Cette constrection présente de nombreux avantages. D'une part, les bourrelets en forme de tore facilitent la manipulation; ils constituent des prises aux extrémités du fût, permettant de le saisir à pleine main, leur forme arrondie évitant tout risque d'écorchure, accident fréquent dans les fûts de construction ordinaire dont les fonds présentent ;
Cylindrical metal barrel.
The object of the invention is a cylindrical metal barrel intended for the transport of liquids, and in particular beer and wine. We know that we use more and more for this transport, enamelled steel drums in the oven, to ensure the liquids transported a good conservation. This type of metal barrels has the double advantage of having a lower cost price than wooden barrels and, due to its cylindrical shape, of being bulky monks than these at equal capacity, which reduces the costs of transport.
Since the appearance of these metal drums, successive modifications have been sought to make their handling easier. The cylindrical barrels have been provided with annular ribs constituting raceways by which they rest on the ground.
These ribs reinforce the drum and prevent the surface of the drum from coming into contact with soil dust or mud.
It has also been proposed, to facilitate handling on the ground and the handling of these drums using lifting devices for loading onto trucks and wagons, to provide in these ribs hand holes distributed at regular intervals over their peri-e. . In this way, it is possible to suspend the barrel by means of two chains provided with hooks passed through two corresponding hand holes of the two ribs.
However, for maneuvering on the ground, such drums, the bottoms of which are generally convex, do not offer any convenient grip either for lateral pivoting or for stacking.
In order to allow the transport of drums with a convex bottom in the vertical position after stacking, it has also been proposed to provide on these bottoms reinforcing flanges giving the drum in the vertical position an annular seat.
However, for maneuvering on the ground, such drums also do not offer a convenient grip either for lateral pivoting or for stacking.
The object of the present invention is a cylindrical metal barrel provided in the middle part of its length with annular ribs constituting rolling paths, characterized in that its bottoms form, by their edges, a torus-shaped bead which protrudes from the cylindrical surface of the barrel, but at a lower height than the raceways and which forms the seat of the barrel in a vertical position.
This construction has many advantages. On the one hand, the torus-shaped beads facilitate handling; they form grips at the ends of the barrel, allowing it to be grasped with full hand, their rounded shape avoiding any risk of scratching, a frequent accident in barrels of ordinary construction whose bottoms present;
unprotected edges; moreover, the barrel has good stability in a vertical position, the torus-shaped bead giving it a seat at the outer diameter of the barrel. On the other hand, the bottoms can have the shape of spherical menisci which allows the free expansion of the liquid, when the barrel remains in station in direct sunlight, eliminates any liquid leakage through the door and avoids, during a drop in air intake temperature - which would be detrimental to its good storage, especially when it comes to wine.
Finally, the bottom being protected by the protrusion of the torus-shaped bead, there is no risk of deforming during loading and unloading, in particular when, in the installation in the holds of ships, the drums come up against the frames.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the cylindrical metal barrel according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
In the embodiment shown, the metal barrel 1, which may have been enamelled in the oven, has concave bottoms 2, in the form of spherical menisci. The lateral surface of the barrel carries on either side of the door 3 and of the diametrically opposed bung 4, two annular ribs 5 which serve as raceways and are pierced with slots 6 or hand holes, allowing the attachment lifting and handling equipment. Each concave bottom 2 forms, by its rim, a torus-shaped bead 7 and a flange 8 by which it is welded to the cylindrical part of the barrel.
This bead, which constitutes a reinforcement of the angle of connection of the bottom and of the cylindrical part of the barrel, protects the bottom, serves as a seat for the barrel erected in a vertical position and constitutes a grip for handling.
