Process for improving the properties of bitumina. The invention relates to a process for improving the properties of bitumens, such as asphalt bitumen, paraffin, tar, pitch and the like.
It has been found that mixed polymers of vinylidene compounds such as vinylidene chloride, allylidene chloride, alpha = chloroacrylonitrile and the like with other polymerizable compounds (e.
B. vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, styrene), divinyl compounds (such as butadiene and chloroprene) and olefins (e.g. isobutene), when mixed with the bitumens, give the latter improved properties.
In particular, the addition of copolymers of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride to asphalt bitumens improves the temperature range within which the asphalt bitumens can be used. In particular, the area of use becomes too extended after the higher temperatures.
Furthermore, the addition of the copolymers mentioned is also associated with other advantages. This increases the corrosion resistance, which is perhaps also due to the fact that the water permeability of the copolymers is extremely low.
Furthermore, the flammability is reduced by the additives mentioned.
These, similar and / or other special properties are also given to the bitumens by other mixed polymers than those of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride.
It is also possible to incorporate larger amounts of the copolymers into the bitumens than is the case with the known additives to bitumens, such as with polymers of isobutene and polymerization products of vinyl chloride. Namely, these are difficult to mix with bitumens such as asphalt bitumens. The fact that the mixed polymers according to the invention can be incorporated in larger amounts of bitumens also creates the possibility of a greater variation in the properties of the bitumens than was the case with the previously proposed additives.
Another possibility for variation is the fact that the mixing ratio of the components of the mixed polymer can also be changed, which also makes it possible to influence the properties of the product to a large extent.
The copolymers can be prepared by various methods customary for the polymerization of unsaturated substances. In particular, however, the method according to which the polymerization takes place in emulsion form comes into consideration.
Of course, the use of the copolymers according to the invention is not limited to copolymers of vinylidene compounds with only one other polymerizable compound, but also includes the use of copolymers with two or more other polymerizable compounds.
It is also possible to use mixed polymers which have undergone some kind of pretreatment, whereby, for example, the miscibility with the bitumens is even further improved. The miscibility of copolymers of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride with bitumina can be increased by subjecting them to a chlorination treatment.
The mixed polymers can be incorporated in various ways. If appropriate, solvents can be used. If solvents are used, those are preferably used in which both the bitumen and the copolymer are soluble. If no solvents are used, the bitumen must first be made liquid, preferably thin, in order to achieve good mixing.
In addition to the copolymers, other substances can also be added to the bitumens, such as fillers, dyes, softeners and substances that have a stabilizing effect on the copolymers, for example prevent their decomposition at higher temperatures.
The possible uses of the bitumens produced according to the invention are numerous. The most important are those, where the bitumens are used as protective layers on Ma materials of various kinds, where they can be used as such, in the form of a spreadable mass, as a paint or sprayable product. They are also excellently suited for impregnation purposes (e.g. for impregnating paper and textiles) and for producing molded pieces.
Example I: A mixed polymer with a chlorine content of 57.4% was prepared by emulsion polymerization of a mixture of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride. The viscosity of a 5% ixen solution of this polymer in a mixture of equal amounts by weight of butyl acetate and xylene at 25 ° C. was 3 ° C. p.
100 g of this polymer were dissolved with mechanical stirring at 40 ° C. in a mixture of 500 g of solvent naphtha (boiling point 130 to 160 ° C.) and 500 cm 'of methylcyclohexanone.
After the polymer had completely dissolved, the solution was heated to about 140 ° C. and, with thorough stirring, 500 g of asphalt bitumen, liquefied by heating, with a penetration at 25 ° C. of about 15 ° C. and a melting point (ring and ball) of about 115 ° C. were added. The result was a homogeneous solution that did not segregate or gelatinize on cooling, was easy to spread and the film of which remained on the evaporation of the solvent adhered very well to an iron substrate.
In contrast to the asphalt bitumen to which no mixed polymer was added, the film did not run off in the vertical position at temperatures above 120 ° C. up to the temperature at which the mixed polymer begins to noticeably decompose, while the brittleness undergoes almost no change at low temperature would have.
Example II: A copolymer with a chlorine content of 45% was prepared by emulsion polymerization of a mixture of vinylidene chloride and isobutene.
50 g of this polymer were dissolved in 500 cm 'of methylcyclohexanone with mechanical stirring at about 150 ° C.
After the polymer had completely dissolved, 250 g of asphalt bitumen, liquefied by heating, with a penetration at 25 C of about 15 and a melting point (ring and ball) of about 115 C, were added with thorough stirring. The result was a homogeneous solution which did not gelatinize even when cooled.
The solution was applied by brushing onto a metal substrate, and after complete drying, the flow of the film obtained (layer thickness 0.5 mm) at higher temperatures. doors checked. It was found that at temperatures at which the unmixed asphalt shows very clear flow phenomena (at 125 C), the asphalt mixed with the copolymer has not yet flowed.
Example III: A copolymer was produced by emulsion polymerization of a mixture of 80 parts by weight of vinylidene chloride and 20 parts by weight of butadiene. - 15 parts by weight of this polymer were intimately mixed with 85 parts by weight of asphalt bitumen, softening point (ring and ball) 48 C, penetration at 25 C = 87 and penetration index = -0.3, the temperature finally being 100 C.
After mixing, the bitumen showed the following properties: softening point (ring and ball) 93 C, penetration at 25 C 53, penetration index = -f-4.7.
The product obtained is suitable for applying protective layers, for example on a metal substrate, where the layer is characterized by high resistance to runoff at high temperature.
