les organes rotatifs entre lesquels est intercalé le dispositif élastique se trouvant dans la partie du mécanisme démultiplicateur de ces démar reurs voisine du volant et tournant par suite à vitesse élevée;
La fig. 1 est une coupe îlangitudin.ule de cette forme d'exécution; la fig. 2 montre un détail en -coupe par tielle; la fig. 3 représente une variante d'un détail de cette forme d'exécution, la fig. 4 une variante d'un autre détail; la. fi-. 5 représente, en perspective et par- ticllement en coupe, une troisième variante de détail;
de l'or gane 50 pour une course axiale .donnée de l'organe 47. On est toutefoislimité dans cette voie par le souci d'éviter que les ressorts 53 se mettent trop -de travers. Aussitôt que le moteur à lancer tourne par ses propres moyens., la ;
Inertia starter for combustion engines. The present invention relates to an inertia starter for combustion engines, in particular for combustion engines of aircraft.
It is known that starters of this type include a flywheel to which a high speed is imparted, for example by means of an electric motor, and which drives, by means of a reduction mechanism, a disengageable claw. coupling with the starter motor.
These starters usually include a torque limiter whose function is twofold: it must, on the one hand, serve to dampen the shock when the starter is coupled with the motor to be started and, on the other hand, , slip in case of abnormally high resistance torque.
These two functions require contradictory qualities - and a torque limiter cannot be established which fulfills these two functions equally satisfactorily. Indeed, if the limiter is set to damp:
the shock at coupling, it can only transmit a relatively reduced maximum torque, and if the resistive torque of the motor is high enough, the limiter slips and heats up, resulting in a constant loss. considerable energy stored in the starter, on the one hand, and rapid wear of the limiter,: on the other hand.
Such a starter can therefore not be used to start motors with very different resistive torque and does not even give satisfaction in the case of a determined motor, since the resistive torque at starting of an engine varies enormously. with temperature. On the other hand, if the limiter was established to be able to transmit a high torque,
the shock at the coupling would become dangerous for the toothings enb enages. du mechanism de-multiplica, taur.
Also known d.es inertia starters comprising, in addition to this .couple limiter. an elastic transmission device wedged between two rotating members of the mechanism: reduction gear.
In these starters, however, the action of the elastic transmission device has the effect of varying the setting of the torque limiter as a function of the Ga tension of the elastic elements of this transmission device, which obviously has drawbacks. In addition,
the rotary members between which is interposed the elastic device located in the part of the gear mechanism of these starters close to the flywheel and therefore rotating at high speed;
these starters usually have the drawback that when coupling the torque transmitted to the claw very suddenly takes its maximum value, so that the aforementioned drawbacks are encountered. On the other hand, the elastic elements of the device -de transmission-., Ion thus arranged are despite this too weak to produce, by relaxing,
acceleration of the coupling claw which is sufficient to keep the latter always glued to the engine during periodic acceleration thereof after each compression, and thus to avoid the successive shocks which otherwise occur between these two claws.
The inertia starter according to the present invention is characterized in that the flywheel drives the.
disengageable claw for coupling with the engine to be started by means of a gear reduction mechanism between two rotary members rotating at low speed which is interposed an elastic transmission device,
a torque limiter preventing the torque transmitted to the claw from exceeding a determined limit, the value of which is not influenced by the operation of the starter. This arrangement makes it possible to remedy the drawbacks of the known starters mentioned above.
In fact, the elastic transmission device being interposed between two members rotating at low speed of the reduction mechanism, it is possible without difficulty to choose the elasticity of this device in such a way that, while attenuating the shock of the coupling satisfactorily. - plement, he can,
when relaxing, accelerate the starter coupling claw sufficiently during periods of acceleration (the engine claw so that these two claws always remain stuck to each other.
the elastic transmission device being able to be established in such a way that it is sufficient on its own to attenuate the coupling shock,
it therefore becomes possible to set up the torque limiter in such a way that the value of the maximum transmissible torque is much greater than the ma & imum of the normal resistive torque of a <B> starting </B> engine,
so that Won will be able to establish the starter according to the invention so that it can be used to start motors with very different resistive torques without there ever being any risk of too violent coupling shocks or of losses energy in the limiter.
The fact that in the starter according to the invention it is possible to give the maximum transmissible torque a relatively high value, while eliminating the coupling shock, also makes it possible to provide this starter according to the invention, in a form of special execution,
a limiter adjustment device (the torque which is easily understood by the user,
and that without that. could constitute a danger for the teeth of the gears of the reduction mechanism. Such an arrangement would hardly be possible in the case of known starters of which the e limiter.
torque serves to attenuate the coupling shock. In these starters, in order to prevent any danger for the teeth of the gears, the torque limiter is adjusted once and for all by the manufacturer, and this adjustment cannot be touched without removing the starter.
The attached drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the starter according to the invention as well as some variations of detail of this embodiment.
Fig. 1 is a cross section of this embodiment; fig. 2 shows a detail in sectional view; fig. 3 shows a variant of a detail of this embodiment, FIG. 4 a variant of another detail; the. fi-. 5 shows, in perspective and partly in section, a third variant of detail;
fig. 6 represents a fourth retail variant; fig. 7 shows a fifth variant in detail, and Ra fig. 8 shows a sixth variant in detail.
The starter shown in fig. 1 and 2 comprises, like all inertial starters, a flywheel 1. This wing 1 is bolted to a plate 2 integral with a very elongated and hollow hub 3 mounted in the vicinity of the flywheel in a ball bearing 4 carried by a plate 5 fixed at the end of a cylindrical box 6 carried by an internal partition 7 of the starter housing.
This plate 5 carries, on the side opposite to that where the flywheel 1 is located, several pivots 8 regularly distributed around the hub 3 and on which are respectively mounted pinions 9 meshing, on the one hand, with a common pinion 10 whose teeth are cut -in the hub 3 and, on the other hand, with a ring 11 with internal teeth, carried by a plate provided -a. hub 12 mounted idle on hub 3 of the flywheel.
Beside this hub 12, the hub 3 carries, also idle, the hub 14 of a planet carrier plate 15 on which several pinions 17 are mounted meshing with a planetary pinion 1.8 integral with the hub 12 and with a planetary wheel 19 carried by a sleeve 20 centered in the box 6 and provided with an outer flange 21 fixed to the end of the box 6 opposite to that carrying the plate 5.
This sleeve 20 carries a second planetary wheel 23 with which the planet wheels 24 mounted on a planet gear carrier plate 25 mesh, the hub 26 of which is also mounted idle on the hub 3. The planet wheels 24 engage, on the other hand, with a planetary gear 28 secured to the hub 14.
A pinion 29 is soli da.ire of the hub 26 and meshes with several pinions 30 carried by -pivots 31 carried by the bottom of a rotary barrel 32 mounted by means of ball bearings 33 in a bearing surface 34 of the housing. In the center of the bottom of this barrel 32 is housed a ball bearing 35 which serves as a bearing at the end @du hub 3 opposite to the flywheel 1.
The plate carrying the crown 11 as well as the planet carrier plates 15. And 25 are threaded onto the hub 3, the part of which between the bearings 4 and 33 is used @de support @ for these plates. The pinions 30 mesh with a planar wheel 36 which carries the outer rods on which are threaded rings of a friction torque limiter of the usual type.
Between these rings are interposed rings threaded on grooves formed in the wall of the housing and springs 38 press together, of these rings against an attached plate 39, fixed to the housing and which centers the wheel 36 by means of 'a discreet scope spared on this one. Each of the springs 3,
8 has one @de its nested ends in a cup 40 integral with a finger 41 which passes through the wall of the housing. These fingers 41 protrude outside the housing and are all in contact with a ring 42 having the same axis as the hub 3 and being screwed onto a thread 43 made on the outside of a: cylindrical bearing surface 34 of the housing. This ring 42, by means of which it is possible to adjust the limiter of:
torque from the outside of the starter, is in two parts to enable it to be fitted.
The inner face of the cylindrical part of the barrel 32 presents the helical ramps with reversible pitch 45 in engagement with the corresponding helical ramps 46 m6na- g6essur the cylindrical periphery: of a single bowl-shaped movable member 47 having the same axis that the barrel and drilled in its center with a hole in the wall of which are made:
grooves 48 engaged on corresponding grooves 49. -a sleeve forming part of a member 50 having the same axis as the barrel. This sleeve is centered at one end on a cylindrical bearing surface 51 projecting from the bottom @ of a barrel 32. At its. other end, this sleeve carries a plate 52.
Strong springs <B> 53, </B> arranged inside the barrel 32 between the bowl 47 and this plate 52, are distributed around the common axis of the members 3 ?, 47 and 50. A retaining ring 54, connected by grooves to the barrel 32, axially maintains the member 50 with respect to this ball, which thus contains the springs 53 and the cup 47.
This ring 54 is itself retained longitudinally by a nut 55 screwed onto the end of the barrel 32.
Inside the bore of the sleeve of the member 50 are cut grooves 58 threaded on longitudinal grooves 59 cut on the tail 60 of the claw 61 for coupling to the engine to be started; the latter, which has the same axis as the hub 3, can thus slide longitudinally relative to the sleeve of the member 50. This possible movement is limited by two shoulders 62 and 63 which abut respectively at the end of the grooves 58 and at the end of the sleeve.
This tail 60 has on the side opposite to the claw 61, an axial cavity 64 in which is housed a spring 65 interposed between the bottom (the cavity 64 and a shoulder 66 of a long rod 67 housed in the axis of the hub hollow 3. This rod passes through the hub 3 freely right through and is engaged in the cavity 64 of which it passes through the bottom.
She can. thus slide longitudinally and a nut 68 is screwed onto its end which projects <B> '</B> the outside in the axis of the claw 61, this nut thus forming a stop against the body of this claw to limit the displacement axial of the rod under the thrust of the spring 65.
The opposite end of the central rod 67 is coupled to one of the arms of a balance 70 carried by a fixed axis 71 inside the casing and the other arm of which is attacked by a sliding rod 72 projecting at the outside of the housing.
The end of the hub 3 closest to the flywheel 1 is integral with a pinion 75 which meshes with a toothed wheel 76 of larger diameter mounted idly on the shaft 77 of an electric motor 78 whose speed is order of eight to ten thousand turns. This wheel 76 has, moreover, a rim 79 inside which is disposed a plate 80 whose hub is integral in rotation with the shaft 77.
A pivot 81., fixed on the plate 80, near its periphery, passes through an eye 82 radially oval and located at the end of an elastic circular jaw 83.
This is mounted on the plate so that there is at rest a clearance between this jaw 83 and the rim 79 which surrounds it, but that, under the action of centrifugal force, the jaw opens elastically and come to rub against this rim 79, thus ensuring the training:
of the wheel <B> 76. </B> The clutch is set to be self-tightening but not self-locking when the plate 80 is driving and is driven in the direction of rotation of the electric motor. (Direction of the arrow at the end. 2.) Indeed, the:
plate 80 being a motor and rotating in the direction of this arrow, as soon as the jaw 83, moving apart as a result of the effect of centrifugal force, comes into contact. by a small area with the rim 79, the driving torque will act to increase the deformation of the jaw 83 and bring the latter into contact. with the rim 78 by a larger surface.
This self-tightening effect of the motor torque does not take place if <B> the </B> plate is driven in the opposite direction to that of:
arrow, so that if the clutch rotates at a given speed @ in the direction of rotation of the electric motor,
the maximum torque which it can transmit when the plate 80 is driving is greater than the maximum torque which it can transmit if it is the rim 79 which is the driving force, this latter torque being at its lowest.
Thus the clutch will play the role of freewheel, preventing the flywheel from driving the motor 78 when, this flywheel having reached the desired speed, the current has been cut. The assembly formed by the wheel 76 and by the clutch is established to be able to pass through the hole in the housing:
in which the end of the motor 78 is encased and can thus be removed and put in place as a single unit with this motor, the housing of which carries a flange 85 for fixing to the edges of said orifice.
On the bottom 'of the barrel 32 is further fixed a gear wheel 86 concentric with the barrel and which meshes with a toothed wheel 87 wedged on a shaft 88 mounted in bearings carried by the housing and which protrudes outside through a head 89 intended to receive a crank or other hand drive member.
The operation is as follows: When the electric motor 78 is started up, the centrifugal friction clutch 79-83 is not engaged, so that the motor starts empty.
The shaft 77 of the engine drives <B> the </B> plate 80 at increasing speed, the jaw 83 'then opens progressively under the action of the increasing centrifugal force and rubs against the rim 79 when the engine is running at a predetermined speed, which ensures the drive -de the wheel 76 and, the flywheel 1 via the speed multiplier 76-75.
This rotation of the flywheel 1 is transmitted to the barrel 32 through the intermediary of the reduction gears: 10, 9 and 11 and reduction trains with epieycloidal gears 18, 17, 19, 28, 24, 23, and 29, 30, 36, the planetary wheel 36 being held stationary by the friction torque limiter 38 to 40.
As nothing opposes the rotation of the claw 61 and, of the member 50 which is integral with it, Qa cup 47 integral in rotation with the sleeve of the member 50 -is driven to rotate by the helical ramps 45 .without tending to screw into the barrel 32.
When the flywheel 1 is sufficiently launched, an pulls on the rod 72, which is obtained here by an electromagnet 90 excited at the chosen moment; the rod 66 is then pushed in the direction f and tends to compress the spring 65 which in turn pushes back the claw 61 to bring it into engagement with that of the motor.
As soon as the claw 61 engages, it is immobilized and there is then a relative rotation of the sleeve of the member 50 and of the barrel 32, which results in an axial displacement of the cup 47 which smooth neck on the sleeve against the action of the springs 53 which it gradually compresses until the torque transmitted by this cup to the claw 1, which depends on the tension of these springs,
is sufficient to start turning the crankshaft of the engine to be started. One could, in a variant - of the starter of FIGS. 1 and 2, replace splines 48 and 49 by helical ramps, with rapid pitch so. avoid the danger of jamming and increase the amplitude of the rotation. relative, of barrel 32 and,
or gane 50 for an axial stroke .data of the member 47. However, this route is limited by the concern to prevent the springs 53 from getting too-across. As soon as the engine to be started turns by its own means., The;
claw 61 is pushed back and .elle returns to the position of FIG. 1 against -de the force, the spring 65, while the springs 53 relax and return the bowl 47 to its rest position.
In the event of an abnormally high resistive torque, there is a slip of the torque limiter 38 to 40 and consequently a corresponding rotation of 12, planet wheel 36.
The maximum torque value that this 38-40 limiter can transmit is very easy to adjust, without having to disassemble it. starter, by simply rotating the ring 42.
On the other hand, the friction clutch 79-83 and the electric motor, which is of the "series" type, are set up so that the maximum torque that the clutch can transmit is lower than that of the electric motor. tric. at a speed for which the back-electromotive force of the motor is sufficient to limit the intensity of the motor current to a value which the windings can permanently support.
The maximum torque value allows the motor to continue rotating at a sufficient speed close to normal despite slowing down or stopping the flywheel due to an abnormal resistive torque.
This arrangement would also prevent a slowing down of the speed of the electric motor below the suf cient value mentioned above, if, for one reason or another, the flywheel 1 were driven in the opposite direction when the motor 78 was running. again.
This case will hardly occur, however, since, when the combustion engine returns to ignition during cranking, it will rather be the torque limiter which will intervene. If the electric motor does not work, the flywheel can be started.
1 by hand via the shaft 88 which makes it possible to turn the barrel 32, and therefore the flywheel, by means of the reduction mechanism between the flywheel and the barrel, which then operates as a speed multiplier .
The existence of the speed multiplier <B> 75, </B> 76 makes it possible to increase the speed of the steering wheel, therefore to reduce its weight without giving the engine excessive speed.
Fig. 3 represents a variant of the device for adjusting the torque limiter. In this variant, the springs 38 bear on the bottom of an annular cup 40 applied against a threaded ring 92 screwing into the housing and carrying a toothing 93 with which engages a pinion 94 carried by a pin 95 which projects out of the. crankcase. It is clear that by rotating this axis 95, the threaded ring 92 is screwed more or less into the casing, thus adjusting the. spring tension.
Fig. 4 shows a variant of. transmission between engine 78 and flywheel 1 of the starter described. In this variant, the self-tightening elastic jaw clutch is replaced by the combination with a freewheel 96 of a centrifugal clutch with identical drive capacity in both directions of rotation,
this clutch comprising weights 97 radially movable in a cage 98 in order to rub against the rim 79 under the action of centrifugal force, this cage 98 being carried by the shaft 77 by means of this free wheel 96 .
When the electric motor is started, the clutch 79-97 is not engaged and the shaft 77 only drives the cage 98 through the free wheel 96; it therefore starts practically empty; once it is launched, the weights 97 rub against the rim 79 and ensure the drive of the. wheel 76 and all the mechanism that this activates.
The freewheel 96 allows this wheel 76 to turn faster than the shaft 77, so that if the current is cut off the supply to the electric motor, the latter will not be driven by the flywheel and will not brake it.
Fig. 5 shows in perspective a variant of the elastic transmission device of the starter of FIG. 1. In this variant, the springs 53 are replaced by a single spring 53a having the same axis as the barrel 32 and the driven member 50.
The bowl 47 is provided with helical ramps 48a cooperating with helical ramps 49a of the sleeve of the driven member 50, which makes it possible to give a rapid pitch to the helical ramps 45 and 46 connecting the barrel 32 to this bowl 47. as well as the ramps 46a and 49a and thus reduce the dangers @de jamming and possible inequalities in the transmission.
Fig. 6 shows a variant of the arrangement of the coupling claw .du starter of FIGS. 1 and 2. The purpose of this arrangement is to prevent engine oil or the like from entering the starter housing. In this variant,
the claw 61 has an axial hole in which is engaged the control rod 67 having a stop 68 against which the claw is applied by the spring 64.
This rod passes through a partition of the claw via an axial opening 69, and the sealing is ensured by a device comprising a tubular part 99 of plastic material filling the opening 69 around the rod and having at one end a collar applied against the outer face of the wall is via the stop 68.
A second plastic flange, which could also be in one piece with the tubular part 99, is applied against the internal face of @la partition by a washer 100 on which rests the spring 64 which thus compresses these two flanges, and applies the tubular part 99 against the rod and against the wall of the opening 69.
Fig. 7 shows another variant of the arrangement of the starter claw of FIGS. 1 and 2. In this variant, the control rod 67, provided with a stop against which a spring applies this claw, is engaged in an axial hole of the claw and passes through a partition, thereof by an opening 69.
The oil is prevented from entering the starter by a threaded plug 102 closing the outer end of the axial hole, the sealing being achieved by two rings 143 and 104.
This plug 102, in the form of a bowl, has a recess 105 of sufficient depth to allow the rod 67 to perform its stroke.
Finally, fig. 8 shows a variant of the hand-operated starter device of FIGS. 1 and 2 according to which the shaft 88 is enclosed in the housing and is connected by bevel gears 106-107 to a <B> 108 </B> shaft arranged perpendicular to the axis of the claw and pre- being the head 89 very accessible intended to receive a removable crank or other.
Hand-launching can thus be carried out under the best conditions.
