toroid and if we do
EMI0003.0040
with n = number of electrodes of the cell, we will have in equilibrium:
EMI0004.0005
So when the current in the central bar 14 will be equal to
EMI0004.0006
that is to say equal to the theoretical current which must cross it, the flux in the torus will be zero.
When
EMI0004.0008
the resulting flow will have a given meaning and when
EMI0004.0011
it will have a reverse direction.
The detection of this flow and its direction is ensured by a magnetic cylinder 16 of axis perpendicular to the central bar 14, on which is mounted a frame 17 traversed by any current which, in the case of FIG. 3a, is taken from the secondary current flowing in the winding 15.
The resulting flow produces a driving torque on the axis of the cylinder, this driving torque having a direction determined by the direction of the resulting flow.
Two opposing springs 13 and 19 limit both the travel of the crew and cause that in the absence of engine torque, the crew remains in a rest position determined by the plane of the movable frame 17 and shown in fig. 3a.
The crew axis drives a changeover contact 6-7 which can be used for signaling or automatic control.
Relays of the above type may or may not be used with auxiliary or timing relays depending on the flow rate. is requested from their contactors and $ 1 rapid engine changes that we want to let go without being alerted.
The device shown fis. 4 can be applied in particular when, for practical or other reasons, it is not possible to use the ohmic drop created along each electrode conductor according to the arrangements given above. In accordance with the example of execution shown in fig. 4, the known principle is used of the change in reactance of a winding mounted on a magnetic circuit which is caused when continuous ampere-turns are superimposed on the alternating ampere-turns by current through the winding.
Each of the conductors connecting the electrode 10 to the power supply is surrounded by a magnetic circuit 21 provided or not with a shielding avoiding the parasitic effect of neighboring conductors, and whose coils 22 placed in series are supplied by a source. with native alternating current.
In the absence of direct current, the current flowing in these windings 22 will be the quotient of the total voltage U by the sum of the reactances of each of the windings mounted on the <I> n </I> magnetic circuits 21 <I > (n </I> being the number of electrodes) the resistance being assumed to be very low compared to the reactance.
At the terminals of each circuit, we can read the voltages u.,%, Un which, supposing the circuits all strictly similar, will be given by:
EMI0004.0053
with L = sum of the reactances of the coils 22.
If a direct current is passed through the rod passing through each magnetic circuit, the reactance of these will decrease as a result of the saturation caused by this continuous flow.
If there is an inequality in the distribution of the current between the electrodes, the voltages u1, u2, un will no longer be equal, their sum being however obviously always equal to U.
It should be noted that one can either ensure that the voltage U is constant, but in this case the alternating current flowing through the magnetic circuits will be variable depending on the reactance of each magnetic circuit, or ensure that the current i is substantially constant, which will place these circuits under better determined magnetic conditions, but will vary the voltage U, the above equations remaining however unchanged.
For detection: of. different distributions, one uses differential relays 23 of known principle, consisting of two movable frames .se moving in the air gap of a permanent magnet. One of the frames, 25, is subjected to a potential difference proportional to the voltage u1, u2 or Un depending on the relay considered, the latter having been rectified by rectifiers 29. The second frames? 6 of all the relays 23 are connected in series and subjected to the potential difference U rectified by means of rectifiers 24.
Two opposing springs mean that the opposing torque is zero when the relay crew is in a middle position. On the other hand, their motor torque is positive or negative and the assembly of a coil of relay 23 closes contact 27 or 28: depending on whether the ampere-turns of coil 25 are greater or less than those of coil 26.
Under these conditions, the operation of the relay is as follows: either al the ampere-turns of the coil 25, or a .. the ampere-turns of the. coil 26, and s = al - a2.
Considering the first electrode 10, we will have:
EMI0005.0017
not. being the number of electrodes of the electrolysis cell considered. From where:
EMI0005.0020
But, by construction, we will have:
EMI0005.0021
The relay crew will therefore be in equilibrium and contacts 27 and 28 open when:
EMI0005.0022
But, at that time
EMI0005.0025
f 1 representing the function binding <B> ml </B> to the current Il passing through the electrode considered and to the alternating current z circulating in the winding of all the circuits.
If all the magnetic circuits are the same, we will have: fl-fz = fn = f as on the other hand: u1 + UZ + zcn = U we will have: <I> f (Il, 2) </I> + < I> f </I> (I2, <I> 2) </I> + <I> f (In, </I> i) <I> = U </I> As the current i is the same for all the circuits and as, if there is equilibrium,
EMI0005.0038
we will have:
<I> f (Il, </I> i) <I> = f </I> (I! #, <I> 2) = f </I> (I., Z) and, therefore, to that time:.
EMI0005.0044
In other words, the relay will be in equilibrium when the direct current flowing through the electrode is equal to the quotient of the total current by the number of electrodes.
On the other hand, one of the contacts will be closed if
EMI0005.0048
and the other contact, if

and that whatever the value of the alternating current i and the function f, a, a condition that one has well: fl-fz = fn = f and that f is linear, within the limits considered.
Contacts 27 or 28 can be used either for a simple indication of the deviations, or for an automatic adjustment of the electrodes.
The devices described above make it possible to predetermine the. effects of anodes by arranging the signaling contacts in a position such that one is alerted for a determined difference between the normal current having to flow through each electrode and a current much lower than this normal current.
In electrolysis cells undergoing the anode effect and comprising several electrodes, it has been observed that the effect. of anode did not appear simultaneously on all the electrodes at the same time, but on the contrary, shortly before the total anode effect occurred, the appearance of the anode effect - on one or the other of the electrodes.
The devices according to the invention allow the predetermination of the effects of anodes by providing them with two series of contacts, the first series being closed by small gaps around the position of free equi and thus serving for automatic adjustment or not. of the depth of immersion, while the second series will signal a significant decrease in the current on any electrode, which is the announcement of an effect of anodes in preparation.
It is possible to use either devices with the two sets of contacts described above, or two devices by electrodes, one adjusted so as to close its contacts for too small deviations, the other so as to close its contacts for a significant decrease in the current on an electrode with a view to observing the desired anode effect.
It is also possible to have this second series of contacts or this second device only on a single electrode, taking care to adjust the latter so that the current passing through it is permanently higher than the current passing through each of the other electrodes. ., which causes a faster electrolysis of the corresponding bath zone and makes it possible to obtain folds early on the appearance of the effect of anodes on the electrode considered.
