La teneur en V206, P206, As205 des sels vanadifères extraits et- la proportion relative de ces trois péntoxydes dans lesdits sels peu vent varier très fortement;
Process for obtaining solutions containing sodium vanadate from alkaline liquors for treating bauxites by the Bayer process. It is known that bauxites contain small amounts of vanadium. For French bauxites, this quantity is of the order of 0.05% expressed in V206.
According to the Bayer process, the bauxites are treated with caustic soda or with the solution obtained from a previous operation after having decomposed the sodium aluminate contained in this solution, to obtain alumina.
One thus dissolves, at the same time as the aluminum mine, a part of the vanadium contained in the bauxite, part which varies between 30 and 70 of the vanadium contained in the bauxite, according to the origin of the latter. At the same time as vanadium, phosphorus, in the state of P206 and arsenic in the state of As206, as well as fluorine are also dissolved.
These elements accumulate in the process liquors circulating in the installation (decomposed aluminate solutions from the Bayer bearing). They eventually crystallize out as a mixture of the following three isomorphic salts 2 NasV04. NaF. 19 H2O 2 Na3PO4. NaF. 19 H2O 2. Na3AsO4. NaF.19 H20 According to.
According to the present invention, we start with alkaline treatment liquors, rolling in an installation treating bauxites according to the Bayer process, these liquors are cooled to cause them to crystallize a mixture of isomorphic fluovanadate, fluophosphate and sodium fluo-arsenate (mixture hereinafter referred to as "vanadiferous salts), this mixture is redissolved in hot water, this solution is at least partially neutralized, the cold-insoluble compounds are removed by crystallization,
thus obtaining a solution which contains the vanadium in the form of sodium vanadate and freed from some of the impurities contained in the vanadiferous salt used.
The best conditions to achieve to recover this mixture of salts consist in cooling to 20-25 C, in an iron tank, the decomposed aluminate liquors from the Bayer bearing, the sodium hydroxide content of which is preferably between 190 and 230 g of Na2O per liter. Under these conditions, the vanadiferous salts crystallize in the form of beautiful octahedral crystals which are removed and washed in order to eliminate as much as possible the sodium aluminate solution which imbues them.
This solution contains, after crystallization and elimination of salts, less than 0.2 g per liter of V = 05.
The adoption of the systematic extraction of vanadiferous salts from rolling aluminate solutions in a Bayer alumina plant processing French bauxites, allows easy recovery in the form of vanadiferous salts of approximately 0.500 kg of V ' 06 per tonne of alumina (A1203) produced.
The content of V206, P206, As205 of the vanadiferous salts extracted and the relative proportion of these three pentoxides in said salts can vary very strongly;
generally, P206 predominates; then comes V206 and, finally, As206, but - it happens that certain factories, supplied by bauxite deposits rich in soluble V206, extract salts in which it is the trisodium fluo-vanadate which is found in greater quantity .
For the composition of the vanadiferous salts extracted in alumina factories in the south of France, the following limit values may be accepted: V206 3-10% P205 6-14 As205 1.5 -3 Fluoride 2-3 Na2O 26-30 (the rest being water of constitution). But in some salts, V206 contents of up to 12% have been found.
On average, we can count on a content of 5% in v205. Of the 26-30% of total Na2O contained in the vanadiferous salts, there are about 10% which titrate to phenol-phthalein.
The only impurities of the vanadiferous salts are Bayer alumina which could be in suspension in the alumina liquors before the crystallization of the salt, of the impregnating soda ash and of the soda ash. If the vanadiferous salt is crystallized under the concentration conditions indicated above, in most cases there is hardly any sodium carbonate in the salt.
The method according to the invention can be carried out in different ways.
The alkalinity of the vanadiferous salts can be completely saturated, after having redissolved them in hot water, and then eliminated by crystallization of the sodium salts resulting from the neutralization. The solution thus obtained can be used to obtain ammonium metavana- date by treating it with an ammoniacal salt.
If NH3 and HCl or NH3 and SO'H2 are available separately, it can also be treated with ammonia gas, the excess of which is removed, and the solution neutralized to precipitate ammonium vanadate.
The process can also be made poor by partially neutralizing the alkalinity of the vanadiferous salts, to obtain: on the one hand, low-vanadiferous fluosalts, containing arse nic and most of the phosphorus and fluorine, on the other hand starts with a solution containing sodium vanadate, from which the small remainder of phosphorus and fluorine it contains is precipitated.
The following examples indicate the conditions in which the invention can be carried out, respectively according to each of the modes which have just been defined.
Example T The vanadiferous salts are suspended in an amount of water equal to their weight. The mixture is heated to 70-80 ° C. until dissolved, then sulfuric acid is added until the alkalinity of the phenolphthalein has disappeared. The solution is cooled and left at 20-25 C for 24 hours,
to allow crystallization of sodium sulfate and disodium phosphate resulting from the neutralization. The crystals are filtered and filtered off, which retain 0.5 to 1% V20 ". A solution of approximately 40 g of V205 per liter is collected.
The separation of the vanadate from this solution in the ammonium salt state can be carried out as follows: After separation of the crystals of sodium sulphate and disodium phosphate, gaseous ammonia is introduced into the solution at about 40 g per liter of V205 (still containing phosphate, arsenate, sulphate and sodium fluoride). All the sodium hydroxide salts other than the vanadate precipitate almost completely, and they are removed. The solution is partially degassed by heating, and the ammonia is recovered.
Sulfuric or hydrochloric acid is then added until the solution is neutralized. The meta-vanadate precipitates almost pure. Example 2: 1000 kg of vanadiferous salts are introduced into 1300 to 100 liters of water. 50 kg of sulfuric acid (in H2SO4) are added, which corresponds to the neutralization of only about 30% of the alkalinity of the salts, to the. phenolphthalein. Heat at 90 for 2 hours to redissolve the salts and then cool to about 25 ° C.
The recrystallized salts thus obtained are trisodium defluosalts. They do not contain sodium sulfate, but all the arsenic and most of the phosphorus and fluorine of the initial vanadiferous salts.
These recrystallized salts still contain 0.7% V205. 600 to 750 kg of recrystallized salts are collected per tonne of initial vanadiferous salts depending on whether these salts contain more or less V205 at the start.
The solution separated from the recrystallized salts contains 30 to 40 g per liter of V205, with about 20 g per liter of P205 and 10 g per liter of NaF. The As205 content is tiny. The alkalinity of the phenolphthalein solution is about 10 to 15 g per liter of Na2O.
From this solution, both phosphorus and fluorine can be precipitated with alumina salts or with lime salts. However, it is advantageous to precipitate fluorine and phosphorus separately. To remove fluoride; an alumina salt is added to the solution, in an amount such that there is one molecule of A1203 for 12 molecules of NaF. If the solution already contained alumina in the form of aluminate, this is taken into account in the calculation.
The phenolphthalein solution is then neutralized with sulfuric acid. It precipitates cryolite, according to the reaction: Ale (S04) 3 -i- 12 NaF = Al2Fe 6 NaF + 3 Na2504. The cryolite is then filtered and washed. Excess lime sulfate is then added to the solution, and the mixture is heated to around 80 ° C. The phosphorus is insolubilized in the form of lime phosphate.
Lime sulphate was chosen for the dephosphorization of solutions because it is not very soluble and, therefore, it can be used in excess, without running the risk of finding calcium in the purified vanadiferous solution. This purified solution now contains only sodium vanadate.
In the preceding examples, the sulfuric acid employed for the neutralization of the redissolved vanadiferous salts can be replaced by phosphoric acid. This gives the advantage of obtaining recrystallized salts consisting of sodium phosphate.
The necessary phosphoric acid solution can be prepared by the action of sulfuric acid on natural lime phosphate, but the precipitated lime phosphate obtained can also be used with advantage during the sulphate scrubbing. of lime, impure solutions of sodium vanadate, according to Example 2.
The recrystallized vanadiferous sels are redissolved in hot water. The alkalinity of the solution is completely neutralized with phenolphthalein, with sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid and, after possible filtration of the insoluble material, it is allowed to cool to around 20 C. Most of the phos disodium phate crystallizes, with a V205 content of less than M% 1 and this content can be reduced to practically 0 by a further crystallization.
In this way, merchantable disodium phosphate is obtained, which can optionally be converted into tri-sodium phosphate. inar & and by adding the desired amount of caustic soda before the last crystallization. The mother liquors are effectively reused to dissolve the recrystallized salts, which give up their vana dium and their arsenic to the mother liquor, while purified disodium phosphate crystallizes. However,
mother liquor cannot be reused indefinitely. When the As'O 'key mother liquor content reaches about 20 g per liter, caustic soda or vanadiferous salts rich in V205 and poor in P'O5 are added to the mother liquors until the solution has an alkalinity to phenolphthalein of the order of 10 to 15 g per liter of Na2O. All of the arsenic is thus crystallized in the form of
trisodium flüoarsenate containing little vanadium. Fluoarsenate can be used in the manufacture of agricultural insecticides. The solutions thus purified of arsenic and which contain almost all the vanadium and phosphate are then treated as indicated above for. precipitation of phosphate and fluorine.
Thus, all of the valuable elements contained in the vanadiferous salts are recovered in a market form. Vana dium in the form of sodium vanadate solution, phosphorus in the form of di- or trisodium phosphate free from vanadium oxides, arsenic and part of the fluorine in the form of trisodium fluoarsenate which can be used in the manufacture of agricultural insecticides, and the other part of fluorine in the state of cryolite.
