Mushroom valve. This invention relates to a mushroom valve and aims at an easier construction and a greater seal than that of the valves used heretofore.
The mushroom valve according to the present invention has a synthetic rubber part provided with a seat, this part being secured between metal retainers which form a block with the valve stem.
The invention makes it possible in particular to avoid the working difficulties and the loss of time which one suffers during the machining of metal surfaces of carefully fitted valves and makes possible the execution of the valve body. , which includes a head and a non-ferrous metal shank, relatively inexpensive, and easily workable, like bronze. On the other hand, thanks to the flexibility of the synthetic rubber part, the contact surface forms a fluid-tight seal on the seat and risks freezing there at low temperatures.
The drawing, which gives, by way of examples, two embodiments of the invention, shows: FIG. 1, a view of a cam pinion valve; fig. 2, a partial sectional view of FIG. 1, and fig. 3 a partial sectional view of a different model.
In the type seen in fig. 1 and 2, the valve comprises a metal rod a which forms a collar b and a bead c of smaller diameter than the collar, the bead and the collar being distant from each other by the thickness of the part in rubber. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the bead c has the same diameter as that of the rod a which is reduced to d between the bead and the collar.
The bearing face or surface of the valve is obtained by placing a piece of synthetic rubber, while it is still plastic, between the collar b and the bead c. This substance is then placed in a mold in which it is subjected to a heat treatment similar to that producing the vulcanization of Indian rubber, as in. obtain the desired hardness. After vulcanization is complete, the synthetic rubber part is taken out of the mold with its seat having the shape seen at e, with a cylindrical part f of the same diameter as the collar b.
The surface of the metal, as well as that of the synthetic rubber, are polished until they reach the desired dimensions. In other words, the manufacturing process consists in inserting the synthetic rubber in the plastic state between the retaining means, in heat treating it in a mold, and in polishing all the metal and the rubber to, obtain the desired dimensions.
The complete element of the valve, metal body and synthetic rubber part, then comprises the frustoconical surface e and the cylindrical base portion f, which are arranged between the collar and the metal bead b and c, so as to that there is coincidence in diameter for each of the edges, upper and lower, of the. rubber part with metal body. Between the collar and the bead, the surface of the metal rod may form a groove, as can be seen at y, so that there will be a cushion of rubber of sufficient size for it to apply. completely on the metal seat with which the valve element prepared as just described is to cooperate.
In the modified embodiment that. we see in the fia. 3, the metal retention collar b is provided with a cylindrical extension la which forms a groove in which the plastic rubber is initially compressed, the extension la serving; retention wall after i treatment ,. hot, thus providing an additional fixing mode for the element e, f of the seat of the valve, thus preventing it from moving during operation.
Any cementation material can be used to ensure the adhesion of the synthetic rubber to the metal of the valve body, this body being able to be provided with notches, curvilinear profile parts, recesses or (the grooves capable of blocking the valve body). rubber.
Synthetic rubber moldings can be made separately and fixed in position on the body of the valve, so as to constitute a block, the body of the. his pope can. moreover be made of several parts assembled by threading or otherwise, but the final treatment by polishing wise until the parts reach the desired dimensions being carried out after assembly of the block, which ensures the accuracy.
The mushroom valve elements constructed in accordance with what has been described above make it unnecessary to polish the valves during assembly. These valves are much less sensitive to dust and to. solid particles and when used at low temperatures, rubber faces are much less likely to freeze in their seats than those made of metal.
