Optical system with a spherical mirror and a correction element. In the course of time, various mirror systems for optical imaging purposes have become known. An important advantage of using mirrors is that they are free from chromatic aberrations.
The simplest form of a mirror system is the spherical mirror. This generally has spherical aberrations that make the mirror unusable even with small relative openings.
In the case of a parabolic mirror, the spherical aberration is precisely canceled, so that the relative aperture can theoretically be made as large as desired. In practice, however, you are severely limited in this because the parabolic technique becomes more difficult the larger the relative opening of the mirror. In addition to this disadvantage, the parabolic mirror has the great disadvantage that it adheres to a coma, which means that the field is limited to a few degrees at most.
Schmidt has succeeded in making an important advance in that he has placed a correction element in the center of curvature of a spherical mirror that cancels out the spherical aberration and the astigmatism of the mirror. This enabled Schmidt to achieve a field of about 19 with a relative opening of about 1: 1.4. The introduction of the correction element results in chromatic aberration, but this is small and can be rendered harmless in a manner specified by Schmidt himself. A disadvantage of Schmidt's system is the technical difficulty in producing the correction element, the surface of which has a fourth degree curve as a meridional section.
In addition, the size of the field is not yet sufficient for many purposes.
The system according to the invention has a spherical mirror and at least one correction element, which is curved in the same sense as the mirror and is arranged between the center of curvature of the mirror and the mirror, the correction element being traversed only once by the rays involved in the imaging, and is characterized in that the correction element has spherical boundary surfaces and has the character of a negative meniscus lens, the power of which is at most 20% of the power of the system.
The invention is explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing.
In the following examples of embodiments of the optical system according to the invention, the resolving power is 0.02% of the focal point. The refractive or reflective surfaces are denoted by 1, 2 etc., the curvature raids with r ', r ;, etc. A positive sign means that the surface in question has its spherical side facing the direction of the incident light, a negative sign when its hollow side faces it.
All dimensions are given in mm. In the figures, D represents the diaphragm, C the correction element, S the mirror, M the center of curvature of the mirror and F the axis point of a film carrier, for example a camera. The light comes in from the left. Each time only the half of the system lying on one side of the axis is drawn. In the tables, nD denotes the refractive index for sodium light, v denotes the Abbe dispersion and f 'denotes the focal distance.
It is advisable to move the correction element closer to the focal point of the mirror than to the mirror and the center of curvature of the mirror. All exemplary embodiments meet this condition.
In the first example (Fig. 1) the following data apply:

So that a favorable coma and astigmatism correction was obtained, a diaphragm is arranged here on the side of the correction element facing away from the mirror.
In addition, the center of curvature point of both surfaces of the correction element is arranged at a distance smaller than a quarter of the radius of curvature of the mirror from its center of curvature; in this way an image field correction of 20 has been achieved.
An example of such an arrangement is shown in FIG. 2, all centers of curvature of the optical surfaces coinciding. In this way, an unlimited field of view has been achieved in principle.

For some applications it may be desirable to eliminate the slight color error that the correction element gives to the optical system. To do this, you can achromatize the correction element itself, e.g. B. in that it is designed as two individual lenses cemented together, the two lenses are made of glass, which have the same refractive index for the mean wavelength of the light.
An example of such a system has been shown in FIG. The data are:

Another method for achieving chromatic correction consists in arranging a positive lens C in the optical system on the side of the correction element facing away from the mirror, which lens has a power of at most 20% of the power of the mirror.
In Fig. 4 such a system is formed abge. The data are:

<tb> -135.0 The refractive index of the positive lens and the correction element is 1.518.
The strength of the correction element alone is - 0.67 dptr. and together with the positive lens - 0.226 dptr. As a result of this measure, the diameter of the incident light bundle is first reduced by the positive lens and only increased afterwards by the corrosion element. The diameter of the mirror can therefore be smaller than in the case that no positive lens is used.
In the case of the optical system according to the invention, it can happen that the distance between the image surface and the mirror is greater than the distance between the mirror and the correction element. In this case, a correction element can be used which has an opening in the center, as shown in FIG.
It is advantageous if the image surface of the system coincides with the outer surface of the correction element facing the mirror. In this case it is not necessary to arrange a special image carrier. In this case, the distance between the mirror and this outer surface should correspond to the distance between the mirror and the image surface, as has been shown in FIG.
