Fig. 5 ist ein erläuterndes Diagramm.
Method and device for transmitting images. The invention relates to a method for transmitting images by means of a modulated high-frequency carrier oscillation, in which the transfer characteristic is given such a shape that a sideband is partially suppressed and the carrier oscillation is set at a point on the inclined edge of the transfer characteristic in which the degree of transmission is <B> 50% </B> of the maximum value.
Here and below, the transfer rate is to be understood as the transmission rate as a function of the frequency, and the transfer rate as the overall gain that occurs in the high and intermediate frequency transmission channels, of which the high-frequency stages of the transmitter and receiver form a part.
Advantages of a method of the type mentioned are described in an article by Poch and Epstein in RCA Review, Volume 1, page 19, 1937 under the title “Partial Suppression of One Side Band in Television Reception”.
The invention has the purpose of utilizing as much as possible the total bandwidth available for the two sidebands; H. to achieve that the highest image stream frequency still transmitted is as high as possible with a certain total available bandwidth.
According to the method according to the invention, this aim is achieved in that the said inclined flank is set in such a way that the ratio of the width of the partially suppressed sideband to the width of the completely transferred sideband is at least 0.2 and at most 0.45 amounts.
The invention is based on the knowledge that the bandwidth allocated to a certain television channel can be used as well as possible with regard to the passage of a maximum image stream frequency by choosing the steepness of the mentioned sloping edge as large as possible, while on the other hand this steepness is off other reasons must not be too great.
If the slope of the flank is greater than a certain amount, then in the image current signal obtained after rectification, sudden transitions from light to dark or vice versa in the image to be transmitted cause disruptive oscillations, as a result of which in a not completely black or white part of the image a sudden Hel a black edge and a sudden decrease in brightness are preceded by a white edge.
Because the mentioned ratio is chosen to be at least 0.2 and at most 0.45, the occurrence. the above-mentioned interfering vibrations are still essentially prevented, but the edge width is better utilized than in the aforementioned, known method in which this ratio is only 0.16.
The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method according to the invention. The same comprises a television receiver, of which an exemplary embodiment is shown in FIG. 6 of the drawing. The remaining figures show: FIGS. 1 and 1a idealized transmission characteristics.
2 to 5 show examples of the transmission characteristics of television receivers for carrying out the method according to the invention.
Fig. 5 is an explanatory diagram. 7 to 10 show transmission characteristics between different points of the television receiver of FIG.
In FIG. 1, curve 1 represents the idealized transmission characteristics of a device for transmitting still or moving images with the aid of modulated high-frequency oscillations, a sideband being partially suppressed.
The course of the transmission characteristics is partly determined by the transmission characteristics of the transmitter and partly by the transmission characteristics of the receiver.
In the embodiment of the device according to the invention described below, a transmission characteristic of the shape indicated by curve 1 is obtained practically exclusively by the transmission properties of the receiver, while the SPrvler signals with the one shown in FIG. the transmission characteristics of the transmitter, emits the displayed frequency range,
wherein the partially suppressed sideband comprises a larger frequency range than that passed by the receiver and the characteristic in the vicinity of the carrier frequency is practically rectangular.
As shown in Fig. La, the transmitted television signals contain a carrier oscillation with a frequency <B> f ", </B> which is set at a point on the sloping edge of curve 1 at which the degree of transmission is 50% o of the maximum value is a complete sideband (in the illustrated case the upper sideband) and part of the other sideband.
The carrier frequency f S, on which the accompanying sound is modulated, is just above the upper limit of the pass band for the television signals.
It is assumed that the channel available for the television signals comprises the frequency range from A to f: as shown in FIG. 1. It is evident that the highest image stream frequency still transmitted is equal to <B> f., </B> reduced by the carrier frequency and, with a transmission characteristic according to curve 1, is therefore equal to f; -f ".
If the steepness of the inclined flank of curve 1 is made smaller, as shown by the dashed line la, then, as can be seen from the figure, the highest still transmitted image stream frequency becomes smaller, namely the same If the steepness of the flank is chosen to be greater, As indicated by the dashed line 1b, the highest image stream frequency still transmitted increases up to f2-f, r.
By increasing the steepness of the flank, the highest transmitted image stream frequency can be made larger so that the available frequency band f 1-f2 is better utilized. As will be explained with reference to FIG. 5, however, a limit is set for the increase in the steepness of the inclined flank.
In FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 the transmission characteristics which can be set with three different television receivers are shown, in which the curve according to FIG. 2 relates to a receiver with a wide pass band, with the aid of which a television picture of good quality is obtained while 3 and 4 relate to cheaper receivers with a relatively small pass band.
It is clear that these curves can also represent the transmission characteristics of complete devices consisting of a receiver and a transmitter. A receiver with a transmission characteristic according to one of FIGS. 2 to 4 will be discussed with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7. FIG.
In Fig. 5, which shows the upper half of the envelope curve of the carrier wave, i.e. the amplitude of the carrier wave (ordinate) as a function of time (abscissa), the signal is shown which is obtained,
when an image current signal of rectangular waveform is modulated onto a carrier wave and is transmitted by means of a device with a transmission characteristic of the form indicated by curve 1 in FIG. If the steepness of the inclined edge of the transmission characteristic is too great, the image current signal shown in FIG. 5 by a solid line is obtained after the rectification, which, as shown in the figure, is obtained.
It is evident that in the event of a sudden transition from black to white or from white to black, a disturbance oscillation Ar respectively preceding this transition. A2. The effect of this interfering oscillation in the transmitted image is usually that a sudden increase in brightness is preceded by a dark edge and a sudden decrease in brightness is preceded by a light edge.
In order to utilize the available frequency range as much as possible, the steepness of the flank of the transmission characteristic is now selected as large as possible, but in such a way that the interfering vibrations shown in FIG. 5 just do not occur.
If the transmission characteristic has a shape as shown in FIG. 2, 3 or 4, the image current signal, which is obtained after transmission of a current pulse of a rectangular wave form, has the wave form indicated by dashed lines in FIG. As can be seen from this figure, the parasitic oscillations A and A practically do not occur.
A further reduction in the steepness of the inclined edge would only reduce the highest image current frequency still transmitted and practically no longer reduce the interfering oscillations.
The width of the partially suppressed sideband for curved curve shapes is defined as the frequency range between the carrier frequency and the frequency at which the gain is only 5% of the maximum gain. This latter frequency is indicated in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 by the vertical dashed line on the right-hand side.
The width of the full sideband is calculated from the carrier frequency up to the frequency at which a sudden reduction in gain takes place, which frequencies are marked in the figures by the vertical dashed line on the left.
The ratio of the width of the partially suppressed sideband to the width of the complete sideband is found in the case shown in FIG. 2 1: 4 or 0.25, in the case of FIG. 3 0.75: 1.86 or 0.4 and in the case of FIG. 4 0.69: 2.3 or 0.3.
It can be shown that if the carrier frequency is set at a point on the inclined edge of the transmission characteristic at which the degree of transmission is <B> 50% </B> of the maximum value, the ratio of the width of the partially suppressed sideband the width of the full sideband must preferably be not less than 0.2 and not more than about 0.35, which is true when assuming that the phase shift that the transmitted oscillations experience during transmission,
is proportional to the Y sequence in the pass band, and that: the sloping edge is p # de.
In reality the phase ni! 4t is exactly a linear function of the frequency, and it has been found that in some receivers the said ratio must be greater than 0.35, but at most 0.45); Fig. 3 shows an example thereof.
FIG. 6 shows an embodiment of a television receiver which has the transmission characteristics shown in FIG. Some parts of the device shown in FIG. 6 can be of the known type and are therefore only indicated in block form.
The television receiver shown in FIG. 6 is of the superposition type and has a mixer 10 consisting of a first detector and a tunable local oscillator, several intermediate frequency amplifiers 11, 12, 13 and 14 and a second Detector 16 on.
The coupling circuit between the mixer stage 10 and the first intermediate frequency stage 11 has a filter circuit (not shown) for screening the carrier wave onto which the moving sound is modulated. This sieve circle basically corresponds to a sieve circle, which is provided for the same purpose in the reinforcement stage 11 and will be discussed in more detail.
The reinforcement stage 11 has one. Amplifier tube 17 and a coupling circuit, which has a variable primary coil 18, a variable secondary coil 19 and a coupling coil 21; the coils 18 and 19 form together with the anode-cathode capacitance of the tube 17 respectively. the input capacitance of a second amplifier tube 22 two tuned oscillation circuits.
The first old is located at the exit of the tube 17 and consists of the anode-cathode capacitance of the tube 17, the primary coil 18, the capacitance formed by the parallel resonance circuit 23, -24 and 26, the coupling coil 21 and the block condenser Sator 28, and the second circuit in the input of the tube 22 consists of the input capacitance of this tube, the secondary coil 19, the capacitor 33, the coupling coil 21 and the capacitance 28.
The coupling coil 21, which forms part of the two tuned circles, causes such coupling between the circles that a frequency band of the desired width is allowed through. As has already been noted, the coupling circuit of the amplification stage 11 contains a filter circuit for sieving out the sound carrier wave. This sieve circuit consists of a coil 23 connected between coils 18 and 19,
which is bridged by the series connection of a controllable self-induction 24 and a capacitor 26, whereby the filter circuit can be tuned to parallel resonance at the audio frequency to be screened out. and because this frequency is lower than the image frequencies to be transmitted, the filter circuit has a capacitive character for these image frequencies. The coils 18 and 23 are magnetic. coupled to each other, while the connec tion point of the coils 18 and 23 via a variable resistor 27 and a block capacitor 28 is connected to ground.
The magnetic coupling is indicated in Fig. 6 by a curved arrow. If the resistor 27 is set to the exact value, the influence of the resistance present in the tuned circuit 23, 24 and 26 can be compensated, whereby a very sharp screening of the undesired frequency is obtained. The anode of the tube 17 is supplied with a suitable anode voltage from a voltage source (not shown) via a resistor 31, the coil 21 and the coils 23 and 18. Of the.
Lattice circle of the tube 22 contains a line resistor 32 and a capacitor 33 which forms a separation for the anode voltage of the tube 17. The coupling is set correctly by first tuning the filter circuit 23, 24 and 26 to the audio frequency by means of the coil 24.
Then the two mentioned coupled circles are set by means of the coils 18 and 19 approximately to the middle frequency of the band. Finally the resistance 27 seeing is set,
that between the point of connection of the coil 23 and the capacitor 33 and earth no more sound signal occurs. Finally, it should also be mentioned that the resistor 27 'connected in parallel to the coil 18 provides the attenuation necessary for a wider tuning of the first circuit.
The already mentioned amplifier tube 22 forms part of the following intermediate frequency amplification stage 12, which also has a coupling circuit for coupling the anode circuit of the tube 22 to the input circuit of the following amplifier tube 34. This coupling circuit does not contain a sieve circuit and consists of a primary oscillation circuit with a primary coil 36 and a secondary oscillation circuit with a secondary coil 37.
These circles are coupled to one another by means of a coil 38 common to the two circles. The coupling is such that the desired pass band is obtained. The anode of the tube 22 is supplied with a suitable anode voltage via a resistor 39 and the coils 38 and 36 from a voltage source not provided.
The ends of the resistors 31 and 39, which are not connected to a voltage source, and other similar resistors in the circuit are grounded via suitable capacitors for high-frequency voltages. A capacitor 41 forms a separation between the anode circuit of the tube 32 and the grid circle of the tube 34 for the anode voltage.
About the primary oscillation circuit, which contains the coils 36 and 38, a damping resistor 42 is preferably switched switched. The coupling circuit is set in such a way that the gain over the larger part of the passband is relatively large and the gain on the side mixes lower high frequencies (the other side than the one on which the carrier frequency is located) begins to decrease relatively soon.
This unfavorable drop in the gain is preferably compensated for in the preceding stages 10 and 11, which contain a sieve circle, in such a way that the sieve circles are set in such a way that the gain on the side with lower high frequencies is improved again.
For this purpose, the coupling circuit of amplification stage 11 and possibly that of stage 10 is dimensioned in such a way that the transmission characteristic is close to the other end of the desired intermediate frequency passband than that where the carrier frequency is (in the case shown on the side of the lowest frequency ), has a tip.
The sieve circle serves to filter out the sound carrier waves and is matched to the sound carrier frequency, which is on the side with lower high frequencies next to the pass band. In this way, the desired tip is obtained without any special means.
The following intermediate frequency amplification stage 13 corresponds to stage 12 and, like the last amplification stage 14, is not shown in detail. From the output circuit of the stage 14 is connected to a two th detector 16, the output circuit is verbun in üblicbe manner with a video frequency amplifier not provided is the. The output voltage of the Detek sector 16 can also be taken from a control voltage that can be used after amplification in an amplifier 43 for automatic amplification control and in the illustrated case, the control grids of the amplifier tubes 17 and 37 is fed.
From Figs. 7 to 11 it can be seen that. When a coupling circuit containing a sieve circuit, such as. B. the coupling circuit of the amplification stage 11 is set in the correct way, the bandwidth of the amplifier, over which the gain is constant, can be increased. Fig. 7 shows the transmission characteristics of the entire intermediate frequency amplifier including the mixer 10, i.e. H.
the ratio between the input voltage of the detector 16 to the input voltage of the mixer 10 as a function of the intermediate frequency obtained after mixing.
FIG. 8 shows the entire transmission characteristic of the four intermediate frequency stages 11, 12, 13 and 14; H. from the grid of the tube 22 to the input circuit of the detector 16.
9 shows the transmission characteristics for stages 12, 13 and 14 as a whole. From this figure it can be seen that the gain is between 8.5 and 10 MHz below the desired magimum level.
It should also be noted that the picture carrier frequency of 13 MHz lies at a point on the right-hand flank of the curve where the gain (the overdrive degree) is almost 100%, namely about 90% .
Fig. 10 shows the transfer characteristics for. The intermediate frequency stages 12 and 13 as a whole, while Pig. 11 shows the transmission characteristic for the amplification stage 14 alone. It is to be noted
that in FIG. 10 as well as in FIG. 11 the carrier frequency is almost at the same point of the characteristic, namely at a point where the gain is <B> 90% </B> of the maximum value, since this is the transmission characteristics of some stages and not the overall characteristics of the reception.
As has already been noted, the video carrier frequency lies at a point on the oblique edge of the transmission characteristic where the gain (the degree of transmission) is 50% of the maximum value. This is indicated in FIG. 7 by the dashed line 44.
A comparison of the curves shown in FIGS. 7 to 11 shows that the flank of the transmission characteristics on the video carrier frequency side is achieved by a suitable setting of the two gain stages 10 and 11 containing filter circles, the desired position in relation to the carrier frequency receives, whereby its steepness is also changed somewhat. It should be noted in particular that in the curves according to FIGS.
10 and 11 the picture carrier frequency at the same point, i.e. H. the point at which the gain is 90%, in the curve according to FIG. 8 at the point at which the gain is <B> 75% </B>, and in the curve according to FIG. 7 at the desired point Point of the inclined flank where the gain is 50 lies.
The desired steepness of the inclined flank of the transmission characteristic on the carrier wave side is thus essentially obtained in the intermediate frequency stage 11 and the stage preceding it, both of which contain a filter circuit.
By changing the resistor 27 ', the receiver according to FIG. 6 could also be set in such a way that, instead of the transmission characteristic according to FIG. 7, a transmission characteristic according to one of FIGS. 2 to 4 would be obtained. The slope of the carrier frequency-side edge of the transmission characteristic would be changed more strongly.
The curve according to FIG. 7 also shows that the ratio of the width of the partially suppressed side structure to the width of the complete side band is 1.25: 5.65 or approximately 0.22.
