Discharge tube with mercury cathode. The invention relates to a discharge tube with a mercury cathode and an ignition device which is capable of igniting the tube at rapidly successive points in time and which has at least one body floating on the mercury cathode which carries a plurality of ignition electrodes insulated from the mercury.
There are already floating Zündvorrich lines known in which a high resistance ignition electrode is partially immersed in the Ka method mercury. It is important to ensure that the ignition electrode is always immersed in the mercury to the same depth.
However, this ignition device has the disadvantage that the high resistance ignition electrode has a limited service life as a result of the fact that the cathode patch can easily attack the ignition electrode. As a result of the attack, the resistance of the ignition electrode can also change, which, in a similar way to impurities that may arise during operation, can adversely affect the reliability of the ignition device.
In the discharge tube according to the invention, the ignition electrodes consist of pins, the tips of which are just above the mercury; silver surface. The pins can all be connected to a single voltage source or in different groups to different voltage sources.
When high voltages are applied to the pins at the desired moment of ignition, the latter is initiated in that an arc is formed as a result of the electrostatic attraction of the mercury after the pins, at a sufficiently short distance, perhaps as a result of cold emission of the mercury.
If the pins are made of metal or carbon, they can be provided with suitable switching resistors or upstream capacitors.
The pins can also be made entirely or partially of high resistance material, whereby the use of ballast resistors is unnecessary. If each pin has its own voltage source, the series resistors can be omitted even if the pins are made of metal or carbon.
It is of great interest not to keep the number of pens too small, since with a small number of pens it can easily happen that, due to the corrugation of the mercury surface caused by the presence of the cathode spot, all the pens at the same time and for a long time are in contact with the mercury. In this case the tube cannot be ignited during this time, because an arc cannot be formed between any of the pins and the mercury. This is a disadvantage, especially with rectifiers and other tubes, which have to be ignited in quick succession.
If the number of pens is now large enough, there will always be several pens which have no contact with the mercury and consequently can initiate ignition when the voltage is applied to the pens. The currents drawn from the voltage sources are limited by the initial resistances of the pins in contact with the mercury, so that the voltage on the pins not in contact with the mercury is still sufficient to initiate ignition.
A particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention is that the pen tip consists of a material with a higher resistance than the rest of the pen part, which has spikes curved towards the mercury cathode, the tips of which are practically twice as far from the mercury surface is like that of the pen tip.
As with any high-voltage ignition device, care should be taken to ensure that the voltage applied has a steep wave front so that the time of ignition is precisely defined. The subject of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in some exemplary quiet embodiments, namely shows:
Fig. La and 1u a vertical section through respectively. a plan view of an ignition device, Fig. 2 shows an embodiment in which the pins are partially made of high resistance material Wi, Fig. 3 shows an embodiment in which the floating body is effective as a cathode spot anchor and Fig. 4 shows a circuit showing a Ent Includes charge tube with igniter.
In Fig. La and 1b, 1 denotes the wall of the discharge vessel, which in this case consists of an insulating material, for example glass: 2 denotes the cathode mercury. on which a float 3 is located. In this float made of metal, for example, a small disk made of insulating material 4 is attached, in which the ignition pins 5 are mounted. These ignition pins, in the present case nine pieces, are each provided with an upstream resistor 7 and are connected in three groups of three by the flexible lead wires 6 to the voltage sources 8.
On the float 3, a ringlet 9 is attached, which can glide along a pin 10 attached to the wall of the vessel, so that practically only vertical movements of the swimmer are possible. If the wires 6 are sufficiently rigid, the parts 9 and 10 can also be omitted.
At the desired moment of ignition, high voltages are applied to the ignition pins 5 by means of the voltage sources 8. The mercury is lifted by electrostatic attraction, with arcs being formed between the pins and the mercury, which initiate the ignition of the tube.
If the pins 5 are not made entirely of metal, the resistors 7 can also be omitted. If strong wave movements of the mercury are to be expected, it can be useful to attach the pins that are connected to the same voltage source at different distances from the mercury surface and only the pins that are closest to the mercury are entirely or partially made of material with high resistance to be manufactured or provided with a series resistor.
In Fig. 2, the parts corresponding to Figs. 1a and 1b are the same. Provide reference signs. The pins 5, of which only one is shown for the sake of simplicity, here have a tip 11 made of material of high resistance. The pin is now connected to the voltage source 8 without a switching resistor. The rest of the pin part, which is made of metal, is provided with spikes 13 which are curved towards the mercury cathode. The distance between the mandrel tips and the mercury surface is practically twice as great as the distance between the tip 11 and the mercury surface.
If the tip 11 comes into contact with the latter due to the corrugation of the mercury, if the voltage supplied by the voltage source 8 is sufficiently high and its internal resistance is sufficiently small in relation to the resistance of the tip 11, an arc between the metal Thorns of the pin 5 and the mercury are formed. The vertical movements of the swimmer are possible in this case because the rigid feed wire 6 has two articulation points 12. This type of attachment is FITS advantageous for tubes in portable systems that are not always used exactly in the vertical ter position.
In Fig. 3a and 3b a floating body is shown, the edge 14 of which is wetted by the mercury so that the cathode spot can easily attach to it. The arms 15 are attached to a ring 16 which can slide over a shoulder 17 of the bottom of the discharge vessel, so that here too the swimmer can only perform vertical movements.
In the three embodiments described above, only one float is shown with a relatively low number of pins. It can be seen that multiple floats with any number of pins can be used. Appropriately, no less than 20 pens are used.
In FIG. 4, the ignition device 4 of the discharge tube 1 is connected to the secondary winding 14 of the transformer 12. A current that is supplied by the battery 20 flows through the primary winding 13.
By interrupting this current by means of the contact 21 bridged by the capacitor 23, a high voltage is generated in the secondary winding which is fed to the ignition device 4. The circuit can of course also be set up in such a way that the desired voltage is obtained by closing the current in the primary winding.
If the tube 1 is used as a rectifier, the interruption of the contact 21 can take place, for example, by means of the cam 22 driven by a shaft at a suitable speed.
